PressApostolateIsMostImportant

TheApostolateoftheCatholicPresswas oneofthemostimportantintheChurchand distributionofCatholicpapersandmagazinessharedwithpublicationinthegreatnessandfruitsofthisvitalwork.

HisExcellencytheApostolicDelegate,Archbishop Carboni,saidthisinamessagetotheThirdAnnual ConventionoftheCatholic PressAssociationofAustraliaheldatHobartfrom March19to21.

HisExcellency'smessage readinpart:

Theheightenedco-operationbetweentheCatholic papersofAustraliathathas resultedfromthefrankdiscussionsandjointgrappling withpressproblemsisitselfsufficienttestimonyof theefficacyofthesegatherings.

Againyouwilltakehold oftheissuesofattractivenessinpublicationandincreaseindistribution.

Youwillstudytherelativemerits,intermsof sales'valueandcosts,of theappealofthisorthat formorcolourtotheeye oftheprospectivereaders.

Buthavingsucceededin liftingsoencouragingly yourdistributionfigures, youwillundoubtedlyconcentratemuchofyour thinkingonthispoint.

Theapostolateofthe pressisoneofthemostimportantintheChurch.Distributionshareswithpublicationinthegreatnessand fruitsofthisvitalwork.

Distributionwillincrease inproportionnotonlytothe appealandworthofpublication,butalsotdthenumberandenergyofthedistributors.

Itwouldbewellthatyou engageasmanyCatholics aspossibletoworkwith youinthisnobleandmeritorioustaskofdistribution.

Youshouldendeavourto enlisttheinterestandenthusiasmofthepupilsof ourCatholicschools,andof themembersofourlayorganisations.

Makeknowntothem theimportanceofyour work.Tellthemofyour needformoreapostolicmen andwomen, boysandgirls, inorderthattheCatholic thoughtandtheCatholic slantonthingsmayreach moresectorsandpenetrate moredeeplyintotherhythm ofsociallife.

Thechildrenofour schoolsandcolleges,the membersofouryouthorganisationsarereadytobe stimulated;buttheyneed thestimulation.

ThedoctrinesoftheFaith andthewaysofChristian lifetaughtintheclassesof religioninstructedbythe priests, brothersandsisters needtobecomplemented bypracticalapostolicaction.

RoleOfChildren

Ihavealreadymadepracticalsuggestionsastohow thechildrenofourCatholic schoolscandosomuchto propagatethethoughtand waysofourRedeemerby caringforthetidiness, modernity, andvarietyof choiceofpamphletracksin theirparishchurchesand schools.

Thereisnoreasonwhatsoeverwhytheyshouldnot extendtheireffortstothe distributionoftheCatholic press.

Theycouldwellworkout rosterswherebytheycould beresponsibleforchurchdoorsales;evenarrangeto deliverthemtotheCatholic familiesintheirarea;and withtheutmosttactand prudenceseeiftheycould thendropthecopiesofthe Catholicpapers, withwhich theCatholicfamilieshave finished, intothehandsand

homesoftheirnon-Catholicfriends.

Butinorderthatthis apostolicactioncomeabout itisnecessarythatincessantlytheylearnfromthe mouthsoftheirpastors, brothers, andsisters, the apostolicapproachand understandingofChristian life.

Ifinthepreaching, teachingortalkofourpriests, brothersandsistersthe apostolickeynoteiswanting; ifpriests, brothersandsistersarenotconstantlycallingupontheirlaity, adults andchildren, toengagewith theminapostolicaswellas inmoney-raisingprojects, thenthelaitywillnotonly notbeengagingthemselves inthemissiontheChurchso urgentlyneedsfromthem; butalsotheywillbeleavingourschoolsandchurches withouteventheapostolic spirit.

Somuchcanbedoneby ourschool-childrenandby ouradults.Buttheyneed inspiration,encouragement, scope.

MaytheCatholicpress joinwiththeeducatorsof schoolandparishinfosteringthatmentality. The Catholicpressitselfwill helpitselfinfindingthe apostolicdistributorssuch asitsomuchandsourggentlyrequires.

AsIhavesaid,thecooperationofourlaityis readytobestimulated.But itdoesneedthestimulation.

Inthiswaynotonlywill moreeffectivework, humanlyspeaking, bedone, but moreblessingswillbewon fromheaventhroughthe effortsandsacrificesofso manymorecollaborators.
