However,therewasnot muchanti-clericalismduringthefirstthreecenturies ofpersecutionwhenthe Churchwassimplyan"outlawedsociety"ofreligious people.
Withtheconversionof the,EmperorConstantinein the4thcentury,things changed.AChristianworld order,or"Christendom," thenbecamepossible,with rulersandruledalikein variousStatesacknowledgingChristianityastheofficialreligion.
Temporalrulershadno spiritualjurisdiction. The Churchhadsupremeauthorityinmattersoffaith andmorals;andrulerswere assubjecttothatauthority asweretheirpeople.
Moreover, wheretheinterestsoffaithandmorals demandedit, theChurch hadatleastindirectauthorityinthecivilorder. Needlesstosay, themost formidableproblemsarose; andthewisestmeninevery centuryfounditdifficultto strikethebalancebetween thespiritualandtemporal, thesacredandthesecular.
Hencearosetheage-long rivalrybetweentheWesternChurchandthetemporalPrincesofChristendom.Alladmittedthe
principles;buttheapplicationofthoseprinciplesin particularcaseswasopento alltheinherentweaknesses ofman,whetherowingto mentallimitationsorwarpedpassions.
Thefaultswerenotall ononeside.Churchmen bothmadehonestmistakes andwereattimesguiltyof dishonestexcesses, yielding tosecularambitions.
KingsandPrincesprotested,andtheirpeopletook sides,somebeingpro-clerical,othersanti-clerical.
ModernGrowth
Theanti-clericals,rulers andruledalike, werealso, ofcourse, swayedbyhuman passionsandambitions; andifattimestheywere defendingalegitimateright againstclericalusurpation, asoftenasnottheywere inthewrong, chafingunder theexerciseofalawful spiritualauthoritywhich theyfoundirksomebecause itforbadethemtodowhat theyoughtnottodo, but whattheywantedtodo.
Anti-clericalism,always latentlypresent,flaredup incrisisaftercrisisin history;anditwasimmeasurablyintensifiedbythe extremeofreligiousindividualismintroducedbythe Protestantreformers,and theemergenceofnationalitywiththebreakingupof theWesternEmpireinto separatedStates.
Thencametheso-called "AgeofReason"usheredin bytheFrenchRevolutionin the18thcentury,followed bytheanti-religiousand necessarilyanti-clerical propagandaofCommunism inourowndays.These haveprofoundlyaffectedall countries.
ButIhavebeenconcernedheremerlywithtracing,inthebriefestpossible way,thetensionsbetween ChurchandStates,between clergyandlaity,fromthe earliesttimes;andtheresultantanti-clericalismaffectingonlyasmallminorityatfirst,butbecoming morewidespreadastime wenton.
