CatholicPoliticalParties

Rome,Feb.14.-Apoliticalpartycannot claimtobethepartyoftheCatholicChurch evenifitsleadersareCatholicsandits ethicalandsocialdoctrineisdrawnfrom Catholicteachings.

Thisistheconclusionof JesuitFatherSalvatore LenerinanarticlepublishedbyCiviltACattolica, RomeJesuitfortnightly.

FatherLenersaidthat Catholicpoliticalpartiesare oftenfoundincountries whichhavesecularistic partieswithestablished antiireligiousandantiChurchpolicies.

InthesecountriesCatholicpartiesarenotworking forthespiritualandtemporalinterestsofthe Church,butarededicatedto the"politicalinterestsofall Catholiccitizens,"Father Lenerdeclared.

TheprotectionofCatholicswhoare"atthesame timeactivemembersofthe Stateandfaithfulmembers oftheChurch"constitutes themajoraimofpolitical partieswhichdrawtheir inspirationfromChurch teachings.

FatherLenersaidthat Catholicpartiesincountries withlargeCatholicpopulationsshouldnotbeconsideredidenticalwiththe Churchbecausetheparties representpoliticalinterests. Thesepartiesshouldbe lookedonasthepolitical instrumentsoftheState andnotoftheChurch,he said.

WhentheChurchspeaks "inthelightoftheprinciplesoftheGospelandof naturallaw"onthe"right doctrinewithregardto temporalmatterssuchas political, socialeconomicor internationalrelationsor whenshecondemsasocial, orpoliticaldoctrineascontrarytotheseprinciples, she doesnotenterintotheconcretesphereorthehistori-

calorderoftheindividual State,"FatherLenersaid.

Insuchmatters,theJesuit writerdeclared,theChurch "actsinamostnormal manner."

Incountrieswhichtolerateextremistpartiesorsubversiveorganisationsor anti-Church"laicist"movements,hesaid,"thepresenceofCatholicparties becomesanindispensable meansforthedefenceof thewelfareoftheStateand ofitsdemocraticregime."

Insuchcountries,Father Lenerargued, theconcentrationofCatholicvoteson stronglyCatholicparties becomesanecessitywhich takesprecedenceoverpreferencesforthestrictly politicalorsocialprogrammesofotherparties.

Thisissobecausebelieversnotonlyholdtheirreligiousinterestsabove everyothercontingentpoliticalinterestbutmainlybecauseCatholiccitizensdemandtherighttobe"citizensandCatholics,simultaneouslyandinastable manner,withoutanystruggleofconscience;members oftheStateandsonsofthe Church,"FatherLenerconcluded.
