MoreoverMaohasexertedprofoundinfluence amongtheRedsatellitesofEurope.Aftertherevolt inPoland,bothPolesandYugoslayslookedopenly toChinatopersuadetheSovietthatthetimehad comefora"liberalisation"ofpolicy.Maohimself inviteddomesticcriticisminChinauntilitcamein suchfloodthathewasforcedtoclampdownor imperilthewholetyrannyheheaded.Ittookthe HungarianrevolutiontobringKhrushchevtothesame viewpoint,butMaoclearlyhadanedgeonhimin foresight.
Concurrentlythetideofeventsisflowingagainst theWestintheMiddleEast.WithdrawalofsomeThecrisisinPolishChurch-Staterelations,brought AmericantroopsfromLebanonandthepromiseoftoaheadbythepoliceraidonthenationalMarian hri totalretirementbybothBritainandAmericain favourofaU.N.forcehasemboldenedNasserto hurryonwiththeformationofanArabFederacy throughoutthewholearea.Syriaisinthebagand SaudiArabiaandIraqarevirtually.there.Further NassertriumphsareforecastinLibyaandtheSudan. Furtherplotshavebeenuncoveredagainstthelifeof KingHussein,despitethepresenceofBritishtroops.
AllofthismakesnonsenceofPresidentEisenhower'stalkthatthe"functionofleadershipmust belongtotheArabStates."Allthatitcouldmean isNasser'sleadershipoverthewholeMiddleEast. Likewiseitmakesmonkeysoutoftheappeasing journalistswhosecatch-criesaboutArabnationalism ignorethefactthatwhatisbeingformulatedis EgyptianimperialismunderRedaeges.Yetso plausibleandpersistentisthiskindofillusion coupledwiththedreadof"intervention"chargesand patheticfaithinU.N.actionthatallthestinghas beentakenoutofU.S.-U.K.resolution.
Alreadywearebeingtoldbytheprofessorsand expertsthat"unificationoftheMiddleEastcanonly bedelayed."Jordanisthekeytothesituationand itsstatushavingbeenweakenedbythecondoned revolutioninIraq,thelastlinkoftheArabUnion willsooncollapse.InthatcaseSaudiArabiaand thesheikdomsofKuwait,Oman,etc.,couldnotsurvive.AndindeeditmaynotbelongbeforeChehab askstheAmericanstogetoutofLebanon.ButvoluntarilyorbyrequesttheAmericansandBritishdare notgetout,howevermuchtheywantto.
Itisinconceivablethatwecannowcutourlosses andmakeafullretreat.Allthetalkabout"neutralisation"isdefeatestpropaganda.TheSoviet,of course.wouldagreetoitandoncethe"nationalist" influencewasestablishedsmashittobitswithas littlecompunctionastheydidHungary.
ThereisnochoicefortheWestbuttoimposeits willonEgyptandtheArabworldorseethempass underthehegemonyofRussia.Andwiththemwill gonotonlythevitalsuppliesofoilbutallAfrica. Itisaremarkablephenomenonthat,withthe Federalelectionsjustthreemonthsaway,anatmosphereofprofoundsweetnessandlightisevolving overtheEvatt-ChamberlainLabourParty.Indeed therehasarisenanairofpietythatisjusttoogood tobetrue.Dr.EvatthasbeenassuringtheHouse ofRepresentativesthatLabourmemberswhoagree tojoinwiththeCommunistPartyonunitytickets committedanoffenceagainsttheParty.Thatprinciple,hesaid,hadbeenlaiddownin1956,affirmed inBrisbaneandre-affirmedinAdelaide.Thosedecisionshadbeenmade,heaffirmed,becauseofthe "basicdifferencesandhostility"betweenhisParty andtheCommunists.Mr.Holt,theMinisterfor LabourandNationalService,veryrudelyreplied thatnosuchactionhadbeentakeninfiveStates overunitytickets,thatDr.Evatthadmadeoutlaws oftheIndustrialGroupsandsodestroyedtheeffectivenessoftheLabourPartytofightCommunist influence.

Whenheattemptedtoreplyhewasorderedtobe silent.Theofficials,conductingthetrialcalledfora showofhandsonthequestionofhisguilt.Thespectatorsraisedtheirhands,yelling,"Togaol!Togaol!"

