Havingnoneedtoappeaseforeignopinionon Taoism,theCommunistshavemadenopretenceof "freedomofreligion"intheirattemptstodestroy theirfaith,andhavesimplylootedandburnedthe TaoisttemplesandexecutedthousandsofTaoist priestswithonlylocalpublicity,undertheusual fantasticexcusethatTaoistsare"agentsofAmerican Imperialism"or"counter-revolutionaries,plotting subversiveactivities."

TaoistsGoUnderground

Inreactiontothesebrutalattacks,theTaoistsin self-defencearebelievedtohavenoworganisedan extensive"underground"movement,orsecretsociety, toworkfortheoverthrowofCommunismbyconspiratorialmeans.Thisdefencemovement,likethe Taoistreligonitself,isentirelyChineseandwillprobablyprovetobeaverystubbornthornintheside oftheCommunistsastimegoeson.

Importantalsointhecomplicatedpictureofreligion inChinaistheMoslemfaith,whichhastenmillon followers,mainlyinthefar-westernislandprovinces, wherethetribesmenareraciallyakintoTurksrather thantotheChineseproper.

ThefaithofMohammedisafightingreligion,which hasclosecontactswiththeentireArabicworldof Islam.ItisfiercelyopposedtoMarxistatheism.

TheCommunistshavehadtotreatMoslemsin Chinawithextremecare.Everyattempttoconfiscatelangbelongingtothemosques,ortopersecute Moslemagentsas"imperialistagents"hasbeenmet witharmedlocalrebellion.

BythesemeanstheMoslemshavemaintained"re ligiousfreedom"-forthemselves.ButtheCommunistshaveformedabogus"ChinaIslamicAssociation," whichpretendstostudytheKoran"porntheMarxistLeninistpointofvl'ew."

Actually,theProtestantChristiansinChinahave merelybeenbypassedforthetimebeing,intheCommunistwaragainstreligion.IftheRedtacticssucceed, theProtestantmissionswillbe"moppedup"later, aftertheCatholicChurchhasbeenwipedout.

Christianity,likeeveryotherreligioninChina,is tobeslowlydestroyedbythelingerngDeathofa ThousandCuts.The"freedom"whichsomeProtestantmissionsenjoyhasnoguaranteeofpermanence. TheycanbedislodgedwhenevertheRedBureauof ReligiousAffairsdecidestodislodgethem,oneata time,oralltogether.

TwoMainLinesOfAttack

TheattackontheCatholicChurchhasbeentwopronged-firstlybydirectpersecution,andsecondly byfosteringthebogus"ChinesePatrioticCatholic Church,"subsidisedbytheCommunistsforthepurposeofsowingdissensionamongCatholicsandspreadingtheideasofMarxistAtheismthroughpretended "religious"channels.

OnFormosaIslandIinterviewedsixdifferent Catholicmissionarieswhohadbeenimprisoned,torturedandfinallyexpelledfromthemainlandofChina bytheCommunists.

Theirtestimonyleavesnodoubtofthenatureand ferocityofthepersecutiontheyenduredfortheir faith.

Theirexperiencesweretypicaloftheordealssufferedbymorethan6,000Catholicmissionariesincludingbishops,priests,clericalandlaybrothers andnuns-whohavebeenexpelledfromChinaby theRedssince1949.

First,IinterviewedthePapalInternuncio,HisExcellencyMonsignorAnthonyRiberi,theaccredited diplomaticrepresentativeoftheVatican.

BornatMonacoin1897,hewasordainedasa priestin1922,andappointedApostolicDelegateto ChinainJuly,1946.HisresidencewasatNanking, thecapitaloftheRepublicofChina.Heremained thereathispostaftertheNationalistGovernment movedtoFormosain1949.

Despiteallconventionsofdiplomaticimmunity, theComumsinstputhimunderarmedarrestfor79 days,thenexpelledhimfromChinainSeptember, 1951.

Theorchestra,evenifit didlackpunchinitsattack duringtheoverture,came tolifewhenitreceivedenthusiasticsupportfromthe othersideofthefootlights.

Thecostumeswerevery goodindeed,andthedecor withoutbeingundulyelaborate,wasquitesatisfactory.
