HisGracetheArchbishop saidabriefwordofsincere felicitationtothepriests andtotheparishionersof St.Benedict's,Applecross, ontheacquisitionofthe splendidbuilding.

Eventhoughtheparish wasonlysixyearsold,said HisGrace,inthatshort spaceoftimeithadbeen hisprivilegetocomethere fourtimesinordertobless buildings.

Onthefirstoccasionin 1953whenheblessedthe originalschoolandpresbytery;thenin1955forthe extensiontotheschooland in1957otherextensionsalltheseentailingacostof nearly£18,000withoutfurnitureandwithouttaking thepriceofthelandinto account.

Nowhewasprivilegedto blessthenewbuilding whichhadcostintheregion of£20,000,andallhecould saywasthatitrequired courageonthepartof priestsandpeopletoundertaketheextrafinancial liabilitywhichitwas ConcludedonPage4.

TwoAquinasboyswontheonlytwoagriculturalsciencescholarshipsawardedinthis StatebytheCommonwealthGovernmentfor theUniversityofWesternAustralia.

TheyareMichaelRedmondDoherty,sonofMr. andMrs.H.J.Dohertyof Cunderdin,andBrianRoy Martin,sonofMr.andMrs. H.MartinofChittering

Boththeseboyshave beenboardersatAquinas Collegesince1952.Inthe Leaving examination MichaelDohertypassedin sevensubjectswithdistinctionsinmathsAandB, physicsandchemistry.

BrianMartinwasanunder-officerintheCadet CorpsandMichaelDoherty wasintheseacadets.

InhisfinalyearBrian wasaprefectoftheSodalityofOurLady,inthe secondXIatcricket,the thirdXIinhockey,inthe third thecrewatrowingand secondeightatrowing, 1958.Hewasalsoamemberofthedebatingteam. The worthscholarshipsare £40peryearfor fouryears.

"IftheneedfortheHolyNameSociety wasevidentwhenitwasinaugurated,the needoftheSocietyisevenmoreevidenttoday,"saidHisGracetheArchbishopinan addresstothe13thannualconventionofthe PerthHolyNameSocietyonSundaylast.

Theywerenotonly threatenedbyCommunists, towhomallreligionwas theopiumofthepeople,but frommanydirections.

Theyhadreadinthe paperthatweekofthebook publishedbytheBritish MedicalAssociationwhich advocatedfreeloveand saidthatchastitywasoutmoded.

ThatwasfromtheB.M.A. whichwasknownforits highethicalcodeandinfluenceinBritainandthroughouttheBritishCommonweatlh.

"IsitanywonderthatI saythatChristianityand

Thesightofsomanymen openlyprofessingandpractisingtheirfaith,suchas thespectaclesprovidedby theannualrallyinthe CathedralandtheAquinas processionmustmakea tremendousimpressionon non-Catholicsandmust leaveanindelibleimprint Onimpressionableyouth.

Forthatreason,saidHis Grace,hewasdisappointed tolearnfromthesecretary'sreportthattherewereso manybrancheswhichhad noijuniormembers.Junior membersweretheCatholic menoftomorrowandthe futuremembersoftheir society.Everyparishand everybranchshouldhave itsjuniors.

Historiansglorifiedhow thecrusadersofoldwent offtodefendtheirprinciples onawaveoffrenziedzeal andenthusiasm.TheChurch likewisewasproudofthe. HolyNamemenwhowaged perhapsalessspectacular, butnonethelesseffective, waragainstirreligion,in decencyandimmorality whereveritwastobe found.

Thatthoughtshouldgowithusintotheclimaxof Lent-HolyWeek-whentheChurchre-enactsthe ineffabledramaofredemption.Againthisyearby thegreatwisdomandsolicitudeofthelateHoly Fatherforthecommonman,Catholicsmayparticipateinthesacredmysteriesinamoreintimate mannerthaneverbefore.TherestoredritesofHoly Week,fromthepointofviewofconvenienceandof dramaticpresentation,shouldhaveaprofoundimpact oneveryCatholicwhoavailshimselfoftheChurch's intentionininauguratingthereform.Andjustas weshareeachoneofusinthemeritsofChrist's salvicdeathandintheCrosswhichHelaysonthe Church,sotoo,welookthroughthedarknessforthe certainhopeofHerandourresurrection.

WhatdeepensthetragedyofChrist'sre-enacted Passionisthatforsomanyinourtimetheabyss ofgriefisonlyenqualledbytheabyssofignorance. ItcannotbutbeatormenttotheChristianconscience thatforthemassesofoursecularisedsocietyGood FridayandEasterSundayarenothingmorethan holidays.Thereisverylittlemaliceintheworld's attitudetoChristbutthereissheerlackofknowledge whichmountsfromgenerationtogeneration.Those whoaspiredinthelastcenturytoteardownthe crucifixesfromtheclassroomshavesucceededalltoo well.NottheleastofthesorrowsofHolyWeekwill bethatforsomanyChristseeminglyhasdiedinvain. WithHimthereisplenteousredemption,butthe goodnewsoftheGospelisnotwidespread.

EachEasterinthelifeofthisgenerationmust thereforemeantoeachCatholicagreatdealmore thanpersonalrenewalinChrist.Thekeynoteof ourtimes,soundedagainandagainbythePopes isapostolicity.Unlessthespiritoffaithandcharity super-aboundsandflowsoutintothehowlingspiritual wildernessthatisallaboutus,ourCatholicismwill becomeasterilething,amerematterofstalehabit anduncomprehendingconformity.ThetestofvivifyingfaithisthepassionforconquestforChrist.He cametocastfireontheearthandeachmustaskhimselfatPassiontidewhatpartheplaysinthedivine arson.WhatwaswononGolgothamustbereticulated toallmenanditwillbethecriteriaoftheJudgment whetherwefedandgave,drinktothoseofourtimes whoaredyingfromspiritualmalnutrition.

FatherLukeJ.Chittur,themanageroftheCatholichighschoolsystemwhichwouldbeaffectedby thebill,recalledthattheIndianconstitutiongives minoritiesarighttoconductschoolsandsaidan earlierSupremeCourtdecisionaffirmedtheposition ofCatholicsasaminoritygroup.Itisonthesepoints thatthecourtsmaybeaskedtoruleinregardtothe newbill.

Intheeventthattheschoolbillisenforced,the priestsaid,Catholicscouldeitherjoinwithother privateschoolinterestsinclosingtheirschoolsor theycouldforegothegovernmentfinancialgrants andcontinueasminorityschools.

Thereisnoquestionatall,heinsisted,ofCatholicsabandoningtheirrighttoeducatetheirchildren inthepropermanner.

AsFatherChitturspoke,aspokesmanoftheNayar ServiceSociety,apowerfulHindugroup,challenged thebillandsaidtheschoolsconductedbyhissociety could"neverobey"theprovisionsofthelaw.He didnotexplainwhetherthismeantthattheNayar schoolswouldclosedownratherthansubmit.
