ThetragedyoccurredinPeelInletonWednesday, January28,whenafibre-glassdinghyinwhichFr. O'HaraandfivePresentationnunsweretravelling fromYunderuptoMandurahcapsized.
Twoofthenuns-SisterAquinasMcMahonand SisterAugustineGoodchild-wererescuedafterthe gruellingordealofclingingtotheupturnedboatfor 17hours.
RequiemMasswasofferedbyHisLordshipthe AuxiliaryBishop,theMostRev.J.J.Rafferty.The Rev.M.Casey(Nedlands)wasdeaconandtheRev. J.O'Shea(EastFremantle)wassub-deacon.The Rt.Rev.Mgr.E.Kennedy,V.G.,actedasassistant priest,whiletheceremoniesweredirectedbytheRev. F.Walsh.
AllSuffraganSeesRepresented
HisGracetheArchbishoppresidedatthethrone, assistedbytheRt.Rev.Mgr.A.T.Langmeadandthe Rt.Rev.Mgr.F.Collins. PresentinthesanctuarywastheMostRev.0. Raible,S.C.A.(retiredVicarApostolicofKimberley).

Thesurvivorshavebeen unabletogiveaclearaccountofhowthedinghy capsized.Itseemsthatthe previouslyplacidwaterbecamechoppyasasqually windfromthenorth-east sweptacrossPeelInlet.
Theboatstartedtotake inwaterandallaboard bailed.Suddenlythedinghy overturnedandthesixallnon-swimmers-were strugglinginthewater.
(PeelInletisnotorious forsuddensquallsand treacherouswindsduring hotweatherwhichhavea spiralactionsimilarto willy-willies.)
Allthroughthatnightof horrorthefivenunsandthe priestprayed.Buttheir prayerswerenotdirectedto theirownrescue.Their calmbutagonisedsupplicationbesoughtofGod'ssalvationforthesin-drenched worldandforthevictory oftheChurchoverCommunism.
Theywerecompletelyresignedtodieandaskedonly thatifdeathmustbetheir lotthesacrificeoftheir livesbeacceptedforthese intentions.

Astheoldernunsgrew weakerFatherO'Haragave absolutiontothefiveof them.

Whenthesaddetailsofthattragedybecame knownawaveofgloomandsorrowandsympathysweptovertheStateandoverthewhole nationandbeyondit.
Eventheoldestofthevictimswascomparativelyyoung-thelateMotherPatriciawas only50.Theothersrangedinagefrom37to 26;alltheymaysaywereintheprimeoflife.
IthadpleasedthegoodGodinHisowninscrutabledesigntocallthemtoHimself,tocall themfromourmidsteventhoughtheharvest wasgreatandthelabourerswerefew.
Andthoughtheirheartsthatmorningwere ladenwithsorrow,theywerealsofulloffaith, hope,confidenceandresignationtotheWillof Godandtheyutteredthatferventfiat,"Thywill bedone."WiththeresignationofholyJobthey exclaimed:"TheLordhasgivenandtheLord hastakenaway,blessedbethenameofthe Lord."
Fr.O'Harawasonly29,ordainedatAllHallows'College,Dublin,onJune12.1955.He arrivedinFremantleonthe12thNovemberof thesameyear.
Thoughhewasonlyabrieftimeamongstthem hemadeadeepandlastingimpressionbyhis piety,industry,method,dignifiedbearingandhis intellectualattainmentswhichwereofhigh
Inthreeyearswasconcentratedenoughhonest andsuccessfulactivityonbehalfofthosecommittedtohiscare,whichcouldhavebeenspread overamuchlongerperiodandstillproduced wonderfulresults.
Fr.JosephJohnO'Harawasgonefrom amongstthemandhisuntimelydeathlefta greatvoidintheranksofthediocesanclergy.
Thethreenunswereallselflessandefficient teachersinthePresentationNuns.Onewas localSuperioroftheheadhouse,anotherwas MistressofNovices,anotherwasonlyfinally professedafewweeksago.Buteventhough theywereefficientteacherstheywereaboveall loyalanddevotedreligious.
"Maywenotconfidentlyhope,"saidHis Grace"thattheywholefthomeland,fatherand mother,lefteverythingdeartothemandheeded thecallofOurLordtocometoAustralia,will receive,iftheyhavenotalreadyreceivedthe PromiserelatedbyOurLordinSt.Matthew, therewardonehundredfold,andreceiveeternal life.
"Theyleftallthingsintheirnativelandand crossedtheoceansanddevotedtheirlivestothe ChristianeducationoftheyouthofAustralia. Wehopethattheymayobtainwhatiswritten inthebookofDaniel:'Theythatinstructmany untojusticeshallshinelikestarsforalleternity.'

LeavingYunderupabout 4.30p.m.thepartieschangedover,thosewhohad travelledupbycartaking tothedinghy.
Whentheyhadnot arrivedatMandurahby9.20 p.m.thematterwasreportedtothepoliceandsearch partieswereorganised
Firstevidenceofthetragedywasprovidedat7a.m. thenextdaywhenprofessionalfishermenbroughtto thepolicethebGdkofanun foundabouttwomilesfrom Coodanup.
At10a.m.thesearchers sightedthesurvivingnuns clingingtotheupturned boat.BothSisterswere fullyclothedintheirhabits. Theyhadbeen17hoursin thewater.
Thebodyofanothernun wasfoundfloatinginthe water25Yardsaway.
Fr.O'Hara'sbodywasdiscoveredundertheboatentangledinarope.
Oneoftherescuerssaid that,despitetheirlongimmersion,thetwosurviving nunsweremarvellousin spirit,althoughveryweak.
