FriendlyRivalry

Withtheformationof thisgroup,theveryessentialfriendlyrivalrybetween thegroupssprangintobeing,notonlywithvisits,but withcompetition.St.John Boscoisthepatronsaintof theScarboroughgroup.

Thisgroupisthelastone tobeformedsofar,itwas startedoffbyFatherRyan, O.M.I.andhehasbeenits chaplaineversince.

Atthelastmeetingofthe Scouters'Council,Fremantle hadshownthatbothits groupshaddoubledtheir numberofexperienced Scouters.

Greatthingsthenareexpectedfromtheportgroups. Inevitablythepatronofthe parishchurchwaschosen aspatronforthisseascout groupaswell,St.Patrick.

Mrs.Sheedsaidshehad noticedthatthetitleofher talk,"TheIntellectual Apostolate,"seemedtointimidatesomepeople.Takingtheword"intellectual," shesaidthatagreatmany peoplewererathernervous abouttheconditionoftheir minds.Chestertononce said:"Itissaidthattravel broadensthemindbutyou musthavethemind."

Whenpeopleheardofthe intellectualapostolate,they begantoaskthemseves ratheraboutmindsintwo directions.Theywondered aboutthemindsoftheir friendsbutwhatwasworse theywonderedabouttheir own.

Manypeoplesaidfrom timetotime:"Iamnotthe leastbitintellectual,"or"I haven'tgotamind."They mightaswellsay,"Ihaven't gotasoul,"themindbeing oneofthefacultiesofthe soul-thepowertothink.

Inthecatechismthey learnttheymustknow,love andserveGod,andhow theycoulddothatwithout usingtheirminds,itwas impossibletosay.

Althoughtheyhadminds, theycouldletthemdieof neglect.Iftheydidnot feedandexercisethebody itwoulddie.Foodand exercisewerenecessaryfor thebodyandtheywere everybitasnecessaryfor themind.

Mrs.Sheedsaidthatifall theyoungpeopleleftschool witharealcapacityfor reading,thewholeoftheir intellectuallifewouldbe different.

"StateOfSiege"

Peoplewerealsoalarmed attheword"Apostolate" foraverydifferentreason.

Catholicswereemerging outofabadperiodof Catholichistory.Herfather WilfredWardcalledita "stateofsiege."Ifacity wasundersiegethemen hadtofight.

Peoplewerenotengaged inintellectualworks.They werefartoobusyrepelling theenemyandthatwas howCatholicsdeveloped aftertheReformation.

Itwassometimessaid thatthebusinessofthelaity wasto"prayandtopay." Thatcouldnotbesaidtoday. AfteralltheyhadPope afterPopeurgingCatholic Action,theworkofthe laityintheapostolate.

"LookatChurchhistory asawhole,andespecially attheearlyhistoryofthe Church,"saidMrs.Sheed.

"Ifyoudoyouwillvery soonrealisethattheChurch fromthebeginningleant

InhisEpistlestothe Romanstherewasagreat listofhisfellowlabourers and,outofthose,therewere manywomen,sotheremust havebeenalotoflaity. Likewise,themartyrs werenotcontenttowitness withtheirdeaths.Theywitnessedwiththeirminds.

Readinginthetruesenseiscomplementaryto,and almostidenticalwith,education.Withoutiteducation cannotproceed.Forthegreatestthoughtofmankind isinbooksandthegreatestlivingteachercandono higherthingintheintellectualorderthanteachhis pupiltoread.Noweducationinitsmostfundamental conceptionshouldfitamanforliving;itshouldseek toestablisharightrelationbetweenmanandeverythingthatexists.Henceitisaparadoxthatone cannotfullyknowanythinguntiloneknowseverything;inotherwords,thepartsderivetheirsignificancefromtheirplaceinthewholeschemeofthings.

Forthetotalviewofthings,whichistheessence ofeducation,onemustknowGod.Initsfailuretodo thisthesecularistsystemimplicitlyconfessesthat educationofitselfisimpossible.Onecannotomit God,forHeistheonebeingthatexplainsthetotality ofbeing.Further,allthingswerenotonlymadeand sustainedbyGod,butalsoforGod.Thatfactgives themtheirpurposeinlifeandtherelationofeach thingtoalltheothers.Andthequestionofthepurposeoflifeisquiteprimarytoeducation,for,without it,howcanoneproposetofitaman'smindforliving?
