Hesaidthat,contraryto whatMr.ReneMacCollhas recentlystatedinhisbook, atypedcopyofwhatpur- portedtobeanextractfrom thediaryofRogerCasementwasplacedonhis deskintheForeignOffice onadayin1916andwas hastilywithdrawnafterhe hadbeengivenafewminutestolookatit.

WhentheJapanesepersecutionbrokeoutthese confraternitiesandtheJesuit-establishedSodalities oftheBlessedVirginwerethemainsupportof Christians.Oneisremindedoftherolebeingplayed todaybytheLegionofMaryincommunistChina.
Aftertheclergyhadbeenexecutedorbanished, thesodalityandconfraternitymemberswentundergroundandcontinuedtooperateinthesmallgo-ningumi(five-membergroupi).
Itwassuchgroupsthatkeptthefaithaliveand enabledChristianstocirculatetheirnews,letters anddispatches.Theybribedjailorsinoldertoget foodtoimprisonedmissionariesandsmuggleouttheir letters.
SoimportantwasMariandevotionduringthese timesthattheJapaneseoverlordsusedpicturesof MaryaswellasofChristforthefumi-e(image treading)ordeal.TodiscoverwhowasChristian, soldierswouldappearinavillage,placesacred picturesonthegroundandcompeleveryoneinthe streettotrampleonthem.Thosewhodidnotwere killed.
Christiansadoptedmanydevicestokeeptheir devotiontoMaryaliveduringthepersecution.One suchdevicewastoplaceacrossonthebreastofa statueofHazeKwannontoidentifyitasMary.A numberofgenuinestatuesofMarywerepreserved andhiddenduringthepersecutionintheNandoor mostsecretpartofthehouse.Thesebecamepopularlyknownas"godsofthenando."

Evenbeforethefirstmodernmissionarysetfooton thesoilofareopenedJapaninthe19thcentury, anotherpagewasaddedtothehistoryofMarian devotionhere.FatherFourcade,whoneverreached Japan,composedaprayerdedicatingJapantothe ImmaculateHeartofMarywhilesailinginthenearby Ryukyusislandsin1844.Thisactofdedicationwas solemnlyreaffirmedbytheJapanesehierarchyin 1948.
OneofthefirstquestionsaskedofFatherPetitjeanwhenhevisitedtheoldChristiansatNagasaki onMarch17,1865,was"Whereisthestatueof MariaSama?"
SeveralyearsbeforeFatherPetitjean'sarrival, ProtestantmissionarieshadbuiltachurchinNagasaki,butwerespurnedwhentheoldChristianslearnedtheProtestantshadnospecialdevotiontoMary.
In1868thepersecutionflaredupagainand800 Christiansdiedratherthantrampleonarosary. Another4,000Christianswereexiled.Ofthese,153 weresenttoTsuwano,nearthecityofYamaguchi, where36died.
Oneofthese,JohnBaptistYasutaro,wasconfined foreightdaysinacellthreefeetsquareandthree feetdeep.Onthethirddayofhiscaptivityhetold DominicFukahori,acatechist,thathewasnotlonely.
"Everynightfrom10p.m.untildawn,"hesaid, "abeautifulladylikethepictureofMariaSama appearsabovemyhead.IbelieveitisMariaSama. Inagentle,motherlyvoiceshegivesmegoodadvice andcomfort.
"DonotsayangthingaboutthiswhileIamalive," heended.Fivedayslaterhewasdead.
Gravesofthe36martyrsofTsuwanowerediscoveredbyFatherVillionatOtomeToge(Otome Pass)ontheoutskirtsofTsuwano.Achapelwas beguntherein1948anddedicatedin1951toOur LadyofOtomeTogeandthe36Martyrs.
EvenbeforeSt.Francis XaviercametoJapan.Mariandevotionhadbegun.
MissionSocietywasevangelisingJapananddevotion toOurLadyofLourdesbecamepopular.
In1875,anepidemicbrokeoutinNagasaki.After 40Christianshaddiedandanother60wereatthe pointofdeath,BishopLaucaigneurgedhispeople tobeginanovenatoOurLadyofLourdes.No furtherdeathswerereported.
Priorto1910,20cureswererecordedandattributedtotheintercessionofOurLadyofLourdes.Recently,anothersuchcurewasassessedtoherbyDr. Nagai,avictimoftheNagasakiatomicbomb.
Thescientisthadawoundwhichrefusedtoheal. Aftersixweeksofcontinuedbleeding,thedoctors gaveuphope.OneofDr.Nagai'sfriendsbrought himsomeLourdeswaterandtoldhimtodrinkit. Hedidandfellasleep.Uponawakeninghediscoveredthebleedinghadstopped.
Inhisbook,RosarionoKusari(RosaryChain), Dr.Nagaisaidhismottowas"TheRosaryinevery place,theRosaryforeverything."Thebookwas eagerlyreadinJapan.
Dr.Nagaidiedofradiationsickness.
AnotherfamousdevoteeofMarywasthelate AdmiralShinjiroYamamoto,one-timetutorofthe presentEmperorHirohito.Hewasthepersonwho persuadedMadameFranchiMussinitopaintthe wall-knownpictureofOurLadyofJapan,which depictstheBlessedMotheroverMountFuji.
ThispicturehasinspiredmanyprayersfortheconversionofJapan.'
Sincethen,OtomeTogehasbeenafamedpilgrimagecentreandanannualprocessionisheld thereonthesecondSundayofMay.Dr.PaulTakahsi Nagai,thefamedscientist-convertknownasthe "saintoftheatombomb,"wroteabooklet,published in1952,abouttheshrine.
