PopeTellsPyschologistsTo UseMoralityOnGod'sSons

VaticanCity,April10.-Psychologymakesitselfliabletoerrorifitfailstorecognise thatmanisthesonofGodandmadeinHisimage.ThiswarningwasgivenbyHisHolinessPopePiusXIIinaspeechtodelegatestotheRomeCongressoftheInternational AssociationofAppliedPsychologywhowerereceivedinaudiencehere.ThePopealso toldhislistenersthatmodernpsychologyingeneraldeservesapprovalfromamoraland religiousviewpoint,butthatcertainmoralproblemsarisefromsomeofitsmethods, suchastheuseofliedetectorsandtheso-calledtruthserums.

ThePope'saddresswasdividedintothreemajor !farts:

1.Adefinitionofthehumanpersonalityfromthe psychologicalandmoralpointsofview.

2.Adiscussionofthemoralobligationsofthe psychologistinrelationtothehumanpersonality.

3.Adiscourseonfundamentalmoralprinciplesof thehumanpersonalityinpsychology.

ThePontiffdefinedpersonalityas"thepsychosomaticunityofmaninsofarasitisdeterminedand governedbythesoul."

ThePopesaid:

"WherfoneconsidersmanasaworkofGod,one discoversinhimtwoimportantcharacteristicsforthe developmentandvalueoftheChristianpersonality: itsresemblancetoGod,derivedfromtheactof creation,anditsdivinesonshipinChrist,mademanifestbyRevelation.

"InfactChristianpersonalitybecomesincomprehensibleifoneneglectsthesepointsandpsychology_ especiallyappliedpsychology,alsolaysitselfopento misunderstandingsanderrorsifitdisregardsthem. Forthesearenotimaginedorassumednotions,but realfacts."

Equallyessentialalongwiththesetwopointsfrom areligiousandmoralviewpoint, thePopesaid, isthe factthatmanhasthecapacityanddutytoperfect hisnature, notashemightliketo, butaccordingto theobjectivestandardsestablishedbytheplanof God.

AtthispointthePopenotedthatthereare"certaindisputableassertions"inthecodeof"Ethical StandardsforPsychologists"compiledafewyearsago bytheAmericanPsychologicalAssociation.

Hesaidthattheideawhichinspiredthecodemust beapproved,butaddedthat"whoeverneglectsor scornsthenormsofamoralobjectiveorderwillonly acquireadeformedandimperfectpersonality."

TheHolyFatherdeclaredthatifoneadmitsthat

AsthePopegavethem,theseprinciplesare:

1.-"Anymanmustbeconsiderednormaluntil thereisprooftothecontrary."

2.-"Thenormalmandoesnothavetheoretical freedomalone,butenjoystheuseoffreedom."

3.-"Thenormalmaniscapableofsurmounting thedifficultieswhichhinderhisobservanceofthe morallawwhenhemakesproperuseofthespiritual energiesathisdisposal."

5.-"Eventhedynamismsoftheunconsciousand thesubconsciousarenotirresistible;therearestill greatpossibilitiesformasteringthem,particularly forthenormalsubject."

6.-"Thenormalmanisthereforeordinarily responsibleforthedecisionshemakes."

ThePontiffsaidthatitisnecessarytctakeinto accountman'sattitudetowarddeath,judgment,good andevil,andGodHimself,tounderstandthepersonality.Afterdeath,heobserved,mancannolonger change,butremainsfixed'inthosedispositionshe formedwhileliving.Butwhilehelives,thePope pointedout,hemayfreelychoose,anditisprecisely thiswhichconstitutesthedecisiveelementinthe structureofhispersonality.

"Thislaststageofthepsychicfuturecanbebut ofasecondarynatureforpsychology,"hesaid."But sinceitisconcernedwiththepsychicalstructures

Proceedingtothesecondpartofhisdiscoursetheobligationsofthepsychologistinrelationtothe humanpersonality-thePopestatedfirstofallthat modernpsychologyingeneralmeritsapprovalfrom thereligiousandmoralviewpoint.

