OnSundaylost,HisGracetheArchbishopblessedandofficiallyopenedthenewschool-churchofSt.BernadetteatGlendalough. SituatedinJugan-cres.,Glendalough,thenewbuildingisof brickandtile.Untilthereisasufficiencyofchildrentoopen theschool,thebuildingwillbeusedasachurch.Itwillaccommodatecomfortablyfrom150-200people.

HisGraceassuredthe peoplethathavingbeenestablishedasaparishthey wouldgrowfromstrength tostrength.Toensure securityandtomakethe newparishaworkableproposition,thepresentboundarieswouldbeextended bytheacquisitionofsome territoryfromLeederville andOsbornePark.

TheArchbishopcongratulatedtheparishonits "comingofage."Hethankedthearchitect,hecongratulatedthebuilder.He thankedFr.StinsonandFr. TomichofOsbornePark andFr.O'BrienofGlendaloughfortheircareofthe peopleofGlendalough.

Fr.LeachthankedHis Graceforhisencouragement,andpromisedthatthe peoplewouldjustifythe Archbishop'sconfidencein them.Asmostofthepeople presentwerecontributingto fund-raisingschemes,no formalappealwouldbe made,butallcontributions wouldbegratefullyreceived.Theproceedingsconcludedwiththeservingof afternoontea.

TheRev.C.StinsonwelcomedHisGracetothe parishandpaidtributeto theArchbishop'swisdomin providingearlyforgrowing needsofthisexpandingdistrict.

Thepeoplewereimmenselygrateful,andvery proudofbeingelectedto thestatusofaparish.FrStinsonwelcomedFr.Leach thenewly-appointedparish priestofGlendalough.

Twooftheseniormen oftheparish,Mr.F.KnuckeyandMr.P.McCarthy welcomedtheArchbishop, andassuredhimofthe gratitudeoftheparishioners TheyalsowelcomedFr. Leachandpromisedhim completeloyaltyandcooperation.

HisGracethar.kodFr. Stinsonandthepeoplefor theirwelcome.Hehad beenwatchingthesituation atGlendaloughcarefully,he said.TenyearsagoMgr. Langmeadrequestedhimto seeifitwouldbepossibleto arrangeforaparishMass tobecelebratedinthe chapeloftheLittleSisters atGlendalough.

TheLittleSistersgraciouslyagreedtohisrequest andforthelasttenyears theyhadmadetheirchapel availabletothepeople.

HisGracesaidhecould notfindwordstoexpress hisgratitudetoMgr.Langmeadforhisforesight,and totheSistersfortheir generousco-operation.It hadalwaysbeenunderstood thattheuseoftheSisters' chapelwasonlyatemporaryexpedient.

Thepresentsiteofthe newbuildinghadbeenacquired,andassoonasthe areahadexpandedsuffiently,itwasdecidedtoestab-

lishGlendaloughasaparish Plansweredrawnupby Mr.WilliamBennett.Tenderswerecalledfor,andthe contractwasgiventothe lowesttenderer,Mr.S.Costello.

Thecostofthebuilding was£5,550unfurnished. Thebuildingwouldbeused asachurchimmediately, andasfromSunday,March 1 therewouldbetwo Masses,celebratedatSt.

Bernadette'severySunday, thefirstat6.30,thesecond at8.30.

Fr.Leachwouldtake overthenewparishon Sunday,May18,untilthen itwouldbeadministeredby OsbornePark.Whenthere wasasufficiencyofchildren oftherightagegroup,then theschoolwouldbeopened. Itwouldbestaffedbythe SistersofMercyfromWest Perth.

IntheLentenRegula- tionsprintedonPage7,an omissionhasbeenmade.

PassionSundayisrecogntsedthroughouttheArchdioceseastheoccasionfor therecitationofcontinuous Rosaries.Normallytherecitationiscommencedafter thelastparochialMassand iscontinueduntilthecommencementoftheEvening Devotions.

Alreadymostbranches havesettheirorganisations inmotionforthisoccasion whichfallsonSunday, March15.Inmostbranches membersrosterthemselves inhalf-hourlyperiodsto leadtherecitationofthe

Rosaries.Thegrowingattendanceofparishioners eachyearisagratifying featureofthisobservance.

