ToProtestantsweshould talkCatholicism,notProtestantism;Catholicismand notCommunismtothecommunist.IngoingtoaBuddhist,talkinapositiveway aboutCatholicism!

Theprincipleshouldbe

Butwecannotworkthe miracles.True,wecannot, butthatisnotnecessary/. WepointtotheChurch thoughwedidnotfoundit, andwepointtothemiracles whichwehavenotworked.

Thisquestionofmiracles is,Ithink,pivotal,andyet modernapostleshipdefinitelyneglectsthisaspertof things. Indeed,weareinclinedto thinkthatweare,soto speak,stoppingdownifwe pointtothemiraculous,as iftheintellectistheplane onwhichwemustoperate andthatwebecomealittle childishbybringinginthe miraculous.

Hisuncle,FatherBedeBrewer,whowasthePresidentoftheEnglishBenedictinecongregationatthe time,arrangedhiseducationattheActonBenedictine school,whichheenteredin1805,aged11.

OnJuly,1810,hewasclothedwiththeBenedictine habit.Itissaidthateveninthosedayshiscolleagues calledhimthe"ArchbishopofBotanyBay."

HemovedontoDownside,whenthecommunity wasfoundedtherein1814,andwasordainedby BishopPoynteronMarch4,1819.

Afterordinationheservedasprefectnovice-master andsecretarytothePresidentGeneral,andonJune 29,1834,wasconsecratedVicar-ApostolicofNew HollandandVanDiemen'sLandandtheadjoining islandsbyBishopBramston,Vicar-Apostolicof London,inhisprivatechapel.

Thepreviousyearhehaddeclinedanappointment totheSeeofMadrasandearlierstilltoMauritius.

ABishopcolleaguesaidofhimatthetimeofhis appointmentthathehad"agoodhead,abetterheart andanoverflowingzeal."

HisstandingatDownsidemaybegaugedfromthe factthatthePriorpetitionedtheHolyFathertoleave himthere,sincehewas"thecolumnandmainstay oftheestablishment."

OnMarch27,1835,Dr.Poldingsailedonthe "Oriental,"fromLiverpool.Withhimwerethree priests,threesub-deaconsandtwocatechists.Irish labourersattheLiverpooldockscheeredastheship setoutonitsvoyage.Australia'sfirstBishophad setoutforthelandofhisadoption.

OnSeptember13,1835,Dr.Poldingandhismissionarycolleagues-lessonepriest,FatherClement Fisher,whodiedatsea-arrivedinSydney.OnSunday,September20,theBishopaddressedhisflock forthefirsttimefromthepulpitoftheunfinished St.Mary'sCathedral.Significantly,perhaps,itwas theFeastoftheSevenDoloursofOurLady.

AtthetimeofBishopPolding'sinstallation,there wereabout20,000CatholicsinN.S.W.and7,000in Tasmania.Therewerehalfadozenpriestsinthe colony.

TheformerresidenceoftheheadoftheAnglican Church,ArchdeaconScott.atWoolloomooloo,was rentedforBishopPolding.

WithinayearSt.Mary'sseminarywasoperatingin theBishop'sresidence.Halfthehousewasusedas aboardingschoolforthesonsoflocalCatholics.

BishopPolding'sfirstgiftfromhisflockwasacarriage andhorses.

TheBishopworkedlikeanyotherpriest.Confessionswereheardeveryday.Insomecasesthe penitentshadnotbeentoConfessionfor40years. Baptismsandmarriagestookplaceat10o'clockevery morning.

Hospitals,gaolsandhomeswerevisiteddaily.At nightconvertswereinstructed.TheBishop,and priestssaidtwoMasseseverySunday.Soon,more churchesandschoolswereunderconstruction.

Theconvictsectionofthepopulationreceived specialattention.TheBishop,liketheotherpriests, madeithishabittosayMassandministerinthe gaols,convictbarracks,penalsettlements,andthe femalefactoryatParramatta,thelatterdescribed asa"sinkofabomination."Daily,bishopandpriests mingledamongthechain-gangs.

Whenanewconvict-shiparrived,theGovernment authoritiesputallnewCatholicconvictsinhischarge forafewdays.

Itwasestimatedthatbetween1836and1841at least7,000convictsweregivenretreatsofatleast 10days.

AsDr.UllathornesaidofBishopPolding'slabour fortheconvicts:"Hepreachedtothem,taughtthem theirCatechism.weptoverthem,pouredtheover-, flowingtendernessofhisheartintothem."

WithinafewmonthsoftheBishop'sarrivaleven thepublicauthoritiesreadilyacknowledgedthe noticeableimprovementin_thecolony-andthiswas thepatternthatwastocontinueintheyearsthat yahead.

OnMay8,1836,hehadthejoyofperforminghis firstordinationinthecolony-thatofFatherSumner, andotheryoungBenedictineswereontheway-but BishopPoldingwasobligedcontinuouslytopressfor morepriests.

Earlyinthepiece,hehadbeenforcedtoturnwriter andapologistbydefendingtheChurchagainstthe attacksofAnglicanBishopBroughtonandothers.

