OnNov.2,HisLordship,theMostRev. OttoRaible,S.C.A.,VicarApostolicofKimberley,wasgivenasend-offbytheparishionersofOurLadyofPeaceparish,Broome, onhisrecentretirement.

TheweekpreviouslyheexperienceswiththeBishop hadbeenfarewelledbythe peopelofBeagleBayMission,hishomesince1941.

OnNovember2aspiritual send-offwasgiveninthe formofgeneralCommunion intheparish.

Averylargenumberof parishionersattendedMass andreceivedHolyCommuniononthatday.Inhisfinal sermontheBishopsaidhe couldhavespokenofmany thingsbutafterhaving consideredall,hechosethe onehethoughtbest,namely "GratitudetoGodforeverythingHehadsenthimduringhis30yearsinthe North,joysandsorrowsincluded."

Thateveningahuge crowdcametotheparish schoolwhichhadbeenvery nicelydecoratedandreparedbytheSistersand 'ladiesoftheparish.

Vocalitemswererenderedbytheconventschool choirandtheyoungmen oftheparish,Mr.JoeRoche representing Lombadina missionandtheladieswho sangsongstheyhadlearnt atBeagleBaymissionin theiryouth.

Fr.McKelsonthankedthe Bishoponbehalfofthe parishionersforallhehad doneintheparishduring hisstayintheKimberleys andremindedthepeople thattheBishop'sprimeinteresthadalwaysbeenthe salvationofsouls.

Fr.Huegel,superiorof BeagleBayMission,recalledhislongassociationwith theBishopandmentioned thatonlyGodcouldknow thefullstoryofthose30 years.

DuringtheweekhisLordshipwenttoDerbyfora farewellthereandonNovember7,afterhisreturnto Broome,wasgivenacivic send-offbythechairmanof theRoadBoard(Mr.A.S. Male),membersofthe Boardandprominentcitizens.

Speechesweremadeby Mr.MaleandMr.D.Farrell andapresentationwasmade onbehalfofthecitizens.

TheBishopsaidthathe hadenjoyedeveryminute ofhisstayintheNorthbecauseithadbenhisvocation.Heencouragedthe businesspeopleinthetown toseethehandofGodin thecrisisthepearlingindustrywasundergoingatthe momentandtoldthemto hopeforbettertimesand possiblylookforotheravenuesofbusinesswhich wouldensurethecontinued prosnerityofthetown.

AfterwardstheBishop andhispartywereentertheBoardandtheevening closedwiththeBishopplayingthenationalanthemon thepianoandthesinging ofAuldLangSynebyall present.

TheretirementofBishop Raiblebringstoaclosea periodofasustainedapostolateof30yearsunder tryingconditionsamongthe peopleoftheNorth.

Thisisthesituationclosetoacenturyafterthe 'andingofthefirstmissionariesofmoderntimes inJapan,wherelessthanonepercent.ofthe nation'smorethan90millionpeopleareChristians.

Accordingtothelateststatistics,JapaneseChristianstotalonlyabout670,000.Theseinclude 332,135Protestants,245,114Catholics-morethan doublethe1948total-34,391Orthodoxandanestimated50,000membersoftheso-calledNo-Church Christianity,whichhaswideinfluenceinintellectual circles.

SomeoftheproblemsfacingmissionariesinpresentdayJapan,aswellassomeoftheopportunities, wererevealedbythenation-widesurvey,madeby theCommitteeoftheApostolate,setupbythe JapaneseHierarchytostudymethodsofevangelising.

AmongthoseinterviewedtheChurchappeared "forbidding"to9.9percent.becauseofitsdoctrine andto15.7percent.becauseofitscommandments. Itwasconsideredprimarilyaforeignreligionby16 percent.

However,28.2percent.ofthoseinterviewedsince thesurveystartedin1956expressedsinceresympathyfortheChurch.

Thereport,drawnupbythecommittee'schairman,FatherJosephSpae,notedthatthefollowing answersweregiventothequestions:"DoyoubelieveintheexistenceofGod?"Godexists,33.7per cent.;Goddoesnotexist,15.1percent.;Godperhaps exists,27.2percent.;don'tknow,20.3percent.;not reported,3.7percent.

TheattitudeoftheaverageJapaneseregardingthe natureandpurposeofreligionwasalsorevealed bythesurvey.FatherSpaewrote:

Thepress,advertisements, pictures,clothes,formapatternofliving,hallmarkthe daysahead.Theraceisto thestrong.

Soonthissubjectof modesty,thatseemstoloom largeonthedailyhorizons oftherisinggeneration,it's uptomothersandfathersto think,decidewhatthey wanttofeelanddoabout it,andthentakeconcerted actionintheirhomes,and inmouldingpublicopinion.

Thetopfigure,ontheleft,is3,700yearsold.Itwasdiscovered intheruinsoftheMinoancivilisationonCrete.

Beneaththatisafigureofananimal,almostmoderninits design.ThiscamefromMycenae,thecityfromwhichHomer's chieftainshadsetouttowinbackthelovelyHelenofTroy.One ofthemostchoicepiecesofpotterylefttousfromantiquityis thefamousbluehippopotamus4,000yearsold.Itwasfoundin Egyptanditsbakedturquoiseglazeisstillbright,stillclear.The LionpanelisfromProcessionStreetinBabylon,builtbyKing Nebuchadnezzar-605-562B.C.Amagnificentpieceofartistry, inbothdesignandcolour.

AtthebottomisthefineEtruscanwarrior,eightfeethighfrom thecrestofhishelmettothesolesofhisshoes.Heisgorgeous withcolour.Theterracottaofwhichheismadeiscoveredwith agleamingcoatingofbrownishblack.Thearmourisred,the undervestandthewhitesoftheeyesarewhite,andthedecorative motifsarewhite,redandblack.Theleftarmboreashield.The righthandprobablyheldasword,itsbladepointingbackward.
