MeteoricRiseToArchbishopric

Onablusterydayin1933-October22-ascene,unusualandmagnificent,was Cathedral,Perth,completedinitseasterlyaspectonlythreeyearspreviously.Anew Rev.P.Bernardini,wasimportingthefulnessofthepriesthoodtoonewhowastobe time.TheArchbishopofHobart-Dr.Hayden-andtheCoadjutorArchbishopof inthesolemnrites.

Inthesanctuary,agedandailing,thevenerable ArchbishopofPerth,watchedthesacredliturgywith visibleemotion.TheHolySeehadansweredhispeti- tionforassistancebytheappointmentofFatherRed- mondPrendivilletobehisCoadjatorArchbishipwith therighttosuccession.

Itwasaremarkablechoice,forthenewArchbishop hadbeenordainedonlyeightyears,forthelastfive ofwhichhehadbeenAdministratoroftheCathedral.

Theyhadbeenonerousyears,fortheagedArch- bishopwasinprogressivephysicaldeclineandleaned heavilyonhisyoungadministrator.AndFr.Prendi- villehadprovedmorethanequaltothetask,forhe combinedgoodscholasticqualificationswithanotable charmofmannerandexceptionalorganisingability.Moreover,hisall-roundathleticprowess(whichhad earnedhisanAll-Irelandfootballcap)stoodhimin goodstead.Hewouldneedbroadshouldersaswell aszeal,abilityandthecapacityforwork.

BornofcountrystockatCastleisland,Co.Kerry, Irelandin1900,RedmondPrendivillebeganhisedu- cationatthelocalNationalSchool.Aspiringtothe priesthood,heenteredtheminorseminaryofSt. Brendan,Killarney,wherehecompletedtheHigh Schoolcourse

InDublin,hecommencedthestudyofphilosophy atAllHallows'College.Concurrentlyheattended theUniversityCollege,wherehecompletedthe BachelorofArtsdegreein1921.ThentoSt.Peter's College,Wexford,wherehereadtheologyforfour years.Duringthattimehehadvolunteeredforthe PerthArchdioceseandafterordinationin1925,heset outforthefieldofhispastorallabours.

PastorallifeinPerthhadnoneoftheromanceof theforeignmissionfields.Itwasahugeareaecclesi- asticallyunderpopulated.Theyoungpriestwas attachedtotheCathedralstaffandhadthejunior curacyofEastPerth.Heprovedindefatigablein visitingthefamiesofthedistrictintheirhomesandin attendingpatientsatthePerthHospital.

Soconspicuouslysuccessfulwashisworkthat,four yearsafterhisarrival,ArchbishopCluneappointed himAdministratoroftheCathedral.Forayoung priestwhohadnothadtheresponsibilityofparochial chargeitwasatonceagreatburdenandanomenof thefuturethatwastounfoldforhim.Forthead- ministratorhadalsoalargeshareofthechancellery dutiestocarryout.

Oneofhisfirstactswastoprovideaproperly- oiganisedadministrativecentre.Thishedidbycon- %ertingtheoldparochialhallintoasuiteofmodern offices.MeanwhileSt.Mary'sCathedralwasa-build- ingandhehadtorelievetheArchbishopofthethou- sand-and-onedetailsthatattendsuchavastenter- prise.

Astheyear1929drewonFr.Prendivillewasleft infullcommandoforganisingtheinauguralrites.His efficiencyinthisgreattaskearnedhimthespon- taneouspraiseofthevisitingprelates.

Theyouth,enthusiasmandsheerhardworkofthe newArchbishopfiredtheimaginationofhispriests andpeople.Theyrealisedhowexactingwasthetask beforehim-toeasetheclosingyearsoftheeminent Dr.Cluneandeventuallytostandinhisplace.

Soforthenexttwoyearshethrewhimselfwithout stintintotheroutineEpiscopaldutiesofCanonical VisitationandtheconferringoftheSacramentof Confirmation.Hetravelledextensivelythroughout thewideareasoftheArchdiocese,interestinghimself inparticularfashioninthereligiouseducationof childreninremoteareas.

InMarchof1935,hewentintheArchbishop's steadtomaketheadliminavisittoRome.From therehevisitedIrelandandhere,alittleovertwo monthssinceheleft,hereceivedthetidingsofthe deathofArchbishopChineonMay24th.Afterhur- riedvisitstotheIrishseminariesseekingmorepriests andstudentsfortheArchdiocese,hereturnedto PerthtoassumetheburdenofsuccessiontotheSee. Despitethebesteffortsofdeputies,theArchdiocese hadnecessarilyrundownduringthelongillnessof Dr.Clune.Therewerearrearstobeovertakenandnewdevelopmentwasclamant.WithtremendousenergyArchbishopPrendivillesetaboutabuilding programmeofbreath-takingproportions.Forthe threeyearspriortotheoutbreakofWorldWarII, thepacewasterrific.Itwasinevitabletherewould bedomesticcriticismEventhebenignantsceptics wonderedwhethersofastagrowthcouldsinkdeep roots.However,therelativeinactivityimposedby theexigenciesofwargavepauseforre-assessment andwiththecomingofthearmisticeandgreatmig- rationshiftofDisplacedPersonstoAustralia,the Archbishop'svision,courageandtrustinGodandthe futurehavebeenvindicated.

InadditionheenlargedhiscontactswithcivicandWheretheChurchisconcernedthereisnevera commercialleadersofthecommunitywhichaddedtomerequestionofexternalexpansion.Ifnewchurches hisprestigeforbusinesscapacity,tactandunderarebuiltitisbecausethereisneedthereoftheMass, standing. theSacramentsandtheministrationsofapriest.

