Butinatleastoneinstancehemisreportedwhat wassaidtohimbyAlfred Noyes,and,asthelatter clearlyshows,heleanedon afrailreedwhenheplaced hisfaithintheopinionand memoryofSerjeantSulli-van,who,apparently,cannotevenrememberhowold heis.

Therecanbenocomparisonbetweenthesensationalismofthejournalistand thelucidbiographyofa manwhoknewCasement personallyandwholived throughtheeventswhichhe describes.

Unfortunately,Mr.MacColl'sbookhasayear's start,andamoreattractive dustjacket.

OnMay3,1956,inthe HouseofCommons,during adebateonthepapersconcerningRogerCasement, Mr.EmrysHughesstated thatthepersonresponsibleforcirculatingthecopiesof hisallegeddiaries"wasMr. AlfredNoyes.

Inaletterto"TheTimes" onMay17,Mr.Noyesemphaticallydeniedthecharge. Hesaidthat,contraryto whatMr.ReneMacCollhas recentlystatedinhisbook, atypedcopyofwhatpur- portedtobeanextractfrom thediaryofRogerCasementwasplacedonhis deskintheForeignOffice onadayin1916andwas hastilywithdrawnafterhe hadbeengivenafewminutestolookatit.

Thistypedcopyofthe famous"diary"wasvouchedforasanauthenticextractfromabookinCasement'sownhandwriting, saysNoyes,andhehadno reasontodoubtthegood faithoftheHomeOffice, whichwasresponsiblefor itscirculation.

He foundhas,however,since thattheHomeOffice repeatedlyofferedthedocumentstotheAssociated Press,whichrejectedthem onethicalgroundsbecauseauthenticationwasrepeat- edlyrefused.

Evenbeforethefirstmodernmissionarysetfooton thesoilofareopenedJapaninthe19thcentury, anotherpagewasaddedtothehistoryofMarian devotionhere.FatherFourcade,whoneverreached Japan,composedaprayerdedicatingJapantothe ImmaculateHeartofMarywhilesailinginthenearby Ryukyusislandsin1844.Thisactofdedicationwas solemnlyreaffirmedbytheJapanesehierarchyin 1948.

Priorto1910,20cureswererecordedandattributedtotheintercessionofOurLadyofLourdes.Recently,anothersuchcurewasassessedtoherbyDr. Nagai,avictimoftheNagasakiatomicbomb.

Inhisbook,RosarionoKusari(RosaryChain), Dr.Nagaisaidhismottowas"TheRosaryinevery place,theRosaryforeverything."Thebookwas eagerlyreadinJapan.

Dr.Nagaidiedofradiationsickness.

AnotherfamousdevoteeofMarywasthelate AdmiralShinjiroYamamoto,one-timetutorofthe presentEmperorHirohito.Hewasthepersonwho persuadedMadameFranchiMussinitopaintthe wall-knownpictureofOurLadyofJapan,which depictstheBlessedMotheroverMountFuji.

ThispicturehasinspiredmanyprayersfortheconversionofJapan.'

TheCongregationoftheHolyOfficewasnotoffended thesesuggestionsandcompetentcirclesare :studyingtheproposal.DespitetheHolyOffice'straditionalreserve,itsmembersmakenosecretofthe factthataprogrammeofreformisunderexamination.Itisadmittedthattheindexinitspresent formisnotsufficientwarningforthefaithfulagainst thepoisonemanatingfromprintedmatter.Itis thoughtthatsomethingmorecomplete,organicand uniformisneeded.

Worksplacedontheindextodaygenerallyareof considerableimportance,eitherbecauseofthenotorietyoftheirauthororbecausetheideastheycontain aredangeroustotheFaithandcaneasilygainafootholdinourtimes.

Earliernormsforcondemningabookbannedthose whichopposedorderidedaCatholicdogma,ordiscreditedreligion,andincompleteorapocryphaleditionsoftheHolyScriptures.Addedtothese,today,

Thereisalsothefactthatplacingabookonthe indexinvolvesalongprocedure,initiatedonlywhen abookhasbeenformallydenouncedtothecongre-

gation.Therethenfollowsanexaminationofthe book'scontents.Allnecessaryprecautionsaretaken toavoidunfaircondemnationbeforeacaseissubmittedtothecongregation,andforapprovalofthe Pope. MembersoftheHolyOfficepointoutthatcritics whoclaimtheindexisunnecessarybecausethefaithfulareobligedinconsciencetoavoidharmfulbooks. failtoconsiderthefullproblem.

CanonLawspecifiesthatthefaithfulmustabstain fromreadingnotonlybannedbooks,butalsoany kindofwritingswhichmightcausethemtorisk losingtheirfaithorwhichcouldcorrupttheirmorals. Thisisamoralobligationwithoutexemotions.The seriousnessofitsinfringementisproportionatetothe damageincurred.

Evenso,itisargued,ordinaryCatholicswould rarelyrealisethedanger.SotheChurchhelpsto keepthemawayfromundesirablereadingbywarningsandbypubliclyforbiddingthereadingofcertainpublications.