BorninPiedmont,Italy,in1901,hewasordained asaFranciscanpriest,andsenttoChinain1928.He wasconsecratedasabishopin1940andappointed ArchbishopofChangshain1946.
Therewere34priestsand27Europeannunsinhis diocese.TheCommunistpersecutionbeganinJuly, 1949,whenRedtroopssurroundedthemedicalmissionstationandshotthemissionarypriest,Father Rolando,dead.
ThisactofterrorismwasthepreliminarytoasystematicintimidationoftheCatholicclergy.The priestswerepermittedtoholdservicesinthechurches butnotto'gooutvisitingtheirparishioners.Armed guardswerepostedinthestreets,supposedlyto"protect"thepriests,butactuallytocurbtheirfreedom ofmovement.
InOctober,1950,theCommuniststookoverthe Church,hospitalsandschools,andbeganindoctrinatingor"brain-washing"ChineseCatholiclaymen toturnthemagainsttheChurch,offeringinducements torenegadestoactasspiesandfalseinformers againsttheEuropeanpriestsandnuns.
InJanuary,1951,theCommunistsaskedtheArchbishopandallthepriestsinChangshatosignthe "patriotic"manifestoforan"independent"church inChina,whichimpliedseveringrelationswiththe Vatican.
Inaccordancewithhisobviousduty,theArchbishop preparedandprintedashortstatement,declaring thattheso-called"patriotic"manifestowasaheresy whichcouldnotbeacceptedbyCatholics.
Asacounter-move,theCommunistsbeganintimidatingCatholiclaymenbyputtinguppostersonthe churchwallsanddoors,urgingCatholicstoaccept the"reform"manifesto.
OnEasterSundaytheysetuptablesinfrontofthe churches,urgingallCatholicstosignabookstating thatthey."lovedtheircountry."Thisbookwascunninglyinterleavedwiththeheretical"reform"manifesto.
TheArchbishopinhisEastersermonwarnedthe peopletobewareofthiscrookedCommunisttrick.
OnApril27theCommunistshelda"People'sCourt" or"AccusationMeeting,"chargingtheArchbishop, andhisVicar-GeneralandProcurator-General,with "working,againsttheGovernment."
Thisbogus"trial"beganateighto'clockinthe morningandwentfor16hours,untilmidnight.All the"evidence"wasgivenintheabsenceoftheaccused andtheproceedingswerebroadcastontheradio.
Forthe"courtroom"theRedshadcommandeered thechapeloftheconventoftheWhiteSisters.This waspackedwithCommunistPartymembersand sympathisers,whocalledthemselves"thepeople."
Thenunsandmostofthepriestsofthediocesewere compelledtoattendthe"trial,"butwerenotallowed tospeakorgiveevidence
dysentery,butwasgivennomedicines.Hewastold thathewas"notworthy."
Securitypolicequestionedandarguedwithhint everyday,tryingtopersuadehimtosignthe"Free Church"manifesto.TheytoldhimthatalltheCatholicsinChangshahadrecanted,andthatallhispriests hadbeenexecuted.
Soldierswithbloodyswordsparadedoutsidehis cell,shouting,"Thisisthebloodofyourpriests.We haveexecutedthem!"
HisCommunisttormentorssaid,"Youhavebeen foundguiltyof120majorcrimes,alldeservingthe deathpenalty.Youhavekilled800childreninthe crphanage.ButifyourepentandsigntheFreedom Manifesto,youwillbeforgiven."
Thoughweakandill,theArchbishoptoldthem thathecouldnotsignanythingagainsthisfaithand hisconscience.
Attheendof12months,theSecurityPolicesaid tohim,"Nowthatyouhaverepented,theGovernment haveforgivenyou,andgenerouslyallowyoutoleave thecountry."
TheArchbishopwassoweakandillthattheCommunistshaddecidedtoreleaseanddeporthim,so thathewouldnotdieingaol.
HewasescortedbytraintotheborderatHong Kong.Hisclericalgarb,pectoralcrossandring werenotreturnedtohim.HearrivedatHongKong cladincooliegarbandwasputintohospitalthere fortwomonths,tobenursedbacktohealth.Hehad lost701b.inweight.
TheArchbishopwasovercomewithemotionwhen helearnedthathispriestshadnotbeenexecuted,as hehadbeentold.Fiveofthemhadbeenimprisoned, andtheotherseitherforciblyexpelledor"allowedto leavethecountry."

Inanycase,asaProtestant,heacceptstheprincipleofprivateinterpretationoftheBibleeverybit asmuchasthefundamentalistshecondemns;andhis interpretationoftheBible inhisownwayratherthan intheirs,withouttheguidanceoftheCatholicChurch andinthelightofherdefinedteachings,isjustas likelytogoastrayastheirs.