ButhisprimarypreoccupationwasforthespiritualWhereschoolsmushroomitisbecausethereisimpera- needsofhisflock.Herealisedtheneedforprotect-tiveneedof.providingChristianeducationforthe inggirlsfromthecountryandotherslivingawayyoung.SoitisthattheepiscopateofHisGrace,by fromhome.TothisendhefosteredtheCatholicGirls'adeliberatepolicyofdecentralisation,expressedcon- HostelanddoubledthemembershipoftheCatholiccretelyinsmallparishes,hasbroughtthelightand YoungLadies'Club. thestrengthoftheFaithintoeverycornerofthe Archdiocese.Thenumberofpriestshasincreased IntenseThree-YearProgramme from59to173.ThenumberofteachingBrothers Inthemidstofthisstrenuousroundofreligiousfrom29to193,andofteachingnunsfrom450to andbusinessdutiescamewordfromRomethathe1,059. hadbeennamedCoadjutorArchbishop.TheselectionInthefirstyearofhisepiscopate,theHolyName wasonedeartoArchbishopClime'sheartandwasSocietywasestablishedtoprovideahardcoreof generallywellreceived.TheappointmenttothepracticalCatholicmen.TheCatholicWomen'sLeague EpiscopateofmenfromcurialofficeisnotinvariablywasinauguratedtoencourageCatholicwomentotake happy,buttimewastoproveinthiscasethatthetheirappropriateplaceinpubliclife. lackofparochialexperiencewaslargelycompen-

InAShortPeriodHeHasFilledOutALifetime

TheFortyHours'Prayerwassetinannualrotationthroughouttheparishesandahomileticcourse ofsermonscoveredathree-yearperiod.Thesacred liturgywasbroughtintocloseconformitywith Romanprescriptionsandgreatadvancesweremade intherestorationofsacredmusic.Afterlongand carefulplanningthefirstDiocesanSynodin1940 regularisedthedisciplineoftheArchdiocese.

CatholicActionwasformallyinauguratedinthe ArchdiocesewiththeYoungChristianWorkers,the NationalCatholicGirls'Movement,theYoungChris!ianStudentsandtheCatholicSocialMovement.

Theworksofcharitywereactivelypromoted. FromtheconstitutionoftheSt.VincentdePaul ConferencesintoaCentralCouncilin1935,thework hasexpandedtoaSeamen'sMissionatFremantle andahavenfordestitutemenatCamillusHouse, EastPerth.

Thisyearmarksthe10thanniversaryoftheholdingofthegreatEucharisticprocessioninhonourof ChristtheKingatAquinasCollege.

PerhapsthemostconsolatoryachievementofHis Grace'sreignwastheestablishmentoftheMinor SeminaryofSt.CharlesatGuildford.Begunwitha staffofdiocesanpriestsundertherectorshipofMgr. (nowBishopGoody),itpassedintothehandsofthe VincentianFathersandtodayhasanenrolmentof 43students,while14priestshavebeenordained. ThenumberofReligiousOrdersintroducedintothe Archdiocesehasgrownby121.

HisGrace,whonowranksfourthintheAustralian Hierarchy,hasseenagoodnumberofchangesinthe HierarchyoftheWesternProvinceofwhichheis Metropolitan.In1942heattendedtheenthronement ofBishopGummerasBishopofGeraldton.Hesaw theconsecrationofBishopGallagherasOrdinaryof PortPirieatGeraldtonandtheblessingofAbbot GregoryasnewAbbotNulliusofNewNorcia.

In1951athisownrequest.BishopGoodywas consecratedashisAuxiliaryandthreeyearslaterwas appointedBishopofBunbury,excisedfromtheArchdiocese.In1955,againattheArchbishop'srequest, MonsignorRafferty,whohadbeenfor19yearsonthe Cathedralstaff,wasconsecratedAuxiliary.

GreatScenesAtTheCentenary

In1954.HisGraceinauguratedtheParentsand Friends'Federation.HealsoissuedtwoPastoral Letters--oneonVocationsandtheotherontheDuty ofMakingtheFaithKnown.TheMarianYearwas observedthroughouttheDiocesewithgreatsolemnity,culminatinginagreattorchlightprocessionat theCathedral.LikewisetheHolyYearof1950had beenmarkedwithparticulardevotion,especiallyby pilgrimagestothevariouschurches.

In1956theCrusadeofPrayerforthepreservation ofAustraliaasaChristiannationwaslaunchedinall parishes.Meanwhileinmostofthemajorparishes, perpetualMarianNovenashadbeeninaugurated.

TheLegionofMaryhasdevelopedrapidly,interestingitselfinhomevisitationandconcentrationon convertwork.Pre-CanaConferencesforengaged coupleshavealsobecomearegularfeatureofDiocesanworkandtheDiocesanTribunalmeetsregularly.

Guildsforteachers,doctorsandnursesprovide interestingvocationalgroupsforthoseconcerned.

ThecentenaryofthefoundationoftheChurchin

HisGracetheArchbishopreceivedthePalliumfromthe-hands oftheMostRev.J.O'Collins(thenBishopofGeraldton)at St.Mary'sCathedralonJune28,1936.

thisStatewasobservedin1946.TheCardinalArchbishopofSydneyandprelatesfromallStatesattendedtheceremoniesandmadetheoccasionmemorable.

