Theprelatesaidthat Catholicsmustaskthemselves:"Whatcanwedoas r.individualstoinfluencepublicopinioninthematterof theracialproblem?"

"Thedutyofeachoneof us,istotakeupthestruggleinhisownpersonallife," hesaid."Iwouldsaythat asfaraspersonsofthe whiteraceareconcerned, themainobjectiveistodissolvebythewarmthof Christianlovetheidea wovenintothembytheir upbringingthatadarkcolouredskinisamarkof inferiority."

"Inadvocatingalittle friendlinessbetweenfellowparishioners,"saidArchbishopHurley,"Iamnot commandingthefullrange ofsocialexchanges.Such thingscannotbecommanded.Familyrelationships growoutofmanysubtleinfluences.Theyarenotorganised.

"Buttheneighbourly salutationwillbeginto lowerbarriersandallow thecharityofChristtodo itsgreatworkofhealing,

uniting,redeeming.sanctifying."

Becauseracialprejudice cannotbereconciledwith theChristianspirit,ArchbishopHurleysaid."itis therefore,thedutyofeach oneofustoeradicateit fromourhearts."

"This,ofcourse,willnot solveallourproblems.The SouthAfricansituationis notassimpleasthat.But avigorousefforttoovercomeprejudicewillbea bigstepintherightdirection.

HewasbornatthetownofMonaghanin1816.His fatherwasasuccessfulshopkeeperandhismother wasthedaughterofagentlemanfarmer.

HeinheritedadevotiontoIrishnationalismand zealfortheCatholiccausefromhisfamily.Listening tohisfather,hedevelopedanappetiteforthese mattersasquiteayoungboy.

GoodCatholicschoolsforunderstandablereasons wererareinUlsterwhenhewasaladandhegothis earlyeducationattheschoolofaPresbyterianminister,theReverendJohnBuckley.

Helaterincreasedhiseducationbyprivatestudy andattheageof20tookapositiononthestaffof theDublin"MorningRegister."aftercontributing tootherpapers.Soonhewasitssub-editor.

From1839to1842,withThomasDavisandJohn BlakeDillon,hefoundedinDublinthefamousIrish Nationalistnewspaper,"TheNation,"ofwhichhe wasthefirsteditor.

Theconferencewhichdecidedtofound"The Nation"washeldunderanelmtreeinPhoenixPark. SoonthepaperwashailedandreadbymostofIreland's8.000,000citizens.

Oneexpertwroteofit:"Seldomhasanyjournalof itskindexhibitedamoresplendidcombinationof eloquence,ofpoetryandofreasoning.

Duffy,meanwhile,hadbecomeassociatedwith DanielO'Connell,butinthesucceedingyearsthey driftedapartandconflictsinmattersofpolicy-developedbetweenthem.

DuffyeventuallysupportedtheYoungIrelanders. againsttheOldIrelanderstowhichthedeclining O'ConnelladheredandhehelpedfoundtheIrish Confederation.

ImpressedbythefailureoftheRepealmovement, thedeathofO'Connellandthedreadfuleffectsofthe famine,Duffyforatimeadvocatedrevolutionary measures.

"TheNation"wasseized,andDuffywasimprisoned. Afterfourabortivetrialshewasreleased,revived "TheNation,"concentratedonconstitutionalreforms, fcundedin1850theTenantLeagueandin1852representingNewRoss,CountyWexford,wasoneof40 IrishmenwhoenteredtheBritishHouseofCommons, pledgedtoTenantRightandIndependentOpposition.

HeWinsParliamentaryHonours

ButtheIrishgroupbrokeupinternally,someof itsmembersemergedasselfishplace-seekers,andin despairDuffy,in1855,retiredfromtheBritish ParliamentandmigratedtoAustralia.

Hewaswelcomedherewithenthusiasmatthe beginningof1856,andSydneyandMelbourneresidentsviedwithoneanothertohavehimsettlein theircity.

LikemanyotherfamousCatholicsoftheperiod,he wasaclosefriendofHenryParkes,whoofferedhim apostontheeditorialstaffof"TheEmpire."

Duffywasaguestatamemorablebanquetin SydneyattheoldPrinceofWalesTheatre,atwhich WilliamBedeDaileymadeoneofhisfirstbigspeeches. Butinthelongrun,itwasinMelbournethathe decidedtosettle.

Althoughhewasofamindtoavoidpoliticsinthe landofhisadoption,itwasnotlongbeforehehad succumbedtothelureofParliamentthatattracted manyanIrishman.

