Oneexamplewasthatof thebabyfoundunderthe rosebushatSt.Johnof Godhospital.Themother wasfound,andshenowhas herbaby,whoisgrowing upintoanicechild.

Therehavebeencases wheretheinterferenceof thepolicewomenhavebeen resentedbytheparentsof thechildren,butmostlythe parentsfeelthatthegirls arehelpingthechildrenand co-operate.

Somemothers,though, feelthatschool-agechildren canwellbelefttocome lhometoanemptyhouse,as theyareworkingtopayoff theirhomes,fridges,etc.

"It'sapitythatmothers feelthattheyhavetogo outtoworkfortheseand otherthings.Childrenare somuchmoreimportant," saidSergeantScott. Therewasonememorable occasionwhenaparentleft ababeofsixmonthsina lockedcar,withthetemperaturerisingrapidly abovethecentury.

Therewasnotevenanypretenceofmoralindignation atwhathappenedthere,butwithinthecourseofa weektheassassinswere"recognised"bytheSoviet andtheWestandsecurelyseatedintheUnited Nations.

WhenKhrushchevwithamightyrattleofsabres initiallyproposedasummitmeetinginsidetheUnited Nations,suchaget-togetherarousednoenthusiasm amongKhrushchev'sKremlinrivalsanditeffectively ignoredMaoTse-tung.FurthermoretheSovietCzar seemedtobelookingtoIndiatorepresentAsia-a proposalthatwouldfindnofavourinPeking.Red Chinaclearlyregardsitselfasanequalleaderwith RussiaofinternationalCommunismandKhrushchev clearlycannotaffordtomakeanotherTitointhe Eastandexposehiswholeflankthere.

MoreoverMaohasexertedprofoundinfluence amongtheRedsatellitesofEurope.Aftertherevolt inPoland,bothPolesandYugoslayslookedopenly toChinatopersuadetheSovietthatthetimehad comefora"liberalisation"ofpolicy.Maohimself inviteddomesticcriticisminChinauntilitcamein suchfloodthathewasforcedtoclampdownor imperilthewholetyrannyheheaded.Ittookthe HungarianrevolutiontobringKhrushchevtothesame viewpoint,butMaoclearlyhadanedgeonhimin foresight.

Concurrentlythetideofeventsisflowingagainst theWestintheMiddleEast.WithdrawalofsomeThecrisisinPolishChurch-Staterelations,brought AmericantroopsfromLebanonandthepromiseoftoaheadbythepoliceraidonthenationalMarian hri totalretirementbybothBritainandAmericain favourofaU.N.forcehasemboldenedNasserto hurryonwiththeformationofanArabFederacy throughoutthewholearea.Syriaisinthebagand SaudiArabiaandIraqarevirtually.there.Further NassertriumphsareforecastinLibyaandtheSudan. Furtherplotshavebeenuncoveredagainstthelifeof KingHussein,despitethepresenceofBritishtroops.

AllofthismakesnonsenceofPresidentEisenhower'stalkthatthe"functionofleadershipmust belongtotheArabStates."Allthatitcouldmean isNasser'sleadershipoverthewholeMiddleEast. Likewiseitmakesmonkeysoutoftheappeasing journalistswhosecatch-criesaboutArabnationalism ignorethefactthatwhatisbeingformulatedis EgyptianimperialismunderRedaeges.Yetso plausibleandpersistentisthiskindofillusion coupledwiththedreadof"intervention"chargesand patheticfaithinU.N.actionthatallthestinghas beentakenoutofU.S.-U.K.resolution.

Alreadywearebeingtoldbytheprofessorsand expertsthat"unificationoftheMiddleEastcanonly bedelayed."Jordanisthekeytothesituationand itsstatushavingbeenweakenedbythecondoned revolutioninIraq,thelastlinkoftheArabUnion willsooncollapse.InthatcaseSaudiArabiaand thesheikdomsofKuwait,Oman,etc.,couldnotsurvive.AndindeeditmaynotbelongbeforeChehab askstheAmericanstogetoutofLebanon.ButvoluntarilyorbyrequesttheAmericansandBritishdare notgetout,howevermuchtheywantto.

Itisinconceivablethatwecannowcutourlosses andmakeafullretreat.Allthetalkabout"neutralisation"isdefeatestpropaganda.TheSoviet,of course.wouldagreetoitandoncethe"nationalist" influencewasestablishedsmashittobitswithas littlecompunctionastheydidHungary.

ThereisnochoicefortheWestbuttoimposeits willonEgyptandtheArabworldorseethempass underthehegemonyofRussia.Andwiththemwill gonotonlythevitalsuppliesofoilbutallAfrica. IrresolutionhaslosttheWestmanyfriendsinthe Arabworld.butatleastTurkeyandIsraelremain andtheyarebothtoughpropositions.ItisquiteunrealisticandimmoraltothinkthattheZionistState, howeverartificialanddislikedcanbethrowntothe wolves.BritainandAmericacreateditandthey mustpreserveitwithandagainsttheArabworld.