Acomprehensivereport onth ti'ti fth eacveso e Cathedralbranchduringthe pastyearwastabledatthe lastmeetingoftheDiocesan Executive. Withaseniormembershipof120theaverage attendanceatHolyCommunionwas100.Thebranch hadagainsucceededin completelyoccupyingoneof the1958retreatswhenforty membersattended.Anallnightvigilwasheldbymen ofthesocietyonHoly Thursday.Eachhourof thewatchwasconductedas aseparateHolyHourunder theleadershipofamember appointedforthepurpose. Atallceremoniesheldin theCathedralduringthe yearHolyNamemenactedasushers.Ithasbeen decidedthataftertheHoly CommunionattheHoly NameMasstheLitanyof theHolyNameberecited publicly.Thishasproved mostsuccessful.

"WeshouldnotallowthetoourclaimsforStateaid ideatogetintoourheads," saidHisLordship,"notmatterhowoftenitispreached bypress,radioandnewspapersthattheChurchis behindthetimesinher teachingonmoralityandon thefamily.Thatisalie. CommentingontheorganisationoftheSocialWeek HisLordshipsaidthathe wasdelightedthatthediscussionmethodhadbeen usedsoextensively.Ithelpedpeopletorealisethat theywerecapableoftalkingonsubjectslikethe Church'steachingonthe family.

Heaskedthosewhohad takenparttobecome apostlesforventuresofa similarnature.Hestressed thebenefitstobederived fromlearningmoreand moreabouttheteachingsof theChurch.

"TheChurchdependson you,"hesaid"tobeher agents,herapostles,because youmixwithpeoplewhom priestsnevermeet."

Hesaidhewasallinfavour ofCatholicmarriedpeople gettingtogethertodiscuss theircommonproblemsand lustasPre-Canaconferences wereahelptoencased couplessoCanaconferences shouldbeagreathelpto marriedcouples.

Animpressivepanelof sneakerspromotedconsiderablediscussiononproblems affectingCatholicfamilies attheChristianSocial Weekwhichclosedlast Sundaynight.

Ontheooeninngnight FatherC.Stinsoninsummingupsaidthatthemembersofalldiscussiongrours wereofonemindaboutthe needtobringchildendowmentpaymentsup-to-date, andtorelatingthemtothe basicwage.Maternityallowanceshouldoperateon aslidingscale.

Hesaidthatitwashigh timewegavemorepublicity

fordenominationalschools. Healsoputforwardthe suggestionthatCanaconferoncesformarriedcouples shouldbeconductedona parishbasis.Thesubjectfor thefirstnightwas"The FamilyandtheState."

Onthesecondnight"In- sidetheFamily"wasthe subjectwithspecialemphasisoncommonsensearventionumentsagainstbirthpreanddivorce.Mr. P.Traversintroducedthe subjectwithaprovocative talkonGod'spurposein makingmaleandfemale.

Hesuggestedthatcharity waspromptedbythisand bymarriedlifeasawhole ifanattemptwasmadeto fulflGod'splan.

TheRev.P.Quinnout-linedthehistoryofdivorce inBritishLaw."Wehave hadjustonehundredyears ofexperimentwithdivorce," peopleexperimentedfor hesaid."Beforethat, 1857 marriageyearswithChristian withoutdivorce." Hemadeacomparisonof thetwoexperiments.

OnthefinalnightDr. GraveoftheUniversity staffpin-pointedafewof themanyproblemsfacing Catholiccoupleslivingina worldofalienvalues.He stimulateddiscussionbydoingnomorethanhintingat someoftheelementsof anyattemptedsolutions.

TheRev.P.Cunningham, summingupthefinaldiscussion,saidthattensions wereinevitablebetween maturehumanpersonalities. TheChurchcouldgive peopletheprincipleson whichtheirproblemscould besolvedbutaslaypeople theyhadafieldtoworkin wheretheymustapplythe principlesandworkout thedetailsthemselves.

Hestressedtheneedof sexinstructionforchildren sayingthatthelateHoly Fatherhadmadeitclear thatthedutyandprivilege ofgivingsuchinstruction belongedprimarilytothe parentsthemselves.

InajointpastorallettersignedalsobyHisEminenceJuliusCardinalDoepfner,BishoofBerlin,they statedthattheRedsaretryingtodegradetheChurch byreplacingitsceremonieswithsecularrites.

Monday,Feb.16,broughttoaclosethe longlifeofMrs.MaryFurlong,who deportedthislifefortifiedbytheritesof HolyChurch.

Deceased,whohadattainedtheripeoldageof nearly90years,wasborn inToodyayinOctober, 1869.

Shewasthewifeofthe lateJohnNicolasFurlong whopre-deceasedherby35 years.

