ThechapelofSt.ThomasMoreCollege wascrowdedwithUniversitygraduatesand undergraduatesonSunday,April5,when UniversitySundaywasobserved.Academic robesofmanydifferentfacultiesandUniversitieswereworn.

TheprocessionformedupisChrist,"saidSt.Paul. inthegroundsofthemain buildingandmarchedalong thecoveredwaytothe chapelentrance.Thegraduatesledtheprcession, followedbytheundergra- duatesandcollegestudents. videsAlthoughthechapelproseatingfor200,many morethanthisnumber werepresent.Membersof theUniversitystaffattended.

AMissaCantatawas celebratedbytheV.Rev. C.P.Finn,S.J.,rectorof thecollege.Thesingingwas ledbytheNewmansociety choir,conductedbyMr.A. Haydock.

Copiesofthemusicwere provided,sothatallwere abletojoininthesinging. Thesermonwaspreached bytheRev.J.Chauncy, himselfagraduateofthe UniversityofW.A.

Warsaw,March23.-Polishcommunists havecalledontheChurchinPolandtostop whattheycallits"hopelessbattle"against communism.

Thedemandwasmadein aresolutionpassedbythe congressofthePolishUnitedWorkers'(Communist) partyhere.Theresolution said:

"Thepartyandthe governmentdonotwant warwiththeChurch.The Churchmust,however, confineitselftomattesof faithandrenouncethe hopelessattemptsatfighting socialism."

Theparty'sresolution followedtheaddresstothe congressbyPoland'scommunistchieftain,Wladyslaw Gomulka,whodeclared:

"WewarntheChurch Hierarchynottoviolatethe lawsandstatedecrees, somethingwhichisagain takingplace.Weadviseit tostopprovokingthe people'sauthority,because thiswillnotbetotheadvantageoftheChurch.

"Werepeatonceagain thatwedonotwantwar withtheChurch.Butthe Churchmustbeonlythe Church,mustrestrictitself tomattersoffaith One mustadjusttoprogressand renouncethe hopeless thoughtofcombattingsocialism."

Inanotheraddresstothe congress,PolishPremier JosefCyrankiewiczsaidit isimpassiblenottospeak of"thepoliticalandantisocialistactivityofthe clergy,especiallyonthe higherlevels."Hecontinued:

'Whatisthereasonfor thefactthatpartofthe ChurchHierarchycannot getusedtothenecessityof confiningitselftomatters ofreligionand,incompliancewiththeseparationof ChurchandState,ofrenouncingthefightagainst socialism.

Bogota,Colombia,March21.-TheLatin AmericanBishops'Council(CELAM)has orderedthataConfraternityofChristian Doctrineunitbeestablishedineveryone ofthe17,000parishesontheSouthAmericancontinent.

TheestablishmentofaC.C.D.unitineachparishis partofanall-outfightonreligiousignorancedecided onatCELAM'sthirdannualmeetingheldinRome lastNovember.Announcementofthedirectivewas madeatCELAM'sheadquartershere.

Theresolutionbecomeseffectiveimmediatelyfor eachparishinthe400ecclesiasticaljurisdictions includedinCELAM.

AstheCommunistsarebentondiscreditingoppositionforces,andseetheCatholicChurchasthe mainopposition,theyareouttounderminethereputationoftheChurchandweakenherinfluence,he continued.Thus,bymeansofmaliciouspropaganda, theyseizeaswhippingboytheChurch,thebishops andtheCatholicpriesthood.

TheBishopsaidthegoaloftheReds'campaignis todriveawedgebetweentheclergyandlaity,andat thesametimetoalienateCatholicsfromothercommunitiesinIndia.

HesaidthatcommunistsinIndiaarecloselyfollowingthemethodsthattheircounterpartsusedin Chinaandatthesametimemadewidespreaduseof propagandamaterialproducedbytheSovietUnion.

"Thewidespreaddisseminationofthisliterature, togetherwiththeskillfuluseofnewspaperswith CommunistleaningsbringstheCommunistideasand activitiestothemasses,thuscreatinganatmosphere favourabletoCommunistinfiltration."theBishop declared.

BishopBouteralsodisclosedthattwodiocesesin NorthIndiahavereportedthattherearedetermined Communistactivitiestowinovertheuniversitystudents.

ConcerningdefectionsfromtheChurch,theprelate saidthatinthewholeStateofKerala,nowunder Communistrule,therearenotmanyparishesthat havenotseensomedefections.Theprocessisstill continuing,hesaid.

