PatrolsoftheNationalGuardhavehadencounters withtherebels.TheGovernmenthasannouncedthat fourrebelshavebeenkilledandthreecaptured.The numberofrebelsisnowestimatedat10.

FatherRipley,headofagroupoftravellingpriests whosesolepurposeistoconvertthenationtoCatholicism,saidthattheCatholicteachingonbirthcontrolisoneofthemostmisunderstoodoftheChurch's doctrines.ThekeytothewholematterofreconvertingBritainisthehome,hesaid.

Eithertheyweremigrantfamilies,withlotsof children,orelsetheywereevictees,peoplewhohad gotintodifficultiesandforwhomtheStateHousing CommissionfoundanewhomeinMarilup.

TheO'Reillysthemselveswerenotluckyaboutwinningraffles,theirnumberjustdidn'tseemtocome up.Butthisdidn'tstopthemfromdoingtheirvery besttosellasmanyaspossibleforwhateverraffle wasgoing,whetheritwasfortheschool,St.Theresa's orforthedebtonthechurch,orforsomeoutside charityliketheClontarfBoys'Home.

NextdaywasSundayandthetwinswantedtobeup speciallyearlybecauseitwasMissionsSunday,and theyusuallyhadthejobofputtingallthelittleenvelopesontheseatstohelpFatherMcKeonwhocame topreachespeciallyandmakeanappealforthePropagationoftheFaith.

Mrs.O'Reillyhadbeencarefullysaving2/aweek inpreparationforthisappeal.Itreallywasasacrifice onherpartbecausethereweresomanythingsher familyneeded.Especiallshoes.Theygotquitealot ofhelpfromtheSt.VincentdePaulSociety,who broughtthemclothesofallshapesandsizes,butwho wereshortofshoes.Andtheyweresoterriblyexpensiveintheshops.

Whentheyreachedthechurchthetwinsfound

themselvestheonlyonesthere.Jimbroughtthepiles ofMissions'envelopesfromthesacristryandthey startedtolaythemcarefullyoutalongthepews. Suddenlytheyheardasortofnastylaughandlooking upwhoshouldtheyseebutMichaelSmith.

ItwasnotlikehimtobeatthefirstMass,and sometimeshemissedcomingtoMassaltogether,but anywayherehewas,pushingtheenvelopeswhichhad beensocarefullyplacedalongwithhishand,witha sortofgloatingsarcasticlookonhisface.
