OnApril13,UniversitySunday,aspecial MasswasheldforCatholicgraduatesand undergraduatesinthechapelofSt.Thomas MoreCollege.Theacademicprocessioninto thechapelwasledbymembersoftheUniversitystaff,followedbygraduatesandthen undergraduates.

TheMasswasaMissa Cantata,celebratedbythe V.Rev.C.P.Finn,S.J., rectorofthecollege.The singingwasledbythe MarianSingers,conducted byMr.B.O'Leary.

AttheOffertory,there wasatwofoldprocession. First,thebreadandwine, whichweretobeconsecratedattheMass,were broughttothealtarsecond, studentsfromthevarious facultiescarryingtextbooks cameinprocessiontothe sanctuarywherethebooks werelaid,symbolisingthe consecrationofstudiesto God.

"Itismostfitting,"he said,"thatthislastfunctionofthepilgrimageto Lourdes,beforeitsdeparturefromAustralianshores, shouldtakeplaceina Cathedralwhichwasthe firstinAustralia,andone ofthefirstintheworld,to bededicatedtotheImmaculateConceptionafterthe solemndefinitionofthe dogma."

Thebeautifulsingingof theCathedralchoirunder thebatonofRev.P.McCuddenandthejoyousringingoftheCathedralcarillongavecolourtotheceremonywhichconcludedwith thesingingofthe"Itinerarium"bythestudentsfrom St.Charles'Seminarywho wereinattendance.

TheceremonieswereunderthedirectionoftheV. Rev.J.P.Wilkinson,C.M., rectorofSt.Charles'Seminary.

Manyamongthevastcongregationwhosoughteven standingroomintheCathedralwerevisiblymovedby theimpressivefunction.

Breakfastfollowedinthe Universityrefectory.Mr. B.Sutherland,presidentof theundergraduateNewman society,introducedMr.D. Cullity,B.Sc.,whospoke on"TheLaymaninthe Church."

Theword"lay,"Mr.Cullitysaid,wasderivedfrom theGreek.IntheOldTestament,itwasusedtodesignatethepeopleofGodas distinctfromtheGentiles; inthefirstfourcenturies A.D,itstoodfortheChristianpeopleasdistinctfrom thenon-baptised. The modernmeaning,inwhich itstoodforonlypartof theChurch,wastherefore differentfromtheancient one. AllCatholicsweremembersoftheChurchand therebyunitedtoGod.The Church,however,wasnot justacommunityofbelievers;ithadalsoahierarchicalstructure.Atthe Reformation,thatstructure hadbeenbitterlyattacked andforseveralcenturies

LikeallCatholics,the laymanwascalledtoperfection,tosanctifyhimself, buthewascalledtoper- fectionwithinthecircumstancesofhisstateinlife. Hewasnotcalledtoforsake theworldbuttoliveinthe midstofitandbringthe worldtoChrist. Asaintwholivedina monastery,therefore,could notbeaveryexactmodel foralayman.Heneeded rathertheexampleofa manlikeSt.ThomasMore, lawyer,publicfigure,father ofafamily.

ForthefirsttimeinhistorytheChurchhada numerouseducatedCatholic laityinmanycountriesof theworld.Thislaityshould realiseitsresponsibilites wthregardtopersonalsanctificationandthe-apostolate. Therewasworkinthe twentiethcenturywhich onlyitcoulddo. AvoteofthankstoMr. CullitywaspassedbyMr. J.Toohey,L.L.B.,acting presidentofthegraduate divisionoftheNewman society.

Theorganisationofthe Massandbreakfastwasin thehandsofacommittee oftheundergraduateNewmansociety.

ThisShrineofOurLady ofPerpetualSuccourwas recentlydonatedtothenew St.Paul'sChurch,Mt.Lawley,byMrs.IreneDorman inmemoryofherlatehusband,LeslieCyrilDoman whodiedinOct.last.. Thebeautifulflowertrough ontheShrineisthework ofafriendoftheDornan familyandwasdonatedby themakerandhisfamily inperpetuationoftheirpast friendshipandesteem.

