Thedesign,hesaid,was unusualandacompletedeparturefromthetraditional typeofchurch,butitwas effective,dignifiedanddevotional.
Andwhatwasmostim-
portantinthesedays,when itwassodifficulttoget financialaccommodation,it waseconomical. Thatafirst-classbrick andtilebuildingtoaccommodate420(apartfromtwo galleries)couldbeacquired forthemodestamountof £15,500wasanextraordinaryachievement,andreflectedcreditonallwho wereassociatedwithit.
HecongratulatedFather Linnaneonhisquiet,dignified,andefficientleadership.FatherLinnanewas apractical,thoughtfuland considerateman.Heknew thevalueofapound, especiallywhenthatpound camefromthepursesofhis people,who,forthemost part,werestillpayingoff theirhomes,andpayingfor theeducationoftheirchildreninCatholicschools.

ManypeopleinthisStaterecentlywitnessedan eclipseofthesun.Simplystated,themoontravelled betweentheearthandthesunsothatforatimethe radianceandheatfromthesunwasabated.There itsanobviousparallelforusasCatholicsintherela!tionbetweenMarytheMotherofGodandHerDivine Son.GodtheFathercreatedlight,notfromnothing, butfromHispowertocreate.Fromthelightofthe suncomesalltheearth'sfoodsupply,allourwarmth, alloursightatthetimeduringthe24hourswhen thesunshinesupontheparticularsurfaceofthe worldonwhichanyonelives.However,Godalso createdthemoon.Thepurposeofthislesserheavenly bodyistogivelightduringthetimewhentheearth hasmovedinitscourseroundthesun.Duringour timesofrest,whichwecallnight,themoonshedsits light.Anotherfunctionofthemoonistocontrol thewatersofthevastoceansoftheworld.
Weneedbothsunandmoon.Wecannotexistin theplanetarysystemwithoutthem.WeneedJesus Christ,theSecondPersonoftheBlessedTrinity.He isthesourceofournourishment,onHisbodyand bloodwefeed.Heisourwarmthofcharity,because throughHimwebecomemembersoftheMystical BodyofwhichHeistheHead.Butwealsoneed MarytheMotherofGod,afarlesserlight,being onlyacreatedbeing.YetbyherFiatattheAnnunciationshebecamethesourcethroughwhichJesus becamemananddweltontheearth.Theanalogy isimperfect.Poeticlicenceisallowedtoaddtologic butitstillhasspiritualvalueforus.Weknowthat OurLady,whoistheMediatrixofallGraces,draws, asthemoonthetides,allmankindtoherdivineSon. "ThisyearitisthenewHolyFatherwhocelebrates Easterwithyou,"PopeJohnsaid.Hethenspokeof theconstantlyrenewing,neverdyinglifeofthe Churchanditsvisiblehead,thePope,declaringthat "theChurchisalive,asitsDivineFounderisalive."
"ItwillbereadilyunderstoodandforgivenUsif Ourheartisunabletorestrainathrobofparticularly warmtendernessforthesonsofastrongandgood peoplewhomWemetinthecourseofOurjourneys. OnceuponatimetherelivedinMarilup,nearPerth inWesternAustralia,afamilycalledtheO'Reillys. Thisisthestoryofthemall,howtheystruggledand howharduptheywere,andhowtheyprayedtoo.
Theheroandheroineofthistalearethetwins, JudyandJim.JudywascalledafterSt.Jude,whois thepatronsaintofhopelesscasesandlostcauses. Hewasoneoftheapostles.JimwascalledafterSt. JamestheGreater,martyrandapostle.
Therearefourbrothersandsistersolderthanthe twins.PatricktheeldestbrotherisaSt.Columban missionaryinthePhilippineIslands.Bridget,the eldestdaughter,ismarriedandlivesdownonafarm inthesouth-westofWesternAustralia.Kevinthe nextboyisaprinters'apprentice.
ThencomesMary,whogoestoSt.Snobs.Thisis notthenameoftheschool,butinMariluptheycall itthatbecausetheuniformisterriblyexpensive.In MariluptheyhavetheSistersofMercyupto5th grade,afterthattheboyshadtogobybustothe ChristianBrothers,andthegirlsbybustoSt.Snobs. UnlesstheywenttotheStateschool.
"GlorybetoGod,"Mr.O'Reillyusedtosay:"I'd ratherwealllivedondriedbreadthanthatanyof mychildrenshouldgototheStateschool."Thenhe wouldrollacigarette.Hewasabuilder'slabourer andwithsomanykidshecouldnotaffordtosmoke often.
Afterthetwinstherewerethreechildren,Joseph whowasfiveandwasalittlescamp,Eileenwhowas 21andthebabyJohn.
TheparishchurchinMarilupwasanissenhut.It hadbeenconsecratedbyHisGrace,theArchbishoponlyoneyear.Thepatronsaintofthechurch wasSt.Thomas.Mrs.O'Reilly'sneighbournextdoor, whowasaCommo,usedtoteaseheraboutSt.Thomas. MissRoseFlanaganwasaverygoodneighbourto theO'Reillys.TheyalllivedinStateHousingCommissionhomeinMarilup.Halfofthemweremigrants fromalloverEurope,andtheotherhalfwereevictees. "Theblow-insandthechuck-outs"werewhatunkind peoplecalledthem.
However,theO'Reillysdidn'tcare,thereweretoo manyofthemandtoomuchtodoforthemtoworry oversillylittlethings.Theyknewthattheywereall safe,becausetheysaidtheFamilyRosary.Ohandthe trimmings!WhatwithMrs.O'Reillybeinganauxiliary tc,theLegionofMary,theythoughttheywouldnever getofftheirknees.
NowthisstorybeginsjustafterEaster,1959.The twinsandJoseph(whowasalwayscalledJoe)were goingtoschool.Theirschoolwasjustnearthechurch, onlyamileandahalfaway.Butsomehowthey wereoftennearlylate.
