ThereisnosinglenationinCentralandSouth Americawhichhasenoughpriestsfortheneedsof thefaithful.Itisobviousthat,asthingsare,the clergycannothopetocopewiththesituationand theChurchmustsurelysufferasaresult.TheU.S. provincesofsomeofthereligiousordersarealready helpingtoeasethesituationbyprovidingpriests forvariousBishops.Amongstothers,theDivineWord Fathers,theFriarsMinor,theJesuits,theOblatesof MaryImmaculate,theRedemptorists,theColumban Fathers,theCapuchinsandtheMaryknollFathers havepriestsfromtheirU.S.provincesindiocesesin CentralandSouthAmerica.

Evenwiththishelp,however,thesituationisso seriousthattobringLatinAmericatothestandard ofAfrica-onepriestforevery1,500Catholics-over 70,000priestswouldbeneededimmediatelyinadditiontothosealreadyworkingthere.Toputitin anotherway,ifallthepriests,secularandreligious, nowworkinginCandaandU.S.A.weretobetransferredtoLatinAmerica,therewouldstillbeashortagethere.

Itisevidentthatthereisinequalityinthedistri= butionofprieststhroughouttheworld.Somecountrieshaveenoughprieststosupplytheirimmediate needs,othershavetoofewandcannotpossiblyserve thefaithfuladequately.Andwithinnationaland territorialboundariesthesameinequalityissometimes evident.Somediocesesinthesamecountryare

Itistobehopedthattheareasoftheworldwhich arenowshortofpriestswilleventuallybeinapositiontosupplythegreaterpartoftheirneedsbymeans ofcandidatesforthepriesthoodobtainedfromtheir ownranks.Butinthemeantime,inadditiontoa vigorousandsustainedcarnQaignforvocations amongsttheyoungmenofthoseareas,itissurely opoprtunetosuggestsomemethodofsharingthe priestsoftheworld.Therearesomediocesesso amplyprovidedwithpriests,andsomereligious orderssimilarlysoprovided,thattheycould,without appreciablylesseningtheirapostolate,consentto allowsomeoftheirprieststohelpinplacesnotso wellsupplied.Thereareparishes,particularlyin congestedareas,whereoneormorepriestscouldbe spared.