Ronnersreuth,Germany, April5:ThereseNeumann, famedGermanstigmatist, againsufferedtheagonies oftheCrucifixionhereon GoodFridayforseveral hours.

Asinpastyears,crowds ofthefaithfulstreamed intothisBavarianvillage despiteheavyrains.Some 3,000visitors,amongthem manypriests,filedpastthe stigmatist'sbedwhileshe wasinatrance.

FatherJosephNaber,the villagepastor,explainedthe spiritualsignificanceofher visions.

Manypeoplenoticedthe bloodflowingfreelyfrom the.eyesandheadwounds ofThereseNeumann,who willbe60yearsoldApril 9.

OnPalmSundaythe ChurchcameofageacademicallyinthisState,with theofficialopeningofSt. ThomasMorecollege.Tome thatwasthemostsignificantthingthathashappenedinthe38yearsthatI havebeeninW.A.

In1924,inaclassroom intheoldUniversityinIrwin-street,wheretheChildren'sCourtsitstoday,I hadthehonourofestablishingtheNewmanSociety oneofwhoseaimswasthe buildingofaresidential collegewithintheUniversity.

OnPalmSunday,aday oftriumph,thatdreamcame true,thathopewasrealised, thatprayerwasanswered. Andwenowhavetakenour properplacewithinthe University.Wehavecome tostayonthecampusasa memberoftheUniversity family.

Thatwearewelcomewas apparentfromthesplendid representationoftheSenate andfacultiesattheopening.Andatthelastmeeting oftheSenatetheChancellormovedavoteofwelcometoSt.ThomasMore collegeandcomplimented usonourdignifiedandenjoyableceremony.

THECRAWLEYSITE

Thetemporarybuildings onIrwin-streetservedtheir usefulpurposeuntilthe Universitycametothe Crawleysite,whichhasno equalinAustralia,and,in myopinion,hasbutone rival-LelandStandford UniversityinCalifornia, whichisalsobuiltinmissionstyle.

Thenawindfallfrom abovefellupontheUniversityintheformoftheHackettbequestwhichbuiltthe firstbuildings,theWinthrop Hall,andourfriendly neighbour,St.George'sCollege.

Hackettwasbornand educatedinDublin,theson ofaChurchofIrelandparson.HecametoKalgoorlie withthegoldrush,gotinterestedinnewspaperwork, cametoPerthandeventuallybought"TheWest Australia"anditsproducts.

Whenhediedjustbefore WorldWar1,hisestatewas carefullyhusbandedbyhis executor,SirAlfredLangley,whomtheUniversity honourswithatabletfinely wroughtinmosaicinthe foyertoWinthropHall.

Thismanhadvision enoughtobuynewspaper supplieswhichcarriedhis companyrightthroughthe war.Theestatewaseventuallysoldandrealised £600,000.

In1934IreceivedaGovernmentappointmenttothe Senateandoninstruction fromArchbishopClune,who hadagreatinterestina UniversityCollege,applied forasite.TheSenate grantedusfiveacresand madeoverthissitetoNewmanCollegeasitwasfirst nominated.

Indeferencetothewishes ofthegreatrectorofNewmanCollege,Melbourne, FatherJeremiahMurphy, wealteredthenametoSt. ThomasMore,recommendedbyourArchbishop,and ineverysenseanappropriateandinspiringname.

THECOLLEGEAPPEAL

asourpeopledidnotrealise theneedofaresidentialcollege.Mostoftheparishes hadtheirownheavycommitmentsinchurchand schoolbuildingprogrammes.

Ourpeopleasalways, oncetheysawtheneed, gavegenerously;toouraid alsocamedonationsfrom ournon-Catholicwellwishers.

Ascendingfrombelowup throughthecoatofarmsis theCrosstoassureusthat GodtheFather,Whocreatedtheearth,sun,moon,and stars,sentHisownDivine Sontoredeemus,andfrom thembothcametheHoly Spirittosanctifyus.