Theoilissue,ofcourse,isall-important.Andthe Westisintheinvidiouspositionofhavingtochoose betweenretreatandthereceptionofoilonblackmail termsfromNasserorthewilltofightforitandthe grotesquemonopolieswhichnowcontrolit.Truly thecapitalistchickenshavecomehometoroost.But thereisnochoiceifwemeantosurvive.

Labour'sDeath-BedRepentance

sneatCzestochowa,hasbeenimpendingfor thepastyear.TheraidontheofficesoftheInstitute ofNationalVowsattheJasnaGoraMonasteryin CzestochowaonJuly21broughtforthdenunciations fromChurchspokesmanandcounterchargesfrom Governmentsources.Initswake,theCabinetMinisterinchargeofreligiousaffairs,JerzySztachelski, calledthetwobishopswhorepresenttheChurchin itsrelationswiththeGovernmenttoaspecialmeeting.ButthesymboloftheebbandflowofChurchStaterelationsremainsCzestochowa,wherethe ancienticonofOurLadyQueenofPolandisthe traditionalpilgrimagepointofallPolesandafocal pointofPoland'sreligiousandnationalheritage. ItwasatCzestochowaonAugust26,1956,that oneandahalfmillionpilgrimsgatheredinasilent butunmistakeableprotestagainstthethree-yearincarcerationofthePrimateofPoland,HisEminence StefanCardinalWyszynski.Thatrally,comingtwo monthsaftertherepressionofthe"breadandfreedom"riotsinPoznan,hadanelectriceffectonall Poland.Bymid-October,thePolishUnitedWorkers' (Communist)partyitselfhadundergonesuchpressuresthatWladyslawGomulka-whohadhimself beengaoledundertheStalinistregime-wasableto seizethehelmofthepartyandset.thenationona tackwhichgavethePolishpeoplefreedomsunheard ofinanyotherCommunist-rulednation.TheGomulkaregimeactedquicklytoturnfromthepersecutionofitsStalinistpredecessor.OnOctober28,1956, CardinalWyszynski,atlonglastreleasedfromcaptivity,waswelcomedhomeinWarsawbycheering thongsofhisfaithful.OneoftheCardinal-Primate's firstactswastomakethepilgrimagetoCzestochowa himself.

Thenationralliedunderthespiritualleadership ofCardinalWyszynskiandthepoliticalleadershipof Mr.Gomulka,andaChurch-Statecommissionbegan immediatelytotrytoloosentheimpedimentsthat theStalinistshadsetupagainsttheChurchatan acceleratingratesince1949.OnDecember7,1956, thecommissionwasabletoannounceanagreement underwhichreligiousinstructionwasrestoredtothe publicschools,Catholicpaperswereallowedtoresume publicationandchaplainsforhospitals,prisonsand thearmedforceswerepermitted.

IntheelectionsforthenewSejim,Poland'sParliament,inJanuary,1957,theepiscopateopenlyurged thepeopletogotothepollstosupportthesinglelist ofcandidatesputforwardbytheGovernment.

RiftsbegantoshowintheuneasytruceinMarch, 1957,whenthemainCommunistpartyorganhitat theChurchforthefirsttimesincetheOctoberrevolution.Itchargedchildrennotenrolledintherestoredreligionclasseswerebeingharassed.InMay. 1957,CardinalWyszynskijourneyedtoRometosee HisHoliness,PopePiusXIIandtherereceivedthe RedHatwhichhadbeenawaitinghimforthefour andahalfyears.

Meantimethere'areuneasystirringswithinthe sphereofinfluenceofRedChina.ThesecretarygeneralofSEATOhaswarnedofarecentRedbuildupthroughoutAsiawhichcouldleadtoopenaggressioninNorthKoreaorSouthChina.Sovietjet fightershave'appearedinincreasingnumbersinIndonesia.Thailandtroopshavebeenalertedonthe border.InNorthKoreathreeorfourtimesthe numberofChinesesoldiersallowedbytheU.N.truce arereportedalongthe28thparallel.Cambodiahas "recognised"RedChina.Pekingshowsvastlyincreasedairactivitywith22milesflyingtimeofForMOSS.