However,notallthemethodsitusescanbe defended,hesaid.Forexample,thePontiffsaid, moralproblemsariseinregardtothosemethodsthat intrudeintothe"sacredintimacies"ofthepersonality. suchasnarcosynthesis(useofdrugstoaidinpsychoanalysis)andtheuseofliedetectors.

Inthisconnectionhesaid:

Itsometimeshappensthatthefullconsentofthe interestedpersonisnotassured,andtojustifyquestionableprocedures(thepsychologist)invokesthe priorityofscienceovermoralvaluesandoverthe interestsoftheindividuals."

ProtectionOfSecretsIsNecessary

ThePopesaidthatthedemandsofsciencedonot inthemselvesjustifytheuseofallmethods,evenby sincerepsychologistsandforgoodpurposes.

"Thggprimaryquestionisnotpsychologyitselfand itspolsibleprogress,butthehumanpersonwho appliesitandwhoobeyshighersocial,moraland religiousnorms,"thePopesaid."Thesamealso appliestotheotherbranchesofscience."

Incaseswhereapersonwillinglysubmitshimself topsychologicalexperimentsandtreatments,hesaid, itmustfirstbeborneinmindthat"thecontentof thepsycheistheexclusivepropertyoftheperson." Thereforewhenthepatientgiveswhatishis,the psychologistmaymakeuseofit,hesaid,adding:

IntegrationOfMaltaWith BritainSeemsRemote

London,April8.-ProspectsfortheintegrationofCatholicMaltaintotheUnited KingdomseemedverydimasitsSocialist PremierDomMintofflefthereafterseveral weeksoftalksandconferencewithBritish governmentofficials.

Thetalksbrokedown completelywhenthevery importantpointoffinance enteredthepicture.

IntegrationintotheUnited Kingdom-whichwould giveBritain'sMediterranean islandcolonymuchthe samepositionintheUnited KingdomasNorthernIreland-hasbeenMr.Mintoff'splantosaveMalta frombankruptcy.

Theislandgetsmostof itsrevenuefromthefact thatGreatBritainusesitas anavalbase.Mostofthe Maltese,90percent.of whomareCatholics, are eitherpoorfarmersor peoplewhoinsomewaydependonBritishandNato basesfortheirlivelihood.

ArchbishopMichaelGonzi ofMaltahasrepeatedly pointedoutthedangersto CatholicismonMaltawhich mightarisefromintegration.

Inaradiooroadcastbeforeareferendumonthe integrationplaninFebruary 1956,heexpressedthefear that"political, socialand economicincorporationof smallCatholicMaltawith ProtestantEnglandcould notbutbringperilstothe faithandmoralsofour people."

Earlier, theArchbishop andBishopGiuseppePace ofGozohadissuedapastoralaskingforawritten agreementthattheBritish Parliament, intheeventof Malta'sintegration, would notattempttolegislateon mattersrelatingtothe ChurchinMalta.

Theguaranteeswerenot made,however,and,inhis

broadcast,ArchbishopGonzi said:"Ifwehadtheguarantees, wewouldhavebeen abletotellyouthatfrom thereligiousaspectthereis nothingagainstintegration. Asthingsstandatpresent wecannottellyouthis."

Theresultsofthereferendumshowedthatmostof thevotersapprovedtheintegrationplan.Butmore thanhalfoftheisland's votersabstainedfromcastingballots.

WiththeCatholicChurch recognisedastheisland's religion, educationwould probablybeleftinCatholic hands.ButCatholicshave expressedanxietyabout suchthingsasthepossible introductionofBritishlegislationwithitsdvorcelaws -divorceisnowforbidden onMalta-abouttheBritishmedicalservice'seasy attitudetowardsbirthcontrolandaboutastrengthenedBritishculturewhichis essentiallyProtestant.

Mr.Mintoffhascalled thesefearsunfounded.

"MaltaisCatholic,"he hasdeclared,"andwe, that istheMaltaLabourparty, andtheBritishGovernment havegivenassurancesthat therewillbenochangein thereligiousstatusofthe island.AslongastheMaltesepeopleremainCatholic, thepositionoftheChurch (ontheisland)willremain unchanged."

Thisstatementwasmade beforethereferendum, however, andwhentheplan wasfirstintroduced. These guaranteeshaveneverbeen putintowritingasArchbishopGonziasked.
