HisGraceLaunches"SaveOur Schools"CampaignAtCathedral

St.Mary'sCathedral.

InaugurationoftheCatholicSchoolFundfromallpulpitsof theArchdioceseonSundaylastwasunderlinedbythepreaching ofHisGracetheArchbishopatthe11a.m,and5p.m.Massesat licismandpatriotismbeingtheminthecityandcountryduringthepast25 years-Iamconfidentthat you,too,willrisetotheoccasionasyourforefathers did;thatyouwillmeetthis challengeworthilyand generously.

HisGracesaidthat79 yearsagowhentheGovernmentof (unjustly)thedaydecided towithdrawsup- portfromprivateschools,the HiearchyofAustralia,face tofacewithacrisis,decided intheirvisionandwisdom (whichhadsincebeen amplyvindicated)thatthe Catholicschoolwouldcontinuetofunctionatallcosts.

HereinWesternAustralia,thelateBishopGibney ofsaintlymemory,appealed tothepeoplefortheirmoral andfinancialsupportofthe CatholicEducationSystem whichwastomeansomuch tothefutureoftheChurch inthisyoungland.

Thewallsoftheoldpart ofthisCathedralexchoed hisstirringwordsofappeal. Thosewords,andthewords spokenbythe othermembersoftheHierarchythroughoutthecountrydidnotfallondeaf ears.

ThoughtheCatholiccommunitywasfewinnumber, andpoor(theywerestill hewersofwoodandthe drawersofwater),neverthelesstheyrosetothe occasionmagnificentlyand magnaninimously.

Theyrespondedwitha spontaneity,generosityand spiritofsacrificethatwere characteristic oftheir ancientfaithandcharacteristicoftheracefrom whichtheywereymost) sprung.

AsaresulttheCatholic Schoolcontinuedtofunctionandthatschool,where theimageoftheCrucified Saviourwasenthronedin everyclass-room,wherethe childrenlivedandlearned theirreligioneverydayof theschoolyear,wasresponsibleforfillingthechurches throughoutthelengthand breathoftheland.

PrideOfPlace

Intheinterveningyears, verylargelyasaresultof theCatholicSchool,the Churchhadmadegreat strides.Today,theyhad aCatholicbody-virile, generous,enthusiasticand militant.Nolongerthe hewersofwoodanddrawers ofwater,buttakingtheir rightfulplaceinParliament, intheprofessions,inthe businesslifeofthecommunity:abodyofCatholics thatwouldyieldprideof placetononefortheirpiety, devotion,loyaltyandspirit ofself-sacrifice.

Itwassometimessaid thattheproductofthe CatholicSchoolwasnot loyalorpatriotic-thathis allegiancewastoRomeand nottohiscountryandCommonwealth.Whatnonsense! Thataccusationdatedback nearly400years.Itwas deeplyrootedinnational prejudiceandwasamply illustratedbythemisreadingofhistory. SofarinfactfromCatho-

evenpotentiallyatvariance, theoppositewasthecase. ThebettertheCatholic,the betterthecitizen.Inother wordstheStatefoundin theteachingoftheChurch thesurestsupportforall lawfulclaims,andthe Catholicfoundinthetenets ofhisreligionthegreatest incentiveforyieldingto loyaltyandpatriotism.

Hewasencouragedtogive toCaesarwhatbelonged toCaesarwithouteverdenyingtoGodwhatbelonged toGod.Theproductsof Catholicschoolsstood(at leastinproportion)beside theirfellowAustraliansin thelasttwowars,readyto fightanddie(asmanyof themdid)indefenceof theircountry.Suchwere theprinciplesincalcatedin theCatholicSchool.

ConfidenceInFlock

HisGracesaidhehoped thatGovernments,Stateand Federal,wouldappreciate ourcontributiontoAustralianeducationandwould giveustherecognition whichwehadbeendenied solongandsoshamefully.

Nowwefaceanother crisisoccasionedbythe shortageofReligiousteacherstomeettheincreasingenrolment.Unless sufficientfundsareavailable thereisgravedangerthat ourschoolsystemwillat leastdeteriorate.

"Iaskyou,"hisGrace continued,"willyoustand listlesslybyandwatchthat deterioration-youwho havebenefittedbythesacrificeofyourparentsand grand-parents.Willyou denytothechildrenof futuregenerations-aye 'manyofthemthechildren oftheworkingman-the benefitsyouhaveenjoyed byattendingaCatholic school?No,youcannot,and, Iknow,youwillnot.

Arnoldhasbeendescribed as"acomposerwhohas ideas,techniqueandmelodic gift"andcertainlyhis "melodicgift"andgiftfor orchestrationarehereclearlymanifest.Noteverycomposerhasthistalentfor melodyandmuchofto-

Describingtheproblemas "extremelyurgentand worrying"HisGraceadded: `;In1948therewere4,799 Catholicchildreninour schoolsinTasmania.This yearthereare7,896.OutsideourCatholicschools thereareatleast3,179 Catholicpupils.

