Thesharpincreaseinthegularintervalsbeforeany numberofpossiblemir-definitepronouncementis aclesduringthecentennialmadetoreligiousauthoriyearoftheBlessedVirgin'sties. apparitionsinthismountainHundredsofclaimsof townwasmadeknownby"miraculouscures"are Dr.Pelissier,headofthemadeeachyear,butonly medicalbureau.

Thecongress,thefirstof itskindinLourdes,was presidedoverbyDr.Luigi Gedda,directoroftheInstituteofMedicalGenetics inRomeandheadofItalianCatholicAction.

Themeetingwhichstartedjustpriortothemortal illnessofPopePiusXII, wasopenedwiththereadingbyProfessorGeddaof thespecialdoctors'prayer composedbythePope.

Thisprayer,madepublic inMay,1957,asksforphy-siciansthegracetobe"kind inforecastingthemysteryofpainanddeath,"and closes:"Maywe,bya Christianwayoflifeand theforthrightexerciseof ourprofession,onedaydeservetohearfromThylips thebeatifyingsentence promisedtothosewhovisitedTheeinthepersonof theirbrothers:'Come,blessedofMyFather,takepos- sessionofthekingdompre- paredforyou'."

BishopPierreMarie TheasofTarbesandLourdeswelcomedthedelegates to theLourdesandexpressed hopethatthisMarian citywillbethesiteofmany subsequentmedicalcongresses.

Hetookpartinsomeof thediscussionsduringthe meeting,andtooktheopportunitytoremindthe physiciansofsomeoftheir professionalobligationsas Christians.

Apreponderanceofthe doctorstakingpartinthe meetingcamefromFrance, SpainandItaly.Dr.Pelissier,inmakingknownthe doublingofthenumberof curesthat vestigated,areusuallyinalsosaidthat thenumberofphysicians whohavestudiedthework oftheLourdesmedical ,bureau,orparticipatedin thatwork,hasalsoincreasedWhileabouttwofoldthisyear. normallyfrom1,200 to1,500doctorsfromall overtheworldcometothe medicalbureau,hesaid,therehavebeen2,700thus farthisyear.

ThebureauisMadeupof medicalexpertsfromseveralcountries,manyof themnon-Catholic,who examinesickpilgrimswho cometoLourdes,andkeep recordsoftheirphysical condition.

Thefamilycircleremainedunbrokenuntil21-years agowhentheeldestson, PhilipClement,died.

Mrs.Kearneywasgrandmotherto23grandchildren andsevengreat-grandchildren.Shewascalled ontoenduremuchsuffering,butsheborehertrial withgreatpatience.

ThereasonwhyKokoda issoimportanttousisthat itwasthefirstmajorcampaigninwhichtheAustra_ liantroopsweresentinto actionunderordersfroman AustralianWarCabinet, withAustraliancommandersandAustralianlinesof communication.Ourtroops hadpreviouslyfoughtundertheirownofficers,but aspartofaBritishcommandandwiththesupplies organisedbytheBritish WarOffice.

Thestoryofhowthey foughtinNewGuineanot onlytheJapaneseinvaders butalsomalaria,dengue fever,andthehardshipsof atropicalclimate,willrank, deservedly,amongtheepics ofourfightingmen.

Iwonder,however,what historywillrecordofthe incompetencethatmarked theconductofthecampaign sofarasthearmchairstrategislsofCanberraarecon_ cerned.

Attheuniversity,justas heacquiresknowledgeof physicalscience,medicine, chemistry,enginering,law, oranyothersubjectnecessaryforhisfuturecareer, soalso,ifhestudiesmoral philosophyheacquiresa knowledgeofwhatdifferent philosophershavetosayaboutmorals,andofthe philosophicalreasonsforor againsttheirtheoriesasexpoundedbyhisprofessor.

Hewillacquiresufficient knowledgeofthesethingstopasshisexaminationinthe subject;andhewillderive acertainamountoftraining intellectuallybysuchexercisesinlogic.

Thenewsanctuaryhasbeengivenevenmoresize andaddedemphasisbybringingtheCommunionrails outintothebodyofthechurchandmorethandoublingtheiroriginalsize.Therailshavebeenexecuted inheavywroughtiron,paintedblack,andsurmounted withapolishedjarrahtop.

Thesanctuaryfloorisofpolishedwhiteterrazzo withfineblackchipsrelievedonlywiththetraditional redcarpetstrips.

Adominantfeatureofthewestwallofthesanctuaryisthethreelargestained-glasswindowsina simpleecclesiasticalpattern.Duringtheafternoon servicetheywillthrowacolourfulpatternoflight onthefloorandwalls.

Thefocalpointofthesanctuaryisthenewaltar, builtofwhitecarraramarble,delicatelycarvedand withyellowsiennapanelsThealtarissetonapredella,threestepsabovethesanctuaryfloorlevel.

Externallythebuildingisfinishedinredpressed bricksandgreycementdressings,androofedwith greyterracottatilestomatchtheoldslateroof.