Tobeacandidateitwasnecessaryforhimtohave aproperyqualification,sohissupportersquickly ralliedroundandthesumofR.5,000wassoondonated.

Thus,inNovember-,1856,only10monthsafterhis arrival,CharlesGavanDuffffywasselectedtothe VictorianLegislativeAssembly.

Oneofhisfirstpoliticalachievementswasto sponsoraBillwhichabolishedthepropertyqualificationforMembersof-Parliament.

Hismonumentalachievementasearlyasthe'fifties wastheworkwhichearnedforhimthetitleofProphetofFederation.

ConvincedattheoutsetoftheneedforandinevitabilityofFederationintheyoungcolony,heproposed aselectcommitteetoinquireintoFederation,but couldnotgetthenecessarysupportfromNewSouth Wales.

Between1856and1865,whenhevisitedEurope,he heldministerialpostsinvariousVictorianCabinets.

Landquestionswerehismajorinterestsandas MinisterforLandshepassedanewLandActin1861,

whichaimedtomakecheaplandavailabletonew settlers;butdummyingandotherdevicesfrustrated hismeasures.

Hestayedabroadforseveralyearsandonhis returnin1867re-enteredParliamentasMemberfor Dalhousie.

HereturnedtohisadvocacyofFederationand evenmanagedtohavethequestionexaminedbya RoyalCommissionin1870,butinterestwasnotstrong enoughtokeephisproposalsalive.

InJune,1871,hebecamePremierandChiefSec-. retaryofVictoria.

Duringanothervisitabroad,from1874to1876,he declinedaseatintheHouseofCommons.

ReturningtoMelbournein1876,hewaselected MemberforNorthGippslandandin1877wasunanimouslyelectedSpeakeroftheVictorianParliament. Heretiredin1880,andleftAustraliaforgood, scttlingatNiceintheRiviera.Thereheliveduntil hisdeathin1905inhis87thyear.

HisbodywastakenbacktoIrelandforburial,and hisfuneral'inDublinwasavirtualnationaldemonstration.

Inlatterlifehepublishedaseriesofimportant books,mainlyonIrishaffairs,andresistedmovesto havehimre-enterIrishpubliclife.

Hsbook,"MyLifeinTwoHemispheres,"which appearedin1898,describedhisexperiencesinAustraliaandisasource-bookonAustralianhistoryof thesecondhalfofthelastcentury.

CharlesGavanDuffywasknightedin1873and madeaK.C.M.G.in1877.Hemarriedthreetimes, andhisdescendantshavedistinguishedthemselves inVictorianandAustralianpubliclifeforgenerations.

Oneson,SirFrankGavanDuffy,wholivedfrom 1852to1936,becameChiefJusticeoftheHighCourt ofAustralia,succeedingSirIsaacIsaacsin1930, whenhebecameGovernor-General.Hisson,Charles GavanDuffy,isaJusticeoftheVictorianSupreme Courttoday. London,March1.-Atotalof1,153personswroteintotheCatholicEnquiryCentre heretosaytheyhadbecomeconvertsin 1957asaresultofthecentre'sreligious instructionsbymail.

Thesefiguresandothers aregiveninthefourthannualreportofthecentre, whichwascompiledby FatherMichaelO'Connor, itsdirector.

Lastyear'stotalwas nearly45percentofallthe convertsknowntohave comeintotheChurchasa resultofthecentre'swork sinceitwasopenedfour yearsago.

Iamnotsureifhewas thefirstparishpriestin Wagin,butitwasin1912 thathepaidhisfirstvisit totheDarkanarea,asort ofround-upoftheCatholic settlers.

Mostofthefarmshad onlybeentakenupfiveor sixyears(somenotthat) andsoFatherMoloney,as hewasthen,wasthefirst priesttovisitus.

Iwasasmallgirlatthe time,andinmymindthe word"priest"wasconfused with"police,"butIsoon learnedthedifference.

WewereinDarkanone dayandsomeone,knowing wewereCatholics,tolddad thataCatholicpriestwas intown.

Somyfatherwentalong totellFatherMoloneythat hehadason,notyet christened.

Thatwasone"bush christening"whichtook placethatday,andthere mayhavebeenothers.

Itseemshardtobelieve now,thataCatholicchild wouldbewalkingbeforehe wasbaptised,butwedidnot getaroundmuchinthose days.
