Beforeanaudienceofmorethan700,Mgr.Cardijngaveadynamicexpositionoftheideals,aimsandmethodsoftheYoung ChristianWorkersatLeedervilleparishhallonSeptember23.

HisGraceinwelcomingMonsignorCardijnsaid thattheMonsignorneedednointroductiontoAustralia.Hisnameandfamehadprecededhim-as theworld-famousApostleoftheworkerandthe founderoftheY.C.W.which,thoughonly40years old,wasnowestablishedin88countrieswithamembershipoftwomillions.

Thisgrowthwasampleevidencethatthehandof Godwasguidingandsustainingit.Itwasrecognised asanauthenticvoiceforyouth,andtheLeagueof

Nationshadgivenitconsultativestatus.Thatwas surelythehall-markofinternationalrecognitionand approval-atleasttherecognitionandapprovalof thefreenationsoftheworld.

TheverynameofMonsignorhadstirredthehearts ofcountlessthousandseverywhere.Nowthathewas withthemtheyweresupremelyconfidentthatasa resultofhisvisittheY.C.W.wouldmaketremendous progressthroughoutAustralia.

OnThursdaylastIhadtheprivilegeof aninterviewwithMonsignorCardijn,world founderoftheYoungChristianWorkers, andMariaMeersman,worldvice-president.

Mgr.Cardijnrecapitulat-Oneofthegreatestprobedmuchofwhathehadlemstodayintheworldwas saidtoanaudienceof700thatwemusteducatethose atLeedervilleparochialhallmillionsandhundredsof onthepreviousevening. millionsofyoungpeople whowerenotpupils,tobecomeyoungmenandyoung women,withalltheirproblems.

MonsignorCardijnsaid thattoday,intheworld, therewasagreatproblem fortheChurch.Thatproblemwasthatsomethree hundredmillionboysand girlshadtoleaveschoolto gotowork.Theydidnot knowtheproblemsoftheir dailylife.Theywereyoung menwhomustunderstand thesignificance,themission thattheyhadtodointhe futre,andalsothepreparationfortheirfuturelife,in theirhomes,intheirstreets, intheirneighbourhoodand offices.

"Whatismywork?What istheworld?Whatarethe relationsbetweenboysand girlsWhatmustIdo duringmyleisure?MustI aanceMustIdrink?Must Igotothepictures?Must Irespectmydignity?Can aboyhaveaninfluenceon otherboysandotherChristians?

Therefore,afterschool theremustbemoreand moreunitylocally,region-

ally,nationallyandinternationallyinagreatmovementwhichwouldeducate them,sothattheythemselvescoulddiscoverthe dignityoftheirdailylife, thevalueoftheirworld,the valueoftheirlife,thevalue oftheirpreparationforthe world.

alltheworld,theirleaders wereworkingfortheChristianisationofalltheproblemswhichwerebecoming greaterandgreater-aninfluenceonthefutureof theircountryandthefuture oftheChurch.

Thatwastheaimofthe Y.C.W.movement-that theythemselvesshouldsee all'theproblemsoftheir dailylife,andthatthey shouldlearntohavea Christianinfluence-a Christianconceptionof theirdailylife;thatthey shouldbeabletobeleaders oftheircompanionsand influencetheyoung,corrupt, non-Christianleadersofthe workingpeople.

Christianswhohadbeen educatedcouldworkin theirownenvirqnment,in theirowndailylife,intheir owncountryandtoday,in

Fundamentally,itwasan apostolatebyandforyouth. Youthshouldbedirectedby youth,theyshouldsee,judge andAct.

Therewasdangerthat tzuallyotherpeoplesatin judgmentandaskedyouth toactaccordingtotheir lows.

Boysandyoungworkers atonetimehadnorepre-sentation;theywerealone. Therewasnohelpforthem, noprotectionagainstaccidents,orthelowwagesemployerspaidthem.Many wereilliterateandcoudnot writeorread.Thatwasat theendofthelastcentury (1896).Homeandfamily life,becauseofpovertyand despair,wasoftenbad.

Thesonofaworkerhimself,Mgr.Cardijnsawboys hegrewupwithwhostarted workat12or14,nicecleanlivingchildren,getcaught upinthecorruptionofthe factoryyouth.Becausehe wassenttoschoolbyhis parents,theysaidtohim: "Youarewiththemanagers, youarewiththerich,not thepoor,workingboys."

