Somehow,eitherthrough oneofCheshire'sfleetof loud-speaker-equipped buses,whichroamEngland explainingandspreading devotiontotheShroudof Turin,orthroughoneof hisleaflets-orarticleson thesubject("PicturePost" hadamagnificently-illustratedspread)Josieheard abouttheHolyShrolid.
Shewassurethatifshe couldonlyseeandtouch thisblessedObjectshe wouldbehealed,andlive andwalkagain.Soshe wrotetoGroup-Captain Cheshireandaskedhimto takehertoseetheshroud!

Nowcamethefirstof LeonardCheshire'sgreat schemes-oneforacommunity,self-supporting,livinginthecountry.Hecalled theprojectV.I.P.andfound alltoomanyex-servicemen, manywithwivesandfamilies,readytojoinit.
ButV.I.P.wasdoomedto failure.Ithadbeentried toooftenbeforeandsomehowhumannaturedefeats itsownends.
Throughquarrels,debts, lackofaccommodation, V.I.P.graduallyfellapart, althoughintheendithad acountrymansion,called Lecourttolivein,andDr. andMrs.Cheshirehad,on theProfessor'sretirement, soldGreywallsandgoneto liveinacottagenearby.
ArthurDykes,suffering fromcancer,hadbeenremovedfromLeCourtwhile Cheshirewasaway.Now hewashelplessly,incurablyill,andhisbedwas neededforsomebodywhom thehospitalcouldhelp.

Againstallwarningsand advice,Cheshirewentto PetersfieldHospitaland tookArthurDykeshometo dieatLeCourt.
Thesickmanwasalmost helplessandCheshireknew nothingaboutnursing.But heusedtoringupafriendly nurseat thingsthehospitalwhen gotbeyondhim.
Otherincurablessoon foundtheirwaytoLeCourt -particularlyonerather tryingoldladywhomthe othersknewasGrannie, whohadthegreatestobjectiontoremovingher socks.Shesaidthatthey wouldnotcomeoff;they neverhad.Buttheydid forGroup-CaptainCheshire.

Somehow,eitherthrough oneofCheshire's(feetof loud-speaker-equipped buses,whichroamEngland explainingandspreading devotiontotheShroudof Turin,orthroughoneof hisleaflets-orarticleson thesubject("PicturePost" hadamagnificently-illustratedspread)Josieheard abouttheHolyShrolid.
Shewassurethatifshe couldonlyseeandtouch thisblessedObjectshe wouldbehealed,andlive andwalkagain.Soshe wrotetoGroup-Captain Cheshireandaskedhimto takehertoseetheshroud!
Shewas,ofcourse,askingfortheimpossible.The ShroudbelongstotheexKingofItalyandiskeptin Turin,underlockandkey, inaspecialshrineinthe cathedral.

So,inNovember,1842,ittranspiredthatyoung PatrickFrancisMoranlefthisbelovedlandtofollow thevocationthatGodhadblessedhimwith,andto commenceoneofthemostfruitfulandillustrious ecclesiasticalmissionsthathasfallentothelotofa prelateoftheCatholicChurchanywhere-amission thatwastobesosalutarytotheFaithintheAustraliancontinent,ofwhichhecouldscarcelyhave thoughtatthatstage.
Beforehecompletedhistheologicalstudiesin Romein1852,theyoungIrishmanhaddistinguished himselfasabrilliantstudent.Hisoutstandnggifts manifestedthemselvesinhisresults,andinthefact thatonseveraloccasionshewaschosentoupholdthe teachingsoftheChurchbeforegatheringsofleading Cardinals.
HisordinationwasdelayedtoMarch19,1853, becausehehadnotattainedthecanonicalage.
Itwasafurthertokenofhisscholarshipandbrilliancethatforthenext14yearshewasengagedas aprofessor,teacherandresearchscholarinRome.
HesubmergedhimselfforyearsinthePapal archivesandlibrariesandproducedaseriesofpublishedstudiesastheoutcomeofhisresearch,particularlyaffectingIrishhistoricalrecords,andtherelationsofIrelandtotheHolySee.
In1856hewasappointedVice-RectoroftheIrish CollegeandProfessorofHebrewinPropagandaCollege.
ThefutureCardinal'sassociationwithAustralia canbetracedbackatleasttotheseyeaits.When ArchdeaconMcEncroevisitedRomein1859inconnectionwiththeestablishmentofadditionalSeesin Australia,hispetitionwasdrawnupandpersonally presentedtoPopePiusIXby-inhisownwords"anableandmostcourteousyoungfriend.Professor Moran,oftheIrishCollege."

St.Mary'sCathedralwasextendedunderhisdirection.TheCardinal'sPalaceatManlywasone ofhisundertakings.Schools,churches,hospitals, orphanagesandotherinstitutions,becamestanding monumentstoihistitleof"MasterBuilder."His eccleciasticaladministrationwas.enlightenedand scholarly.
Theranksoftheclergywereextended,thereligious ordersweredeveloped.Hiscontributioninthefield ofeducationwasenormous.
Asapublicfigureandstatesman,CardinalMoran acquiredvaststature.Hewasliterally,aleading FatherofAustralianFederation,andrecognisedas suchbyallobservers.Ofspecialinteresttodayisthe factthatheemergedasanoutstandingchampionof theworking-manandsupporterofthefamousmaritimestrikeof1890.
Workers,CatholicandProtestant,inthosehistoric days,regardedhimastheirforemostfriendand spokesman.Hewasoneofthefirsttoadvocatean AustralianNavy.HisassistancetotheAustralian LabourMovementwasmonumental.
HespokeatthefamousBathurstConventionin 1890andevenstood-unsuccessfullyasitturnedout -forelectionasaN.S.W.delegatetotheAdelaide Congress,fromwhichtheCommonwealthfinally emerged.
When,inAugust,1911,hepassedquietlytohis divinegoal,allsectionsofthecommunitymourned him.