Withinafewyearstheseminaryandschoolhad beentransferredtoSaintMary's.

Meanwhile,theranksoftheclergywerebeing increased,mainlythroughthelaboursofDr.UllathorneinEuropefrom1836to1838,andgradually Irishclergy,andlaterBishops,swelledtheranks.

UnderArchbishopPolding,thepresentfoundations oftheChurchinAustraliaweredestinedtobelaid.

Layschool-tachers,also,hadcomeandwereappointedtoschoolsatvariouspoints,andintheensuing yearsthestaffingoftheCatholicdenominational schools,andthewagingofthebattleforCatholic education,wasoneofhislargestresponsibilities.

HesawthefoundationofaCatholicnewspaperin thethirties,atonestageadaily,the"Australasian Chronicle,"editedbyAustralia'sfirstCatholicscholar, WilliamAugustineDuncan,whomhehadbrought fromabroad.

Onthelastdayof1838itwasBishopPolding's joytowelcometoSydneythefirstgroupofnunsfiveSistersofCharity,whoresidedathishomeat Woolloomooloobeforeproceedingtotheirconvent, thefirsttobeerectedinAustralia,atParramatta. ItssitewasthepresentConventofMercyatParramatta.

OnJanuary6,1839,BishopPoldingpresidedover agreatmeetingtoraisefundsforthecompletionof St.Mary'sandfordecadesheledthemoveforthe completionoftheCathedral.

OnNovember16,1840,BishopPoldingleftfor EuropetogethelpfortheChurchhere.Dr.UllathorneandDr.Gregoryaccompaniedhim.Hevisited EnglandandIrelandandthenwenttoRome,where hereportedontheAustralianmission.

Asaresultofhisrepresentations,theSeesofHobart andAdelaidewerecreated,anAustralianhierarchy wasestablished,andDr.Poldinghimselfwaselevated totherankofArchbishop.

ThenewArchbishopwasalsomadeanAssistantat thePapalThrone,appointedaCountoftheHoly RomanEmpireandgivenanassignmenttoreportto theHolySeeonChurchaffairsinMalta.

ThefoundationofthefamousLyndhurstCollege, neartheprntWentworthPark,whicheducated someoftheladingCatholiclaityfrom1853to1877, belongstothisperiod.

In1857,ArchbishopPoldingpresidedatthefoundationofSt.John'sCollegewithinSydneyUniversity InthesameyearhefoundedtheSistersoftheGood SamaritaninSydney-thefirstreligiouscongregation tobeestablishedinAustralia.

In1865-ayearafteritsfounder,FatherTherry, diedatBalmain-St.Mary'sCathedralwasdestroyed byfireandtheageingArchbishopPoldinghadto endurethisbittercross.

IthappenedonJune29,theanniversaryofthe Archbishop'sconsecration.Thelosswasatleast £50,000andtherewasnoinsurance.

MountingDifficultiesInOldAge

ArchbishopPoldingledthemoveforitsrebuilding andatemporarywoodenpro-Cathedralwaserected. But,in1869,this,too,wasdestroyedbyfire.

Fromlate1865to1867,ArchbishopFoldingwas againabroadintheinterestsoftheChurch.Hevisited MonteCassinoandwhilsttravellinginFrancehadthe unusualexperienceofbeingimprisonedasaresult ofamisunderstanding.

InAugust,1867,hewasbackagaininSydney. Afterthefireof1865,hisresidencebecamethe SacredHeartPresbyteryatDarlinghurst.

Theeducationalquestionwasalargeonenow, followingthefoundationoftheCouncilofEducation andtheabolitionoftheDenominationalScnoolsBoard in1866byHenryParkes.

TheappointmentofIrishBishopshasstirredup sectarianism,Fenianismwashavingitsrepercussions inthecolony,Orangeismwasrampant,aProtestant Associationwaswidespread,andaltogetherthesewere difficultyearsforthevenerableArchbishop.Still, hewasremarkablyactiveandcontinuedtomake hislongandarduousmissionaryexcursionsinto remoteareas.OnDecember8,1868,heblessedthe foundationstoneofthepresentSt.Mary'sCathedral.

In1870hesetoutforEuropeagain,toattendthe VaticanCouncil,butill-healthforcedhimtoreturn.

Earlyin1873,DomRogerBedeVaughanwasappointedhisCoadjutorandhetookalessactivepart indiocesanaffairs. HediedonMarch16,1877,intheSacredHeart Presbytery,Darlinghurst.About100,000peopletook inhisfuneralprocessionfromthetemporary Cathedral.

Whenhearrived42yearspreviouslythereweresix priestsontheAustraliancontinent.InN.S.W.alone atthetimeofhisdeaththerewerefivediocesesand 135priests.

InSydneytherewere130nuns,andchurches, schoolsandotherinstitutionswerenumerous. HewasburiedintheoldPetershamcemetery. HisremainsnowrestinthecryptofSt.Mary's Cathedral.

