Hisinterestwasdetached andtechnical,although,he says,hedidfeelthatthis wasnotjustthe"bigger andbetterbomb"hehad alwaysadvocated,butsomethingloathsomeinitsdestructiveness.

Hehadverylittle patience,however,withthe remorsethatovercamethe Americanflyersandpervadedthecamponthe Marianasintheweeksto come.

Hewenthomefullof whathehadseentomake hisreporttotheNewBritishPrimeMinister,Mi. Attlee.

But,fromonecauseor another,LeonardCheshire wasneverthesameafter this.Perhapsitwasbecausetherewasnolonger awar;andwarhadbeen hismilieu.

Againstallwarningsand advice,Cheshirewentto PetersfieldHospitaland tookArthurDykeshometo dieatLeCourt. Thesickmanwasalmost helplessandCheshireknew nothingaboutnursing.But heusedtoringupafriendly nurseatthehospitalwhen thingsgotbeyondhim.

Otherincurablessoon foundtheirwaytoLeCourt -particularlyonerather tryingoldladywhomthe othersknewasGrannie, whohadthegreatestobjectiontoremovingher socks.Shesaidthatthey wouldnotcomeoff;they neverhad.Buttheydid forGroup-CaptainCheshire.

A strangefriendship sprangupbetweenCheshire andthedoomedArthur Dykes.Dykeswasafirm Catholic,andCheshire,too, begantolookforwardtothe regularvisitsofafriendly paiest.Bothpriestand Cheshirewerepresentwhen theoldmandied.

ArthurDykeslefthis friendabookcalled"One Lord,OneFaith,"written byMgr.VernonJohnston, anAnglicanclergymanwho hadbecomeaconvertanda priest. Hisremarksaboutthe CatholicChurchdisturbed Cheshire.Couldhe,sucha sticklerforveracity,have beendeceivedallthistime?

TheCatholicpriestwith whomCheshirehadbecome friendlywasnotimmediatelyresponsive."Discussit withyourAnglicanfriends" washissuggestion.

ButtheAnglicanfriends showedupverybadly,becomingabusiveratherthan informative.

Cheshireaskedforinstruction,butthepriest FatherClarke,wasinno

Thedayfinallycame when,rightinthemiddle ofthecourseofinstruction, FatherClarkeandhispupil bothdecidedthatnomore timeneedbelost,andthe distinguishedflyerwasreceivedintotheCatholic Church.

Sincethatday,GroupCaptainCheshire'sname hascircledtheglobe.His homesandfoundationshave multipliedand,inspiteofa prolongedperiodofillhealth,hehascontinuedto succourthecickahelpthe needyandcomfortthedying.watchedover,nodoubt, bythesouls'ofArthur Dykes,whodiedinpain, andofmanyofthosehe helpedtoexterminateinthe doomedcityofNagasaki.

Therearemanyfacetsto theuniqueandfascinating personalityofLeonard Cheshire.Onefurtherone isrevealedinanactivity whichmustnotgounmentioned,anditisthatwhich formsthesubjectofhis latestandmostpoignant book.

AChild's

Desire "Pilgrimage

to theShroud"isthestoryof alittlegirlcalledJosie, who,greviouslystricken withosteomylitis,was thoughttobedying.

Somehow,eitherthrough oneofCheshire'sfleetof loud-speaker-equipped buses,whichroamEngland explainingandspreading devotiontotheShroudof Turin,orthroughoneof hisleaflets-orarticleson thesubject("PicturePost" hadamagnificently-illustratedspread)Josieheard abouttheHolyShrolid.

Shewassurethatifshe couldonlyseeandtouch thisblessedObjectshe wouldbehealed,andlive andwalkagain.Soshe wrotetoGroup-Captain Cheshireandaskedhimto takehertoseetheshroud!

Shewas,ofcourse,askingfortheimpossible.The ShroudbelongstotheexKingofItalyandiskeptin Turin,underlockandkey, inaspecialshrineinthe cathedral.

Itisexhibitedforvenerationbythefaithfulonly onceortwiceinevery generation.

