FatherKirfacedahousingcrisiswhenhebecamemayorofDijonjustafterWorldWarII.The cityhadbeendamagedbybombs.Therewasnot enoughroomfortheworkers.

Thepriest-mayorconsultedwithhousingexperts andarchitects.Thenhespearheadedadriveto buildattractivelydesignedmoderndwellingsina ringaroundtheold,historiccity.Thesewell-planneddwellingsareevidenceofthecarewithwhich FatherKirpursueseverycommunitytask.They arecomfortable,capableofbeingexpandedtotake careofanincreaseinpopulation,ineXpensiveand efficientlyequipped.

Iamnotsureifhewas thefirstparishpriestin Wagin,butitwasin1912 thathepaidhisfirstvisit totheDarkanarea,asort ofround-upoftheCatholic settlers.

Mostofthefarmshad onlybeentakenupfiveor sixyears(somenotthat) andsoFatherMoloney,as hewasthen,wasthefirst priesttovisitus.

Iwasasmallgirlatthe time,andinmymindthe word"priest"wasconfused with"police,"butIsoon learnedthedifference.

WewereinDarkanone dayandsomeone,knowing wewereCatholics,tolddad thataCatholicpriestwas intown.

Somyfatherwentalong totellFatherMoloneythat hehadason,notyet christened.

Thatwasone"bush christening"whichtook placethatday,andthere mayhavebeenothers.

Itseemshardtobelieve now,thataCatholicchild wouldbewalkingbeforehe wasbaptised,butwedidnot getaroundmuchinthose days.