Thearchitectswerecommissionedtoplanamodern buildingasthecostofcontinuingtheUniversitystyle wasprohibitive.Atfirstthe collegewastreatedasan uglyducklingamidthe gracefulswansoftheUniversity.Somehintedthat itwasanannextoSt. George'sCollege.

Buttodaytheuglyducklinghasgrownintoaswan andbidsfairtoattractmore attentionthanherolder sisters.ProfessorStephenson,aworldauthority,has fullyapproved.TwovisitingVice-Chancellors broughtbacktotheirUniversitiesatManchesterand VancouverplansoftheCollegetoimitate.

Thenewengineering schoolhasfollowedasimilarpatternandtheWomen's Collegehasdecidedona likedesign.

Sowestartedsomething andourarchitects,HendersonandThompson,areto becongratulatedontheir courageandinitiative.May weneverceasetothank MonsignorMossofNedlandsforthischapelwhich ishisgift.

THECHAPELWINDOWS

Thefirststainedglass window,thatofSt.Thomas More,wasdedicatedtothe memoryofthefirstArchbishopofPerth,Dr.Clune, byhislife-longfriendSir J.D.Connolly,K.S.G.Sir JameswasaCabinetMinisterinW.A.andlaterits Agent-GeneralinLondon, wherehestilllives.

Thesecondworldwarand thesubsequentbuildingrestrictionsdelayedourhopes. Butsomefewyearsagoour lArchbishop,withsupernaturalconfidenceandinspiredleadershipdecided ,thattheChurchcouldnot affordtolosethissite,as theSenatehadputatime limitonitsgrant,andappointedasmallcommittee headedbyBishopGoody, hisauxiliaryatthetime, toappealineveryparish throughouttheArchdiocese. Itwasatoughassignment

Theseventriplelightson theeastsideneededwindowsofdeepcolouringto facethestrongeasternsun. RichardKing,ofDublin, wascommissionedtocreate thesewindowsandwhata happychoiceisapparentin thethreewindowsnowin place!

LastsummerIvisitedhis studioveryoftentowatch, and,indeed,topraywith him,ashemadethewindow totheHolySpirit.

WiththeUniversity motto"SeekWisdom"beforehimasachallenge,he soughtaninterpretationof themissionoftheHoly Ghostthatwouldinspire facultyandstudentsintheir pursuitoftruthtolivethe motto"SeekWisdom."

Thisisawindowtoteach.

Ourredemptionandsanctificationaremadepossible throughthesacrificeofthe Cross;andunlessthereis sacrifice,freelyacceptedand gladlybornebyallwithin thisUniversity,theidealof "SeekWisdom"willevade professorsandstudents.

NowthatwehaAcome ofagetheChurchexpects fromyouthatyoubenot satisfiedwithjustgetting throughandsinkinginto theoblivionofmediocrities.

Iffromthiscrowded chapelbutonebecamea scholarthentheexpenseof thiscollegeandchapel wouldbefullyrepaid. ThroughtheHolySpiritno oneneedremainamediocrity.

ASPIRITUALVISION

Thefoundingfathersof thisUniversityhadvision spiritualandprophetic whentheysettheidealof "SeekWisdom"beforethis youngseatoflearning.

Inthisourlaboratoryage whenexperimentsandresearchareextendingthe frontiersofknowledgeand deepeningitscontent,there isadangerthatspiritual values,whichcannotbe seenunderamicroscope, mayberelegatedtoaminor placeinthemindsofprofessorsandstudents.

TheUniversitymotto challengesustoseekwisdom,forawiseheartmeans moreintheconductoflife thanjustacleverhead. Althoughtheneedofmanywell-trainedpriestsis basictothepreservationandextensionoftheCatholic religion,thedivineworkofthepropagationofthe Faithwouldbynomeansbemetwerethatradical requirementfilled.Forbetweenthepriesthoodand thelayconditionisthatwitnessoftheperfectChristianlife-atleastinstriving-whichfillsupsomuch thatiswanitingofthespiritofChristinthelifeof theChurch.TheReligiousOrdersofpriests,Brothers, andnunsprovidetheopportunityandthemilieufor theleavingofallthingsandthefully-dedicatedfollowingofOurLord.That,withoutquestion,istheir chiefvaluethattheyshowforthChristtotheworld. Andtheirworks-ofmagnitude,richnessandvariety followthem.Theyexpressinvisiblefashionthe heartsofGracethatinspirethem.Butthey,too,are feelingthestringencythatarisesfrommultiplying tasksanddiminishingorstaticnumbers.Thecloisters arenotovercrowded.

