DeLaSalleCollege,MidlandJunction,fieldeda teamatthelastmomentin theSchoolsBoys'Soccer Competition,JuniorGrade, heldatBayswateronFriday,August22,1958,and wontheSchools'Trophy presentedbytheWestern AustralianSoccerFootball Association.

Someoftheboyswere playingtogetherforthefirst time,andwonfourgames toreceivethetrophy.Most oftheladsresideatBassendeanandarecoachedby VincentPace.

Inyearspastagreatdeal oftheadvertisinginCatholicjournalswasfromCatholicbusinesspeopleandnot infrequentlywas given moreinaspiritofsympathy

Happilythosedayshave fledandtodaytheCatholic Presssolicitsadvertisingon itsmerits.Thatistosay thequalityofourPressis suchastobeanattractive mediumtobusinessfirmson thebasisofitsintrinsicinterestandwidecirculation. Aglancethroughour columnswillrevealthat thegreaterpartoftheadvertisingmatterisfrom firmswhicharenotCatholic.

Theyadvertisewithus becausetheyrecognisethe Catholiccommunityasa substantialminority in societyandalsobecause theygetreturns.

Wehavejustconcluded CatholicPressMonthandas aresulthaveshownanincreaseinthenumberof readers.

Inadditionweareplanningtoobtainanew,modernpresswhichwillenable ustocopewithananticipatedgreaterdemandfor largercirculation,increasedsizeandnewfeatures.

Handinglovewiththese advanceswillgothevolume ofadvertising.Thetwinaspectsofnewspaperproduction-advertisingandcirculation-arecomplementary.Theymutuallysupport oneanother.

BycontrasttheAmericansareclearlynotinterested inimperialism,atleastinthepoliticalsense.Their empireisoftheeconomictypeandeventhoughthe oilindustryisoneofthemostglaringcapitalistconcentrations,theArabshavedoneverywelloutofit indeed.Itseemstomethatitwouldbeapolitical coupdegraceofgreatmagnitudeiftheAmericans werewiseenoughatthisstagetonationalisetheoil holdingsoftheMiddleEast.Themoralityofthe caseisincontestableanditwouldenormouslyenhance theircasefor"stayingput"andensuringthesupplies onwhichthesurvivalofallEuropehangs.

ItwouldappearthattheSovietdesignatthe momentisnotthemilitaryconquestofeitherthe MiddleEastorofEurope.Foronethingtheweapon inthehandsoftheRedswhichtheyclaimisdecisive -theinter-continentalballisticmissile-isoffsetby theencirclementofAmericanbasesequippedwith long-rangeplanesandthehydrogenbomb.Forthe timebeingthemilitaryadvantagewouldbeatleast speculativeastosuccess.Butmoreimportantly,the Sovietistoorealistictowishtooccupyadevastated Europe,especiallywhenothermeanspromisetodeliverthesamegoodsintact.HencetheKremlinis concentratingoneconomicstrangulationandtheSuez crisisdemonstrateduncomfortablyhowsimplythis bedone.

InthisstrategytheMiddleEastisthecornerstone. WithgreatsubtletytheSovietisscrupulouslyavoidinganysemblanceofdirectpoliticalinterventionin theArabworld.Ofcourse,shehasbolsteredup Nasserasthepopulardemagogueandnaturalleader ofIslam.ShehasseentoitthatEgyptisadequately armedwithplanesandsubmarines.Thismilitary andeconomicaid,sheclaims,hasnostringsattached Ithasstringsallrightbuttheywillnotneedtobe pulledwhileNasserpursueshisdualcourseofgetting ridofBritainandIsrael.Itsohappensthattheaims ofArabsolidaritycoincideforthemomentwiththe SovietconspiracyagainstWesternEurope.Later,if andwhentheseaimsareactualised,Islammayrealise toolatethatshehasbeenusedasapawninthe Communistgame.

What,then,istobethoughtoftheArabStates' solution,proposingasitdoessupremeU.N."presence" tosupervisethedetente?Itisbadbecause itsupposesthatananswercanbefound in"neutralism."Itisa"solution"dear-to theheartofNehru-thathumbugwhopreachespeace, butdoesnotpractiseittowardsPakistanandwho willnotliftafingertohelpTibetfreeitselffromthe Redoctopus.ItisalsobadbecausetheUnited Nationshaveyettoprovetheireffectivenessina majorissue.Further,thearrangementsbeinginthe handsofHammarskjoel,wemaybesurethatany doubtsthatarisewillbedisposedofinfavourofthe Left.

TheUnitedNationshavehadsomeexperiencein thisvitalsectoroftheworld.

Theyoncesucceededinobtaininganagreement betweentheArabsandIsraeli,whichwasveryclose tobeingpreternatural.TheystoppedBritain,France andIsraelintheSuezcrisis-whichwasatragic mistake.TheygotRussiantroopsoutofIranshortly aftertheendofthewar.Theyintervenedbetween betweentheDutchandtheIndonesians.Theystopped thefightingoverKashmirandmanoeuvredaceasefirebetweenPalestineandEgypt.Theyalsohada shareinendingtheBerlincrisisandarrangedthe KoreanArmistice.Butnoneoftheseaffairswasa majortourdeforcenordidthearrangementseven pretendtopermanence.ItisunlikelyU:N.willhave anybettersuccessintheMiddleEast.Inanycase howcantheypreventtheoilsqueezeiftheAmericans depart?

Itwas6a.m.Thisshowwasintendedtoimpress thepeoplethatthebraveRedArmywasnotafraid of"theAmericanimperialists."
