ThelateFr.O'Harawasassistantpriestinthe parishofMosmanPark.MotherPatriciawassuperior of"Iona,"Presentationconvent,MosmanPark; MotherFinbarrwasmistressofnovicesthereand SisterJoachimwasonlyrecentlyprofessedasaPresentationnun.

ThetragedyoccurredinPeelInletonWednesday, January28,whenafibre-glassdinghyinwhichFr. O'HaraandfivePresentationnunsweretravelling fromYunderuptoMandurahcapsized.

Twoofthenuns-SisterAquinasMcMahonand SisterAugustineGoodchild-wererescuedafterthe gruellingordealofclingingtotheupturnedboatfor 17hours.

RequiemMasswasofferedbyHisLordshipthe AuxiliaryBishop,theMostRev.J.J.Rafferty.The Rev.M.Casey(Nedlands)wasdeaconandtheRev. J.O'Shea(EastFremantle)wassub-deacon.The Rt.Rev.Mgr.E.Kennedy,V.G.,actedasassistant priest,whiletheceremoniesweredirectedbytheRev. F.Walsh.

AllSuffraganSeesRepresented

HisGracetheArchbishoppresidedatthethrone, assistedbytheRt.Rev.Mgr.A.T.Langmeadandthe Rt.Rev.Mgr.F.Collins. PresentinthesanctuarywastheMostRev.0. Raible,S.C.A.(retiredVicarApostolicofKimberley).

ThemusicoftheRequiemwaschantedbyapriests' choirofmorethan120clergyrepresentingtheArchdiocese,eachofthesuffraganSeesandthereligious orders.DelegatesfromthecommunitiesofBrothers andnunswerepresent.

AttheconclusionofMassBishopRaffertygavethe Absolutionandthefourcasketswereborneoutto thewaitinghearsesthroughthedense,reverentcongregation.

Itwasasceneofgreatpoignancyasthecortege circledVictoria-squareenroutefortheKarrakatta cemetery.

Itappearsthatthetragedydevelopedsomewhere between5and6p.m.in PeelInlet.Itwouldseem thattheoutboardmotorof thedinghycaughtfireand thatFr.O'Harathrewit overboard.

Thesurvivorshavebeen unabletogiveaclearaccountofhowthedinghy capsized.Itseemsthatthe previouslyplacidwaterbecamechoppyasasqually windfromthenorth-east sweptacrossPeelInlet.

Theboatstartedtotake inwaterandallaboard bailed.Suddenlythedinghy overturnedandthesixallnon-swimmers-were strugglinginthewater.

(PeelInletisnotorious forsuddensquallsand treacherouswindsduring hotweatherwhichhavea spiralactionsimilarto willy-willies.)

Allthroughthatnightof horrorthefivenunsandthe priestprayed.Buttheir prayerswerenotdirectedto theirownrescue.Their calmbutagonisedsupplicationbesoughtofGod'ssalvationforthesin-drenched worldandforthevictory oftheChurchoverCommunism.

Theywerecompletelyresignedtodieandaskedonly thatifdeathmustbetheir lotthesacrificeoftheir livesbeacceptedforthese intentions.

Duringthistimethey sawtheboatssearchingfor them-onepassedwithin 200yards.

Butthedarknightand thechoppywaterhidits victims.

Astheoldernunsgrew weakerFatherO'Haragave absolutiontothefiveof them.

supernaturalnobility. heavyhabitsandunableany longertoclingtothesmooth surfaceoftheboat,Mother PatriciaandMotherFinbarrdisappearedbeneath thesurfaceofthewater.

Overcomebyfatigue, FatherO'Harawasthenext tosuccumb.

Towardsmidnightthe moonrosebutalthoughthe nunscouldseetherescue boatsandhearvoicesthey werenotseenorheard.

GraduallySisterJoachim lostherprecariousholdon theboatanddriftedaway beneaththewater. Thesurvivorsclungon tilldaylightandcontinued theirprayersuntilat10 a.m.theywererescued.

AftertheGospel,HisGracethe Archbishoppreachedamovingpanegyricasfollows:

HisGracesaiditwasindeedaverysadduty thatdrewthemtogetherthatmorninginthe cathedraltojoininthecelebrationoftheholy sacrificeoftheMassandtorequestthesuffrages oftheChurchonbehalfofthefourvictimsof lastWednesday'sdreadfuldrowningtragedy.

Whenthesaddetailsofthattragedybecame knownawaveofgloomandsorrowandsympathysweptovertheStateandoverthewhole nationandbeyondit.

Eventheoldestofthevictimswascomparativelyyoung-thelateMotherPatriciawas only50.Theothersrangedinagefrom37to 26;alltheymaysaywereintheprimeoflife.

IthadpleasedthegoodGodinHisowninscrutabledesigntocallthemtoHimself,tocall themfromourmidsteventhoughtheharvest wasgreatandthelabourerswerefew.

Andthoughtheirheartsthatmorningwere ladenwithsorrow,theywerealsofulloffaith, hope,confidenceandresignationtotheWillof Godandtheyutteredthatferventfiat,"Thywill bedone."WiththeresignationofholyJobthey exclaimed:"TheLordhasgivenandtheLord hastakenaway,blessedbethenameofthe Lord."

Fr.O'Harawasonly29,ordainedatAllHallows'College,Dublin,onJune12.1955.He arrivedinFremantleonthe12thNovemberof thesameyear.