Thereisconcernchieflyaboutthefailureofyoung womentorespondtoGod'scalltotheReligiouslife. Thereisnotadioceseinthecountrywhichisnot feelingthepinchwhenthematterarisesofopening newschools.Nunsarelackingtostaffourschools, ourhospitals,ourhomesfortheaged,theorphan, andthepenitent.Indeed,unlessthesituationimproves,thedaymaynotbefardistantwhenlay womenwillhavetobeemployedinthoseworksof instructionandmercy.Hereisapracticalandurgent problemwhichispeculiarlythetaskofwomento faceandtosolve.Totheyoung,unmarriedwoman itthrowsdownachallenge.Ifanygirlthinkshtat shewillgainmore,intermsofgraceandevenof naturalhappinessintheworld,eveninmarriage, thaninthecloistershedeceivesherself.

Thereforeletusresolve thismorningtocometothis chapelfrequentlythatwe maygrowwiseunderthe inspirationandguidanceof theHolySpirit. WilliamBedeDailey,whodiedin1888,' wasborninahumblelittlecottageinGeorge St.,NorthSydney,onJuly5,1831,andwas baptisedbyFatherJohnJosephTherry, founderoftheChurchinAustralia,onAug. 1,inoldSt.Mary'sCathedral.

HisgodparentswereCatherineandWilliamDavisinwhosecottageinCharlottePlacetheBlessedSacramenthadrestedafterFatherJeremiahO'Flynnwas deportedbyGovernorLachlanMacquarieonMay, 1818.

Hisfather,JohnDailey,wasaformerconvict,a wool-comberanddyerandDorsetshireman,whowas wassentencedtotransportationforlifeinMarch,1818, forhouse-robberyandarrivedhereonDecember31,1 1818,attheageof19.HewasaconverttotheCatholic Faith.

Hereceivedhisticket-of-leaveafter10years,aconditionalpardonin1833andanabsolutepardonon September8,1836.

JohnDalley'swife,Catherine,wasalsoanex-convict,anativeofCork,whowassentencedtoaterm ofsevenyearsinApril,1824,whenshewas20years ofage,forstealingsheets.

Shereceivedherticket-of-leaveinduecourseand workedasanurseatthepropertyofJohnStreet,at Bathurst,whereherfuturehusbandwasemployedas afootman.

JohnDalleybecameaCatholicatsomestage,and theyweremarried.In1831JohnDaileyboughta pieceoflandinGeorgeSt.Northandopenedabusinessdealingindraperyandmercery,whichhecarriedonuntilthemid-forties,whenheretired.

Hehadassembledmodestwealthandownedland inthecityandcountry.Afterhisretirementhe settledinMacquarie-street,wherehediedin1871, aged70.Hiswifediedatthesamehousein1869, aged65.

WilliamBedeDaileywasborntotheseparentsina littlehouseatwhatisnow119George-street,and therehespenthischildhood.Aplaymateinhisyouth wasFrankGardiner,whobecameanotoriousbushrangerandwasdefendedbyDaileyathistrialin 1864.

Afterattendingpreparatoryschools,youngWilliam BedeDalleywasapupilattheSydneyCollegeuntil 1841,whenheenteredSt.Mary'sSeminary,then attachedtoSt.Mary'sCathedral.Onewritersaidof youngDalleythat"asaschoolboyhewaseverready forfun,butyetnotunmindfulofhisstudies."

surviveaprotestagainsthiselectiononthegroundswholeworld,havebeendenouncedfromthepulpit, thathewasnotqualified.

