BishopRaffertycommendedthepracticeofparticipatingintheannualretreatsconductedbythe societyandexpressedhis gratitudeandthatofthe Archbishopfortherelief providedbythesociety throughthebursaryfundin theheavyburdenplacedon thearchdioceseintheeducationofpriests.

Itwastheirdesirethat noboywhofelthimselfimpelledtoofferhimselffor thepriesthoodshouldbe deniedtheopportunityof enteringtheseminarybecause..ftheInabilityofhis parentstoPaytheprescribedfee.

Priestsassistedbythis generousworkofthesociey wouldthroughouttheirlives

Itwasannouncedthatthe CathedralbranchhadbookedouttheretreatofJune 23-29,butitwaspromised thatanymemberwho founditpossibletoattend onlythisretreatwouldbe accommodated.

`Iammorethandisturbed atthemembershipofthis societyandananalysisof thefigures_resentedbythe secretaryindicatesthatour numbershavedeclined," saidthepresident(Mr.B. Quinn)insubmittingthe resignationofhisexecutive.

OnMarch18,thedayofdeparturefor IndiaoftwoSistersoftheCongregationof OurLadyoftheMissions,Highgate,anunusualceremonytookplaceintheconvent chapel,presidedoverbyHisLordship,Bishop Rafferty,assistedbytheRev.P.Gavin.

ThecommunityentereC thechaftelinsolemnprocessionalorder,singingthe 'AveMarisStella',the hymntoOurBlessedLady invokedtoshowherselfa MotherandProtectressto theSisterssettingouton theirmissionaryjourney. HisLordshipthenintoned the`Veni,CreatorSpiritus' whichwascontinuedbythe Sisters'choir,afterwhich followedtheimpressive ceremonywhenSisterM St.Francisrenewedher perpetualvowsofpoverty, chastityandobedience.

Theoccasionalsermon waspreachedbytheRev. C.Cahill,C.Ss.R.whosaid thatthedepartureceremonyhadanaturalanda supernaturalaspect.

The,mustneedsbea certainsadnessforthese Sistersinleavingthose theyknewandlovedand inexchanginganaccustomedwayoflifefora newandstrangeone.

Buttherewasacompensatingsupernaturalside, too,thegreatjoyexperiencedinknowingthatthey wereansweringthecallof Christtogoforthandsave soulsandworkforHim andwithHim.

Whatsupremejoyto knowthateverythingdone underobediencewasparticularlypleasingtoChrist andparticularlyblessedby Him.

ThoseSistersdeservedto becongratulatedfortheir willingofferingofselfto beChrist'sinstrumentsin theredeemingofsouls.

Theyweretobecongratulated,too,oncarryingout thelongingofHisHoliness, PopePiusXII,whohasappealedtoReligioustogo outtothemissionfields tosavesouls.

TheCatholiclaity,too, owedthemcongratulations, forthosemissionarySistersweredoi-thework whichlaypeollwereunabletodoor.accountof hometiesandotherobligations. TheblessingorHisLordship,BishopRafferty,fol-

Therewerenodifficulties withsuchboyswhohad practicalfatherswhowould introducethemtotheHoly Namesociety.However, wheresuchboyswerenot soblessed,thepositionwas differentandtheirConfirmationsponsorsmightstrive togetthemintothesociety andinthiswaydosomethingpracticaltofulfiltheir obligatiorts. TheIndianProvinceof theCongregationofOur LadyoftheMissions,to whichthetwoSistersare going,haselevenHouses, situatedinIndia,Pakistan andBurma.TheP-ovincialHouseisatChittagong, inEastPakistan.

The tablishmentlargesteducationalesconductedby theSistersisatShillong intheAssamHills.Here theSistershaveateachers' trainingcollegeandaUniversitywithanattendance ofnearly300students.

Atothercentres,the SistersconductEnglishspeakingHighSchoolswith averageattendancesof400 children;andprimary schoolsforEnglish-speaking,KhasiandHindupupils.