ButCheshire,having visitedJosieatherhome andgottoknowhermother andfatherandsmallsister, decidedhewoulddevotehis leavetoJosie,whoseheart wasfixedandimmovable.

Thereweredifficulties withoutend.Cheshirehim-

Themomentofunbearablepoignancycameatlast andthecasketcontaining thismostpreciousofrelics waslaidacrossthelittle cripole'sknees.

Whatdidshefeel?Was shecured?Didamiracle occur?Thesearequestions whichcannotatpresentbe answered.

ButJosiehadherpilgrimage.Andsheisonlyone ofthousandsofpeoplewho havefoundfaith,hope, peace,andmanyother blessingsthroughtheenergy andenterpriseofoneremarkableman-Leonard Cheshire.

AtpresentGroup-Captain CheshireisinIndia.The storyofhisachievements thereisanothernearmiraculousaccountofthe triumphoffaithoverdifficulties.

Twoyearsago,Cheshire andabandoffriendsplannedtosetoffforIndiaby landinasecond-handbus -,vhichwastobebothhome andsleepingquartersfor :heexpedition.

Butsomeoftheparty werepreventedfromgoing atthelastminute-andso therewerenotenough drivers.Undaunted,theremainingvoyagerstookpassageonacargoboatand loadedtheirbusontoits deck.

EightAsianHomes

TheyarrivedinIndia withnoplansatall.But thissituationdidnotlast long,forinfluentialfriends werefound,asalways, whentheneedarose. Fromthesmallasbestos hut,donatedandbuiltona newly-clearedstrip of junglebyalocalbuilder, theCheshireFoundationhas spread,untiltodayithas sevenhomesinIndiaand oneinSingapore. Thesealltendtheneeds ofpeoplewhoaresuffering fromsomeincurabledisease andhavenohomeoftheir own. Theyareallfornon-infectiouscases,exceptthe oneatJamshedpur.This magnificent35-acreestate wasdonatedbya,Jesuit mission.Atpresentitisa homeforcrippledchildren, butasanatoriumforchronic T.B.patientsisincourseof preparation.

Itwasbecauseshewas ill,andbecauseLeonard hadgonetojoinher,andso happenedtobeinWashingtonattherightmoment, thathewenttotheMarianasandflewoverNagasakionthatfatefulday,the ninthofA,!gust,1945. Therehasbeenmuchuse.lessargueingbackandforth astohowmuch,orlittle, thatsearingexperienceaffectedLeonardCheshire's futureactions.

Hesayshimselfthathefelt littlecompunctionorcompassion,circlingslowlyin thebrightsummerafternoonandwatchingthe atomicclouddevourCatholicNagasaki. Hisinterestwasdetached andtechnical,although,he says,hedidfeelthatthis wasnotjustthe"bigger andbetterbomb"hehad alwaysadvocated,butsomethingloathsomeinitsdestructiveness.

Hehadverylittle patience,however,withthe remorsethatovercamethe Americanflyersandpervadedthecamponthe Marianasintheweeksto come. Hewenthomefullof whathehadseentomake hisreporttotheNewBritishPrimeMinister,Mi. Attlee.

But,fromonecauseor another,LeonardCheshire wasneverthesameafter this.Perhapsitwasbecausetherewasnolonger awar;andwarhadbeen hismilieu.

FailureAndRest

Nowcamethefirstof LeonardCheshire'sgreat schemes-oneforacommunity,self-supporting,livinginthecountry.Hecalled theprojectV.I.P.andfound alltoomanyex-servicemen, manywithwivesandfamilies,readytojoinit.

ButV.I.P.wasdoomedto failure.Ithadbeentried toooftenbeforeandsomehowhumannaturedefeats itsownends.

Throughquarrels,debts, lackofaccommodation, V.I.P.graduallyfellapart, althoughintheendithad acountrymansion,called Lecourttolivein,andDr. andMrs.Cheshirehad,on theProfessor'sretirement, soldGreywallsandgoneto liveinacottagenearby.

