Exeter,England,April20.-TheabandonmentoftheirFaithbynearlyhalfthiscountry'sCatholicpopulationisprimarilydueto weakness,lackofunderstandingofthe Faith,andthe"herdinstinct"inreverse,accordingtotheorganiserofthenation's month-longconversiondrive.

FatherFrancisRipley,superioroftheCatholic MissionarySociety,spokeataconferencesponsored herebytheCatholicWomen'sLeagueaspartofthe month'scampaignbeingconductedthroughoutthe countrybytheBishops,clergyandlaysocieties.Some 200womencameherefromwesternEnglandtoparticipate.

FatherRipley,headofagroupoftravellingpriests whosesolepurposeistoconvertthenationtoCatholicism,saidthattheCatholicteachingonbirthcontrolisoneofthemostmisunderstoodoftheChurch's doctrines.ThekeytothewholematterofreconvertingBritainisthehome,hesaid.

Thepriestassertedthattheproblemof"leakage" hasbeenexaggeratedintheCatholicpress.Actually, hesaid,greatnumbersofCatcholicchildrendonot giveuptheirFaithiftheyhavebeentoCatholic schoolsandtheirparentsarepractisingCatholics.

CatholicswhodogiveuptheirFaithdosoprincipallythroughweaknessandbecausetheydonot understandit,hesaid.

Asforthe"herdinstinct,"FatherRipleycalledit aheart-breakingexperiencetovisitnewhousing estateswherefamilieswhohadbeenmovedfromtheir cldhomeshadstoppedgoingtochurch.

HesaidCatholicsinovercrowdedareasofbigcities instinctivelygotoMasstogether,butwhensuch gioupsarebrokenup,church-goingoftensuffers.

Inthesameway,hesaid,Irishworkmenonfirst comingtoEnglandliveinlittlecommunitieswith otherIrishCatholics,butstopgoingtoMasslater whentheybecomeisolated.

FatherRipleywentontoexplain"OperationInformation,"thesuccessfulAmericancampaigninthe "CrusadeforSouls"movement,ahouse-to-housecanvassforhelpingindifferentandlapsedCatholicsand offeringtheFaithtonon-Catholics.

Meanwhile,inanarticleinthe"Universe,"national Catholicnewspaper,publishedinLondon,inconnectionwithhiscampaign,FatherRipleygavethis practicaladviceforreclaimingthelapsedandpre- ventingothersfromjoiningtheirranks:

*Forpriests:regularsystematicday-to-dayvisiting ofparishionersintheirhomes,thesettingupin theirparishesoftheCrusadeforSouls,encouragementofapostolicorganisationsofthelaity.

*Forparents:membershipandactiveparticipation inaCatholicorganisation,co-operationwiththe clergyintheCrusadeforSouls,familyprayerand receptionofthesacraments,goodexampleand encouragingthechildrentobeactiveCatholics.

TheCatholicEvidenceGuild,composedoflaityand clergywhopreachinmarketplacesandatstreetcorners,isco-operatingintensivelyinthemonth'sdrive.

InLondon,atanewlunch-time"pitch"foroffice workersontheThamesEmbankmentneartheHouses ofParliament,theyweresosuccessfultheyraninto troublewiththepolice.

Theycouldbepart-timeclerics,itsuggested,helpingthepriesttoconcentratehisentireenergieson beingapriest.

NoneofthechildrenwereworkingexceptKevin, whowasaprinters'apprentice.Hewouldgetvery goodpayonedaywhenhehadlearnthistrade. Meantimehegavehismotherallhisearningsexcept 5/aweek,whichhewassavinguptobuyabike. lieandhisfatherhadgoneofftoSt.Thomas'schurch, wheresomeofthemenoftheparishwereallworking tryingtogetafenceuproundthechurch.

TheO'Reillyswereafineloyal.Catholicfamily. WhateverFr.Martinaskedfor,theytriedtodo.They wereallinthedifferentparishsodalities,Mr.O'Reilly andKevinintheHolyNameSociety,Mrs.O'Reilly intheSacredHeartSodality;MarywasaChildof MaryandJudyanAspirant.KevinandJimwere altarboysandKevinwasalsogoingtojointheYoung ChristianWorkerswhentheywereorganised.

