But,saidth;VaticanRadiospokesman,amore thoroughanalysisrevealssomethingquitedifferent.

ChargingthatMikoyanisnotnotedforhismodesty, VaticanRadiosaidhehadcomebyhisatheismdeliberately"withoutpangsofconsciencewhichmight leadhimtofurtherandmorethoroughresearch."

"Moreover,"saidthespeaker,"thechancecoincidenceofhisideaswiththoseofKarlMarx-great masterofhisparty-earnedhimthehighofficewhich heholds."

VaticanCity,Jan.20.-An"antithesis concerningessentialprinciples"existsbetweenChristianityandsocialism,according toafront-pageeditorialinL'Osservatore Romano,VaticanCitydaily.

Withoutreferringdirectlytotherecentlyconcluded congressoftheItalianSocialistpartyatNaples,the editorialmadeclearitwasreferringtoallwhoconceiveofsocialismasanacceptablepoliticalmovement.DuringthecongresssocialistdelegatesappealedtoCatholicstojointheminestablishinga socialistgovernmentinItaly.

TheeditorialreferredtoaChurch-approvedmeetinginMunichofscholarsandstatesmenlastyear, whichcametotheconclusionthatthereisnopoint ofconvergencebetweentheChurch'ssocialdoctrine andsocialism.

CitingPopePiusXI'sdenunciationofSocialismin hisencyclical"QuadragesimoAnno,"thepaperwent ontosay:"Despiteclearpapalteaching,somepeople, excessivelyconcernedwithimmediatepracticalconsiderations,wouldthinkofshelvingprinciplesat leasttemporarily."

liturgicalchurchesareprotestingthegovernment'sconcessionthatthechurches mayneedsomefurtherhelp"fromtheState inbuildingschools.

AnofficialWhitePaperoneducation,issuedin December,hintedatincreasedGovernmentaidtoward constructioncostsofchurchschools.TheoverwhelmingmajorityofthemareconductedbytheAnglicans andtheCatholics.

AsEducationMinisterGeoffreyLloydpreparedto speakontheeducationprogrammeintheHouseof Commons,Dr.A.R.Vine,generalsecretaryofthe FreeChurchFederalCouncil-whichgroupsProtestantchurchesotherthantheChurchofEnglandcameoutagainstfurtherStateaidtoreligiousschools.

TheFreeChurchesareopposedtoGovernment grantstoeitherCatholicorProtestantschools,he said,andwillpressforchannellingallpublicmoney availabletotheordinaryStateschoolswherereligious 1instructionisofanundenominationalcharacter.

Underthepresentsystem,theGovernmentcontributes50percent.oftheconstructioncostsfornew Churchschools.BothCatholicandAnglicanauthoritieshavepubliclyappealedforanincreaseofthe Stategrantsto75percent.

Butthe"ChristianWorld,"Congregationalistorgan, hasdeclared:"FreeChurchopiniongenerallystands uncomprisinglyagainsttheRomanCatholicclaimthat lamCatholicschoolsshouldbeprovidedverylargely attheexpenseoftheProtestantpublic."

ChinesePersecutionStretchesOut ToCatholicsOfInnerMongolia

HongKong,Jan.20.-TenChineseCatholicsinInnerMongoliahavebeen"brought tojustice"forplottingagainsttheChinese communistgovernment,accordingtoaRed Chinesepaperreachinghere.

TheRedjournalsaidthatalsothreeProtestants havebeenarrestedonsimilarcharges.

ThepaperlistedLiTsung-cheandWangHsi-Hsien asthe"leadersofacounter-revolutionarygroup hiddenwithintheCatholiccircle."andsaidthatthey hadbeensentencedto20and15yearsingaolrespectively.

Revelationofthenamesarousedspeculationhere concerningtheidentity%ofthetwoCatholicsmentioned.Itwasbelievedthatbecauseofdialectaldifferences,LiTsung-chemightbe54-year-oldBishop PacificLyHsuan-teofYenan.whoseSeeisnear InnerMongolia.

LikewisetherewasspeculationthatWangHsi-hsien couldbe48-year-oldArchbishopFrancisWang,of Suiyuan,whoseSeeisalsoinnorth-westcentral China.BishopLyisknowntohavebeenimpeded inhisdutiesforseveralyears.

TheChinesegivennameofArchbishopWangwas notimmediatelyavailablehere,sotherewasnofirm basisforthespeculationconcerninghim.Butboth prelateshaveSeesinthesamegeneralregion,are aboutthesameage,andwereelevatedtotheepiscopateinthesameyear,1951.

TheInnerMongoliapapersaiddidnotelaborateon thenamesoftheeightotherCatholicsorontheir fate.Itsaidthatall10were"broughttojustice"on October18.

FatherMarionPirozynski,C.S.R.,veteraneditor of"HomoDei,"popularlywrittenmonthlyforpriests, saidathistrial: "ItwasmydutytospreadthewordofGod."He addedthathewouldcontinuehiswork"whenIget outofgaol." FatherPirozynskiand10co-defendantswereall indictedonchargesconnectedwithpublishingactivities,primarilyinvolvingacquisitionofpaperonthe blackmarkettogetaroundtightrationingquotas.

