Afteritsbaptism,eachof theirchildrenwasconsecratedtotheSacredHeart andOurBlessedLady,and eneachFirstFridaytheAct etConsecrationwasrenewedbyallattheFamily Rosary.

LivingastheMeDonell familydid,inthecountry withoutthebenefitofCatholicschools,Mrs.McDonal preparedallherchildrenfor TheirFirstHolyCommunion.

Sowelldidsheprepare themthatonechild,now SisterMargaretMary,of Ayr(Qld.)wasallowedto makeherFirstCommunion attheageoffourandahalf.

Fourteenyearsago,inSeptember,1944, HsGracetheArchbishopannouncedthata missionstationfornativesintheArchdioceseofPerthwastobeestablishedatWanderingBrookandwastobenamed,"St. FrancisXavier'sNativeMission."

Inmakingtheannouncement,HisGracesaidthat foralongtimehehadfeltthatlittleornothingwas beingdoneforthefull-bloodedandhalf-castenatives inthesouthernportionoftheState,andthatfrom timetotimehehadlearnedthatmanyweredrifting intoGreatSoutherntownsandleadingidleanddissolutelives.

NegotiationswiththeStateGovernmentauthorities hadbeencompletedandaNativereservehadbeen gazettedsometenmilesnorthofthetownofWandering.

AttheinvitationoftheArchbishop,thecareofthe MissionwasundertakenbytheSocietyoftheCatholicApostolate(PallottineFathers).

Inthebeginningthehardshipsweremany;there werenoamenities.ThePallottinecommunitybegan theirworkwhilelivinginanoldwool-shed.

Today,underthedirectionofFatherAnthony Wellems,S.C.A.,FatherPeile,S.C.A.,twolayBrothers,andfiveSistersoftheSocietyoftheCatholicApostolate,80nativechildren,bothboysandgirls, arereceivingtendercareandcarefuleducation.

OntheMission,too,aretiredfarmerfromVictoria giveshisservicesfreeinthecauseofAlmightyGod. Unassuminginhislife,andnotseekingpublicity,he worksforthetreasurethatwillbehisinheaven.

OnAugust8(Friday)astreetappealwillbeheld tohelpraisefundsfortheMission.Collectorsare urgentlyneeded.Ifyoucanhelpatallpleasefillin thecouponbelow.

Suchiscertainlynotthe casewithRumanianPetre Munteanu-atenorwho hasamostpleasingvoice, coupledwiththeknowledge andabilitytouseitwith perfectcontrol.Aswell,the manisamusicianinthe fullmeaningoftheterm.

AttheCapitolTheatreon Fridaylastweheard"Constanze,Constanze"from"Il Seraglio"sungwiththat subtledelicacyofinsightthatMozartdemands.To follow ariathetenorsangan fromRigoletto"EllamifuRapita,"theaubade fromLalo's"LeRoud'Ys" and"Elucevanlestelle" fromTosca.

Thislastandtheencore demandedbytheapplaud- ingaudience-apiecefrom "Marta"weweregratified tofindfreeofthoseannoy- ingmannerismstenorsoften useinthesemuch-sungairs-theirperformancewasin perfecttaste.

Onecannotwritesoenthusiasticallyabouttheorchestra'swork.True,the overture(anElgararrangement,orrather,are-scoring ofaHandeloverture)was welldone,theopeninghad broad,sweepinglinesand thefuguewasclearcutand decisive.

TheplayingoftheDohnanyisuite,however,wasfor themostpartunimpressive. Intheandantewithvariationsweheardaverysweet stringtoneandthetoneof thesoloistsintheRomanza wasgenerallypleasingtoo, butthereweremomentsof untidinessintheaccompaniment.Thescherzo,onefelt couldhavebeenmore rhythmic.

Theconductor,John Farnsworth-Hallchosefor hissymphonySchubert'sNo. 9inCmajor,aptlytermed "TheGreat."Hiswasa good,solidreading,ifuninspiredandso,uninspiring.