Thetwinsalwayshelpedwithsellingticketsfor raffles.Theyusedtowalkroundfromhousetohouse, knockingatthedoors,andtheyhadsuchpleasant smilingfacesthatfewoftheneighbourseverrefused tobuyfromthem,thoughnoneofthepeoplewho livedinMariluphadmuchmoney.

Eithertheyweremigrantfamilies,withlotsof children,orelsetheywereevictees,peoplewhohad gotintodifficultiesandforwhomtheStateHousing CommissionfoundanewhomeinMarilup.

TheO'Reillysthemselveswerenotluckyaboutwinningraffles,theirnumberjustdidn'tseemtocome up.Butthisdidn'tstopthemfromdoingtheirvery besttosellasmanyaspossibleforwhateverraffle wasgoing,whetheritwasfortheschool,St.Theresa's orforthedebtonthechurch,orforsomeoutside charityliketheClontarfBoys'Home.

NextdaywasSundayandthetwinswantedtobeup speciallyearlybecauseitwasMissionsSunday,and theyusuallyhadthejobofputtingallthelittleenvelopesontheseatstohelpFatherMcKeonwhocame topreachespeciallyandmakeanappealforthePropagationoftheFaith.

Mrs.O'Reillyhadbeencarefullysaving2/aweek inpreparationforthisappeal.Itreallywasasacrifice onherpartbecausethereweresomanythingsher familyneeded.Especiallshoes.Theygotquitealot ofhelpfromtheSt.VincentdePaulSociety,who broughtthemclothesofallshapesandsizes,butwho wereshortofshoes.Andtheyweresoterriblyexpensiveintheshops.

Whentheyreachedthechurchthetwinsfound

themselvestheonlyonesthere.Jimbroughtthepiles ofMissions'envelopesfromthesacristryandthey startedtolaythemcarefullyoutalongthepews. Suddenlytheyheardasortofnastylaughandlooking upwhoshouldtheyseebutMichaelSmith.

ItwasnotlikehimtobeatthefirstMass,and sometimeshemissedcomingtoMassaltogether,but anywayherehewas,pushingtheenvelopeswhichhad beensocarefullyplacedalongwithhishand,witha sortofgloatingsarcasticlookonhisface.

Everythingwouldberuinedandtherewasnotso verymuchtimetospare.Itwouldbewrongtostart afightwithMichaelinsidethechurch.Whatwere thetwinstodo?

Milan,Italy.-LorianaNunziatiBellandi, oneofthepairwhosuedtheBishopofPrato forpubliclychargingthemwith"publicconcubinage,"wasquotedhereassayingshe wasdriventotakepartinthelawsuitby "interestedinterference."

Thelawsuit,broughtbyMrs.Bellandiandherhusband,Mauro,whomshemarriedinacivilceremonyin August,1956,resultedintheconvictionofBishop PietroFiordelliofPratofor"defamation"byaFlorencecourtayearago.

TheFlorenceCourtofAppealsreversedtheconvictionlastOctober,however,rulingthatwhatthe BishopsaidoftheBellandisdidnotconstitutea crime.

TheBellandicouplehasbeenseparatedsincethis pastEaster.

"IICorrieredellaSera,"Milandaily,reportingan interviewwithMrs.Bellandi,quotesherassaying:

"Haditdependedonme,theBishopwouldnothave beeninvolvedinalawsuit.Andmyhusbandwould probablynothavetakensuchastepeitherhadthere notbeencertaininterestedinterference."

Mrs.Bellandididnotexplainthenatureofthe "interestedinterference."ButBishopFiordellihimselfhasdeclaredthattheCommunistpartyprodded thecoupletotakethematterintoopencourt.

Mrs.Bellandiisreportednowtobeseekingalegal separationfromMauroBellandi.Thehusbandbecame avictimofparalysisshortlyaftertheopeningofthe Bishop'strialinJanuary,1958.andwasofferedfree treatmentintheSovietUnion.