OnJanuary21,1858,Dalleywaselectedforthe CumberlandBoroughs,andinNovemberbecame Solicitor-GeneralunderPremierCharlesCowper, holdingthepostforthreemonths.Hewasonly27 yearsofageatthetime.

inthepressandonpublicplatformsthroughoutthe colony,intermswhichChristiangentlemenwould blushtohearappliedtotheheathen,"hesaid.

InJune,1859,atthenextelection,hewaselected forWindsor.InFebruary,1860,heresignedtogoto England,receivingatributeevenfromDr.JohnDunmoreLang,thePresbyterianminister,atasend-off. Hestayedabroadforseveralmonths,developinghis knowledgeandbroadeninghisoutlook.

ThenextyearDaileywentabroadagain,thistime onamissiontoobtainmigrantswithHenryParkes, thenamanof46years,withwhomhehadestablished aclosefriendship.

Thetwoemigrationcommissioners,astheywere called,arrivedinEnglandinAugust,1861,butenjoyed modestsuccessonlyintheirmission.

Earlier,onMay10,1861,Daileywasoneofagroup appointedtoswamptheLegislativeCounciltoenable thepassageofJohnRobertson'sLandBill-thoughthe planmisfired.

BrilliantLawyerAndWriter

Dalley,onhisreturnfromabroad,decidedtoplace themainemphasisinhiscareeronthepracticeof law.Soonhewasknownastheablestfigureatthe SydneyBar.Criminaljurisdictionwashisspecial interest.Heenjoyedbrilliantsuccessasacriminal prosecutor,besidesadvocate.

Hewasskilfulinimpressingajuryandfiguredin allthebigcriminalcases,commandinghugefees.It issaidofhimthatheneverrefusedabriefforapoor prisoner.

HisopponentasCrownProsecutoronoccasionswas EdwardButler,anothereminentCatholicofthetime and,l'keDalley,acontributorto"TheFreeman's Journal."

Thestoryistoldofhimthathewasoncetravelling byCobbandCo.coachtotheForbesAssizeswith JudgeWindeyerwhenthepartywasheldupby bushrangers.

WhenthebushrangerslearntthatDaileywason hiswaytodefendacolleague,hisgoldwatchand £200thathadbeentakenfromhimwet...returned, whereastheeminentjudgewasunceremoniously dumpedintoanearbywaterhole!

HisteachersincludedscholarlyearlyBenedictines likeArchbishopPolding,Dr.DavisandDr.Gregory. Inhisschooldayshebegananintimateandlife-long friendshipwithArchbishopPolding.

Hisschooldaysover,heworkedintheofficeof SydneyBurdekinandthensignedarticleswith FrederickWrightUnwin,asolicitorwithwhomhe studiedforthreeyears.Hishealthwasindifferent, buthefurtheredhiseducation,mainlythroughprivate study.

HespecialisedinGreekandcompletedstudiesin law,whichqualifiedhimtopractiseasalawyer.On July5,1856,hewasadmittedabarristeroftheN.S.W. SupremeCourt,whichwasthenjustover30years old.

WilliamBedeDaileyhadalreadybeguntowin recognitionasanorator,besidesawell-informedand public-mindedyoungman,whowasinterestinghimselfinthepoliticalaffairsofthecolony.

Hemetwell-knownmen,likeW.C.Wentworth, CharlesGavanDuffy,CharlesCowper,HenryParkes andothers,andhispoliticalaspirationswererewarded when,onDecember30,1856,asaLiberalPartycandidate,hedefeatedMr.JohnFairfax,founderof"The SydneyMorningHerald,"intheCityofSydneyconstituencyby508votes.

Certainly,no-mancontributedmoretoanycause thandidWilliamBedeDalleytotheeducation strugglefromwhichthepresentset-upinlocaleducationemerged.

