ButincertainareasoftheChurchofSilence,the persecutionwasmorepronounced.BehindtheIron Curtain,wheretheChurchhasmorethan52million adherents,CatholicsinEastGermanywereaprime targetoftheReds.

PersecutionInEastGermany

Priests,nunsandlaymenwerearrested;Catholic institutionswereclosedorstoppedinthemidstof beingconstructed;andEastGermanRedssteppedup theirprogrammeof"youthinitiation"rites.

TheChineseReds'mostpowerfulwedgeincleavingAmongsomeoftheincidentswerethefollowing: thefaithofCatholicsinChinaistheschismatic PatrioticAssociationofChineseCatholics.According tonewsreportsreceivedinHongKong,atleast32 Chinesepriestshavebeen"electedbishops,"andof theseatleast15areknowntohavebeenillicitly consecrated.

TheRedshave touseseveremethods ofphysicaltortureonthemostrecalcitrantpriests andfaithfulinChina,buttheirpresentintensified driveagainstreligionisconcentratedinthesphere ofpropaganda,andtheiravowedaimistoforceall CatholicstojointhePatrioticAssociationofChinese Catholics.

Repetitive,tiresomeindoctrinationcoursesare spearheadingtheReds'attemptstowinoverthe faithful.TheeffectthesecourseshaveontheparticipantsweredetailedinalettersenttoHongKong fromapriestinChina.

"Theseindoctrinationcoursesaredeadly,thereis noescape,"hewrote."Youcouldn'timaginehow rapid,rabidtalkerscanforceyoutothink,repeat, concede,admitandatlastgetyouontheirsideto prattlethesamemisleadingambigiousstatementsas theyspitout.Theyinsist,repeat,insistagainand againalwaysonthesamestatement-wearingusout, breakingusdown-untilunabletoholdoutany longeroneisfinallypreparedtosay'Well,haveit yourway.'"

TheseriousnessoftheCatholicsituationinChina isrevealedintheattentiongiventoitbythelate PopePiusXIIandhissuccessor,HisHolinessPope JohnXXIII.

PiusXIIissuedaspecialencyclical,"AdApostolorumPrincipis,"whichwassecretlycirculated amongthebishops,priestsandfaithfulofChina. TheencyclicalcondemnedthePatrioticAssociation ofChineseCatholicsasanorganisationwhichaims "atmakingCatholicsgraduallyembracetenetsof atheisticmaterialismbywhichGodHimselfisdenied andtheprinciplesofreligionrejected."

Theencyclicalalsostatedthatexcommunication isautomaticallyincurredbyanyonewhoisillicitly consecratedabishop.

Forty-OneYearsOfMilitantAtheism

Attherecentconsistoryinwhich23prelateswere madecardinals,PopeJohndeliveredanaddressthat dealtlargelywiththeplightofthepersecutedfaithful inChina.Hedeclaredthat"Catholicsthroughout thewholeofChinahavebeenlivingunderthemost difficultcircumstances,"andcalledonCatholic bishopsoftheworldtoprescribepublicactsof prayerandpenanceforthefaithfulofChina.

FourJesuitswerearrestedataretreathousenear Berlinandgaoled.

FatherJosephHugoHermes,acurateinBadKoesenintheSovietzone,wassentencedto16months inprisonforpossessing"Fascist"literatureand opposingRedyouthdedicationceremonies.

TwoCatholicchildren'shomesinEastGermany wereclosed,andtwonunswhoconductedoneof thehomesweregivensuspendedsentencesoftwo andthreemonths.

AnewdecreeoftheEastGermandepartmentof educationhasrestrictedStateschoolteachersfrom teachingreligion.

ElevenCatholiclaymen,fromtheindustrialcity ofRathenowwereconvictedof"espionage."

Anintensifiedprogrammewaslaunchedbythe

RedsforJugendweihe,services,initiationritesthat amounttoasecularconfirmationofEastGerman youthsbetweentheagesof10and14.BothCatholic andProtestantprelateshavevigorouslycondemned theseservices.