TheArchbishopdeclaredthatKeralahasbecome thebeehiveofCommunisminIndia-thespringboard fromwhichCommunistshopetojumpintopowerin theotherStates.

Rome,March20.-Apart-timedetective inlovewithhiswork,RedemptoristFather EdwardA.WuenschelisapassionatedefenderofthegenuinenessoftheHolyShroud preservedatthecathedralinTurin,Italy.

Theshroud,aclothabout13feetlongandfourand ahalffeetwide,isbelievedbymanytobethecloth inwhichChristwaswrappedwhenHisbodywas laidinthetombontheeveningofGoodFriday.

Theclothbearstheimprintsofthebodyofaman whowascrucified,crownedwiththorns,whohadhis sidepiercedandwhohadbeenbrutallyscourged. ForFatherWuenschel,whohasdevoted25yearsof oft-and-onstudytotheshroud,thereisnotthe slightestdoubtthatthemanintheshroudwasChrist.

Buttoothers,thematterisstilldebatable.Forthe personwholooksupthearticleontheshrowdcontainedintheCatholicEncyclopaedia,doubtofits authenticityisquitenormal.Thearticle,writtenby FatherHerbertThurston,takesadimviewofthe relicandfavourstheideathatitwasapaintingmade inthe14thcentury.

"Butthatarticlewaswritten47yearsago,"Father Wuenschelsays,"anditisbasedonviewsformulated 50yearsago.Andthat'sallthescholarshipofthose whodon'tbelieveintheauthenticityoftheshroud stops.

FatherWuenschelhaswrittenoftenandspiritedly indefenceoftheshroudatTurin.Therelicisenclosed inanornatesilvercasketandiswrappedinsilk. I!isthepropertyoftheHouseofSavoy,theformer rulinghouseofItaly,andisdisplayedonlyatrare intervals.

Thelasttimeitwasdisplayedwasin1933when extensiveandscientificphotographsweremadeofit. Itwasfirstphotographedin1898.Atthattimeit waslearnedforthefirsttimethatthestainsonthe clothwereanegativepictureofthepersonencased init.Thiswaslearnedwhenthephotographer Jokedathisnegativeandfoundapositiveimagewith clearandeasilyrecognisablefeatureseventothe forkedbeard.

Criticsoftheshroudmaintainedatthetimethat thenegativeimagewasaccountedforbythefactthat whoevermadeitstainedonlythosepartswhichwould havebeentouchedbyabody.

However,whentheshroudwasphotographed forthesecondtimein1931,andagainin1933,much betterandmoredetailedpictureswereobtained.The intricatedelicatedetailsseemtodestroymuchofthe groundsupportingtheideathattheformonthecloth waspaintedon,FatherWuenschelmaintains Inhisbook,"Self-PortraitofChrist,"thepriest describeshowthemarkingsontheshroudshowthat thepersoninithadsustainedabrutalscourging. This,accordingtoresearch,wasthenormalmethod inuseatthetimeofChrist'sdeath,afactthatwas notknowntoscholarsofthe14thcentury.hestates.

Thepriestsaysthatresearchandinvestigationin favouroftheshroud'sauthenticityreceivesmuch supportfromtheUnitedStates.Heisamoving spiritamongtheflourishingCultoresSantoSindonis (VeneratorsoftheHolyShroud)whomakeserious scientificstudiesofthefieldnowknownassindonoIngy,thesutdyoftheshroud.

Oneofthemainstumblingblocksforcriticsofthe shroudisthatitappearsinEuropeanhistoryforthe firsttimeinthe14thcentury,FatherWuenschel notes.Thereisnocollectionofhistoricaldocuments thatcantraceitsoriginsbacktothetimeofChrist.

Ontheotherhandthereisadocumentof1390which claimsthattheshroudisaforgeryandthatitsforger hadconfessedtotheforgery,theRedemptoristadds.

Butsupportersoftheshroudclaimitiscertain thatitcamefromConstantinoplewheretherewasa shroudveneratedasthatofOurLordatleastasfar backas1171,hegoeson.

Anotherfieldofinvestigationbeingpursuedby supportersoftheshroudisinthefieldofByzantine Art.ByexpandingthecountlessByzantinerepre- sentationsoftheCrucifixionandthesufferingChrist, itishopedtoshowthatcertaindetails,particularly oftheface,recuragainandagainandmatchthe detailsofthefaceofthemanintheshroud.