Soonafterhisreception theNazisdraftedhimto warservice.Hehadto changetheblackPallottinehabitfortheblueuniformoftheGermanNavy, inwhichheservedforfive yearsduringWorldWarII andfinishedupasaU-Boat Commander.Hisboatwas successfulandFatherSilvestergainedhighwardecorations.

AfterGermany'scomplete collapsein1945hecommencedhisphilosophical andtheologicalstudiesat thePallottineSeminaryat Schoenstattwherehewas ordainedin1950.Thefollowingyearhewassentto Australiatoworkinthe

Hiszealoussoulandgreat abilityopenedhimawide fieldofactivityinthelay apostolate.Onlyrecently hefoundedasecularinstituteforyounggirls,who desiretoacquireChristian perfectionandtoworkfor theapostolatewhilestill remainingintheworld.

AfewweeksagoFather Silvesterreturnedtothe EasternStatesaftergiving theannualretreatsforthe PallottinesattheMission CentreatRivertonandat thevariousMissionStations intheKimberleyVicariate. HealsoconductedtheannualretreatoftheChristian BrothersatAquinasCollege. Completedin1953,the Marianyear,itwasblessed andopenedthatsameyear inDecember,bythe"RosaryPriest"-Fr.Patrick Peyton,C.S.C.Thebeautifulinscriptiononthisoutdoorshrinereads:"DedicatedtotheImmaculateHeart ofMaryinatonementfor thesinsofmankind."

Sincetheerectionofthe shrinecountlessblessings, favoursandgraceshave beenreceivedthroughOur Lady'sintercession. OnSunday,Oct.12,the dayprevioustotheanniversary,therewillbeaprocessionoftheBlessedSacramentat3p.m.fromthe churchtotheshrine.The statueofOurLadywillbe carried.Allreadersof"The Record"areinvitedtoattend.

NextSundaywillmarkanhistoricoccasionforthe CatholicschoolsysteminthisStateforthecallwill gooutfromallpulpitsfortheCatholiclaityliterally tosaveourschoolsfromextinction.Thecrisist''at hascomeuponusiseverybitasgraveasthatwhich usheredinthePublicInstructionAct80yearsago.It isironicalthatithasnotbeenbroughtaboutbythe machinationsofenemies,norourownfailurebut primarilythroughanationalmeasuredesignedto secureournationalsurvival.Ourcontinuedexistence inonedirectionthreatensoursurvivalinanother, andthat,themoreimportant,inasmuchasthespirit hasprimacyoverthelifeofthebody.Conversely,if thecurtailmentorcessationoftheimmigrationpolicy wouldhavemeantthesavingofourschools,wewould not,inthelongrun,havebeenanybetteroff.

FortwodecadesnowtheexpansionoftheCatholic schoolsystemhasdemandedheavysacrificeofparents. Educationalcostshavemounted,notonlyproportionatelywiththegeneralcostofliving,butwell beyondit.For,duetoimmigrationandarisingrate ofnaturalincrease,schoolenrolmentshaveadvanced abnormally.Addedtothisfactorhasbeenthecredit "squeeze,"whenbanksandotherfinancialinstitutions havedivertedcapitalfromprojectsofnationaldevelopmenttosordidconsiderationsofpersonalgain throughtherevivalofusury.Ithasnotbeenpossible fortheStatetokeeppacewiththephenomenaldemandforschoolsandstilllessfortheChurch,which canonlyfinanceeducationbyspecialtribute.Nor havetheheroicteachingOrdersbeenabletomeet thecallforpersonnel.

Thereisnowayout,shortofGovernmentalaid. AndconsideringtheinabilityoftheStatestobalance theirbudgets,theonlygenuinereliefwouldhaveto comefromCanberra.AndifCanberrapays,Canberrawouldwanttorule.NeedlesstosayAustralians cannotviewanyfurtheraccretionsofcentralpolitical powerwithanythingbutalarm.Hencethesolution oftheschools'crisiscanonlybebywayofafurther demandforparentalsacrifice,whichisnearingthe stageofheroism.Evenso,ifacapitalfundofsome millionsofpoundscouldberaised,itwouldnotrepresentacompletesolutiontotheproblem.Asitis,the amountthatmayreasonablybeexpectedforinvestmentwillspellmerelyanalleviation.Layteachers willbecomeanormalpartofthecomplementofour schoolstaffsandtheirinfluencemaybeallforthe best.Butwhetherwecanmakethesupplymeetthe demandremainstobeseen.