DerbyLeprosariumtoday hasmademedicalhistory andhasbeenfeatured inmanybooksand journals.Originallypioneeredby thelate MotherAntonio,awoman pioneeroftheearlyMissionsintheNorthWest,the SistersofSt.JohnofGod livedintheearlydaysina largeunlinedgalvanisedironstructure,inatemperaturethattouchedthecenturyalmostdaily. Heretheyendearedthemselvestoallcreeds,and helpedcombatseveralepidemicsthatsweptthe towns.

HereMotherAlphonsus servedhernovitiate,and laterwassenttotheMother HouseinPerthtotakea fiveyears'nursingcourse.

OnherreturntoBroome, MotherAlphonsusvolunteeredforworkattheLeprosarium,andhasbeenstationedtherefor13years, nineofwhichshehasspent astheSuperior.

InthefirstWorldWar,

whenEnglandandFrance declaredwaronGermany, notspecificallyreligious, butpurelynationalinterestswereatstake,with bothCatholicsandnonCatholicsengagedonboth sides;andthedecisionto engageinhostilitiesrested withtherespectivegovernmentswithoutreferenceto theChurch.Butthenations engaged,ofcourse,were professingChristiansinone formoranother. Q.:Ifwarassuchcanbe justified,couldbothsides haveclearconsciences?

R.:Warassuchisalways aphysicaldisasterandcan, therefore,beregardedas tolerableonlyasthelesser oftwoevils.Itisnever lawfultoengageinwarunlessanationcanexpectto sufferstillmoreserious

ThelayingofafoundationstoneforaCathedral isaveryrareevent,andthefactthatweareto witnesssuchaceremonyinDarwinisasuresign thatspiritualdevelopmentiskeepingpacewiththe morereadilyrecognisedmaterialprogressthatIs beingrecordedonallfronts,throughouttheNorthern Territory.

Itwastostressthisbalanceddevelopmentthatwe haveselectedthefoundationstonefromRumJungle. Thefoundationstonewillserveasalinkbetween thematerialandthespiritual.

Withtellingsymbolismitwilluniteanimportant centreofmaterialprogress,theopen-cuturanium mineatRumJungle,fromwhichitwasextracted, withwhatwillbethemostimportantcentreof spiritualactivity,theMemorialCathedral,ofwhich itformsthefoundation.

Theparabolicarchisaformofarchthatwasnot usedinpreviousperiodsofarchitecture,presumably becauseitsconstructiondemandsaveryaccurate estimationofstressesandstrains.Thiswasmade possibleonlybymodernengineeringtechnique.The seriesofparabolicarchesformsIwouldsay,themost distinctiveandstrikingfeatureof-thecathedral design.

CathedralIsPrayerInStone

Itseemsratherstartlingatfirstsightthatwecan prayinstone.Butamoment'sreflectionwillshow thatthereisaveryrealsenseinwhichwecando preciselythat.Letmeputittoyouinthisway: AchurchorcathedralisabuildingnotonlyIN which,butalsoBYwhichorWITHwhichweworship andpaythehonourtoGod.

Thistwofoldaspectofthematterisnotalways adequatelyrecognised.Everyonerealises,ofcourse, thataChurchisaplaceINwhichtoworship.We expectthatitsdesignwillbesuchastoprovidea reverentatmosphereforallwhoenter,helpingthem toraisetheirmindsandheartstoGodinprayer.

Butthereistheotheraspect,too,andIthinkitis animportantone:Theactualprocessofconstructing achurchorcathedralisinitselfanactofworship. BytheverybuildingwecanhonourandpraiseGod.

ThatiswhytheGothicCathedralsofEuropewer oftenreferredtoasprayers-in-stone.Everyoneandthereweremany-whohadapartinconstructingsuchcathedrals,sharedalsointhecorporateact ofworship.

WecanmostcertainlyregardourMemorial Cathedralasaprayer-in-stone,quarriedfromthe cliffsoftheharbourclosetoLarrakeyahArmyBarracks.Allwhohelptobuilditwillbeaddingtheir personalpartinthegrandconcertedprayer-in-stone.