Theworkofeducationhasprogressedremarkably, especiallyinthenumberofprimaryschoolsandcolleges.TheCatholicLibraryhasbeenextended,togetherwiththeCatholicPressandaregularweekly radiosession.Therehasbeenanotableadvancein newhospitals,homesfortheaged,workfornative welfareandthecareoforphans.

DangerLoomsToPrimarySchools

MostrecentlytheoperationofSt.ThomasMore CollegewithintheUniversityhascompletedthe educationaladvanceonthetertiarylevel.

HisGracehasshownaparticularinterestinthe workofmigrationwhichhasnotablyincreasedthe Catholicpopulation.

Fourteennationalchaplainsservetheirrespective groupshereandspecialfacilitiesareofferedthem attheChildrenofMaryChapel(Perth),atFremantle.

WestPerthandNortham.Specialattentionhasbeen giventoNewAustralianorphans.

TheMotherChurchoftheArchdiocesehashadits groundsbeautified,acarillonofbellsinstalledand theoldsectionisbeingre-roofed.

Duringthewaryears,despitethelullinbuilding activities,theCatholicWelfareOrganisationdidmuch forservicemenbytheirhutsatNorthamandMelvillecamps. HisGraceisyetarelativelyyoungmanbuthehas spenthisenergiesover-generouslyinthepastquarter century.Therenowloomsbeforehimthecritical situationoftheCatholicPrimarySchoolsItistypicallymodestthatwhenheappealedfornopubliccelebrationofhisjubileeheaskedthattheprayersof thefaithfulshouldbedirectedtothesolutionofthis fatefulquestion.

Itremainsthehighprivilegeofthispaper,onbehalf oftheAuxiliaryBishop,thereverendclergyandthe laitytothankHisGraceforhisgreatworkforthe gloryofGodinthepast25yearsandtoexpressthe hopethatGodwillgranthimyetmorefruitfulyears forthewelfareoftheChurch.

TheirSubiacoCollegehasanenrolmentof380 while150attendtheirNorthamCollege.

Howawe-inspiringthescenewhentheconsecratingPrelate,andthetwoassistantBishops,imposehandsontheheadofthe Bishop-elect,saying,simply:"ReceivetheHolyGhost."AtthatmomenttheHolySpirit,WhomtheLiturgyheraldsandwelcomes withtheoldandelevatingmelodyoftheVeniCreatorSpiritusismightilypresent,translatingfrailhumannatureintoApostolic statureandthefulnessofthepriesthoodofJesusChrist.

TheDivineWorkman,theHolySpirit,takespossessionandfillsthe-,oulofthenewBishopwithHissevenfoldgifts.Fromthat momenttheBishopisindirectdescentfromtheApostles.AndastheApostleswerecompletelytransformedintospiritualleaders andteachersofmen,sothepriestwhogoesthroughthelongandseriousceremonyofconsecrationemergesanewman.Christ entersintothesoulofHisnewApostlesothoroughlyandefficientlythatHecancommissionthenewBishopthus:"Hethathears youhearsMe."

OnSunday,October22,1933,theVeryRev.Father RedmondPrendiville,AdministratorofSt.Mary's Cathedral,kneltinthesanctuaryastheconsecrating Prelate,HisExcellencytheApostolicDelegate,ArchbishopFilippoBernardini,andthetwoco-consecrators,MostRev.Dr.Hayden,ArchbishopofAdelaide,pressedtheirhandsuponhishead,saying: "AccipeSpiritumSanctum"("ReceivetheHoly Spirit."

Theseventy-year-oldArchbishopofPerth,Dr. Clune,watched,fromhisthroneinthesanctuary, theyoungpriest,hisownpersonalchoiceandrequest, beingelevatedfromsimplepriesthoodtoarchiepiscopalrank.

Visitingprelates,theBishopofLismore,Dr.Carroll, theBishopofToowoomba,Dr.ByrneandtheBishop ofGeraldton,Dr.O'Collins,wishedtheyouthful Bishopmanyfruitfulyearsbytheirpresenceand theirprayers.WiththeexceptionofDr.O'Collins, nowBishopofBallarat,allarenowgonetotheir reward.

Surely,theywilliemembertheepiscopalsilver jubileeanniversaryofthatdayanduniteinpetition totheHolySpirittokindleinthesoulofthejubilarianthefireofHisDivineLove,thathiszealand devotion,hisconfidenceandcourage,hisleadership anddrivemaycontinuetoblessandenrichtheArchdioceseformanyayear.

ThedeceasedpriestsofWesternAustraliaassons intheirFather'sHousewillrallyaroundthePrelates whohaveruledtheSeeofPerthandsingaTeDeum fortheextraordinarygrowthoftheseedtheyplanted intheWest,especiallyduringthelasttwenty-five years.

WhenwecelebratethesilverjubileeonOctober 22,1958inourMassesofThanksgiving,wemayjoin ourbrethreninHeaveninmakingtheoccasionafeast daymemorableinHeavenandonearth.

Thelongceremonyover,thelaying-onofhands. theanointings,thesymbolsofepiscopalauthorityand dutysolemnlygiventohiskeeping,Co-adjutorArchbishopPrednivillefacedthecrowdedCathedral,mitre onhead,crozierinhand,episcopalringsparklingon

hisglovedfinger,buskinsandsandalsonfeet,he stoodthere,erect,dignified,confident,apriesttransformedbytheworkingsoftheHolySpirit.Weall sawthechangeinhim.

BlessingtheoldArchbishop,whosatthereproud andhappyandgratefulforthatdayofdays,he movedthroughthesanctuarytothealtarrailsto blessfirsthisownfamily,hissister,theMother PrioressGeneraloftheDominicanSisters.andhis biothersandtheirfamilies.