Thismustbeattributed totheexcellenthomelifeof thepioneerfamilieswho hadneithertheamenities northefacilitiesthatweenjoytoday.

Intheearlydaysthe riestscamebyhorseback andlaterbybuggyasthe roadsimprovedbutalthough theirvisitsweresometimes farbetweenthefaithwas nurturedinthehomesand theresultsareseentoday.

Fr.McCormackalsopraisedthegreateffortsmadeby theSistersandreminded thecongregationthatthe SistersofSt.Josephwere alwaysintheforewhenit cametoservingthedistant andremoteareas.

Nationalisation OfSchoolsIs Persecution

Colombo,Ceylon,Sept. 9:Thesuperintendentof Catholicschoolsinthe Catholicarchdiocesehas declaredthatproposed nationalisationofschools hereis"religiouspersecution."

FatherPhilipDissanayake O.M.I.,alsodeclaredthat Catholicshavetherightto havetheirchildreneducated inChurchschools.

AnyGovernmentmoveto thwartthisrightwillresult inthesuppressionofthe "denominationalsystem"of runningschools,thepriest said."Thiswillbetantamounttoreligiousintoleranceorpersecution,"he said.

FatherDissanayakespoke againstabackgroundof sharpdiscussioninthis countryonaproposalto havetheGovernment"take over"privateschools.One groundmentionedasjustifyingthisstepistheallegationthatCatholicand otherChristianschoolsseek tomakeconverts.

Againonthepresentoccasionhisencyclicaltook onaddedsignificanceinthe faceoftheanti-Church Communistonslaughtwhich hasmultiplieditsecortsto spreadso-calledPatriotic AssociationsofChinese Catholics,andassumeda newslantwiththeillegal consecrationof"elected"or Government-appointedbishops.

Formerpapalmessagesto Chinaincludetheapostolic letter,"CupimusImprimis" (Wedesireinthefirstplace) issuedonJanuary18,1952, andtheencyclical,"Ad SinarumGentem"(Tothe peopleofChina),dated October7,1954.

Thefirstdocumentgave alsothefirsthintofthe Pontiff'sconcernatCommunisteffortstodivide CatholicsinChina.

Exhortingthemtostand firmintheFaith,thePope declaredatthetimethat thefaithful"cedetonone intheirloveofthefatherland,"thusansweringCommunistaccusationsthat Catholicswere"unpatriotic" the"enemiesofthepeople." HewarnedtheChinese peoplenottobemisledby insidiousattempts,under theguiseoftruth,tosetup aschismaticchurch.

Thepapalmessageof 1954wasevenmoreexplicitlydirectedattheproblemoftheestablishmentof anationalchurchinChina. Statingthattheencyclical waspromptedlargelybythe factthatthefirstdocument didnotreallyreachthe faithful,thePopenoted thatreligiousconditionsfor ChineseCatholicshadnot improvedbutdeteriorated.

Atthesametimeareport receivedfromBishopDominicTang,S.J.,Apostolic AdministratorofthearchdioceseofCanton,indicatedthatheandhis clergywerebeingsubjectedtosevereRedpressure.TheBishopsaidthat membersoftheClergywere forcedtoattendspecialindoctrinationcoursestwice eachweek,duringwhich speakerssentbythePatrioticAssociationdenounced thePopeandtheBishopsof theChurch.

AVaticanspokesmansaid thatnewsoftheencyclical waswithheldfromtheworld untiltheVaticanwascertainthatcopiesofithad arrivedinRedChina.The spokesmansaidthatno wordofitsexistencewas allowedtoleakoutlest communistauthoritiesin Chinablockitsdistribution.

ThePontiffsaidthatthe associationhasforcedCatholicstojustifytheunjust imprisonmentorexileof bishops,priests,religious andlaymen.Headdedthat ithasobstructedthework oflegitimatepastorsandhas underminedtheobedience oftheclergyandlaity10 legitimatebishopsaswell qsworkedtoseparate Catholiccommunitiesfrom theApostolicSee.
