D.M.,SouthAustralia:Hardandfast rulesarelaiddowndeclaringmarriageimpossibleafterdivorce,withnomentionof anyexceptions.
R.:TheCatholicteaching inthismatteristhatofthe NewTestament.InSt. Mark,10:12,weread:"If thewifeshallputawayher husband,andbemarriedto another,shecommitteth adultery."Thereisnohint ofanyexception.
St.Luke(16:18)writes: "Everyonethatputteth awayhiswife,andmarrieth another,committethadultery:andhethatmarrieth herthatisputaway committethadultery."Again thereisnohintofanyexception.
St.Paul(in1 Cor.7:1011)says:"NotI,butthe Lordcommandeth,thatthe wifedepartnotfromher husband.Andifshedepart, thatsheremainunmarried, orbereconciledtoherhusband."
SuchwasChristianteachingfromtheverybeginning, asitisCatholicteaching today.
Q.:IfOurLordmeantthat marriageisabsolutelyindissoluble,whydidHe say:"Whosovershallput awayhiswife,setting asideadultery,"or"ex-
ceptitbeforadultery," andshallmarryanother, "committethadultery?" Whyevenmentionadulteryspecifically,oratall?
R.:Thepassageyouhave quotedisfromSt.Matt. 19:9.Intheverynext verse,10,heshowsthatthe disciplesweresoshockedby thestrictnessofOurLord's teachingthattheysaid,if suchwerethecase,itwould bebetternottomarryat all!
Thatisasuresignthat OurLordwasnotpermitting divorceandremarriage, grantedadultery.Also,St. Matthewwaswellawareof theabsoluteteachingofSt. Mark,St.LukeandSt. Paul;and"knew"thathe wasnotcontradictingit.
What,then,istheexplanationoftheso-called"exceptive"clauseinSt.Matthew?Itisveryprobable thatitdoesnotreferto adulteryatall.Theusual Greekwordforadulteryis 1"moicheia."ButinhisexceptiveclauseSt.Matthew doesnotusethatword.
