Oslo,Norway,Dec.10.-Stylinghimself an"unknownworkerinanunknownactivity attheserviceofuntoldsuffering,"Father DominiquePire,0.P.,acceptedthe1958 NobelPeacePrizewith"profoundjoy"and pledgedtherestofhislifetotheserviceof mankind.

TheBelgianDominicanfriar,honouredforhiswork onbehalfofrefugees,receivedtheawardinaspecial ceremonyintheauditoriumofOsloUniversity.Norway'sKingOlavandPrincessAstridwereinthe audience.

GunnarJahn,presidentofNobelPeacePrizecorntittee,madethepresentationandpraisedFatherPire's refugeeresettlemntmovement,called"Europeof Love.".

ThepriesthadreceivedthecashawardaccompanyingthePeacePrize,acheckfor£20,000,theprevious dayinaceremonyattheNobelInstitutebuilding hereinOslo.Hehadannouncedearlierthathewill usehalfofthemoneyforhisnext"EuropeanVillage" tobebuiltinNorwayandnamedinhonourofAnn Frank,andtheotherhalfforthevillagenearBrusselswhichhehasnamedFridtjofNansen,Norwegian explorerandhumanitarianwhoreceivedthe1922 NobelPeacePrizeforhisworkforrefugeesafter WorldWarI.

AlludingtothefactthatheisthefirstCatholic priesttoreceivetheaward,andoneofonlyfivemen under50yearsoldtobesohonoured,FatherPire toldtheawardcommittee:

Fiveyearslater,throughtheeffortsofFather.Pire, 200refugeeshadbeentakeninbyBelgianfamilies, 7,000refugeefamilieswereindirectcontactwith BelgianandFrenchpeople,while20,000personsfrom thesetwocountriesspontaneouslysupportedhis "fosterfather"activityofkeepingintouchwith refugeeslivingincamps.

"PiretheGood"ishowFatherPireisknowamong refugeesthroughoutEurope.Whenaskedtodefine whatarefugeeis,FatherPiresaid,"Idon'tcallthem 1,yanynameatail,Ihavenospecialwordforthem, Ijustlovethem."

TheSpanishpiazza,fromwhichthepiazzatakes itsname,wasfestoonedwithblazingtorchesand papalandSpanishbanners. Embassypersonnel lookedonfromabalconyoverlookingthesquarethewomenwearingtheirnativehighcombsand blackmantillas.

TheofficebuildingoftheSacredCongregationfor thePropagationoftheFaith,whichalsofacesthe piazza,waslikewisedrapedwithpapalcolours.

ItwasChiristmas.Snowflakesweregently settlingonthewindowsandroofsofevery houseandthestreetsappearedtobesilvery ribbons,occasionallydisturbedbypassersby,ontheirwaytoapartyorvhitingfriends andrelatives.

Gboylaughterandsweet voicessingingcarols,were heardandtheChristmasatmospherewaseverywhere.

However,oneman,Dr. Grant,wasunmovedbythis Christmashappiness,forhe wassourlyharnessinghis horse.Hefixedhissleigh ontothestrapsandsetoff onasickcall.

"Ofallthenightstoget sick,"hemutteredfuriously."Inthecountryside, too.WhyeverdidIbecome adoctor?"

Sincehisbelovedwife haddiedandhissmall daughterwasreportedlost atsea,whilereturningfrom schoolabroad,DoctorGrant, whohadpreviouslybeen extremelypopularamong thetownsfolk,disappeared fromsociety.Butbecause hewastheonlydoctorwithinmiles,thepeoplewere compelledtoaskhisassistance. Ashishorseplodded alongandhissleighjingled.DoctorGrantrecalled thelastChristmashisfamily hadcelebratedtogether.He rememberedhoweagerhis littledaughter,Janie,was tohelpwiththedecorations whilehiswifearrangedthe Christmastreeandwhenall wassaidanddone,thethree ofthemkneltinfrontof theirlittlecribandprayed together.Oh,howjolly down. werethosedays,howmuch

Hewassuddenlyjolted backtorealisationwhenthe sleighwentoveralog, whichhadbeencovered withsnow.However,there wasnoaccidentandsohe continuedonhisjourney.

EventuallyDoctorGrant Arrivedathisdestination. Alightingfromthesleigh, hewentupthesteps,then knockedonthedoor.A frailoldladywelcomedhim in,thenworriedlyshowed himintoaroomwherea childabout12yearsoldlay tossingfeverishly.

Takingouthisinstruments,thesurgeonwalked overtothebed.Whenhe perceivedthegirl'sface,he gaveastartledcry.

"Itcan'tbe,"hegasped unbelievingly.

"Whatisit,Doctor?What isthematter?"

Slightlyrecovering,the doctortoldtheoldlady abouthislittledaughter whowaslostatseaand andhowmuchthischild resembledhisowndear daughter.

Boy'sKindAct BringsReward

Manyyearsagoinasmall towninGermany,asmall boylivedwithhisauntyin verypoorcircumstances. Thisboy'sAuntywasrather oldandgrumpyandoften heusedtobetreatedcruelly. However,Christmaswas drawingnearandalthough manyofhisfriendswere talkingaboutthegifts whichtheyhadaskedfor,thisboyknewthathewould begettingnothingatall, fortheywerefartoopoor toafford Christmaspresents. Evedrewnear anditwassnowingheavily. Theyoungboyputonhis woodenshoesandfastened uphisthincoatandcommencedhisjourneytothe churchtohearMidnight Mass.

Onhisarrivalatthelittle chapelhesawagroupof boysdressedwarmly,discussingwhattheywerereceivingforChristmas.

SoonMasscommenced anditwasaverysolemn occasion,remindingthe congregationofthefirst NativityoftheChristChild Masswasfinishedandthe smallboystrolledslowly homeenvyingtherichboys whowereaheadchattering inacrowd.

Onreachinghomehedid notreceiveaverywelcomingreception,forhisAunt wasfuriouswithhimand shethrashedhimseverely.

Hewentsobbingtobed andsoonfellasleep.On wakinginthemorninghis roomwasfullofvaluable presents,eachverygreatly neededbyhisAuntand himself.JustashewasrunningtotellhisAuntavoice whispered:"Whateveryou havedoneuntotheleastof these,soalsohaveyoudone untoMe."