TheSistersalsohave chargeofnumerousdispensariestowhichhundredsof patientsofallclassescome dailyformedicineandadvice.Manybaptismsare performedbytheSisters, especiallyamongthedying infantsbroughttothedispensaries.

AsayoungladhestudiedatSt.Peter'sDiocesan Seminary,Wexford.Attheageof17yearshewas chosentocompletehiseccelsiasticalstudiesatthe IrishCollegeinRome.

OntheFeastofAllSaints,1872,hewasordained tothepriesthoodatEnniscorthy.Shortlyafterwards hejoinedtheDiocesanMissionarySociety.Helived incommunityatEnniscorthyandconductedmissions intheensuingyearsundertheBishopofFerns.

OnOctober24,1911,heinauguratedamovement tocompletetheCathedralinhonourofCardinal Moranandfor17years,untiltheInternationalEucharisticCongressin1928,helabouredindefatigably tofinishthegreatCathedral.

Thefoundation-stonesforthecompletionofthe CathedralwerelaidonJune8,1913,withaCatholic Governor,SirGeraldStrickland,present.Never beforehadaCatholicGovernorattendedaCatholic ceremony.

AstatueinhonourofArchbishopKellywaserected togetherwithoneofCardinalMoran,atthefront oftheCathedral,whereitstandstoday.

Itwashisfinalpleasuretoofficiateataceremony atSt.Mary'sonDecember14,1930,whenitwas raisedtothestatusofaBasilica.

ThroughouthisepiscopateArchbishopKellyas ageneralruleeschewedcontroversyandreliedon lesscontentiousmethodsofindicatinghisviewson questionsoftheday.Occasionally,howeverhe couldnotavoidit.

"Isaythatifitisnecessarythattherulesshould bechanged,thenletthembechanged,"hesaid."But letnotCatholiclibertybeinfringedbymanacles putuponitsclergy.

HewarmlyapprovedthefoundationoftheCatholicFederationin1913andencourageditoverthe years,appearingonitsplatformsandgenerallysup-portingitsobjectives.

ArchbishopKellyco-operatedwithofficialmeasures tocombatthegriminfluenzaepidemicofthisperiod. evenofferingCatholicschoolbuildingstotheGovernment,butstronglyopposedofficialrefusalto permitCatholicstoattendMassintheopenair. Finally,hewonhisway.

ThelateJohnLaneMullinspresentedanaddressofthelaity,alsoaportraitoftheArchbishop inoils,andthepromiseofamotorcaronhisreturn toreplacethehorseandcarriagewhichhadbeen hismodeoftransport.

Thelaityweretruetotheirword,adwhenthe ArchbishopwasaccordedarousingreceptionatCentralRailwayStationonDecember7,1920,onhis return,anewmodellimousinewaswaitingtotake himtoSt.Mary'sCathedral.

Whenhespokeata"TeDeum"intheCathedral laterintheday,hisfirstcommentwas,"Thanksbe toGod"-aphrasethatfrequentlyfellfromhislips.

TheinaugurationofaCatholicbroadcastingservicetookplaceduringhisepiscopate-firstonStation 2UE,beginningonJanuary22,1928,andlateron 2SM.

Perhapsthemostmemorableeventinthelong episcopateofArchbishopKellywastheholdingin Sydneyofthe29thInternationalEucharisticCongress fromSeptember5to9,1928-theonlytimethis greateventhasevertakenplaceinAustralia.

WorldWarbrokeoutforthesecondtimeduring hiseiscopatein1939.Hewasnotabletoappear publiclyatthisstage,butonDecember3,1939,he issuedaPastoralLetterinwhichhediscussedCommunism,totalabstinence,mixedmarriages,Catholic Action,andothertimelymatters.

InMay,1940,hefollowedthiswithanotherPastoral,destinedtobehislast,withCatholicAction asthemaintheme.

Havana,Cuba,March3.-Anappealby Cuba'shierarchyfortheformationofa "governmentofnationalunity"toendthis country'stwo-year-oldrebellionhasbeen turneddownbyPresidentFulgencioBatista.