TheappointmentoftheAustralianhierarchymade historybecauseitwasthefirsthierachytobecanonreallyerectedinaBritishdominionsincetheReformation-theEnglishhierarchydidnotcomefor anothereightyears-andthestiritcausedlocally, whenArchbishopPoldingreturned,wasunderstandable.

OnNovember2,1842,ArchbishopPoldingsailed forSydneyontheTemplar.Withhimwerefour Passionistprieststofoundamissiontotheaborigines inQueensland,threeChristianBrothers,whoremainedonlyforashorttime,andmorepriestsand students.ThepartyreachedSydneyonMarch9, 1843.

ArchbishopPoldingwasagaininEuropeduring theperiod1846-8.Whenhereturnedfromthisvisit, therecamewithhimtwoBenedictinenuns,who foundedtheSubiacomonasteryontheformer MacArthurresidenceatRydalmere,knownas"The Vineyard."

Thesameyearof1848isauspiciousbecauseitsaw theordinationatthehandsofArchbishopPoldingof thefirstAustralian-bornpriest,FatherDanielO'Connell,aTasmanian.HealsoconsecratedBishopGould forMelbourneandBishopDavisforMaitland.

Duringhisoverseasvisitof1854-6,Archbishop PoldingrepresentedAustraliaattheCouncilwhich proclaimedtheDoctrineoftheImmaculateConception.

WhilstinRomehehadtheunusualexperience, irhisownwords,of"tumblingthroughafloorwith theHolyFather."

Protestantsareitsprincipalleaders.Itstwocentres arenowinMackinacIsland, Michigan(U.S.A.),andin Caux,Switzerland.

Evenwithinourown ranksithasbeensaidand writtenthatCatholicsmay withoutanyconcerncooperatewith,orbemembersof,MoralRearmament.

Thismatterrequires seriousreservations.

WedonotwishtoquestiontheintentionsofDr. Buchman,orofthosewho arepartofthemovement.

Nevertheless,wecannot hidesomeseriousandjustifieddoubts.

AttimesMoralRearmamentappearstowantsolely tocarryoutitsactionona

planeofnaturalhonesty where-astheRearmists think-itispossibleto bringtogethermenofdifferentracesanddifferent religions.

Itispointedoutinthis respectthatevenoutsideof MoralRearmamentthere areaconsiderablenumber ofpersonsofnoblespirit whoaregreatlyconcerned aboutthepresentspiritual disorderandthemoral breakdownofmankind.

Theyplantomakeefforts toreawakenintheworld theeternalprinciplesof thespirit,andtoneutralise thepoisoninjectedinto mankindbythepropagandistsofmaterialisticatheism.

Foraimssuchasthese, undercertainconditions andwithincertainlimits, certainkindsofco-operationbyCatholicsarepossible,butonlywhenthere isnodangerofindifferentisorofreligioussyncretism.

Ambiguous.Phrase

Mentionisfrequently madeof"God'sinspiration," ofChrist,oftheCross,Redemption,andtheChurch. Catholicswouldbepleased ifwordsandideaswerenot spokenorusedinasense whichisambigious,ifnot. erroneous.

Thefourabsolutes(that is:honesty,disinterestedness,purityandlove)cannotbutmeetwithourapproval,providedtheyexplicitlyderivetheirvalue fromtheonlyperfectabsolute,whoisGod.

Lastlytheremustbe seriousreservationsonthe practices(asintendedand carriedoutinMoralRearmament)ofmeditation (quiettime)anddivineinspiration(God'sguidance), thesharingwithgroup members(team)ofsenti-

ments,andofone'sown moralstate(sharing).

Itistherefore,notsurprisingifsomeautnoritativemembersoftheCatholichierarchyhaveforbidden thefaithfulintheirjurisdictionstotakepartin MoralRearmament.

Furthermore,asthepress ofmanycountriesreported inthespringof1955,the SacredCongregationofthe HolyOfficesentcertaininstructionsonthissubjectto theBishops-throughthe pontificallegations.

Ecclesiastics,secularas wellasregular,wereforbiddentotakepartinthe congressesoftheM.R.A. movement.Wherelaymen wereconcerned,theinstructionsread:"Itisnotproper thatlayCatholicsaccept leadingpostsinthemovement."

Inthiswaytheywillbe engagedfruitfullyinthe workwhichispropertoa layCatholic,calledbythe HolyFathera"consecratio mundi"(consecrationofthe world)thatmakesitscon tributiontothebuildingup andperfectingoftheMysticalBodyofChrist.

Assemblingonthedeck withtheexciteddogsand acrowdarmedwithweaponsofeverysort,wewere alldulywarnedbythe boatswaintotuckourtrousersintooursockssothat therodentsshouldnotrun upourlegs.

Theonlycoursewasto alterdrasticallytheintestinalcircuit,givinganexit fromtheothersideofthe stomach invadedwaswasnotyet bythedisease.

Thiswasdone.The patientappearedtobe cured;begantoeatagain,regainedstrength,andreturnedtoherwork.