Twootherregionsoftheworldhavebeenunder severeRedprsecutioninthepastyear:northern VietnamandtheStateofKerala,India.

Accordingtorecentstatisticsonlyabout500,000of the1,500,000CatholicsinVietnamarenowlivingin theRed-dominatednorthofthecountry.Thecontinuedexpulsionofforeignmissionershasreduced theirnumberinnorthVietnamtoabouteight.One ofthelatestprelatestobeexpelledwasCoadjutor BishopAndreR.Jacq,O.P.,oftheApostolicVicariate ofLangsonandCaobang.

Thetribalceremony,anisland'slinguafranca-that originalsonganddancewasoriginallydevisedby production,hadnoreligious overtones,andwasthe natives'contributiontothe Government-sponsoredcelebrationofChristmas.

Itwassetapartfromthe religiousactivites ofChristmasbybeingheld onNewYear'sDay.

Likechildreneverywhere theyoungstershereputin longhoursofpracticefor thesongsandhymnsthey sangtonotethebirthdayof Christ.

IfyouhappenedtobeintheneighbourhoodoftheYankeeStadiumorthePolo GroundsinNewYorkCityabouttheendofJulyorthebeginningofAugustlastyear, youmusthaveseenthembythethousands.Onfoot,bycar,busandcharteredboats andplanes,nearly200,000Jehovah'sWitnessespouredintoBagdad-on-the-Subwayfor theirannualDivineWillInternationalAssembly.

Ineveryway,thisforegatheringwasanastonishing thing.Completewithrusticbridges,artificiallyflowingstreamsofwater,banksofflowersandelaborately arrangedplatforming,YankeeStadiumhadallthe illusorybeautyandimpressivesolemnitythatmoney andhardworkcanproduce.

Acorpsof6,000volunteersmaintainedorderatthe YankeeStadiumduringtheprogrammes,where70,000 Witnessesfilledthegrandstand;22,000occupiedchairs setupnthegroundswhile25,000morejustpressed aroundthedoorsofthepark,contenttogetwithin eyeshotoftheholyspotandlistentospeechesbroadcastoverthepublicaddresssystem.AtthePolo Groundstherewasmoreofthesame,with53,000in regularseatsandanother10,000roughingitoncamp chairs.

Thespeechesdidmorethanalltheabove-mentionedefficiencytorevealthetruecharacterofthis bizarreandsemi-religiouscult.CriedMr.Nathan Knorr,itsPresident:"Civilisationstandsnowatthe thresholdofapeaceable,happyandlife-givingnew world.Thisisthegrandestofnews,althoughit meansthatwearelivingattheendofthisworryfilled,problem-racked,insane,lovelessoldworld.We wantthenew.Weareeagertoleavetheold."

Theendoftheworld,itseems,isuponus.Itwill bebroughtabout,notbytheH-Bomb,butbythe BattleofArmageddon,tobefoughtbetweengoodand evil,withonlythemembersoftheWatchTowerBible andTractSociety(officialmonikeroftheWitnesses) benefittingtherefrom.

Indeed,onlyaselectnumberofthesewillreapthe finestfruitsofthisawesomeconflict,forjust144,000 ofthepresent700,000enrolmentwillgouptoheaven. Theremainderwillhavetosettleforakindofearthly heaven.

Theworld'spresenttroublesaretobetracedtothe doorstepsofeveryreligionexcepttheirown,the delegatesweredulyinformed.Mostoftheblame belongstotheProtestantandCatholicclergymen, forthesehavesupportedtheLeagueofNationsand theU.N.andtherebyturnedtheirpeoplefromGod.

