KimberleyFarewellsBishop RaibleAfter'30YearsInNorth

OnNov.2,HisLordship,theMostRev. OttoRaible,S.C.A.,VicarApostolicofKimberley,wasgivenasend-offbytheparishionersofOurLadyofPeaceparish,Broome, onhisrecentretirement.

TheweekpreviouslyheexperienceswiththeBishop hadbeenfarewelledbythe peopelofBeagleBayMission,hishomesince1941.

OnNovember2aspiritual send-offwasgiveninthe formofgeneralCommunion intheparish.

Averylargenumberof parishionersattendedMass andreceivedHolyCommuniononthatday.Inhisfinal sermontheBishopsaidhe couldhavespokenofmany thingsbutafterhaving consideredall,hechosethe onehethoughtbest,namely "GratitudetoGodforeverythingHehadsenthimduringhis30yearsinthe North,joysandsorrowsincluded."

Thateveningahuge crowdcametotheparish schoolwhichhadbeenvery nicelydecoratedandreparedbytheSistersand 'ladiesoftheparish.

Vocalitemswererenderedbytheconventschool choirandtheyoungmen oftheparish,Mr.JoeRoche representing Lombadina missionandtheladieswho sangsongstheyhadlearnt atBeagleBaymissionin theiryouth.

Fr.McKelsonthankedthe Bishoponbehalfofthe parishionersforallhehad doneintheparishduring hisstayintheKimberleys andremindedthepeople thattheBishop'sprimeinteresthadalwaysbeenthe salvationofsouls.

Fr.Huegel,superiorof BeagleBayMission,recalledhislongassociationwith theBishopandmentioned thatonlyGodcouldknow thefullstoryofthose30 years.

TheBishopsaidthathe hadenjoyedeveryminute ofhisstayintheNorthbecauseithadbenhisvocation.Heencouragedthe businesspeopleinthetown toseethehandofGodin thecrisisthepearlingindustrywasundergoingatthe momentandtoldthemto hopeforbettertimesand possiblylookforotheravenuesofbusinesswhich wouldensurethecontinued prosnerityofthetown.

TheSistersofSt.Johnof GodtookovertheLeprosariumandNativeHospital atDerbyandanewschool builtatBroome.Thelong establishedmissionat BeagleBayhasbeenimprovedoutofsightbythe additionofnewbuildings andinstallations.

WhatA.L.P.propagandahasgivenoftheviewsof theCardinalistrue,evenplatitudinously,sofaras itgoes.Butitdoesn'tgoveryfar.Itignores,for instance,thedecreeoftheCongregationoftheHoly OfficeofJuly1,1949,whichdealswiththosewho directlyorindirectlyhelpCommunismwithout,however,professingthematerialistandanti-Christian doctrinewhichitinvolves.

InadditiontheCardinalspecificallystatedthatno Partyshould"seektheChurch'ssupport."Yetthat ispreciselywhattheLabourPartyisdoing-andthat withthemostunworthymotives.Surelyitisiron,cal thatwhenHisEminencewasproclaimedin1946,his mostbitteropponentwasMr.ArthurCalwell,then aMinisteroftheCrownandnowDeputyLeaderof theOpposition.AlthoughaprofessingCatholicMr. CalwellpubliclycriticisedtheVatican'sappointment andmadederogatoryremarksconcerningHisEminence.Thissamegentlemanhasnotchangedhis spots.Withinthepastweekhewasdescribedby AuxiliaryBishopFoxofMelbourneasamisguided CatholicpoliticianontheissueofCommunism.

Itisnotmerelyamatterofwhethertheelectors shouldbenaiveenoughtoacceptelectionpromises attheirfacevaluebutastowhethertheswitchto broadpromisesonthefamilyplaneisnottoosudden andradicalagainstthepro-Communistpre-occupationsoftheA.L.P.duringthepastthreeyears.From recognisingRedChinatorecognisingtheAustralian family,fromunityticketstoincreasedpensions,from indemnitypaymentstogreaterchildendowmentallthisistoogreatareversalofformtobequite genuine.AndthefinalproofthatEvattinhisdesperationwillpromiseanythingistobehadinhismealymouthedwooingofD.L.P.preferencesandtheCatholicvote.

Thisisthesituationclosetoacenturyafterthe 'andingofthefirstmissionariesofmoderntimes inJapan,wherelessthanonepercent.ofthe nation'smorethan90millionpeopleareChristians.

Accordingtothelateststatistics,JapaneseChristianstotalonlyabout670,000.Theseinclude 332,135Protestants,245,114Catholics-morethan doublethe1948total-34,391Orthodoxandanestimated50,000membersoftheso-calledNo-Church Christianity,whichhaswideinfluenceinintellectual circles.