Itisaremarkablephenomenonthat,withthe Federalelectionsjustthreemonthsaway,anatmosphereofprofoundsweetnessandlightisevolving overtheEvatt-ChamberlainLabourParty.Indeed therehasarisenanairofpietythatisjusttoogood tobetrue.Dr.EvatthasbeenassuringtheHouse ofRepresentativesthatLabourmemberswhoagree tojoinwiththeCommunistPartyonunitytickets committedanoffenceagainsttheParty.Thatprinciple,hesaid,hadbeenlaiddownin1956,affirmed inBrisbaneandre-affirmedinAdelaide.Thosedecisionshadbeenmade,heaffirmed,becauseofthe "basicdifferencesandhostility"betweenhisParty andtheCommunists.Mr.Holt,theMinisterfor LabourandNationalService,veryrudelyreplied thatnosuchactionhadbeentakeninfiveStates overunitytickets,thatDr.Evatthadmadeoutlaws oftheIndustrialGroupsandsodestroyedtheeffectivenessoftheLabourPartytofightCommunist influence.

Hesaidthatinthiswaytheywouldnotwithdraw intothemselvesandclosethemselvesupwithinthe conventwalls,butthattheirunionwithGodwould broaden"accordingtothedimensionsoftheworld andtheredeemingworkofChristwhichisperpetuated intheChurch."

BogusTrialWithEveryIndignity

InOctober,1950,theCommuniststookoverthe Church,hospitalsandschools,andbeganindoctrinatingor"brain-washing"ChineseCatholiclaymen toturnthemagainsttheChurch,offeringinducements torenegadestoactasspiesandfalseinformers againsttheEuropeanpriestsandnuns.

InJanuary,1951,theCommunistsaskedtheArchbishopandallthepriestsinChangshatosignthe "patriotic"manifestoforan"independent"church inChina,whichimpliedseveringrelationswiththe Vatican.

Inaccordancewithhisobviousduty,theArchbishop preparedandprintedashortstatement,declaring thattheso-called"patriotic"manifestowasaheresy whichcouldnotbeacceptedbyCatholics.

Asacounter-move,theCommunistsbeganintimidatingCatholiclaymenbyputtinguppostersonthe churchwallsanddoors,urgingCatholicstoaccept the"reform"manifesto.

OnEasterSundaytheysetuptablesinfrontofthe churches,urgingallCatholicstosignabookstating thatthey."lovedtheircountry."Thisbookwascunninglyinterleavedwiththeheretical"reform"manifesto.

TheArchbishopinhisEastersermonwarnedthe peopletobewareofthiscrookedCommunisttrick.

OnApril27theCommunistshelda"People'sCourt" or"AccusationMeeting,"chargingtheArchbishop, andhisVicar-GeneralandProcurator-General,with "working,againsttheGovernment."

Thisbogus"trial"beganateighto'clockinthe morningandwentfor16hours,untilmidnight.All the"evidence"wasgivenintheabsenceoftheaccused andtheproceedingswerebroadcastontheradio.

Forthe"courtroom"theRedshadcommandeered thechapeloftheconventoftheWhiteSisters.This waspackedwithCommunistPartymembersand sympathisers,whocalledthemselves"thepeople."

Thenunsandmostofthepriestsofthediocesewere compelledtoattendthe"trial,"butwerenotallowed tospeakorgiveevidence

dysentery,butwasgivennomedicines.Hewastold thathewas"notworthy."

Securitypolicequestionedandarguedwithhint everyday,tryingtopersuadehimtosignthe"Free Church"manifesto.TheytoldhimthatalltheCatholicsinChangshahadrecanted,andthatallhispriests hadbeenexecuted.

Soldierswithbloodyswordsparadedoutsidehis cell,shouting,"Thisisthebloodofyourpriests.We haveexecutedthem!"

HisCommunisttormentorssaid,"Youhavebeen foundguiltyof120majorcrimes,alldeservingthe deathpenalty.Youhavekilled800childreninthe crphanage.ButifyourepentandsigntheFreedom Manifesto,youwillbeforgiven."

Thoughweakandill,theArchbishoptoldthem thathecouldnotsignanythingagainsthisfaithand hisconscience.

Attheendof12months,theSecurityPolicesaid tohim,"Nowthatyouhaverepented,theGovernment haveforgivenyou,andgenerouslyallowyoutoleave thecountry."

TheArchbishopwassoweakandillthattheCommunistshaddecidedtoreleaseanddeporthim,so thathewouldnotdieingaol.

HewasescortedbytraintotheborderatHong Kong.Hisclericalgarb,pectoralcrossandring werenotreturnedtohim.HearrivedatHongKong cladincooliegarbandwasputintohospitalthere fortwomonths,tobenursedbacktohealth.Hehad lost701b.inweight.

TheArchbishopwasovercomewithemotionwhen helearnedthathispriestshadnotbeenexecuted,as hehadbeentold.Fiveofthemhadbeenimprisoned, andtheotherseitherforciblyexpelledor"allowedto leavethecountry."