"Thisteachingofthereligiousclergyisfalse,"proclaimedMr.Knorr."Ithasservedtheclergywellas anexcuseformeddlinginthepoliticsofthisworld. AnyattempttoestablishthekingdomofGodby meansofthepoliticiansofthisworldmustfail." HefoundnothingwrongwiththeCommunists,however. TheChristianclergy,Knorrknows,"havemade politiciansintoChrists."Justwhen,whereandhow

thishasbeenmanaged,hedoesnotexplain.Having violentlyattackedallreligiousaffiliationsasantiJehovah,theleadersdescribedthemselvesas"genuine Christiansandrealdisciples.""Othersmayclaimto beChristians,"saidtheconventionchairman,"but actionsspeaklouderthanwords.Herewehavetrue Christianlove."

Oneofthemostdramaticaspectsoftherecent meetingwasabaptismenmasseof7,136members. TheritelastedtwoandahalfhoursatOrchardBeach intheBronx,anditwentoffwithalltheprecision ofacrackdrillteamfromthelocalGuardsmen.The methodusedwastotalimmersionofthebaptised,and theresultwasthateveryWitnessbecameafullfledged"minister."

Newspaperaccountsreportedthatthemenwore trunksandthewomen,forthemostpart,form-fitting bathingsuits.Asthecandidatesreachedthedeeper water,eachwasgraspedaboutthechestbyabaptiser therewaiting,dippedbackwardsquickly,untilentirelyimmersed,liftedupandthenroutedbackto theland.Organiserswerepleasedtoannouncethat thiswasthelargestgroupbaptismsince33A.D. Whatisthehistoryofthisorganisation?Howdoes itoperate?Whoareitsleaders?Doesitposeany threats?

ThemovementwasfoundedbyCharlesT.Russell of.Allegheny,Penna.,aformerclothingsalesman,in 1872.Hecommencedbygatheringtogetherafew relativesandfriendsforBiblestudy,havingbecome dissatisfiedwiththeCongregationalistdoctrineshe knewasaboy.

By1890theywereorganisedinto"theRussellites" andweredistributingamagazinesinceknownas "TheWatchtower."Russellwasaprolificwriter,and withtheaidofdedicatedfollowershisbooksold,the groupprosperedandtheyfinallymovedtoBrooklyn in1909.

Russelldiedin1916.Hiswifedivorcedhimonthe gioundsofadultery,andhislifestorywouldmake fascinatingreadingforanyoneinterestedinreligious eccentrics.Amongotherthings,heoncesold"miracle wheat"at60dollarsabushel,guaranteedtoripenin thefieldsofthecomingKingdom.Heclaimedtobe abletoexplaintheBiblefromGreektexts,buta courtprovedthathedidn'tknowalphafromalfalfa oromegafromaneggomelet.

Russellwassucceededby"Judge"Rutherfordwho changedthenamefromRussellitestoJehovah'sWitnesses.MembershipcontinuedtoburgeonuntilWorld WarIIwhenthecultranintodifficultieswiththe Government'sdraft,sinceallitsmembersclaimed e'.emptionasministers.

whopaysuchatribute, theysay,adoretheState itstandsforandthereby expressabeliefthateternalsalvationisthrough men'sgovernment.The U.S.SupremeCourthas upheldthelegalrightof theWitnessesinthis.

Manyothersectsinthe pasthavepredictedthe imminentdestructionof theworldandthecoming ofChristinjudgment: theMennonitesandthe Adventurists,forexample. Catholicsbelieve,of course,thattheworldwill onedayendandthat ChristwillcomeasJudge.

ButtheChurchdoesnotteachwhenthis willhappenorexactlyhow.Wearecontentwith whatChristhassaid:"Nomanknowsthedaynorthe hour ."

Jehovah'sWitnessesmaintain,indeedthatChrist hasalreadycome.Hearrivedin1914tocommence a"MillenialReign"until2914,butdecidedtoremain invisibleforawhile;thevisibleappearanceisjust aroundthecorner.

