DomBenedict,O.S.B. (CharlesThomasMudd) hailsfromBrisbaneand waseducatedattheDownlandsCollegeoftheSacred HeartFathers,Toowoomba, Queensland.

Hebeganhiscareerwith theP.M.G.Departmentand thenjoinedtheRoyalAustralianNavyin1950.

OnSaturday,March7,theLordAbbotreceivedthesimplevows ofthreenovicesattheterminationoftheirnovitiateyear. Theceremonytookplace attheConventualMass.His Lordshipspokebrieflycongratulatingthemandencouragingthemtopersevere intheirnewlifeasprofessedBenedictines.

Afterreadingtheformula oftheirprofessionandsingingthebeautiful"Suscipe meDomine"(Upholdme0 Lord)thenewlyprofessed weregiventhemonastic embracebytheLordAbbot andalltheprofessedmonks. TheythensealedtheirOblationbythereceptionof Holy.Communion. Thethreemonkshave widelydifferingbackgroundsandrepresentthree StatesofAustralia.

Dom BernardO.S.B. (RobertDavidRooney)is thesecondyoungestofa familyofsixchildren.He comesfromSydney.

Hecompletedhisearly educationattheSistersof MercyConventatEarlwood, andafterwards,likehisfour brothers,wassenttothe ChristianBrothers'High School,Lewisham,wherehe spenttheremainingyears ofhisschoollife.

Hewasaprefectofhis schoolandwasaCadet PilotOfficerintheschool cadetcorps.WithMatriculationcompletedheworked successivelyforaSydney brewery,theStatePublic Service,andfinallyforthe RegistrarGeneral'sDepartment. Hebeganstudyforadegreesoflawandwasnearingtheendofhiscourse whenhedecidedtojointhe Benedictines.Whilstat SydneyUniversityhedistinguishedhimselfinRoman Lawandwasaprominent debaterwinningtheN.S.W. seniordebatingtrophy,the FlanaganShield.

Havingcompletedhisnovitiate,hebeginshisphilosophicalstudies.

DomColumbawaseducatedbytheChristianBrothersandwasthefirst iuniorpupiltobeenrolled attheircollegeofSt.Kevin, Toorak.Attheearlyage of15hepassedhisLeaving Certificatewithdistinction andthefollowingyearhe succeededingainingthe M:AriculationCertificateof MelbourneUniversity.Too youngtoentertheUniver-

sity,hestudiedengineeringattheMelbourneTechnical College.Onenteringthe universityhebeganacourse incivilengineeringand thenpassedontothe ScienceFaculty.Hiswork inthatfacultybroughthim anHonoursdegreein Science.Inthecourseofobtaininghisdegreehedistinguishedhimselfbygaininganumberofplaces. Leavingtheuniversity,he wasgivenapositionwith theC.S.I.R.O.intheDivisionofElectrotechnologyin SydneyUniversity.His workwascrownedbya

Recently60membersandfriendsofthe combinedY.C.W.-N.C.G.M.AthleticClub attendedawind-upeveningtothe1958/59 trackseasonatwhichtrophiesandawards werepresentedto11members.

TheyweretoJohnGood-Thebesteffortbythe man"A"gradepoints champion;TrevorWilson "B"grade;GerryLambe, "C"grade;PeterSchmidt, "D"grade;RichieMcCabe "F"grade;RogerKielysubjuniorgrade;JimSteffan, juvenilegrade.

SpecialawardswerepresentedtoFrankGobbart whoreceivedtheHerbElliottaward1958/59forthe bestmiddledistanceathlete andMichaelGoerkereceivedtheN.Ennistrophyfor themostimprovedathlete.

MarieAlmondwonthe seniorchampionshipofthe NC.G.M.andTheaMorgan wontheJuniorchampionship.

Thenamesofthetrophy winnersweremostsignificantaseachandeveryone ofthemgaveoutstanding servicetotheclubduring theseason.TheaMorgan being14yearsofageshowedpromisebyherversatility,andhereffortsinthe numerous880yardraces shecontestedraisedmany aneyebrow.