Accompaniedbytheco-consecratingArchbishops hewalkedwiththespringinhisstepofayoung, athleticman,radiantinhealthandofamostattractiveappearance.Hisimpressiononthecongregation wastremendous,andmanyatearofjoyandgratitude bedewedhisprogressonhisfirstofficialblessingas Archbishop.

Allthatdaypriestsandpeopleclusteredaroundthe youthfulprelatewearinghispectoralcrossandring. ArchbishopKillianeasedtheworrkofthosewho remarkedthatthenewBishoplookedmuchtooyouthfulbyremarking:"Thatissomethingthathewill growoutof,andthatsoon."

AttheluncheontheoldArchbishopconcludedhis speechbylayinghishandupontheshoulderofthe newBishop,saying:"Hehasalwaysbeenamost faithfulpriestandhehadneverhadamorefaithful friend."

Inhiseloquentandmovingexpressionofgratitude atthememorableconcertthateveningatHis Majesty'stheatre,Dr.Prendivillespokewithagift oftongueswhichwewhoheard,acceptedasanother strikingevidenceofthetransformationwroughtin himbytheHolySpirit.

Hisvoicegaineddepthandresonanceandhadthe ringofaconfidentcommission.PriestsandpeopleweredelightedthattheCo-adjutortothegoldenvoicedArchbishopofPerth,Dr.Clune,hadoratory alsoasaconsecrationgift.

Asastreamrisesinthehillsandflowsonwards towardsthesea,gainingdepthandwidthandpower andstrength,sothisidealof"Givemesouls"has beenthestrongcurrentintheepiscopalreignofthe Archbishopcarryingwithitthebuildingofthose necessaryinstrumentsofsalvation,churches,schools, hospitals,institutions,conventsandpresbyteries.And tothesehousesofbrickthatidealinspiredaliving soulandbroughttheblessingofGodtotheworks ofthehandsofman.

"Givemesouls"hasbeenthestarthathasilluminatedeverystepofhispathduringthepasttwentyfiveyears.ResolutelytheArchbishophasfollowed itslightnomatterhowdifficultthegoing.Ofevery problemthatcametohimasaBishophismottoenlightenedhimtoconsiderandgivehimwisdomto decide.

From1933to1935theCo-adjutorArchbishopgave histimeanddevotiontotheparishesinthecountry. WithalighthearthecrossedtheCausewaytospend happydayswiththecountrypriestsandaccompanied themonvisitationtothefarmhomes.

ThechildrenenrolledintheReligiousHoliday Schoolshadaspecialplaceinhisaffectionandthere onthefrontlineofCatholicActionintheBushhe learnedthewonderfulcontributionmadebythe Bushies'Scheme.

ExaminingthechildrenforConfirmationhelearned tohisdelightthatthechildrenattendingthetwo weeks'instructionattheConventcouldholdtheir ownwiththechildrenwhowerepupilsoftheconvent school.TheHolySpiritdoesgreatthingsinthesouls ofthechildrenattendingtheReligiousHoliday Schools.

From1935tothebeginningofthewarwewitnessed asecondspringofgrowthanddevelopment.Courage andconfidenceintheLordoftheharvestinspired theArchbishoptobuildandbuildandhowrichly thattrustintheLordwasrepaid.

Hadhepursuedamorecautiousprogrammeand delayedtheerectionofparishchurchesandschools, howdearlyweshouldhavepaidforthisso-called humanprudence.Inthoseyearsapoundgota pound'sworthandmanyaparishpriestblessedthe Archbishop'svisionandencouragementtobuildwhen warcamewithitsspirallingofpricesandinevitable restrictions.

Thewaryearswerenotidleones,forhisGrace usedeveryformoftransporttobringpriestsfrom Irishseminaries.Thewarhadclosedthemissionsin theU.S.A.andGreatBritain,andyoungmenwere seekingaBishoptoadoptthemandadioceseto workin.HeretheArchbishopgainedaspiritual windfallofpriests,ablessingwhichDivineProvidencehasgrantedtousoutofthesadtragedyof war.

UniversityCollegeWasActOfCourage

Thecentenarycelebrationsof1946broughtthe AustralianHierarchytoPerth,andtheBishopssaw forthemselvestherichharvestfromtheaudacious sowingoftheArchbishop.Theysawwithevident approvalthenumberofpriestsbusyabouttheLord's businesswhiletheycontrastedtheirownshortageof priests.

TheyearsthatfollowdowntothisJubileeyearare sostrikingintheamountandvarietyofundertakings thattopresentthewholepicturewehaveaddeda summaryofphotosandcommentofthisextraordinary decade.Itisnotmypurposeinthistributetooutlineindetailthatformidableprogramme;readers maygooveritsprogressyearbyyearinthissouvenir issue.

Buttherearetwoachievementsinthisyearof jubileewhichcommendthemselvestomeasaschool man.Thisyear,1958,sawtheopeningofaCatholic UniversityCollegewithintheUniversity.Thatwas adreamof1933whentheNewmanSocietywas founded.Wehavetalkedaboutitandhopedforit buthadtoawaitthecourageoftheArchbishopto setthecampaigngoing.

Hediditatatimewhenparisheswerebuildingand overdraftswereheavyandsomanyessentialparish unitswereneeded.Hesawwiththevisionofa leaderthatunlesswecompletetheeducationaledifice andaddthetertiarystoreytothprimaryandsecondaryonesweshallnothavetrainedlaypeopletoupholdthenameanddignityofourChurch.

