Theshroud,aclothabout13feetlongandfourand ahalffeetwide,isbelievedbymanytobethecloth inwhichChristwaswrappedwhenHisbodywas laidinthetombontheeveningofGoodFriday.
Theclothbearstheimprintsofthebodyofaman whowascrucified,crownedwiththorns,whohadhis sidepiercedandwhohadbeenbrutallyscourged. ForFatherWuenschel,whohasdevoted25yearsof oft-and-onstudytotheshroud,thereisnotthe slightestdoubtthatthemanintheshroudwasChrist.
Buttoothers,thematterisstilldebatable.Forthe personwholooksupthearticleontheshrowdcontainedintheCatholicEncyclopaedia,doubtofits authenticityisquitenormal.Thearticle,writtenby FatherHerbertThurston,takesadimviewofthe relicandfavourstheideathatitwasapaintingmade inthe14thcentury.
"Butthatarticlewaswritten47yearsago,"Father Wuenschelsays,"anditisbasedonviewsformulated 50yearsago.Andthat'sallthescholarshipofthose whodon'tbelieveintheauthenticityoftheshroud stops.
FatherWuenschelhaswrittenoftenandspiritedly indefenceoftheshroudatTurin.Therelicisenclosed inanornatesilvercasketandiswrappedinsilk. I!isthepropertyoftheHouseofSavoy,theformer rulinghouseofItaly,andisdisplayedonlyatrare intervals.
Thelasttimeitwasdisplayedwasin1933when extensiveandscientificphotographsweremadeofit. Itwasfirstphotographedin1898.Atthattimeit waslearnedforthefirsttimethatthestainsonthe clothwereanegativepictureofthepersonencased init.Thiswaslearnedwhenthephotographer Jokedathisnegativeandfoundapositiveimagewith clearandeasilyrecognisablefeatureseventothe forkedbeard.
Criticsoftheshroudmaintainedatthetimethat thenegativeimagewasaccountedforbythefactthat whoevermadeitstainedonlythosepartswhichwould havebeentouchedbyabody.

Oneofthemainstumblingblocksforcriticsofthe shroudisthatitappearsinEuropeanhistoryforthe firsttimeinthe14thcentury,FatherWuenschel notes.Thereisnocollectionofhistoricaldocuments thatcantraceitsoriginsbacktothetimeofChrist.
Ontheotherhandthereisadocumentof1390which claimsthattheshroudisaforgeryandthatitsforger hadconfessedtotheforgery,theRedemptoristadds.
Butsupportersoftheshroudclaimitiscertain thatitcamefromConstantinoplewheretherewasa shroudveneratedasthatofOurLordatleastasfar backas1171,hegoeson.
Anotherfieldofinvestigationbeingpursuedby supportersoftheshroudisinthefieldofByzantine Art.ByexpandingthecountlessByzantinerepre- sentationsoftheCrucifixionandthesufferingChrist, itishopedtoshowthatcertaindetails,particularly oftheface,recuragainandagainandmatchthe detailsofthefaceofthemanintheshroud.
Thiswouldappeartoprove,circumstantiallyat least,thattheartistsofancientConstantinopledrew theirinspirationfortheirpicturesofChrist,notfrom imagination,butfromtheactualfaceontheshroud nowkeptatTurin.
InrecentyearsFatherWuenschelhashadlittle timetodevotetohisabsorbingpassion.Hecameto Romein1949tobecomethedirectoroftheRedemp- toristCollegeofInternationalStudies.Atpresenthe isonaleaveofabsencefromthatposttothatpart intherevisionoftheRedemptoristRuleandtoserve onthecongregation'scommitteeoneducation.
However,itisFatherWuenschel'sambitionand thatofbothcriticsandsupportersoftheshroud's authenticitythatitbesubjectedtothemostmodern meansofscientifictests.Therehavebeencallsfor chemicalanalysisofthebloodontheshroud,for spectroscopeanalysiswhichcouldrevealthepresence ofminutetissuesorcells.Themethodsofradioactive carbondatingcoulddetermineapproximatelyifthe shrouddatesfromthebeginningoftheChristianera. X-raycouldalsoproveiftheshroudwerepaintedor not.
Toeachofthesetechniquesobjectionshavebeen raised,principallybasedonfearsthattheywould destroytheshroudintheprocess.TheHouseof Savoyhadrefusedpermissionforthetests,although the1950internationalcongressofSindonologyin Romepassedresolutionsfavouringfurthertests.

NosooneerhadshearrivedattheEin-Karemconventthanshejoinedthe HebrewUlpan(Hebrew course)inthevillage, whereinadditiontoherself andtwootherReligious,the classwasmadeupentirelyofnewimmigrantsfrom EasternEurope.Onebyone theimmigrantsdriftedfrom thecourse,andonlythe threenunsremained.

Suchaclosingwouldcomeatatimewhenthe country's305Catholicschoolshavelongwaitinglists andpopularinterestinCatholiceducationisincreasing.
Tomeetthecrisis,theschoolsystemhasaskedthe Governmenttopaythesalariesofabout1,300lay teachers.However,therequesthasmetresistance fromtheSocialists-whoareopposedinprincipleto Catholiceducation-andevenfrommembersofthe Catholic-orientedPeople'sparty.
CtholicschoolofficialshopethatthePeople'sparty positionmaychangeaftertheMay10generalelections.