Oneofhertenchild-en diedyoung,alltheothers stillsurvive,aswellas eightgrandchildrenand fourgreat-grandchildren.

ThiswonderfulCatholic mothernoblyandgenerouslysurmountedthemany dfficultiesbywhichher widowhoodwasbeset,gave excellenttraining and exampletoherlargefamily, allofwhomareacreditto theFaiththeyprofess.

The"Mass-formfor popularparticipation"which wasusedatthisMassis somethingthathasbeen eagerlyawaitedsinceits undertakingwasfirstannouncedatthe"Living ParishWeek"heldatSt. Patrick'sCollege,Manly lastyear.

Hehadarrivedfiftyyears toolateformuchofwhat MonsignorHartiganwrote of,butheregaledhis hearerswithreminiscences ofaltarboyswhowereat leasttheequalofMcEvoy, andreferredtothe"Curate's MotorBike."

Mostofall,hesaid,he appreciatedthegenerous hospitalitythathadbeen shownhim,andthewaythe peopleoftheWestandof 'he'Fieldshadreceivedhim. Hewastouchedthatso manyhadcometosay"AuRevoir,"andhehopedto bebackoncemorewith theminanotheryear.

In"Responsoriai"singing, (whichwastheChurch's earliestmethodofmakingit easyforthepeopletojoin insong)thepeoplehave onlytolearnasimplekeynote-refrainwhichtheyteoeataftereachverseofthe hymn:theversesaresung byasmallchoir,orevena singlecantor.

Thissavesthepeoplefromtheratherformidable taskoflearningreamsof newhymns:alltheneedto knowisalittlechorusfor eachhymn,whichisits mostimportantpart.

Askedabouthisnew hymns,Mr.Connollysaid: "Itisnotformetocommentontheirmusicalquality.ButI'matleastsure thatthey'reeasytosing. I'vetriedthemoutwith groupsofchildren,andthey seemtopickuptherefrain withoutanyworryatall.

InamemorandumsenttotheSouthwarkclergy, theBishopsaidthatnothingisworsethanforthe faithfultobepresentatMassinertandpassive.

BishopCowderoyissuedinstructionstoguideparish priestsinabidingbytheinstructiononparticipation ofthefaithfulintheliturgy,whichwaspublished bytheSacredCongregationofRiteslastautumn.

Inthatinstructionwhichhadthespecialapproval ofthelatePopePiusXII,theHolySeelistedfour progressivestepstowardsgreatercongregational recitationorsingingoftheprayersoftheMass.

Inhismemorandum,BishopCowderoysaidparish priestsarenotobligedtoputtheinstructioninto effectuntilitcanbedonewithdignity.

ButhesaiditmustberememberedthattheHoly Seewishes,whereverpossible,thatthelaityshould beenabledtouseatleastsomeoftheconcessions.

Vienna,Feb.16.-The LeagueofAustrianCatholicWomenorganiseda nation-wide"DayofFamilies'Fasting"tohelpraise moneyfortheChurch'smissions.

Austrianfamiliescontributedmorethan£46,000 totheprojectonasimilar dayofvoluntaryfasting lastyear.Mostofthemoney wasusedtobuyricefields fororphanages,founda homefortheagedandas-istavillageforvictimsof leprosy,allinKorea.

Toodyay'sDoubleTragedy

WhenMrs.W.J.FergusonandherdaughterPatricia(15),ofToodyay,weretragicallykilledinacaroccidentonFebruary 5,theyhadthesingulargraceofbeing anointedontheroadsidebyapriestreturninghomefromholidays.

Mrs.Fergusonandher daughterwerereturning fromPerthtoToodyaywhen thesmallsedanbeing drivenbyson-in-lawMr.T. E.Byersblewatyrenear the47-milepegonthe GreatEastern-hwy.,and crashedintotheconcrete foundationsoftheoldwater supplypipelinenearthe road.

Mrs.Fergusonwasthe daughterofaformerMethodistminister.Shewas educatedhoweverbythe DominicanSistersatDongara.

In1930shemarriedWilliamJ.Ferguson,having beenreceivedintothe Churchpreviously.Their earlymarriedlifewasspent atGoomalling,thenWonganHillsandfinallyat Deepdale,Toodyay.

Mrs.Fergusonwasnoted forherdeeplyreligious spirit.Herlifecentred abouttheMassandthe homiliesheardtherewere herguidesfortheweek.In thespaceof29yearsof marriedlifeshereared9 childrenandwasadmired forherunselfishdevotionto herhusbandandchildren.
