ThereisaquietrevolutiongoingoninEastGermanyandtheSocviet-controlledlandis"bleeding." Thereisnoredbloodflowing,astherewasinHungarytwoyearsago.Thehaemorrhageispolitical. Itssymptomistheflowofthousandsofpersons fromEasttoWest,andnowitisnottheyoungsters dodgingdutyinthePeople'sPolice,ortheoldand sick,consideredworthlessbytheCommunists.The peoplewhoareleavingEastGermanynowarethose mostvitaltoanyState:thedoctors,scientists,educatorsandintellectuals.
Itispartlythelossofthesemenandwomen,who cannoteasilyorquicklybereplaced,whichhas drivenCommunistpartychiefWalterUlbrichtto demandthe"return"ofWestBerlintoEastGermany,andonNovember10causedastatementby KrushchevdemandinganendtothePotsdam agreement-andanendofthepresentFourPower ruleofBerlin.ForitisthroughWestBerlinthat themajorityofrefugeesfindsafety.
Statisticsandgeneraldescriptionsofthisexodus meanlittletoAustralians,whofinditdifficultto visualisethecauseortheresult.Onlyapersonal experiencecan,perhaps,bringhomethesituation tothemindsandheartsofthosewhositsatisfied andsafe,thousandsofmilesawayfromtheOrwellianworlddominatedbytheSoviets.
Suchanexperiencewasmyconversationtwo weeksagowithadoctorandhiswife,whoisalso adoctor.TheyhadarrivedinWestBerlinonly 48hoursbefore.Theywerestillunderthereaction totheirflight;themanwasnervous,hishands fumbledwithmatchesandcigarettesandhesometimesstutteredwhenhetalked.Hewasdressed inasuitcutinastyle20yearsold,fromcheapgray material.Hiswife,too,woreasuitofsimilar materialandherattemptsto"dressup"fortheinterviewweremorepatheticthanfashionable.But ifthemanhadreactedtohisordealwithnervousness,hiswifereactedwithvolubility.Shedidmost ofthetalking.
WhenKantorawiczwasaskedwhyhewaitedso longbeforeleavinghishighpositionattheCommunistUniversityofBerlin,heanswered:"Idid notleavetoolate.PerhapsIlefttoosoon."This woman,ontheotherhand,explainedthattheyhad leftatthelastpossiblemoment.
"WeareCatholics,"shesaid."Aslongaswe hadthechildreninourcarewecouldholdout againsttheCommunistideologies,forafterallwe areadultsandweKNOWthetruth.Butnowour eldestsonisoldenoughtostartschoolthisterm andsowehadtoleave.Theschoolsteachthese babiesthattheChurchistheenemyoftheState,and theyteachthechildrentoreporteveryanti-Communistwordtheyhear.Themindofachildoffive orsixishungryforknowledge,butitiswithout enoughjudgmenttodeterminerightfromwrong, especiallywhenbothrightandwrongcomefrom adults,fromthosewhotoweroverthechildrenin
knowledge,inpower,intheabilitytopunishand reward.Wehavegivenourtwochildrenmuchlove andaffection,andtheytrustusnow.Buthowcan achildknoworbetaughtnottoanswerquestions puttohiminschool?Andhowcouldwecontinue toopposetheatheistic,State-isticteachingsofthe Communistschools?Weknewitwastimetoleave."
Butitwasnotonlythequestionofthechildren whichdecidedthemtogetoutoftheCommunist zone.
"Wearedoctors,"themansaid."Underthe Nazis,weexpectedthatwhenwefinishedourmedicalstudieswewouldhavetojointhepartyinorder topractice.WhentheSovietstookoverourpart ofGermanyattheendofthewar,alldoctorswho hadbelongedtotheNaziparty,inwhatevercapacity orforwhateverreason,wereseverelypunishedby theCommunists.Theyweretold:"Doctorsmust beabovepartypolitics.Doctorsmustbepolitically neutral.'TheRedsputdoctorsjustoutofschool intobigjobsleftbytheolderdoctors,andtheyleft usprettymuchalonetodoourwork.Butrecently theyhaveputonsuchpressurethatitisimpossible tocontinuetopracticewithoutgivingupevery ethicalstandardadoctorbelievesin."

Thedoctor'sfaithisadmirable,anditwouldbe crueltodisillusionhim,butthefateofthousands uponthousandsofrefugeeswhoescapefromEast Germanyandothernationsheldcaptivebythe Sovietsisnotonetosustainhopeforverylong.
TherefugeecampsinWestGermanyareoverflowing,evennow,13yearsaftertheendofthewar. DoctorswhoemigratetotheUnitedStates,forinstance,arefacedwithstringentregulationsgoverningpractice,andevenemigrationisdifficult.PerhapsthisonewillgetachancetopracticeinWest Germany.Buttodayintheheadlinesthereisthe demandthatBerlinbe"returnedtotheDDR,the GermanDemocraticRepublic,"andthoughPresidentEisenhoweronNovember21definitelyassured theworldthattheWestwillnevergiveuptothe Communiststhisdoortofreedom,thereisfearin WestGermany-andfearinWestBerlin-that topreventanyhostilitiesthefreeworldmayyield toaprotractedcampaignofattrition.
GodhelpthepeopleofWestBerlin,andofall WestGermany,ifthecancerofCommunismtries toforceitswayacrossthislastborder.-America.
TheInternationalInstituteofLiturgical ArthasbeencreatedtogiveasteadyimpulsetoSacredArtwhich,inthesetimes,is passingthroughaperiodofprofoundcrisis. ThisnewInstituteholdsthatSacredArt shouldconformtotwoessentialrequisites:
(1)Itmustbegenuineartandthereforealiving andimmediateexpressionofourtimes.