Thiswouldappeartoprove,circumstantiallyat least,thattheartistsofancientConstantinopledrew theirinspirationfortheirpicturesofChrist,notfrom imagination,butfromtheactualfaceontheshroud nowkeptatTurin.

InrecentyearsFatherWuenschelhashadlittle timetodevotetohisabsorbingpassion.Hecameto Romein1949tobecomethedirectoroftheRedemp- toristCollegeofInternationalStudies.Atpresenthe isonaleaveofabsencefromthatposttothatpart intherevisionoftheRedemptoristRuleandtoserve onthecongregation'scommitteeoneducation.

However,itisFatherWuenschel'sambitionand thatofbothcriticsandsupportersoftheshroud's authenticitythatitbesubjectedtothemostmodern meansofscientifictests.Therehavebeencallsfor chemicalanalysisofthebloodontheshroud,for spectroscopeanalysiswhichcouldrevealthepresence ofminutetissuesorcells.Themethodsofradioactive carbondatingcoulddetermineapproximatelyifthe shrouddatesfromthebeginningoftheChristianera. X-raycouldalsoproveiftheshroudwerepaintedor not.

Toeachofthesetechniquesobjectionshavebeen raised,principallybasedonfearsthattheywould destroytheshroudintheprocess.TheHouseof Savoyhadrefusedpermissionforthetests,although the1950internationalcongressofSindonologyin Romepassedresolutionsfavouringfurthertests.

Whilewaitingforthecarnivaltobegin,ourswimmingteachergaveaspeech totheparents,andthegirls. Theairwasvibrating withanxiety,andthree othergirlsandmyselfhad beenaskedtojudgethe races.

Thestartersforthefirst racehadbeencalledtothe startingpoint.Therewasa shortpause,whilewewaitedfortheracetostart. Then-splash,theywerein thewater.Afterafewtense minutes.thewinnertouchedthefinishingline,and onlyafewsecondsseparatedtheothergirlsforsecond, thirdandfourthplaces.

Thewholeafternoonwas packedwiththrillsandexcitementofthiskind.

Ithinkthefourofus (whowerejudging),had moreexcitementthananybodyelse.becausewehad toselectthewinners.

Thedivingcompetition,I thought,wasthemostattractiveevent.Therewere: ordinarydives,fancyones andalsoafewcomplete failures,buttheywereall intheday'sefforts.

Onegirlintheseniorrelay cutthreeofhertoesonthe rope,andsotherewas bloodeverywhere,butthat addedtotheexcitement.

Mr.Chenardillustrated hispointbynotingthatin Greeceoverthree-fifthsof thechildrenattendingprimaryschoolsreceiveaid throughtheCRS-NCWC schoolfeedingprogramme, whileinSpainmorethan twomillionschoolchildren gettheequivalentofameal dailythroughsimilarprojects.

Turningtothesubjectof medicalaid,Mr.Chenard urgedtheUnitedNations' ChildrenFundtoencourage localgovernmentstoprovideassistancetomobile medicalunitsoperatedby CRS,particularlyintheFar East.

Butallbutafewinquisitive stareshavenowturnedinto smilesofrecognition.This isthankstotheSister'sengagingpersonalityandher abilitytoccnversein French,EnglishandGermanfluently,andnowHebbrewtosomeextent.

Amongherclassesare "TheIntroductiontothe HolyBibleanditsliterature"-itslecturerisa womanprofessor.Dr.NehamaLeibovitz-anda classin"TheBibleLands andtheirCultures,"in Biblicalperiods(2000-500 B.C.)."

NosooneerhadshearrivedattheEin-Karemconventthanshejoinedthe HebrewUlpan(Hebrew course)inthevillage, whereinadditiontoherself andtwootherReligious,the classwasmadeupentirelyofnewimmigrantsfrom EasternEurope.Onebyone theimmigrantsdriftedfrom thecourse,andonlythe threenunsremained.

ToExplainBible

Suchaclosingwouldcomeatatimewhenthe country's305Catholicschoolshavelongwaitinglists andpopularinterestinCatholiceducationisincreasing.

Tomeetthecrisis,theschoolsystemhasaskedthe Governmenttopaythesalariesofabout1,300lay teachers.However,therequesthasmetresistance fromtheSocialists-whoareopposedinprincipleto Catholiceducation-andevenfrommembersofthe Catholic-orientedPeople'sparty.

CtholicschoolofficialshopethatthePeople'sparty positionmaychangeaftertheMay10generalelections.