"lubwasputupbythe N.C.G.M."C"gradeteam whowerebeatenbytwo pointsforthatgradechampionship.Therecruitsfor thepastseasonprovedto bekeen,butunfortunately werenotenoughandifthe clubisevertobeapower inathletics,justasmany newmembersareneeded again.Thewinterseason commencesatAquinasCollegeonMay16andallintendingcross-countryrunnersmustcontactthecommitteewellbeforethatdate. AllenquiriescanbedirectedtoTerryBlackof63 Ewen-streetScarborough bymail,withareturnaddressplease. Apresentationwasmade totheclubpresident,Mr. GerryLambewhowill shortlybemarriedandthe assemblywasunanimousin itsapprovalofthegesture. ForonceGerrywaslostfor words.Theeveningconcludedwithabarbeaueand thanksaregivetoMr.and Mrs.Husseyfortheirkindnessandhospitality.

HisyearsintheR.A.N. tookhimtovariousparts oftheworldduringwhich heservedintheKoreanconflict.HesawmuchofJapan includingtheatom-bombed cityofHiroshima.Atourof dutyinEnglandtokhim alsototheContinent.In Rome,hewasamemberof thefirstall-Australian audiencegrantedbythelate lolyFather. DomBenedictwasaradio andradarmechanicandhas `)roughtwithhimtothe monasterymanyvaluable ;kills.Immediatelypriorto 'nteringthemonasteryDom Benedictwasstationedat Thnberra.

SUCCESS

Itmusthavebeenthat"littlebitofIrish ineverybody'sheart"thatbroughtanear capacityaudiencetoHisMajesty'sTheatre onSundayevening,March22,fortheIrish NationalConcert,anannualeventeagerly awaitedasSt.Patrick'sDaycomesround eachyear. HisGrace,ArchbishopPrendiville,HisLordship, BishopRaffertyandother membersoftheclergywere amongthosepresent.

Theprogramme,ahappy blendofCelticfunand Celticseriousness,moved alongeasilyandsmoothly andeveryitemwaswarmlyapplauded.Itwas,howevertheSt.Mary'sCathed- ralChoirthatreallystole theshow.Undertheskilful leadershipofRev.Fr.P. McCuddentheirrendering ofsacredandsecularpieces wassofinishedandpolishedthatonewonderswhythis Choirisnotheardmore ofteninpublic.Werethis possibletheculturallifeof Perthwouldbegreatlyen- riched.

Toopentheprogramme theSt.Joseph'sOrchestra, withMarjorieWyndham conducting,createdthe rightmoodbyplayinga numberoftraditionalIrish airsthatsetfeettapping andheartssinging. Thenfollowedalittle piece,depictingascene fromtheearlylifeofSt. Brigid,beautifullystaged andfaultlesslyspokenby PupilsfromtheBrigidine Convent,Wembley.John Allmark,thewell-known tenorsangIrishballads withgreatsympathyand feelingandPhylDavidson, soprano,wasneverinbetter voiceasshesang"Little TowninOldCountyDown" and"Serenade"bySchubert.

"EventideinanIrishGarden"waspresentedbySt. Joseph'sschool,Victoria Squareandwasanexqui- site mistress,settingfordancing MaureenScreagh toshowofflittlepupilsat workandatplay.

"TheyAllAcclaimSt. Patrick"wasanovelbut seriouslittleofferingfrom SacredHeartschool,Highgate. andTheideawasoriginal wellcarriedoutand somefinesingingbysome ofthepupilswasafeature.

TheNormaAtkinson SchoolofDancingwasresponsibleforthreenumbers inwhichNolaHall,WA. ChampionandElizabeth Walton,JuvenileChampion appeared.

"TheRhythmSninners" nrovidedmostofthefun andwereverygenerous withtheircontribution.