HisGracetheArchbishopanddiocesanclergyatthefirstSynodheldin1940.

TheLordrewardedhiscourageinamoststriking way.Adiocesanpriest,MonsignorMoss,ofNedlands. devotedafamilyinheritancetotheChapel,paying foritandthusfulfillingHisGrace'sdesireofsomethingdevotionalandbeautifulandinspiringtothe Universityfamilyofteachersandstudents.

Theseconddeterminationisevidenceofevena deeperfaithandunshakentrustinthGoodLord. TheCatholicSchoolFundappealhasbegunand throughit2.poolwillbeestablishedfromwhichlay teacherscanbepaidwhiletrainingandteaching. ThisisamightyburdenforArchbishop,priests,and laitytoshoulder,butitisabsolutelyessential.We shallnotneednewchurchesunlesswehaveCatholic schools.

YearsSilveredWithLoveOfGod

Theheroicreligious.BrothersandSistersofthe TeachingOrders,havedoneandcontinuetodotheir part.Butitisnotenough,forCatholicchildren cannotfindaplaceinCatholicschools.Newschools sourgentlyneededifwearetoholdourCatholic familiescannotbeopenedforlackofstaff.Thebig, unwieldyclassescannotbedividedunlesswerecruit layteachers.

Letmeconcludethisjubileetributebydirecting yourattentiontothepeaksofcourageousinitiative andtherichvalleysofnumerousaidstoholinessof lifewhichthelongmountainrangeoftheArchbishop'sactivitiesfortwenty-fiveyears,yearssilvered withtheloveofGod,contain,andarelistedforyour admirationandgratitudeinthisJubileeSouvenir. Anypartofitwouldbesufficienttowintheesteem, appreciationandgratitudeofhispriests,religious, andpeople.

Buttounderstandhowallthiswasaccomplished, weshallfindthesourceofthisstreamofApostolic energyinhismotto:"Daanimasceteratolle"has

beenthebeckoningstar,andtheimpellingforceof hisoccupationoftheSeeofPerth.

Elsewhereinthisissueappearsalistof schoolsandschool-churchesopenedduring theepiscopacyofHisGracetheArchbishop. Thislistinitselfisatributetotheenergy withwhichthistask,socentrallyconcerned withthetransmissionofthefaith,hasbeen attacked.

Li1936ayearafterHisGracehadsucceededtothe SeeofPerth,theschoolenrollmentwas9,827.In 1958inthepresentArchdioceseofPerththereare 18,922children.

Tounderstandthefullvolumeoftheincrease,one wouldhavetoaddtothecurrentfigure,the1958 enrolmentoftheDioceseofBunbury,whichwaspart oftheAchdioceseuntil1955.Thatwouldmakethe currenttotal22,486,withanincreaseintheperiodof 129percent.

Thebulkofthisincreasehasbeenpost-war,and hasrequiredtheexpansionofexistingschoolsaswell asthefoundationofnewschoolsinnewareas.One goodindexoftheincreasehasbeentheenormous expansionofboys'schools.IntheArchdiocesein 1936,therewerefivesuchschools(C.B.C.,St.George's Terrace;C.B.C.,Fremantle;St.Patrick'sSchool; Mary'sMountandC.B.C.,Kalgoorlie),enrolling1,417 boys.

TodaythereareintheArchdiocese15schoolsof thistype,enrolling4,519boys,anincreaseof219per cent.,excludingthreeboys'schoolsopenedinthe DioceseofBunbury.Theschoolsaddedhavebeen solongapartofCatholiclifeofWesternAustraliain manyinstances,thatitishardtorecallthetimewhen therewereonlyfivesuchschools.

NunsAttendTeachers'TrainingCollege

Therehavebeencorrespondingadditionstogirls' schoolsinthesameperiod.Threeteachingorders ofpriests,andtwoteachingordersofBrothersbegan teachingintheperiodunderreview.Inadditionto theTeachingordersalreadypresentintheState, whosenumbrshaveincreasedheavily,fivenewteachingordersofnunshavebegunwork.

Manystepshavebeentakentomaintainthequality ofteachinginaperiodofrapidexpansionofnumbers. Foraperiodacentraltrainingschoolforteachers operated.Morerecently,andthisisuniqueinAustralia,sisterswereadmittedtoStateTrainingColleges,andnearlyfortyteachershavebeentrained underthisscheme.

TheopeningofSt.ThomasMoreCollegehasbeen avaluableadditiontothestructureofCatholiceducationintheState.Ithasmeantthatresidencefora

groupofCatholicmen students,andincreased pastoralcareforallstudents,atUniversitylevel, hasbeenmadepossible.

Thecostofthisexpansionwouldbehardtoestimate.Aconservativeaverageestimateperplace (includingboarding places)wouldbe£120, whichwouldrequirethe exenditureonprimary andsecondaryschoolsof £2,700,000;thiswouldbe exclusiveofexpenditure onresidencesforteachers.

Thepenaltyoflivingin anexpandingeconomyis thatthereseemstobea continualpursuitofever recedinggoals.TheCatholiccommunity,theteachingorders,priests,have allcontributedheavilyin thecontinuingtaskofan expandingCatholicEducationsystem.Thoseassociatedwiththisworkare consciousofthewisedirection,theencouragement.the

UniversityCollegeopeningcrownseducationalstructure initiative,andheavyersonalinvolvementofHisGrace, intheheavytaskthathasbeenaccomplished.

ConvertWorkHasExpanded

WiththeapprovalofHisGracetheArch-1 bishopanewPraesidiumoftheLegionof MarymetforthefirsttimeintheCentral CatholicLibraryinJanuary,1950.There wasonlyahandfulofmembers,oneofwhom wasaconverttotheCatholicFaith.Tothis praesidiumthePerthComitiumgavethe name"OurLadyofVictories."

Themembersofthepraesidiumcametogetherfor averyhighpurpose:toseektheirownsanctification byworkingintheLegionofMaryfortheconversion ofoutsiderstotheCatholicreligion.ThePresident ofthePraesidiumwasBrotherW.Mulligan.

Forfifteenweeksafewpeoplewhowerealready eceivinginstructionsweredirectedtothemandtheir tuitionwascontinuedinthelibrary.TheLegionaries planned,experimented,andpreparedtoextendtheir work.

InMay,1950,bycourtesyoftheSistersofMercy, VictoriaSquare,anafternoonfornon-Catholicswas heldattheirconventwithconspicuoussuccess.This wasfollowedbyaseriesofpublictalksexplainingthe CatholicreligionwhichweregiveneachThursday

nightintheCentralCatholicLibrary.

Fromthattimetheworkhasgrownrapidly.The courseoftalkshasbeenincreasedtotwenty-oneand thisyearalreadyfourDaysofInquiryhavebeenheld.

Atthepresenttimetheseriesoftalksisgivenat theCatholicCentre,VictoriaSquare,Perth,anda systemofinstructionbycorrespondencehasbeen inaugurated. Anumberofpriestshavebeenassociatedwiththe talksoftheprospectiveconverts:Rev.J.Depiazzi, Rev.F.Hope,Rev.M.Byrne,Rev.J.O'Brien,Rev.T. O'NeillandRev.M.McKeon.

Athoroughsystemofinstructionhasbeenevolved, andthecupofteaattheendoftheeveningputsthe finaltouchtothehomelyatmosphereoftheproceedings.

Nextthemovementwascarriedtotheother churchesoftheArchdiocesethroughthemediumof theschools.Aprogrammewasdrawnupandthe teachingBrothersandSisterswerehelpedbylectures anddemonstrationsconductedbytheDiocesanDirectorofSacredMusicwhomHisGracehadappointed ThesewerefollowedbyayearlyFestivalofLiturgicalMusicwhichlastedfivedays.

Alloftheschoolsweregradedandcompetedatthe TownHall.Shieldsforthewinningschoolswere presentedbyHisGrace.Thefestivalendedwitha HighMassattheCathedralsungby2,000children, whoflowedoverintothesidechapelsandthechoir gallery.

AtFremantlethesamethinghappenedwith800 children.LaterasimilarFestivalwasinaugurated atKalgoorlie.Asacorollarytoallthisasmall bookletofDiocesanMusicRegulationswasdrawnup, beingapracticallocalapplicationofalltheruleslaid downbytheMotuProprioofPiusXandtheConstitutionofPiusXIandotherinstructionsfromthe SacredCongregation.

ThiswaslaterincorporatedintheDiocesanSynodal Decreesof1941.Al!thisworkisnowbeingcontinuedbythepresentDirectorofSacredMusic,the Rev.PeterMcCudden.

AtthesametimeHisGraceturnedhisattentionto liturgyinthesanctuary.ThelateRev.FatherAlan JohnsonwasappointedMasterofCeremoniesatthe Cathedral.Thecorrectsetting-upofthealtaradded muchtothebeautyanddignityoftheCathedral sanctuaryinadditiontotheprovisionofstallsfor theclergy.

TodayeverysanctuaryintheArchdioceseisliturgicallycorrectandanotablephenomenonisthebeautifulsimplicityoftheveryliturgicallycorrectcontemporarysanctuaries.

MissionAidIncreasedSevenfold

Inearly1945,HisGracetheArchbishop establishedCatholicMissionsinanoffice at81St.George's-ter.,Perth.

MigrationOfficeDoesGrand 'JobInHelpingNewAustralians

Perthwasthefirstcapitalcitytohavea post-warCatholicmigrationofficeinAustralia.In1946theArchbishoparranged fortheestablishmentofanofficeinSt. George's-tce.,andaChristianBrotherwas senttotheU.K.topreparethewayand selectchildrentobereadytoemigratewhen theGovernmentofficiallystartedtheirmigrationplanin1947.

Apart-timedirectorandsecretarydidtheinitial workuntiltheappointmentofafull-timedirector andsecretarytookovertheofficeinthemiddleof 1947,justpriortothearrivalofthefirstmigrants.

InfacttheGovernmentaskedtheCatholicMigrationAssociationinPerthtoplaceandassistthefirst DisplacedPersonstoarriveinAustralia.Thesewere closelyfollowedbylargerpartiesandthearrivalof childmigrants.

EuropeanmigrationhasbeenmostlyGovernmentsponsored,butbecausealargepercentageofthese areCatholic,theyhavenaturallysoughtassistance andguidancefromtheCatholicMigrationoffice.

ArrangementswerealsomadewiththeFederal CatholicImmigrationOfficetobringtoAustralia nationalchaplains,sothatmigrantsofeverynationalitycoulddiscusstheirproblemswithoneoftheir ownpriestsandhavetheirspiritualwelfarelooked after.Nolessthan14suchchaplainshavebeen appointedinthisArchdiocese.

Nearly1,000EnglishandMaltesechildrenhave beensponsoredbytheCatholicMigrationAssociation andplacedinCatholicInstitutions.Themajorityof thesehavenowbeenassimilatedintothecommunity, servingapprenticeships,workinginshopsandoffices, attendingtheuniversityortraininginhospitals.At least95percent.haveprovedhighlysatisfactory. Severaladoptionsandfosteringshavetakenplace amongsttheyoungerchildren.