Firstandforemostcomesthearchitectandthe builder.Alltheirtalentsthatgointothejobgive honourandglorytoGod.Thesameappliestoeveryonewhoco-operateswiththeminanycapacity.

Inthisrespect,itisperhapsnotsomuchwhatwe doorwhatwegivethatreallycounts.Theimportant thing-thethingthatreallyennoblesouractionsand enrichesourgiftsisthesacrificethatpromptsthem, orthelovethatgoeswiththem.

WehaveChrist'sownwordforthis.Whenwatching thecrowdsofpeoplemakingtheirgifttothetemple Hepickedoutforspecialcommendationthewidow, whogavehermite.Shegaveallshehad.Hersacrificewasthegreatest,andnodoubt,herlovethebest.

FromMassToSlitTrench

Ofspecialsignificanceherealso,arethoseother wordsofChrist:"Wherethytreasureisthereisthy heartalso."PutyourtreasureintothehouseofGod, intheformofsacrificesandlove-tokens,andyour heartwillbetherealso-intherightplace-centred onGod.Asyourtreasuredrawsyourheartwithit towardsGod,soyourgiftbecomesaprayer.

Eversince1942,whenthenewcathedralwasfirst mooted,ithasbeenplannedasaWarMemorial.I cannotthinkofanymoreappropriateplacetohave anAustralianWarMemorialthaninDarwin.During thewarDarwinwasthetargetareaofAustraliaand receiveditsbaptismoffire.Theoldchurch,which thecathedralwillreplace,stillshowssignsofthe shatteringitreceived,whenthetroopswerefrequentlyforcedtoleavethechurchduringMassand fileintoslittrenchesnearbyatthesignalfromair raidalarms.Portionofthelandonwhichthecathedral willstandwasoccupiedbyalargeAmericanAirforce campduringthewar.

Further,Iwouldsaythereisnomorefittingtype ofwarmemorialthanacathedralorchurch,forin suchamemorialshrinewecanbesthonourthose whofellinbattleandmostadequatelyfulfilthewords ofthefamiliarode-"Atthegoingdownofthesun andinthemorning,wewillrememberthem."

ForsuchanenterpriseweneedthehelpofGod's sustaininghandateverystage,forasthePsalmist remindsus:"UnlesstheLordbuildthehouse,they labourinvainwhobuildit,"

Thecathedraldesign,too,isverymuchinkeeping withthespiritofprogress,thatisabroadinthe territory.Anantiquated,stereotypedstylewould seemaltogetheroutofplace.Whiletheratherunique contemporarydesign,thatwehaveespeciallypreparedforDarwinoffersaninspirationforthefuture; itisanexpressionoffaithinthepossibilitiesthat heahead.

TheInternationalFederationofLittleSingerswas foundedin1945byMgr. FernandMaillet,directorof theLittleSingersofParis. Itspurposeistopromote mutualunderstandingand friendshipbetweenthe childrenoftheworld htruoghmeansofsong.

Hediedinthehospital herejustsixdaysafter beingstrickenbyanintestinalblockage.Anavid swimmerthroughouthis life,andanotedoarsmanin hisyouth,hehadbeen swimmingonlyaweekbeforehisdeath.

Oneofthemostnotable contemporary Catholic poets,Mr.Noyeswasborn inStaffordshire,England,in 1880.Hebeganwriting versewhileatExeterCollege,Oxford,andpublished hisfirstvolumeattheage of22.

Marriedin1907toGarnettDaniels,thedaughter ofaU.S.Armycolonel,Mr. NoyeswenttoAmericain 1913tolectureinBoston. HeheldanhonorarydoctoratefromYale,andwas visitingprofessorofEnglishatPrincetonfrom1914 to1925.

Thepoet'sfirstwifedied in1926,andhewasreceivedintotheChurchin1927. Thesameyear,hemarried therecentlywidowedMrs. MaryMayneWeld-Blundell, who,withtheirsonand twodaughters,survives him.

Mr.Noyesmadeanoted defenceofhisFaithina lettertotheSpectator, Londonreview,in1930.In it,hesaid:
