GreatestTragedyWasThiefWhoDiedInSin

ThemostdramaticmessagethatAlmightyGodevergavetomankindconcerningthemysteryofsufferingwasgiventhe dayOurLordwascrucified.

0 Onthatday,onMount Calvary,therewerethree crosses--thecrossofOur Lord,thecrossofthegood thief,andthecrossofthe badthief.

ThecrossofOurLord representsallthosecrosses whichGodplaceslimnthe shouldersoftheinnocent.

Thecrossofthegoodthief representsallthosecrosses whichGodplacesuponthe shouldersofsinnerswho amendtheirlives.

Thecrossofthebadthief representsallthosecrosses whichGodplacesuponthe shouldersofsinnerswhorefusetorepent.

Tothepeoplewholooked towardthehillofCalvary onthefirstGoodFriday, thosethreecrosseslooked verymuchalike, forthey sawthemonlythrough humaneyes.

Butwhenwecomeclose tothemandseethemin thelightofFaith,through theeyesofChrist,thereis atremendousdifference.

ThecrossbornebyOur LordissentbyGod'ssheerlove-toredeemtheworld.

Thecrossbornebythegood thiefissentbyGod'smercy tohealandstrengthen-to purify.Thecrossborneb thebadthiefissentby God'sjustice-topunish anddestroy.

Therealtragedy,theonly tragedyonthosethree crosses,tookplaceonthe thirdcross:thecrossofthe unrepentantthief.

Inallthewideworld thereisnothingsosad,so tragic,asfruitlesssorrow. Sufferingisbadenough,always;butinGod'swisdom

sufferingisoftenthegatewaytojoy,likethemother whoremembersnomoreher sorrowforjoythataman isbornintotheworld.

Butsufferinginbitterness, inrebellion,madlyfrustrated,despairingofany good-thereislife's greatesttragedy!Andsuch wasthesufferingofthebad thief,themanwhoborethe crossofGod'sjustice.

Thebadthiefwasaman whohadreceivedthegift oflifefromGodandhad madeacompletemessofit. Likeamanwhotakesa flashlightandinsistson usingitsgoldenbeamto searchamongthedunghills oftheearth.

Asoulthatshouldhave beenatempleofGod,he fashionedintoapenny shrinewherehesetupthe tinidolofhisowntinyego. Therehekeptvigil. There heworshipped.

Finally,justicecaughtup withhimOnthecrossof bittersufferinghepaidhis debttoGodandman.But asalwaysinthislife,the handofGod'sjusticeheld outmuchmercy.

AndthismercyofGod wasshowninthreeways: first,Godblockedhimon thewrongroadhetravelled secondly,Godinvitedhim foturnback;thirdly,God Himselfshowedhimthe way.

Firstthen,Godblocked theroadhetravelled.Since Godspeaksbyactionsas wellasbywords,Hewas tellinghim:Stop!You'reon thewrongroad!Youareat

havebeenleading.Turn back!

Nowtoturnbackonthe roadthatleadstoHellis simplytorepent!Thisre- quiresGod'sgrace.So, withoutforcingtheman's freewill,withoutbreaking downthedoorofhispenny shrine,God'sgracestrongly urgeshimtochangehis heartandmind-toopen thedoorandletthetrue Godcomein.

WhiletheDivineGuest waitsoutside,aconflict startswithin.Thetinyidol healwaysserved,henow findshardtogiveup.Being aconfirmedthief,hestill wantstostealtheshow.So, firstherunstruetoform andshoutsdefianceathis tormentors.

SecondChance

Then,asthetorturing hourswearon,hefindshimselfmoreandmoreignored. ThemobhasmadetheMan inthemiddletheobjectof itsabuse.

Soagainhehastocapturethespotlight.Witha suddenshowofbravadohe coarselyjoinsinthederision.HemockstheManin themiddlebecauseitmakes himfeelsuperior.

But,inthisveryactof blasphemy,Godwasagain showinghimmercy.Hewas showinghimthe"way." Whileinwardlydivinegrace soughttopiercetheheavy fogofasoulsunkdeepin sensuality,outwardlynow OurLordgavehimamagnificentexampleofpatient submissionandsilentcourage.

Themanexperienced conflictingemotions.Hewas impressedwiththedignity, theappearanceofgreat hiddenpowerthatshone forththroughOurLord's sufferings.HesensedOur adeadend!NolongercanLord'sinnocence.Thevery youleadthekindoflifeyouwordofthemob"Kingof

theJews"and"TheMessiah",begantostrikehis earswithnewmeaning.He rememberedhearingabout "theChrist"whowasto cometosavetheworld.His thoughtssoaredoutward, upward.

Andthencamethetragic andsuddenreversal.Like everyhardenedcriminalhe wasanextremeegoist.All hislifehehadtriedtobend heavenandearthtodohis will.Andnow,onthebrink ofeternity,alreadyglimpsingthegoodnessandpower ofGod,allhedecidedto thinkofwashowtobend suchmightypowertohis selfishpurpose.

Fuminginwardly,his heartrebelling,inahot burstofanimalpassionhe finallycriesout:Areyou nottheChrist?Well,save yourself!Andsaveus!Get usoffthesedamnable crosses!

Hiscompanionwasgoing throughthesameinnerturmoil, buthewasalready beginningtoacceptsufferingthewayGodwished himto.Herebukedhis blasphemouscompanionand remindedhimthatJesus haddonenothingwrong, thattheyoughttofearGod fortheyweresuffering justly.

Mostpeopleseemtothink thatGod'sjusticecatchesup withsinnersonlyineternity.There,indeed,the finalscoreisreckoned.But evenhereonearthGod's justiceisconstantlyoperating,

Asavirtuejusticeissaid tobepresentinaman'ssoul whenthatmanwantsto giveeveryoneelsehisdue. Wheremanypeopleget mixedupinjusticeisnotin theirdesire.Everyman wantsjustice.Butnotevery maniswillingtofindout whatisjusttohimself, what isjusttohisneighbour,

whatisowedtohiscountry andtoGod.

Todecidewhatisjust,we musthonestlylookintothe law-thelawthatmeasures justiceanddeclaresourobligationstoourselvesandto others.

Manylawsthattellus whatisjustaretobefound inourtownandcityordinancesandintheStateconstitution.TheFederalGovernment,likeeverylawful government,wascreates "inordertoestablishjustice."

But,beforeanymanmadelawbecomesareal law,itmustfirstagreewith ahigherlaw-thelawof God.Anylawthatfailsto agreewiththelawofGod hasnobindingforce.Itis nostandardforjustice, God'slawsarebuilt rightintotheverynature ofthethingsHehasmade. Whenadoctorgoestocollegetostudymedicine,he doesnotintendtomakeup lawsforthehumanbody. Hesimplywantstoseewhat arethelawsaccordingto whichGodmadeit.Aswith thelawsofthebody,sotoo withthelawsofthesoul.
