OrganisedbytheCatholicMissionarySociety, whichworksfortheconversionofEngland,thepurposeoftheconferencewast9bringtogetherthose priestsmostconcernedwiththisapostolatesothey couldpooltheirexperiences.
Speakersatthemeetingemphasisedthatpersonal contactswithnon-CatholicsforthepurposeofinterestingthemintheFaithshouldbemadeprimarilyby thelaity.Thisisespeciallytrue,itwaspointedout,of FatherAedenMcGrath,Columbanmissionerwho isaLegionofMaryorganiserinEngland,toldthe conferencethatvisitsmadebylegionariestononCatholicsarenotresentedbutwelcomed.Thenation'speople,headded,arehungaryforreligion.

Thelifeoftheseearly dwellersintheGardenof Marywasindeedahidden one,anditwasonlyduring thetimeoftheCrusades thatChristiansfromthe Westfirstcameincontact withtheanchoritesof MountCarmel.
Theirlifeofprayerand penanceandtheirdevotion toOurLadyofMountCarmelappealedtoanumber ofCrusaders,severalof whom,inthecourseoftime, cametolivewiththedevout monks.Aswastobeexpected,Westerninfluence graduallymadeitselffelt.
Asearlyas1155,aformer Crusader,St.Berthold,came fromLimoges,inFrance,to settlewithacommunityof
Uptillthisdate,the monkshadregulatedtheir lifemoreorlessinaccordancewithancienttraditions;butsinceanumber ofmen,borninFranceand Germany,hadjoinedthe monksonMountCarmel, somedifficultieshadarisen, aswellassomedoubtsconcerningtheobligationsand dutiesimpliedbytheirstate oflife.
13thCenturyRule
ThiscausedSt.Brocard torequestfromthePatriarchofJerusalem,St.Albert,anofficialwritten Rule, valentthusresolvingthepredoubtsanddifficulties.ThisRule,obtainedin 1209fromSt.Albert,andto whichPopeHonoriusHI gavehisapprobationin 1226,haseversinceremainedthebasisuponwhich Carmelitespiritualityhas rested.
Itprovedthesignalfor considerabledevelopmentin Palestine.Soon,fifteennew communitiesadoptedthis Ruleandlivedunderthe obedienceofthePriorof MountCarmel,wholater receivedtheWesterntitle of"Prior-General."
TheSaracens,devastating theHolyLandandmurderingmanyChristians,forced theCarmelitestoseek refugeinEurope;hence, after1200,manysettlements weremadeinFrance,Cyprus,andSicily,inEngland, ScotlandandIreland,in SpainandItaly,aninthe LowCountries.
InEuropehowever,a newpersecutionthreatened them.TheCouncilofLateran,in1215,hadforbidden

ManyecclesiasticalauthoritiesinEurope,unfavourablydisposedtowardsthe strangemonksfromPalestinewhocontinuedtospread inever-increasingnumbers, demandedthatRomeshould enforcethedecisionsofthe LateranCouncilanddeclare theCarmeliteOrderillegal.
InvaindidtheCarmelitesprotestthattheirOrder hadbeeninexistencein Palestineformanycenturies,andthattheirinstitutionhadreceivedtheformal approbationofthePatriarch ofJerusalembefore1215. Thesuppressionofthe Orderseemedinevitable.
Inthishourofdirest peril,OurLadyofMount CarmelpowerfullyintervenedonbehalfofherOrder.
Aferventloverofthe tenderMotherofMount Carmel,St.SimonStock sufferedandlabouredincessantlytosaveandprotecttheOrderinitsnew andoftenhostilesurroundingsinEurope.Heknewthe BlessedVirginwouldnot failhim.
Marvellouslywashisconfidenceinhertoberewarded.OntheeveningofJuly 16,1251,theSaintwaspouringouthissoulbeforeGod, imploringtheassistanceof theMotherofCarmelina touchingprayerwhichis nowfamiliartoallthose whoweartheBrownScapular:

Soonafterwards,thefifth Prior-General,BlessedAlan theBriton,conveneda GeneralChapter(1237)on MountCarmel,atwhich massemigrationfromPalestinetoEuropewasauthorised.However,hissuccessor,St.SimonStock,elected attheChapteratAylsford, England,in1245,wastoencountermanydifficulties.
Inspiteofheavenlyinterventionandpapalprotection oppositiontotheOrderincreased.Meanwhile,the processofadaptationto Westernconditionscaused muchanxietyamongstthe Carmelitesthemselves:some wantedtomaintainthe stricthermeticallifeinits fullvigour;others,rapidly growingintoamajority, werequitepreparedtofollowRome'swishesandtake anactivepartintheapostolicworkoftheMendicant Orders.
AppearingtoPopeHonoriusIII,sheurgedhimto taketheCarmeliteOrder underhisprotection.This hesubsequentlydid,bygivinghissolemnapprobation totheCarmeliteRuleon January30,1226.Hissuccessor,PopeGregoryXI,reaffirmedthisdecision,ina Bulladdressed,in1229,to the"PrioroftheHermitsof BlessedMaryofMountCarmel." Thesewerewillingtosacrificepartoftheirtraditionalwayoflife,byexchangingtheirstrictlycontemplativelifeforamoreor lessmixedlife,provided thatthecontemplativelife shouldremainthefoundationandprincipalpartof theirreligiouslife.
FlowerofCarmel,blossomingVine, Splendour of Heaven, Motherdivine: Noneliketothee. MotherofMeekness,peerlessandfair, ThychildrenofCarmel savefromdespair, OStaroftheSea. Itwasatthismoment thatMary,amidstmany angels,appearedtotheaged Saint.Holdingouttowards himtheBrownScapularof theOrdershesaid: "Receive,mybelovedson, thisScapularofthyOrder; itisthespecialsignofmy favour,whichIhaveobtainedfortheeandforthy childrenofMountCarmel. Whoeverdiesclothedwith thisHabitshallbepreservedfrometernalfire.Itisthe badgeofsalvation,ashield intimeofdanger,apledge ofpeace,andofmyspecial protectionuntotheendpf time."
Aftergivingthisfamous ScapularPromise,OurLady assuredSt.SimonStock thattheOrderwouldnot succumbtopersecution.She thendisappeared. ThismiraculousinterventionoftheMotherofCarmel provedeffective.Afew monthslater,onJanuary13, 1252,PopeInnocentIV issuedaLettergivingprotectiontotheCarmelites againsttheiradversaries.
Yetanotherblessingwas tofollow.ManyChristian princestookthehermitsof MountCarmelundertheir patronageand,asatokenof gratitude,theOrdergave themtherighttowearthe ScapularofOurLady-an honourpiouslyreceivedby thenobility,amongstwhom maybeespeciallymentionedSt.LouisofFrance,King EdwardIIofEngland,and Henry,DukeofLancaster. Gradually,theprivilegeof wearingtheScapularwas extendedtoalltruelovers

JohnMacarthurwasborndousworkinthisfieldatPlymouthinEnglandinthewoolindustry-andit 1763. isthroughhisworkthat AsaLieutenantinthethewoolofourcountryisof N.S.W.Corps,hecameoutsuchgoodquality. toAustraliawithhiswifeSoonMacarthurhadanandchildinNovember,otherdisagreementwith 1789,attheageof22years.
WhilestillatPlymouth, Macarthurquarrelledwith theCaptainandfoughta duel,fortunatelyneither wasinjured,thematterwas husheddpandthevoyage continuedwithoutfurther incident.
InSydney,Macarthur foundmomentaryfavour withGovernorHunter,but thisfierytemperedman nevercouldlivehappily withoutaquarrel;anda disagreementoccurred.As aresult,Macarthurwasput outofanypublicposition buthestillremainedinthe Corps. Asheheldnopublic positionsnow,Macarthur, tofillintime,beganraisingsheep.In1796heimportedsheepfromtheCape andmanagedtoobtain
Hunter.Theybothwrote lettersofcomplaintabout eachothertoEngland,but Macarthur'sevidentlyarrivedfirst,andthushesecuredHunter'srecall.
GovernorKingsucceeded Hunterandwhileheheld governorship, Macarthur wasinvolvedinaduelfor whichhewascommitted fortrialinEngland.King hadsentwithhimalong listofaccusationswhichin amysteriousmannerdisappearedbeforeMacarthur reachedEngland.
Seeinghewasalreadyin troubleJohnMacarthur adoptedmoreresourceful methodsandsoonwason thebestoftermswiththe ColonialOffice.
WhileinEngland,hegot somesheepfromtheRoyalpeopleinterestedinwool. flockatKew,whichheHereturnedtoAustraliain crossbredwithsomemer-June,1805,andsuchwas inosfromSpain. hisluckthatinsteadofpunMacarthurdidtremen-ishment,hehadreceived morelandforsheepfarming.Atthisstagehehad toseverhimselffromthe N.S.W.Corpsandsowas abletodevotehimselfentirelytosheep.