"AlreadytheCatholicsof Melbournehaveinvested o'er£2,000,000andbuilt schoolsforover12,000children.Weareconfidentthat theCatholicsofTasmania areequaltoasimilarchallenge.

ThePopehasappointed Mgr.AlbertMeyer,Arch- bishopofChicagoinsuccessiontoCardinalWitch,who diedfourmonthsago. ArchbishopMeyerwas borninMilwaukeein1903. Heattendedtheparish school,MarquetteAcademy, andSt.Francis'sSeminary inMilwaukee.Hestudied philosophyandtheologyat theNorthAmericanCollege inRomeandwasordained in1926. HestudiedatthePontificalBiblicalInstitutein Romeforthreeyearsand gainedadoctorateinSacred Scripture.

Mgr.MeyerwasappointedsixthBishopofSuperior in1946andArchbishopof Milwaukeein1953.Through theyearshehaskept,uphis studiesofSacredScripture, beingtranslatorof theEpistlesofSt.Johnfor theConfraternityofChrisianDoctrineEditionofthe NewTestament.

Thenthechildren,on whomthechurchwould relyintheyearsahead, wereinneedofexample whichcouldbegivenby mendedicatedtosucha societyastheHolyName.

Mr.G.McKeivorpaid tributetotheenthusiasm whichhadresultedinsuch arepresentativegathering thatnight.Itwasevidence ofadeepandwidespread interestinthespiritualas wellasthenumerical strengthofthesociety. Howeverexperiencetaught thatmenwouldnotjointhe societyunlessinvitedtodo so.

Thepointnextarosehow Suchapproachshouldbe madeandithadbeensuggestedthatthismightbest bedonebyadelegationof threemembers,whowould embarkontheirworkof approaching prospective memberswiththeblessing oftheparishpriest.It couldbearrangedthatone ofthethreeshouldhavea cartofacilitatetravelling.

Initsgoldenreliquary, therelicwasexposedona specialaltarduringthe celebrationofHolyMassin theCathedralandwasveneratedbytheboysandmany oftheirparentsattheconclusionoftheMass.

Verygreatcreditfor Catholicandhometraining wasreflectedinremarksof membersduringspeeches madeattherally,which wasattendedbyalmost130 membersfromgroupsinthe cityandKalamunda.

HeedingtheadviceofFrance'sCardinalsand andBishops,FrenchCatholicscontributedheavilyto thelandslievictoryofPremierCharlesdeGaulle's "strongGovernment"constitution.Atthesametime Communistssufferedtheirmostseveresetbacksince WorldWarIIinthenaiton-widereferendum,which sawarecordturnoutof84.9percent.ofthecountry's registeredvoters.Finalofficialreturnsshowed 4,624,475"no"votesand17,666,828"yes"votesfor theproposedconstitution,whichgivesunprecedented powerstothePresidentoftheRepublicandisdesignedtoprovideFrancewithstablegovernment. Similarandevenstrongerendorsementwasgivento thenewconstitutioninFrenchoverseasterritories, includingstrife-toreAlgeria.Oneexceptionwas FrenchGuineainWestAfrica,whichvotedforits independence.

Todaythereisaviciousattackonthemostsacred functionofsex-motherhood.Thesirenvoiceofthe worldwouldhavethoseelevatedinthegreatsacramentofmarriageviolateGod'slaw.Tohelpmarried peopletoridethestormofsinthatmaythreaten theirhomes,Godgivesthemthemothers'Saint.

TherewasanincidentinthelifeofSt.Gerard whichhashigh-lightedhispoweronbehalfofmothers. Ononeoccasionwhenvisitingacertainfamilyhe droppedorforgothishandkerchief,andthelittlegirl ofthefamilypickeditupandranafterGerardto returnit.Shewastoldtokeepit.Itbecamea highlyprizedtreasurebecauseeveninhislifetime theholinessofGerardMajellabecamewellknown.

Whathehe'dmostsacredandholy,namelythe functionofsex,waspermittedbyGodtobecomethe greatestcrossofhislife.Atonetime,hewasfalsely accusedbyasinfulwomanofhavinghimselfbeen guiltyofagravesinofimpurity.Soseriouswasthe accusationthathisSuperior,St.Alphonsus,punished himandthreatenedtoexpelhimfromtheCongregationoftheMostHolyRedeemer.Godinhisown goodtimedefendedtheinnocenceoftheSaintwhen thesinfulwomanrepentedofherslanderandtestifiedthatshehadlied.

TheincidentdeepenedGerard'shumilityandmade morebrilliantthelustreofhispurity.Becauseof hisgreatpurityheknewthesacrednessofsex.He knew,forexample,thatGodcreatedthesexappetite inmanandregulatedtheuseofsexthroughthesixth andninthCommandmnts.Inaword,Gerardknew thatsexualpleasurewasgiventomanprimarilyfor thepurposeofbringingchildrenintotheworld. FatherMcCarthyfirst cametothiscountryin1935, afterservingasregional superioroftheColumban FathersintheUnitedStates. Henotedthatthousandsof Catholicstudentsinnondenominationalschoolsand collegesweregettingnoreligiousinstruction,and werestronglyinfluencedby secularistteachers.
