ThisincreasehasinvolvedtheCatholiccommunity oftheArchdioceseinavastexpenditure.Thisexpenditureisnotmadeoutofanyreserves,butoutof thecontinuousandsacrificialgivingoftheCatholic community.Thecapitalcosthasbeenvast;so,in proportion,havebeentheannualinterestcharges.The resultisthateconomicallyprovidedschoolsbecome verydearschools,wheninterestchargesareadded toacapitaloutlaythatcannotbequicklyreduced.
Whatofthefuture?Itisclearthattherearestill plentyofCatholicchildren,whoseparentsareanxious fortheirCatholiceducation.In1950,theGrade1enrolmentwas1,268children,thoughtheprovisionof newschoolsincreasedthenumbersinthatage-group asthechildrenwentthroughthegrades.Intheyears 1955-1958Grade1enrolmenthasbeensteadyon2,400.

Shouldtheschool-leavingageberaisedto15before 1962,thesecondaryfigurewouldbehigher.Itis possiblethattherewillbeaslightdecreaseinprimarynumbers,duetoafallingmarriagerate,but thepressureonsecondarygrades.andespeciallyfor girls,islikelytobeverysevere.
