Seldom,ifever,hasth 50-year-oldconventhad suchacolourful,crowded andsuccessfulseriesof events,linkingtogether, withgoldenthreads,the Sistersandtheirpupils, presentandpast.
In1908,BishopTorres, NewNorcia'ssecond Bishop,openedacollegefor CatholicWestAustralian girlsinthepeculiarlyCatholicatmosphereofthethen isolatedSpanishBenedictinesettlementatNew Norcia.
Itwasacourageousgesturein1908.Glanceback totheW.A.of50yearsago. Surelythisnewfoundation, "inthebush,"82ninesfrom Perth,15milesfromthe nearestrailwaystationtook highcourageandlong vision.

ThiscausedSt.Brocard torequestfromthePatriarchofJerusalem,St.Albert,anofficialwritten Rule, valentthusresolvingthepredoubtsanddifficulties.ThisRule,obtainedin 1209fromSt.Albert,andto whichPopeHonoriusHI gavehisapprobationin 1226,haseversinceremainedthebasisuponwhich Carmelitespiritualityhas rested.
Itprovedthesignalfor considerabledevelopmentin Palestine.Soon,fifteennew communitiesadoptedthis Ruleandlivedunderthe obedienceofthePriorof MountCarmel,wholater receivedtheWesterntitle of"Prior-General."
TheSaracens,devastating theHolyLandandmurderingmanyChristians,forced theCarmelitestoseek refugeinEurope;hence, after1200,manysettlements weremadeinFrance,Cyprus,andSicily,inEngland, ScotlandandIreland,in SpainandItaly,aninthe LowCountries.
InEuropehowever,a newpersecutionthreatened them.TheCouncilofLateran,in1215,hadforbidden

Soonafterwards,thefifth Prior-General,BlessedAlan theBriton,conveneda GeneralChapter(1237)on MountCarmel,atwhich massemigrationfromPalestinetoEuropewasauthorised.However,hissuccessor,St.SimonStock,elected attheChapteratAylsford, England,in1245,wastoencountermanydifficulties.
Inspiteofheavenlyinterventionandpapalprotection oppositiontotheOrderincreased.Meanwhile,the processofadaptationto Westernconditionscaused muchanxietyamongstthe Carmelitesthemselves:some wantedtomaintainthe stricthermeticallifeinits fullvigour;others,rapidly growingintoamajority, werequitepreparedtofollowRome'swishesandtake anactivepartintheapostolicworkoftheMendicant Orders.
AppearingtoPopeHonoriusIII,sheurgedhimto taketheCarmeliteOrder underhisprotection.This hesubsequentlydid,bygivinghissolemnapprobation totheCarmeliteRuleon January30,1226.Hissuccessor,PopeGregoryXI,reaffirmedthisdecision,ina Bulladdressed,in1229,to the"PrioroftheHermitsof BlessedMaryofMountCarmel." Thesewerewillingtosacrificepartoftheirtraditionalwayoflife,byexchangingtheirstrictlycontemplativelifeforamoreor lessmixedlife,provided thatthecontemplativelife shouldremainthefoundationandprincipalpartof theirreligiouslife.
FlowerofCarmel,blossomingVine, Splendour of Heaven, Motherdivine: Noneliketothee. MotherofMeekness,peerlessandfair, ThychildrenofCarmel savefromdespair, OStaroftheSea. Itwasatthismoment thatMary,amidstmany angels,appearedtotheaged Saint.Holdingouttowards himtheBrownScapularof theOrdershesaid: "Receive,mybelovedson, thisScapularofthyOrder; itisthespecialsignofmy favour,whichIhaveobtainedfortheeandforthy childrenofMountCarmel. Whoeverdiesclothedwith thisHabitshallbepreservedfrometernalfire.Itisthe badgeofsalvation,ashield intimeofdanger,apledge ofpeace,andofmyspecial protectionuntotheendpf time."
Aftergivingthisfamous ScapularPromise,OurLady assuredSt.SimonStock thattheOrderwouldnot succumbtopersecution.She thendisappeared. ThismiraculousinterventionoftheMotherofCarmel provedeffective.Afew monthslater,onJanuary13, 1252,PopeInnocentIV issuedaLettergivingprotectiontotheCarmelites againsttheiradversaries.

Ontheotherhand,the sinnerwhogoestoconfessionknowsquitewellthat nopriestcouldgivehim permissiontosinagain,and couldnotgiveevenavalid absolutiontoonewhowas notpersonallyresolvednot tosinagain.
Itmaybethat,despitethe goodresolutionatthetime ofconfession,owingto severetemptationsandthe forceofingrainedhabits, thesinnerfallsagainlater on.Buthedoesnotdoso becauseofhispreviousconfession,orbecauseheknows thatafutureconfessionwill bepossible.

WhilestillatPlymouth, Macarthurquarrelledwith theCaptainandfoughta duel,fortunatelyneither wasinjured,thematterwas husheddpandthevoyage continuedwithoutfurther incident.

Thechargeforwhichhe wasfinallysentenced-a technicalviolationofcurrencyregulations-wasfirst madetwoyearsafterhisarrest,whentheRedscould notmaketheirorginalspy chargestick,FatherWagner said.