TheadultsectionofSt. Mary'sCathedralChoirsang threenieces:PanisAngelicas(Franck),"Mary'sBoy Child"(spiritual)and"The Rosary"(Nevin)arranged forvoicesandorchestrain sevenpartharmonybyRev. Fr.P.McCudden,andhe shouldfeel,alongwiththe Choir,richlyrewardedby thetumultuousapplause'hatfollowedtherendering. TheBoys'Choirwasnoless successfulwiththeiritems. Hereagainthearrangement wastheworkofRev.Fr. McCuddenandthepieces

chosenservedtoshowhow versatilethissplendidchoir is. andTheywererecalledagain againandtheirencores wereequallywellreceived. Theaudiencewaslothtolet themgobutallgoodthings mustcometoanendand so,withtheplayingofIreland'sNationalAnthema memorableprogrammewas broughttoaclose.Alast word:Wehavejustendeda mostsuccessfulFestivalof Perth.Wouldtherenotbe aplaceinthisculturaltreat forSt.Mary'sCathedral Choir?Nothingimported couldeclipseit,andanother thing,itisfashionedin W.A.

Thetwopartiestothep'acts,theHolySeeandItaly. wereledbytwodeterminedandpowerfulmen,Pope PiusXIandBenitoMussolini.Duringthenegotiations thepontiffandthedictatorwereconstantlyatodds. Historicaldocumentsrecentlymadeavailabletendto showthatitwasthePopewhowontheirstruggle.

Negotiationsranupagainsttwomainobstacles. OnewasFascism'sattempttocontrolthemoraltrainingofItalianyouth.

ThesecondwasMussolini'sefforttoseparatethe solutionoftheso-calledRomanQuestion-whichwas solvedwiththetreatyestablishingVaticanCity's sovereignty-fromtheproblemoftheconcordatto regulaterelationsbetweentheHolySeeandItaly.

ThediariesofMarquisFrancescoPacelli,chief mediatorbetweenthePopeanddictator,nowshow thatitwasPiusXII'sdoggeddeterminationwhich wonthedayfortheChurchinbothquestions.

ThediariesarebeingreleasedbytheVaticanLibraryforthefirsttimeasacommemorationofthe Lateranpact's30thanniversary.

AccordingtoMarquisPacelli,whowasthebrother ofthelatePopePiusXII,thefirstofficialsteptoward thedrawingupofthepactswastakenbyMussolini enAugust5,1926,almosttwoandahalfyearsbefore theywereactuallysigned.

Inprinciplebothsidesagreedthatitwasnecessary torestoresometemporalsovereigntytothePopeso thathewouldbeindependentoftheItalianState.

Itwasalsoagreedthatitwouldbenecessaryfor thePopetorenouncehisclaimstosovereigntyover thePapalStates,takenoverbyItalyin1870,ifthe ItalianStatethatcameintobeingatthattimewas tobetrulyunited.

ButthepointatwhichthePopebalked,according tothePacellidiaries,wasthetotalitarianclaimsof theFascistGovernmentwhichhadtakenoverthe ItalianGovernment.

Aligvipers,

Firstandforemostofthesewaslawwhichgavethe Statetheexclusiveright"totakeoverthewhole moralandspiritualeducationofyouth,withtheexceptionofreligiousinstructiontobe'givenbythe clergy."

Latein1926,CardinalGasparri,thenCardinalSecretaryofState,askedtheMarquisPacellitorequest thatMussolini"suspendtheapprovaloftheplanned statutes,containingdetailsnotacceptabletothe HolySee."

AllofDecemberwastakenupindiscussingthis point,withMarquisPacellideclaringatonepoint, "asfarashe(thePope)isconcerned,thesematters areevenmoreimportantthattheRomanQeustion." andineffectthenegotiationsbrokedown,despite Mussolini'sassurancethatthelaw"didnotaffectin :'nywaytheactivityofCatholicAction."

ThecommonstatementitselfisproofthatPius XI'sstubbornstandworedowneventhedictator.It read.