Whilepleadingguiltytoviolatingcensorshiprules, FatherPirozynskipleadedinnocenttosixothercounts lodgedagainsthim,sayingthattheyshouldnotbe classifiedascrimes.

Asthetrialopened,FatherPirozynskiappearedin courtinciviliandressratherthaninthehabitofhis congregation.Askedbythecourtwhathisprofession is,heanswered:

ThedilemmawhichfacesCatholicsinthepolitical fieldtodayconcernsthealternativetoSocialism.For thekeisnodoubt,inAustraliaanyway,thatwhereas theLabourmovement,whichduringthepasthalfcenturyhasrepresentedmerelyanidealisticSocialism,ismovingrapidlyunderthestimulusofmodern historytowardssomethingperilouslyneartotalitarianism.Catholicsrecognisetheneedofsocialising, ifnotnationalising,certainnationalservicesand large-scaleindustrieswhichshouldneverhavebeen lefttothecapriciousmanagementandavariceofprivateindividuals.ButCatholicsalsorecognisethata highlycentralisedeconomicsystemsuchaswehave knownunderCapitalismisabout-togivewaytoan equallyhighlycentralisedpoliticalcontrol.Inthe midstofthemaniaforhavingeverythinglarge-scale andconcentratedinafewhands,thelibertiesofthe peopleperish.TheCatholictestofbothpoliticaland economiccontrolsiswhetherthethingdesiredcanbe efficientlybroughtaboutbyanylesseragencythan theState.Ifitcanthereisnovalidmoralargument fornationalisation.

Unhappily,inAustralia,socialinstitutionssuchas canbefoundinothercountries(notablyproducers' co-operativemovements)eitherdonotexistorlack maturityorhavegrownupamorphously.Sothat genuinesocialinstinctsandtendenciesarenotexpressedinanypracticalform.Itisthisweaknessof thesocialstructurewhichmakesthegrowthofState powerpossible,and,inthemindsofmany,irresistible. Sothatquiteaconsiderableproportionofourpopulation,whileitchafesunderexistinggovernmental bureaucracy,hasgiveninteriorconsenttothesettingupofafull-blownsocialismunderthejustifiable impressionthatthereisnoalternative.Andindeed itisdifficulttoblamepeopleforacceptingwhatthey sincerelybelievetobeinevitable.WhileAustralia persevereswiththetwo-Partysystem,therewillbe n6alternative,forthenon-Labourgroupingshave untilveryrecentlybeenovertlyinfavourofpreservirigthestatusquodespitethepatentfactthatCapitalismhasfinallybrokendown,nevertogoagain. Theylivewiththepoliticallydeadwithoutahopeof theresurrection.

Onefearsthatifthereisarealchangeofheart inthepoliticalexponentsofCapitalismitisinthe natureofadeath-bedrepentance.TheirsoleremainingvigourisnegativelyemployedagainstCommunism.SirWinstonChurchilloncesaidthatthedivisionatthenext(British)electionwouldbebetween thosewhosingthe"RedFlag"andthosewhosing "LandofHopeandGlory."Itisratheralargerissue thanmerelyadomesticBritishpoliticalstruggle. Itistheworlddivisionofourtime.Andunlessthe menwhostillbelieveinthepersonalownershipof smallproductivepropertycanorganisethemselves politicallyandbecomevocalitwillsurelyseemthat thereisnoalternativetotheever-encroachingpower oftheState.Itisallverywell'toconceiveofa Distributistsocietybeingbuiltontheruinsof Socialism;thatisindeedalong-rangeview.For Socialism,likeothertypesofslavery,mayprove capableofbeingprolongedindefinitely.Andtheloss oflibertyitselfisnolongerunaccompaniedwiththe lossofitsdesire.ThereisanalternativetoSocialism, butitsaccomplishmentisdepressinglyremote,becauseitisatonceunknownandofdifficulty.

Manymayfeel:"Well,it allmaybetrue,butwhat hasallthistodowithme? Itwon'thappeninmy family."Peoplewhothink thattheirfamily,their children,areimmuneto thoseinfluences,orthat thoseinfluencesareactive onlyinthelowerstrataof society,areinforashock.

Thoseinfluencesarepouringintotheirveryhomes andtheyareinfluencing themandtheirchildren. Everymeansofmasscommunicationwithoutexceptionisservingthiscampaign.

Andtheyaregenerously supportingalmostallof thosemeanswithoutaword ofprotest.Theyarewillingly,ifblindly,contributingtothesystematiccorruptionanddemoralisation oftheirownhome.

Thisatmosphereliesin thethingsthatcomebefore oureyeshundredsoftimes adayinadvertisements, radioprogrammes,movies, newspapers,comicsandthe like.

ForthehourandahalfthatthePopewas"missing" hewaspassingaquietvisitwithagedandretired priestsatahouseoftheFathersoftheSacerdotal FraternityatopRome'sMonteMario.
