PetitionsweresenttoEnglandseekinglegalbackingforhispermanentpresence.Butofficialdom,too, wasatworkanditcanbeseenfromtherecordstoday thattherewasneveranyprospectofthenecessary approvalbeingforthcoming.
GovernorMacquarie,whilstbeinginsomesensesa finemanandexcellentGovernor,washostileand prejudicedtowardsCatholicism,andFatherO'Flynn's missionwasdoomedtoshort-termfailurefromthe ojtset.