"Withtheactofexchangeoftheratificationsof theLateranPacts,thecontractingpartiesreaffirm theirwilltoobserveloyally,inwordandspirit,not onlythetreatyregardingtheirrevocableandreciprocalrecognitionofsovereigntyandthedefiniteeliminationoftheRomanQuestion,butalsotheconcordat whichhasasitshighobjectivetheregulationofthe positioninItalyofreligionandtheChurch."

PacelliwasawardedthetitleofMarquisasa rewardofhislonganddelicatework.Althoughhe didnotlivetoseeit,PiusXIalsoreceivedareward forhissternanduncompromisingstand.

WiththeFascistGovernmentsmashedbythe Allies,theLateranPactsbecameArticle7ofthe ItalianConstitutiononMarch26,1947.

SpecialVaticanCommissionfor Movies,RadioAndTelevision

VaticanCity,March10.-ThePontifical CommissiononMovies,RadioandTelevision,headedbyonAmericanbishop,has beenmadeapermanentofficeoftheHoly See,attachedtotheVaticanSecretariatof State.

HisHolinessPopeJohnXXIIItooktheactionina decreeorMotuProprio(decreedonthePope's"own authority")regardingthestatusofthecommission. isdatedFebruary22,butwasnotpublisheduntil March11.Itisentitled"BoniPastoris"(oftheGood Shepherd),fromitsopeningwords.

Thelawwas,however,approvedinJanuary,1927,Beginningwithareferencetohiscoronationday

OnJanuary24,PopePiusXIhadaletterhehad rittentoCardinalGasparripublishedinL'OsservatoreRomano.theVaticanCitydaily,condemningthe Fascistlaw.

WhenMussolinirequestedresumptionofnegotiations,thePopeineffecttoldtheItalianleaderthat the notsettleddespitetheassurancesthat thelawdidnotaffectCatholicAction.

ThePopecitedthethreatenedclosingofacentre runbytheSalesianFathersandMussoliniinturn repliedthat"itwasinadvisabletodwellonunimportant,isolatedincidentswhiletheGovernmentgives constantproofsoffavourstowardtheChurch."

Thematterwasstillnotsettledbythetimethe Lateranpactsweresignedin1929.Twoyearslater theFascistGovernmentallowedCatholicyouth centresandorganisationstobeattacked.

ConcordatWasADelioateMatter

ButsoadamantwasthePope'sstandbothbefore andafterthenegotiationsthatthedictatorultimately settledwiththeHolySeeinSeptember,1931.

Evenmoreticklish,accordingtothePacelli diaries,wasthequestionoftheconcordat.Thiswas sodelicateamatterthate%enuptothedaybefore theconcordatwasratifiedbytheHolySeeandItaly, negotiationswerestillgoingon.

TheLateranpactsweresignedonFebruary11, 1929,buttheywerenotratifieduntilJune7ofthe sameyear.Thetwoleaderswereofteninopposition intheinterveningmonths.

MussoliniinaskingtheItalianParliamenttoratify thepactsalarmedthePopebyapparentlytryingto makeadistinctionbetweenthevalidityofthetreaty andthatoftheconcordat.

OnMay25,1929,thedictatoraologisedtothePope throughMarquisPacelliforcertainexpressionsinthe speechandpromisedtodeliveranothertocorrectthe first.

discourse,thePopedeclaredthathisfundamentalconcernisthatoftheshepherdfortheentireflockof God.This,hesaid,makeshimconstantlyattentive "totakingintoconsiderationallfactorsofmodern civilisationwhichhaveaninfluenceonthespiritual lifeofman."

AftersummingupandconfirmingpreviousprovisionsoftheHolySeeconcerningmovies,radioand television,thePopeaddressedtoallpersonsworking inthesemedia-apaternalandinsistentadmonition alwaystofollowthedictatesofanhonestandsensitiveconsciencepropertothoseinvestedwiththevery seriousdutyofeducation."

Theapostoliclettercontinuedwithanexhortation toallbishopstoseetoitthattherecommendations oftheencyclical"MirandaProrsus"("Remarkable Inventions")befollowed,particularlythosepertainingtotheestablishmentofnationalofficesformovies, radioandtelevision,andthosepertainingtothe variousactivitiesofaneducationalnature.