ArthurDykes,suffering fromcancer,hadbeenremovedfromLeCourtwhile Cheshirewasaway.Now hewashelplessly,incurablyill,andhisbedwas neededforsomebodywhom thehospitalcouldhelp.

IncurablesGather

Againstallwarningsand advice,Cheshirewentto PetersfieldHospitaland tookArthurDykeshometo dieatLeCourt.

Thesickmanwasalmost helplessandCheshireknew nothingaboutnursing.But heusedtoringupafriendly nurseat thingsthehospitalwhen gotbeyondhim.

Otherincurablessoon foundtheirwaytoLeCourt -particularlyonerather tryingoldladywhomthe othersknewasGrannie, whohadthegreatestobjectiontoremovingher socks.Shesaidthatthey wouldnotcomeoff;they neverhad.Buttheydid forGroup-CaptainCheshire.

A strangefriendship sprangupbetweenCheshire andthedoomedArthur Dykes.Dykeswasafirm Catholic,andCheshire,too, begantolookforwardtothe regularvisitsofafriendly p"iest.Bothpriestand Cheshirewerepresentwhen theoldmandied.

ArthurDykeslefthis friendabookcalled"One Lord,OneFaith,"written byMgr.VernonJohnston, anAnglicanclergymanwho hadbecomeaconvertanda priest. Hisremarksaboutthe CatholicChurchdisturbed Cheshire.Couldhe,sucha sticklerforveracity,have beendeceivedallthistime?

Therearemanyfacetsto theuniqueandfascinating personalityofLeonard Cheshire.Onefurtherone isrevealedinanactivity whichmustnotgounmentioned,anditisthatwhich formsthesubjectofhis latestandmostpoignant book.

to theShroud"isthestoryof alittlegirlcalledJosie, who,greviouslystricken with osteomylitis,was thoughttobedying.

Somehow,eitherthrough oneofCheshire's(feetof loud-speaker-equipped buses,whichroamEngland explainingandspreading devotiontotheShroudof Turin,orthroughoneof hisleaflets-orarticleson thesubject("PicturePost" hadamagnificently-illustratedspread)Josieheard abouttheHolyShrolid.

Shewassurethatifshe couldonlyseeandtouch thisblessedObjectshe wouldbehealed,andlive andwalkagain.Soshe wrotetoGroup-Captain Cheshireandaskedhimto takehertoseetheshroud!

Shewas,ofcourse,askingfortheimpossible.The ShroudbelongstotheexKingofItalyandiskeptin Turin,underlockandkey, inaspecialshrineinthe cathedral.

Itisexhibitedforvenerationbythefaithfulonly onceortwiceinevery generation.ButCheshire,having visitedJosieatherhome andgottoknowhermother andfatherandsmallsister, decidedhewoulddevotehis leavetoJosie,whoseheart wasfixedandimmovable. Thereweredifficulties withoutend.Cheshirehim-

Twoyearsago.Cheshire andabandoffriendsplannedtosetoffforIndiaby landinasecond-handbus whichwastobebothhome andsleepingquartersfor theexpedition. Butsomeoftheparty werepreventedfromgoing atthelastminute-andso therewerenotenough drivers.Undaunted,theremainingvoyagerstookpassage'onacargoboatand loadedtheirbusontoits deck.

TheyarrivedinIndia withnoplansatall.But thissituationdidnotlast long,forinfluentialfriends werefound,asalways, whentheneedarose.

ThepriestlycareerofthefutureCardinalwas influencedbyhisuncle,Dr.PaulCullen,alsodestined tobecomeaPrinceoftheChurch.Dr.Cullenwas RectoroftheIrishCollegein'Romewhen,in1842,he visitedLeighlinbridgeandsoughtpermissionofhis nephew'sguardianstoallowtheirchargetogoto Rometocommencehisecclesiasticalstudies.

TheSocialistFederation withdrewfromtheDutch CouncilofTradeUnionsin June, 1954,afterthe nation'sCatholichierarchy issuedapastoraladvising Catholicsnottojointhe socialistunionnorthe LabourSocialistparty.