NotintheslightestparticulardidhespareParkes inthiscontroversy,yetwhenheresignedfromthe LegislativeCouncilshortlyafterwards,Parkeswrote alettertohiminfriendlyterms,towhichDailey repliedinsimilarstrains:

"I,too,likeyourself,haveakeenandconsoling remembranceoftimeswhenyou,andIenjoyedother relationsthatthoseinwhichcircumstances have placedustowardseachother,"Dalleywrote.

"Ishallnotwillinglypermitthisrecollectiontobe tarnished,andshall,Itrust,alwaysthinkofyou, howeverwemaybefatedtodifferfromeachother, asyourfriendshipitwasmyprivilegetopossesswhen Iwasassimilatingthefirstlessonsofmylifeandto retainthroughthemanyvicissitudesandexperiences."

WhentheParkes-Robertsoncoalitionwasdefeated in1882,DaileybecameAttorney-Generalinthe MinistryofPremierAlexanderStuart.In1885,when Mr.StuartwasinNewZealandowingtoill-health, DalleybecameActing-PremierofN.S.W.-thefirst timethataCatholicwaspoliticalheadoftheN.S.W. State.

InthiscapacityDalleyorganisedacontingentof 1,000AustralianstofightintheSoudan,whichleft SydneyonMarch3,1885-thefirsttimethatAustraliansoldierswentabroad.

In1886hewasmadeaPrivyCouncillor.Hewas thefirstAustraliantoachievethishighdistinction. Atanotherstagehedeclinedaknighthood.anditis said,too,thathecouldhavereceivedtheChiefJusticeship-hadhesodesired.

Foryearshewasaleaderinthemovementforthe completionofSt.Mary'sCathedral.Foryearshis eloquentorationsthunderedthroughtheCathedral, oneofthemostmemorablebeingthatdeliveredin May,1888,when,withthecentenaryofthecolony approaching,amovewasbegununderCardinalMoran tocompletethechancelandpartofthecentraltower.

In1868,whenHenryParkesinventedthefiction thataFenianplotexistedinthecolony,followingthe attemptedassassinationoftheDukeofEdinburgh, sonofQueenVictoria,atClontarf,andcruellysouoht toexploittheincidenttothedisadvantageofCatholics andIrishinthecolony,WilliamBedeDailey,ina powerfulreply,effectivelydebunkedParkes.Hedid notallowhisfriendshipwithParkestodissuadehim fromdoinghisdutyasaCatholicunflinchinglyand completely.

"ThechargesofParkeswereprovedtobeentire, absoluteandunqualifiedfalsehoods,"hesaidinhis reply,entitled"ATerribleIndictment,"adding:"I neverwishtosayanunkindwordaboutanyliving creature;butthere'arecharacterssorepulsiveasto makereticenceonthepartofhonestmenacrime,and combinationstooinfamoustomaketolerationanything buttreasonagainsttruth."Catholicsneverforgothis gallantdestructionofthe"KiamaGhost."

MagnificentInTheSchools'Battle

In1870Daileyre-enteredpoliticswhenhebecame amemberoftheLegislativeCouncil.Heresignedin 1873,butin1875acceptedtheinvitationofSirJohn RobertsontobecomeAttorney-GeneralinhisMinistry.InApril,1880,heresignedagainfromtheLegislativeCouncil.

SirJohnRobertson,meanwhile,hadsurprisedby formingaCoalitionGovernmentwithhisformer opponent,HenryParkes,inDecember,1878,andit wasthisGovernmentthatpassedthePublicInstructionActthatabolishedaidtodenominationalschools.

ItfelltothelotofWilliamBedeDalleytobethe layleader,alongsideoftheecclesiasticalleadership ofArchbishopRogerBedeVaughan,inthemovement againstthePublicInstructionBillofHenryParkes, whichcamebeforeParliamentin1879.

OnOctober15,1879,in,the'parishHallofSt. Francis,Haymarket,whichwasdemolishedinlater generations,Daileymadeamemorablespeechafew weeksbeforeParkestabledthelegislationinParliament.

Hisspeechwasthatofaprincipledandfearless Catholic,preparedtoplacedevotiontohisFaithand loyaltytohisChurchaheadofallpoliticalorother considerations.