TheRev.P.LynchwithSt.Cecilia'sChoir

ThechoirofSt.Cecilia,abodyof28laymen,startedpracticeintheCatholicLibrary in1936underthedirectionofRev.Albert Lynch.Theysangthewholeoftheliturgical musicofHolyWeekin1937-inchoirdress.

In1938HisGracearrangedforagroupof30boys tobeformedintoaboys'choir-oneyearbeforeany otherCathedralinAustraliaformedsuchachoir. Withthewillingco-operationoftheChristian Brotherstheseboyswereeducatedandtrainedin musicunderascholarshipsystem-anarrangement -whichstilloperates.

Thefollowingyeartheycommencedsingingatthe eveningDevotionsofEaster.Soontheytookover thewholeofthesingingattheCathedral,joinedby tenorsandbassesfromtheSocietyofSt.Cecilia.

TherequirementsofthegreatMotuProprioon LiturgicalMusicofPiusXwerecarefullyfollowedandsoonnotonlyGregorianChantbutthegreat Massesandmotetsoftheclassicalpolyphonicwriters mereheard.

CatholicMissionswastobetheorganisingheadquartersforthefourPontificalMissionAidSocieties, namely,theSocietyforthePropagationoftheFaith, theHolyChildhoodSociety.theSocietyofSt.Peter ApostleandtheMissionaryUnionoftheClergy.

Previouslythesesocietieshadbeeninexistencein theDioceseformanyyears,butthestabilisingofa specialofficeandtheappointingofapriestincharge ofit,gaveagreatimpetustotheirfunctioning.

InthirteenyearsthetotalreturngfromthePontificalWorkshasrisenfromapproximately£2,000to £14,786in1957, AnoutstandingeventinthelifeofCatholicMissionswastheMissionaryExhibitionwhichwasorganisedbythisofficeaspartoftheDiocesanCentenary Celebrationsin1946.Theworkofalmostevery MissioninAustraliawasdisplayed,andsomenotable lecturesweregiven.

SincetheopeningoftheCatholicCentre,Catholic Missionshastransferredtothisbuilding.

Inall,approximately150,000newarrivalshave cometoWesternAustraliasince1947.Themajority havebeenGovernmentsponsored,butquitealarge numberhavebeensponsoredbyrelativesandfriends.

TheCatholicMigrationofficehasbeenresponsible forassistingmanyofthesepeopleinthecompletion oftheirdocuments,arrangingaccommodationand employment(wherepossible),andgrantingatravel loanforbringingEuropeanrelativestoAustralia.

SpecialcaseshavebeensponsoredbytheAssociation,apartfromaBritishfamilyapproximatelyevery month.GroupsofHungarianyouthsandItalian girlshavealsobeensponsoredandplacedbythe Association.

LinkedwiththeMigrationOfficeisacentralWelfareOffice,whereproblemsofeverytOnCeiVable naturearetackled,andsortedoutifatallpossible. Alotofworkisdoneherealsofortheinstitutions, includinginterviewswithparents,liaisonwithChild WelfareandotherGovernmentDepartments,andthe preparingofsubsidyandChildEndowmentclaims. ThisworkhasbeenofgreathelptotheInstitutions, leavingtheBrothersandSistersmoretimetoattend totheneedsofthechildrenintheircare.

AnotherCatholicActionassociationbegunhere duringHisGrace'sepiscopateistheYoungCatholic Student'sMovementoperatingintheschoolstobring moreandmoretoscholarstheinseparablerelation betweenreligiousteachingandallphasesoflife.

TheCatholicSocialMovementasanassociationof theLayApostolateforadultshasreceivedparticular attentionfromHisGrace.Somanyaspectshavehad tobeconsideredinguidingthisbody-therelationshipbetweenChurchandpolitics,theinculcationof Catholicsocialprinciples,theinstructionsoftheHoly SeeontheLayApostolate,andthefreedomofindividualstochoosewhatmethodsseemmosteffective tothemselvesinthefightagainstCommunism.

HisGracehashadtoexercisealltheresourcesof hismindandheartcourageouslytoorientatethesocial movementsothatitexiststodayasanorganisation formingthemoralandsocialconsciencesofCatholics whileleavingthemfreetoexercisetheirownindividualinitiativeinthepoliticalandtradeunionfields.

TheSt.VincentdePaulSocietywasinexistence atthebeginningofHisGrace'sepiscopate.Hehas supporteditsmembersincarryingontheirworkof

ArallyoftheY.C.W.andN.C.G.M.atSt.Joseph'sChurch,Subiaco theapostolatethroughmaterialhelpandlikethe charityofChristhehasurgedthemtonewendeavours byhispresenceattheirfestivalmeetingsandfor instancebylayingthefoundationstonehimselffor CamillusHousewhichhasbeentheinstrumentality ofsomuchChrist-likehospitality.Withhishelpthe societyhasdoubleditsmembership.

Low-pricedCatholicliteraturewasconstantly neededforthedisseminationoftruedoctrines,sothe Archbishopin1956establishedtheApostolateofthe WrittenWordandnowthisimportantapostolicwork withitsheadquartersintheCatholicCentreisalready achievingmuchgoodandshowspromiseoffulfilling HisGrace'shopesforitsevenmoresuccessfulfuture.

