ThemostdramaticmessagethatAlmightyGodevergavetomankindconcerningthemysteryofsufferingwasgiventhe dayOurLordwascrucified.
0 Onthatday,onMount Calvary,therewerethree crosses--thecrossofOur Lord,thecrossofthegood thief,andthecrossofthe badthief.
ThecrossofOurLord representsallthosecrosses whichGodplaceslimnthe shouldersoftheinnocent.
Thecrossofthegoodthief representsallthosecrosses whichGodplacesuponthe shouldersofsinnerswho amendtheirlives.
Thecrossofthebadthief representsallthosecrosses whichGodplacesuponthe shouldersofsinnerswhorefusetorepent.
Tothepeoplewholooked towardthehillofCalvary onthefirstGoodFriday, thosethreecrosseslooked verymuchalike, forthey sawthemonlythrough humaneyes.
Butwhenwecomeclose tothemandseethemin thelightofFaith,through theeyesofChrist,thereis atremendousdifference.
ThecrossbornebyOur LordissentbyGod'ssheerlove-toredeemtheworld.
Thecrossbornebythegood thiefissentbyGod'smercy tohealandstrengthen-to purify.Thecrossborneb thebadthiefissentby God'sjustice-topunish anddestroy.
Therealtragedy,theonly tragedyonthosethree crosses,tookplaceonthe thirdcross:thecrossofthe unrepentantthief.
Inallthewideworld thereisnothingsosad,so tragic,asfruitlesssorrow. Sufferingisbadenough,always;butinGod'swisdom

Butsufferinginbitterness, inrebellion,madlyfrustrated,despairingofany good-thereislife's greatesttragedy!Andsuch wasthesufferingofthebad thief,themanwhoborethe crossofGod'sjustice.
Thebadthiefwasaman whohadreceivedthegift oflifefromGodandhad madeacompletemessofit. Likeamanwhotakesa flashlightandinsistson usingitsgoldenbeamto searchamongthedunghills oftheearth.
Asoulthatshouldhave beenatempleofGod,he fashionedintoapenny shrinewherehesetupthe tinidolofhisowntinyego. Therehekeptvigil. There heworshipped.
Finally,justicecaughtup withhimOnthecrossof bittersufferinghepaidhis debttoGodandman.But asalwaysinthislife,the handofGod'sjusticeheld outmuchmercy.
AndthismercyofGod wasshowninthreeways: first,Godblockedhimon thewrongroadhetravelled secondly,Godinvitedhim foturnback;thirdly,God Himselfshowedhimthe way.
