From1905until1914,hewasprivatesecretaryto BishopRadini-TedeschiofBergamo.Inadditionhe wasprofessorofchurchhistory,apologetics.andlater

patrologyathisalmamater,theBergamoseminary. DuringWorldWarI,hewasfirstasergeantwith theMedicalCorpsoftheItalianarmyandafterayear hebecamechaplainatmilitaryhospitals.Inaddition hehelpedtoprovidespiritualcomfortstotheCivil DefenceCorps.

Afterthewarheorganisedthefirst"Student's House"inItalyatBergamo.Thisinstitutionprovided freeassistancetothechildrenofthemiddleclass attendingpublicschools.

Healsowasinstrumentalintheestablishmentof thefirstschoolofreligionattheBergamoTeachers' College,oftheculturalconferencesintheUniversity

HewasnamedApostolicVisitortoBulgariain1925. OnMarch19ofthatyearhewasconsecratedArchbishopofAreopolis.HecontinuedasApostolicVisitortoBulgariauntil1930whenhewasnamedApostolicDelegatetothatcountry.

In1935ArchbishopRoncalliwastransferredtothe TitularArchbishopricofMesembriaandwasnamed ApostolicDelegatetoTurkeyandGreece.Hewas alsoappointedApostolicAdministratoroftheLatin VicariateApostolicofConstantinople.Heremained thereduringtheyearsofWorldWarII.

NeartheendofWorldWarII,inDecember,1944, ArchbishopRoncalliwasnamedApostolicNuncioto France.Duringtheimmediatepost-waryears,ArchbishopRoncalli'sabilitiesasadiplomatwonhimthe respectofthemostdiversepoliticalpartiesandthe nationasawhole.Afterhewasnamedacardinal, hereceivedhisredbirettafromFrenchPresident VincentAuriol,continuingatraditionoffourcenturies.

Hiswritingsincludetwohistoricalstudiesaboutthe BergamoSeminary-oneonitsestablishmentand thesecondontheApostolicVisitationbySt.Charles Borromeo.HehasalsowrittenmonographsonCesare CardinalBaronioandBishopRadini-Tedeschi.

In1956CardinalRoncalliissuedapastoralletter warningtheclergyandfaithfuloftheVenicepatriarchateagainsttheso-called"openingtotheleft," atermusedtodescribeclosercollaborationbetween Catholic-orientedpoliticalpartiesandCommunist andalliedparties.

HecriticisedaserroneoustheattitudeofCatholics who,inthepolitiAlfield,desirecompletefreedom fromepiscopalauthority,saying:

Heobtainedemployment withtheW.A.Government Railways,and,fouryears latermadetheacquaintance ofapettyIrishlassfrom Co.Kerry,whowasleavingtheemigrantshipat Fremantle,andtwoyears later,in1903,theyoung caupleweremarriedinSt. Mary'sCathedral,Perth.the Rev.Father(Dean)Smythe officiating.

Thecouplemovedto BrunswickJunction in 1912,andin1928cameto Armadale.Ofthemarriage therearethreesonsandone daughter.

DesignedbyMr.A.O'Hara,architect,and builtbyMessrs.BerryBros.,thenewsanctuaryofSt.Brigid'sChurch,WestPerth, harmoniseswiththeEnglishmediaevalstyle oftheexistingbuilding,erectedin1905.

Thenewsanctuaryhasbeengivenevenmoresize andaddedemphasisbybringingtheCommunionrails outintothebodyofthechurchandmorethandoublingtheiroriginalsize.Therailshavebeenexecuted inheavywroughtiron,paintedblack,andsurmounted withapolishedjarrahtop.

Thesanctuaryfloorisofpolishedwhiteterrazzo withfineblackchipsrelievedonlywiththetraditional redcarpetstrips.

Adominantfeatureofthewestwallofthesanctuaryisthethreelargestained-glasswindowsina simpleecclesiasticalpattern.Duringtheafternoon servicetheywillthrowacolourfulpatternoflight onthefloorandwalls.

Thefocalpointofthesanctuaryisthenewaltar, builtofwhitecarraramarble,delicatelycarvedand withyellowsiennapanelsThealtarissetonapredella,threestepsabovethesanctuaryfloorlevel.

Thepulpitwastakenfromitsoldpositioninthe bodyofthechurch,modifiedandrefittedmoreconvenientlyinthesanctuary.

TheSacredHeartshrinehasbeenremodelledand anewlargesidechapelbuilttohonourOurLady.

Theworkalsoincorporatesapriests'sacristy,boys' sacristy,andalargeworksacristy,alladequately furnishedtohousethenumerousvestmentsanditems ofChurchfurniture.

Externallythebuildingisfinishedinredpressed bricksandgreycementdressings,androofedwith greyterracottatilestomatchtheoldslateroof.

Apublicaddresssystemhasbeeninstalledthroughoutwithmicrophonepositionsatbothaltarandpulpit, withfacilitiesforrelayingtothechurchgroundsif necessary.

Theoriginalbuildingwasaschool-churcherected in1888inwhichBishopGibneyhadcelebratedthe firstMass.ThenthelateMonsignorBurke,upon beingappointedfirstparishpriestofthearea,had builttheexistingChurchofSt.Brigidin1905ata costof£5,000.

Avarietyofreasonspreventedthecompletionof thesanctuaryfor53years.Therounding-outofthe churchundertheRt.Rev.Mgr.Sullivan,wasin accordwiththeoriginalplans.