TheLayApostolateintheworldofentertainment hasnotbeenneglected.HisGraceafterconsidering thepossibilitiesinthisfieldgavehisapprovalin1941 totheTherrySocietywhichhashelpedtogiveamore thoroughlyCatholicmindtomany.

TheNewmanSocietyalreadyexistingforuniversity graduatesandunder-graduatesreceivedHisGrace's supportandforCatholiclayteachersheinstituted theCatholicTeachers'Guildwhichhasproveda tremendousbenefit.

Asthoughthatwerenotenoughtoexhausthis energiesintheintellectualfield,HisGracehasthis yearinauguratedcoursesinAdultEducationwhich atpresentprovidelecturesintheologyandphilosophy withplansfortheinclusionofothersubjects.

CatholicdoctorshavebenefitedbyHisGrace'sinaugurationoftheGuildofStLuke,andCatholic nurseshavebeenhelpedbytheformationofthe CatholicNurses'Guild.

TheyheardhereHisGrace'saddressattheopening oftheirCatholicActionConference.

TheEpiscopalChairmanoftheY.C.W.calledit "trulyinspiring";thenationalchaplainsaiditwas "magnificent."Theconferencedelegatesaskedfor andobtainedroneodcopiesofthespeechtheyhad heardtotakebacktotheirhomeStates.

Mereexternalexpansioninthewayofbricksandmortarisnotnecessarilyanindexofadeepeningofthetruespiritofreligion. ButanexpansionoftheFaithdoespostulatesomeoutwardandvisiblesign.ThosewhothinkoftheChurchinpurelyspiritualterms forgetthatitsextensionisintimeandspace.Christ'sMysticalBodyisavisibleorganisationtoenduretilltheendoftime.

TheepiscopateofHisGracetheArchbishophasbeentrulyextraordinary intemporalmonuments.Throughthepursuitofaconsistentpolicyofdecentralisation,morethan60parisheshavebeenerectedcompletelyequippedwith churchandschool(usuallyincombination)andpresbytery.

Therecordisactuallymoreimpressivethanthestatisticsreveal,forduring thesixyearsofwar,buildingwasvirtuallyatastandstill.Andduringthe pastyearsthecredit"squeeze"hasmadetheraisingofcapitaladifficultbusiness.Evenwhenmoneyhasbeenavailableithasbeenatruinousratesof interest.

Aninterestingreactiontothelatterfactorhasbeentheincreaseinthe"selfhelp"principleinparochialdevelopment.Notonlyhasitresultedinagreat

diminutionofcostsbutithasgreatlydevelopedthecorpsd'esprit. Latterlytherehasarisen"self-help"intheformoffindingcapitalforbuildings,extensionsandmaintenance.Thishashadthesalutaryeffectofeliminatingtheinterestfactor(exceptfororganisationalfeeswhereaprofessional bodyhasbeenemployed)andofgivingparishionerstheprospectofadebtfreefuture.

Externallythebuildingis finishedinredpressed bricksandgreycement dressings,androofedwith greyterracottatilestomatch theoldslateroof.

Apublicaddresssystem hasbeeninstalledthroughoutwithmicrophonepositionsatbothaltarandpul-pit,withfacilitiesforrelayingtothechurchgrounds ifnecessary.

AttheconclusionofMass HisGrace congratulatedtheArchbishop theparish priest,hisassistantsandthe peopleofSt.Brigid'sonthe completionoftheirchurch.

Itwasamagnificentparish church-oftheoldworld type-andwouldrankwith !the bestparishchurchin anydiocese,intheoldworld ofthenew,hesaid.

HecomplimentedMonsignorSullivanonhiscourage inundertakingthefinancial responsibility.Thatcourage sprangfromhisdeepfaith andconfidenceinGod.It sprang,too,fromhisconfidenceinhisparishioners, whowereloyal,generous, andself-sacrificing.They

Heremindedtheassembleddoctorsthatwhile theycontributedtothe buildingofthehumanbody intheirprofessionalwork, theyshouldrealisethat

withouttheinfluenceof Christonthesouloftheir patients,theirworkwas withoutitsfullfruit.

Itmightappearattimes, hecontinued,thatadvances inmedicalpracticeconferredgreatbenefitonthe sickattheexpenseofCatholicprinciplesandethics. Thedoctorwhodisregarded Catholicobligationsinapplyingnew-foundmeasures oftreatment,labouredin vain.

Inconclusion,Father HawkinssaidthatMary hadprovidedthe"Bread andtheWine"tobuildthe

physicalbodyofJesus ChristandthatCatholic doctorscouldemulateher byprovidingspiritualand physicalnourishmentfor theirpatients.

WiththecomingofJesus Christandthefulfilmentof theOldLawcameanew sacrificebywhichmen wouldadoreGod,asacrifice, notofsomethingearthyand comingfromthemselves, butonewhichwasgiven thembyGodhimselfnevertheless,inthesacredPerson ofJesusChristSecondPersonoftheBlessedTrinity becomemantoredeemand savethem.

Theincentiveofthefaithfultobuildworthyplaces forthesacrificeofMassand forthereservationofChrist

wasmuchmoreforceful thananaturalinclination andChristendomwascoveredwithbuildings,some majestic,somesimple,but alldedicatedtothesame divineandnoblepurpose.

Itwasalwaysthefondest hopeofeveryparish,inbothIthadbeentheonerous clergyandlaity,thattheirtaskofthepresentparish own churchparticularparish wouldbeaplace wherethedecentadoration ofGodcouldtakeplace.The surroundings,apartfromthe presenceofChrist,ledto thedevotionalmienofthe people,theadequateper- formanceoftheliturgy.