IfyouaskifthisChrististhesameasHeofwhom weCatholicsspeak,thereplyisanemphatic"No!" ThereisnoTrinityintheir-tousethewordloosely --doctrine.HenceChristcan'tbetheSonofGod. He'sratherMichaeltheArchangelwhowillinsome waybechangedintoGodwhenthetimecomes.

Hisvisitswerean exampleofthepastoral practicethathehadrecommendedonlyafewdays earliertothepriestsof Romewhomhehadreceivedinaudience.

attheApostolicPalaceall theboys-mostofthem orphans-fromVillaNazareth,foundedanddirected byFatherCarloGnocchi, whowilledhiseyestoblind youthsbeforehediedof cancerin1956.

Christmasbeganforthe HolyFatherwiththecelebrationofMassinthe PaulinechapelinthepresenceofVaticanprelates andthediplomaticcorps. TheMass,withChristmas musicsungbythePauline chapelchoir,wastransmittedbyradioandtelevisionthroughoutItaly.

ThePope'ssecond ChristmasMasswascelebratedprivatelyimmediatelyafterwards.

At11a.m.thePontiff wenttoSt.Peter'sliasilica toofferhisthirdChristmas MacsatthehighaltarcalledtheAltaroftheConfession-forthegeneral public.

NewsofthePope'svisit totheprisonhadbrought crowdsofpeoplefromthe cityandoutlyingareasto awaithisarrivalat8a.m. Somehadtoriseinthe middleofthenighttoarrive onthesceneintime.

Bythetimehearrived, accompaniedbypapal MaestrodiCamera,Mgr. MarioNasalliRocca,and byhisprivatesecretary, Mgr.LorisCapovilla,a largecrowdhadgathered.

Waitingtowelcomethe PopewereItalianMinister ofJusticeGuidoGonella andErnestoEula,president ofItaly'sSupremeCourt. ThePopewasfirstledto thecommunityroomofthe prisonguardswherea thronehadbeenerected forhim.

Here,inthepresenceof manycivicauthorities, magistratesandprison officials,Mr.Gonellaread anaddressinwhichheconveyedtothePopetherespectsoftheItalianGovernmentandthetributesof themagistrates.ThePontiffwasthenaccompaniedtotheprison rotundawheretheprisoners

andguardshadworkedalmosttheentirenighttogive itanatmosphereofwelcome.

Theyhaderectedanaltar inthecentre,witha Christmascribtooneside. Onthefirstofthefourgalleriesencirclingtherotunda hadbeenerectedastatue ofOurLadyandontheoppositesideacrucifix.

WhilethePopekneltata priedieu,BishopFrancesco PieriofOrvieto,inspector ofprisonchaplains,impartedBenedictionofthe BlessedSacrament.

Achoirof18prisoners sangBenedictionhymnsand Christmassongs.Thereligiousfunctionwasconcludedwiththeprisoners recitingthe"ReginaCoeli Prisoner'sPrayer."

ThePopethentoldthe prisonershowasanaya deepimpressionhadbeen madeonhimwhenoneof hisrelativeswas"sentup foramonth"becausehe hadbeencaughthunting withoutalicence.

Hespokeofrespectfor justlawsandacceptanceof theirsanctions.Hetheninvitedtheprisonerstoobservethe14worksofmercy "whichhelptomakelife sweetandserene."

ThePopethenspokeof incensewhich,"whenit comesintocontactwithfire, istransformedfromaraw materialintoanexpression ofprayer,asy:nbolofoblationandadorationof God."ThePontiffcontinued:

"Therefore,mayyoualso be,likeincense,aninstrumentofdedicationtothe Lord."

WhenthePopefinished andimpartedhisblessing hewaspresentedwitha missalboundintheprison bookbinderyinwhittleatherandbearingthefollowingdedicationstampedin gold:"FromthePrisoners ofReginaCoeli,totheGood PastorJohnXXIII."Hewas alsopresentedwithanoil paintingofhimselfinpontificalrobesandtiaradone byoneoftheprisoners.