Thoughhewasonlyabrieftimeamongstthem hemadeadeepandlastingimpressionbyhis piety,industry,method,dignifiedbearingandhis intellectualattainmentswhichwereofhigh

Inthreeyearswasconcentratedenoughhonest andsuccessfulactivityonbehalfofthosecommittedtohiscare,whichcouldhavebeenspread overamuchlongerperiodandstillproduced wonderfulresults.

Fr.JosephJohnO'Harawasgonefrom amongstthemandhisuntimelydeathlefta greatvoidintheranksofthediocesanclergy.

Thethreenunswereallselflessandefficient teachersinthePresentationNuns.Onewas localSuperioroftheheadhouse,anotherwas MistressofNovices,anotherwasonlyfinally professedafewweeksago.Buteventhough theywereefficientteacherstheywereaboveall loyalanddevotedreligious.

"Maywenotconfidentlyhope,"saidHis Grace"thattheywholefthomeland,fatherand mother,lefteverythingdeartothemandheeded thecallofOurLordtocometoAustralia,will receive,iftheyhavenotalreadyreceivedthe PromiserelatedbyOurLordinSt.Matthew, therewardonehundredfold,andreceiveeternal life.

"Theyleftallthingsintheirnativelandand crossedtheoceansanddevotedtheirlivestothe ChristianeducationoftheyouthofAustralia. Wehopethattheymayobtainwhatiswritten inthebookofDaniel:'Theythatinstructmany untojusticeshallshinelikestarsforalleternity.'

"Tothebroken-heartedparents,brothersand sistersofthelateFr.O'Hara.tothenearrelativesofthelateMotherPatriciainCo.Clare,to thelittleIrishmotherofMotherFinbarrwhois stillaliveandtothemotherofSisterJoachim andonbehalfoftheclergyandreligiousand laityoftheArchdiocesewesendourheartfelt sympathy.

"Weprayforthesoulsofthevictims,andwe praytoothatGodwillgivestrengthandcourage tothosedearonesfarovertheseaswhoareleft tomourntheirloss.

"Onbehalfofall,too,Iexpresssympathyto theMotherGeneralofthePresentationnuns whohasbeenbereftofthreewonderfulreligious andIofferthesympathyofalltotheparish priestofMosmanParkwhoisbereftofafaithful,loyalandefficientassistant.

"Onbehalfoftherelativesofthedeceased andofthePresentationnunsIwishtothankthe CommonwealthGovernmentandtheIrishGovernment,whoarerepresentedheretodayby SenatorPaltridgeandMr.Butler,IrishCharge d'Affairesattheseobsequies.

"Iwouldwishtothankall,especiallythose whohelpedtosearchforthevictimsandall thosewhohelpedinanywayandtothecommunityatlargewhohavebeensokindandsympathetic.

"IthankthePressandtheradioandthecommunityatlargefortheirkindnessandsympathyinconnectionwiththissadtragedy.

GallantSearchersTestifyTo WonderfulSpiritOfSurtivors

ThecircumstancesinwhichFr.O'Hara andthreePresentationnunsweredrowned onJanuary28areobscureastodetail,but thegeneralpicture,basedonthereportof thetwosurvivingSisters,isasfollows:

OnthemorningofJan.

28tennunsandFr.O'Hara setoutonapicnictoYunderup,sevenmilesaway.

Onepartyleftbycar, andtheotherinFr.O'Hara's recently-acquired10ft.6in. dinghy,poweredbyanoutboardmotor.

LeavingYunderupabout 4.30p.m.thepartieschangedover,thosewhohad travelledupbycartaking tothedinghy.

Whentheyhadnot arrivedatMandurahby9.20 p.m.thematterwasreportedtothepoliceandsearch partieswereorganised

Firstevidenceofthetragedywasprovidedat7a.m. thenextdaywhenprofessionalfishermenbroughtto thepolicethebGdkofanun foundabouttwomilesfrom Coodanup.

At10a.m.thesearchers sightedthesurvivingnuns clingingtotheupturned boat.BothSisterswere fullyclothedintheirhabits. Theyhadbeen17hoursin thewater.

Thebodyofanothernun wasfoundfloatinginthe water25Yardsaway.

Fr.O'Hara'sbodywasdiscoveredundertheboatentangledinarope.

Oneoftherescuerssaid that,despitetheirlongimmersion,thetwosurviving nunsweremarvellousin spirit,althoughveryweak.

Thecentralfiguresamong thesearchersweretheRev. F.E.Hope(parishpriestof Mandurah),MissAnne Coughlan,ConstablesJohn KielyandCharlesBuckley, Messrs.AlfredandJoseph Okamoto,John,Georgeand DionLayton,andDudley Tucker.

PopePiusIXexpressedthedesiretoholdthelast ecumenicalcouncilin1864-fiveyearsbeforeit actuallyopened.Inthesetimesofairtraveland rapidcommunicationsitcanbesafelyassumedthat thetimeintervalwillbemuchshorter.However, nodatehasyetbeenset.

Thedate,accordingtopasttradition,willbepublishedinapapalbullofconvocation.Yetevenbefore thiscomestolightmuchorganisationalworkhasto beaccomplished.

Asthetimenearsforthecouncilthecardinalitial commissionwillsubdivideintocommitteesdrawing uptheorderofthesubjectsandtopreparetheplan ofthecouncil.Sincesuchameetinginvolvessomany bishopsandsomanypossibletopics,itisnecessary tolayoutanexactscheduleandpreciselydetailed orderofdiscussion.