ThePopethenstatedthat,toassurethe"unityof directivesandofaction"oftheHolySeeinthisfield, newnormsweretobeestablishedforthefunctioning ofthePontificalCommissionforMovies.Radioand Television.

Hesaidthesenewnormswouldamounttoan amendmentofthepresentstatusofthecommission. whichwasestablishedin1954.

Bythesenewnormsthecommissionhasbeen establishedasapermanentofficeoftheHolySee attachedtotheSecretariateofState.Itwillhave thedutyofexamining,increasing,assistinganddirectingCatholicactivitiesinthefieldofmovies,radio andtelevisionthroughouttheworld.

Theletterprovidesthatthecommissionwillcontinuewithitspresentofficers.BishopMartinJ. O'Connor.rectoroftheNorthAmericanCollegehere, ispresidentofthecommission.

Itisalsoprovidedthatthesacredcongregations andtheotherofficesoftheRomanCuriawillrequest theopinionofthecommissionbeforetheyannounce

Thishedidbuthisspeechfailedtoquellthefears ofthePope,whomadeitclearthathewantedtoIprovisiemsorgrantauthorisationsrelatingtothefields protestatthemannerofhandlingtheconcordat. ofmovies,radioandtelevision.ForitspartthecomMussolini,inturn,saidthathehadnointentionofmissionwillgiveregularreportstothecongregations beingdisrespectfultowardthePopeandhadnoob-concerned. IntheletterthePopealsoannouncedcreationofa jectiontotheHolyFather'smakinghisthoughtsVaticanfilmlibrary"forthecollectionoffilmdocu- publicinalettertoCardinalGasparriwhichcouldmentationofinteresttotheHolySee."Heplaced bepublishedinallnewspapers. thecommissioninchargeofthelibrary. Mussolinihadasked,however,thattheletterre-

frainfromtouchingontheindivisibilityofthetreaty andtheconcordat.ThePope'sreactionwasthatto speakofthequestion"wastheleasthecoulddoto reassuretheCatholicsofthewholeworld"

ThePopefurthertoldMarquisPacellithat-he wouldinanycaseneverrenouncesovereigntyorterritoryunless,weretheconcordattobeviolated,he wouldtellthewholeworldthattheviolationofthe concordatalsoconstitutesaviolationofthetreaty ofwhichitisanecessarycomplement."

OnJune6,thedaybeforetheratification,Marquis Pacellidescribedthedayas"probablythehardestand mostdifficultdayofthetransactions."

WhenhefoundedtheP.P.I.in1919hewasspearheadingthereturnofCatholicstothenation'spolitical lifeaftertheirself-imposedabsenceofalmost40 years.However,bothheandhispartysoonfell, victimstofascism.

Hisuncompromisingstandinfavourofprivateenterpriseandagainstmonopoly,eitherStateorprivate, maynothaveendearedhimtosomepoliticians,yet theChristianDemocraticpartyhaspaidtributetohis leadershipandcourage.

ThelateItalianPresidentLuigiEinaudimadehim amemberoftheItalianSenateforlifein1952and FatherSturzostillgoestotheSenatetotakepartin importantvotes.

ItgrewoutoftheCatholicmovementinEurope anditspoliticalbattlesduringthelate19thandearly 20thcenturieswiththeanti-clericals.SimilarCatholicpartiesinGermanyandFrancegrewoutofthe anti-clericalandanti-CatholicmovementofBismarck'sKulturkampfandFrenchradicalism.Infact, henoted,theformationofCatholicpoliticalparties inEuropewasduemoretohistoricalandpolitical problemsthantotheologicalones.

AsDonLuigiexplained,theP.P.I.wasnotfaced withthedangerofCommunismaswastheChristian DemocraticpartyafterthesecondWorldWar.The P.P.I.soughttocombatthepressureoftheanticlericalsandtofightforlimitedcentralGovernment andfulllocalautonomy.
