MotherColumba,whohad beenassociatedwithSr. Marthaoverthewhole periodof50yearswasrequestedtosaygrace,then thefamilyproceededtoenjuyaverytastyluncheon.

Whenfullycompletedthe schoolstogetherwiththe StateHighSchool,justa streetawayfromusandthe nearbyTuartHillState primaryschoolwillbeeducatingbetweenthreeand fourthousandpupils,thus makingoftheareaoneof theimportanteducational centresofthemetropolitan area.

WefeelthatFather Howellwoulddecryany descriptionofhimselfasa worldcrusader.Hequickly makesclearthatwhathe emphasisesisatleast1,500 yearsold.Ratherthanlook fornewangles,theCatholic worldhasforgottensome veryoldtruthsaboutthe Mass.Likeafreshoff-shore breezeFatherHowellwas able,duringhisvisit,to breatheranewenthusiasm inourmidst,

Sothat,evenifarationalist'sactionsareinaccord withthemorallaw,theywillnotbebasedonobligation.Thereisclearlynocompellingconstrainttobe honestifoneisinclinedtobedishonest.Sohonesty andothermoralvirtueswithitbecomemattersof expediency.

Forwhatauthorityhasthemoralcodeofthe materialist?TheobligationsimposedbyothersparentsandtheState-arevalidonlyinasmuchas theyrestontheauthorityofGod.Tosevermorality fromreligionis,consequently,todepriveitofalt motiveandallsanction.

HistoryunderlinesheavilythetruthoftheChristian position,i.e.thatmorallawhasitsultimateobligation ir.theWillofGodWhoimposesonmenasadutythe rightorderingoftheirnatures.Likewiseitsultimate sanctionisthelossofGod,entailedbyitsviolation.

Furthermoreanyonewithaneyeinhisheadcansee thatthereissomethingradicallywrongwithmen, someinheritedtaint(whichwecallOriginalSin). UnlesssupportedbyDivineaidmenarejustnotable toobservethemorallawforanylengthoftime.

ThestoryofthenationssincetheReformation bearsoutstartlinglythepropositionthatforanation whichhasattainedmaturity,moralityisessentially dependentonthereligioussanction,andthatwhen thisisrejectedmoralitywillsoondecay.

Overtheyearsadulteducationcoursesintheology andphilosophyhaveprovedatremendoussuccessin theEasternStates.Catholicpeoplehaveflockedto themeagertograspadeeperknowledgeofthetruth oftheFaithandtobeabletoanswerwithcertainty thequeriesofnon-Catholicfriends.Inanintellectuallylazycountry,amazingwillingnesstoundergo thedisciplinenecessaryforanystudyhasbeen shown.Boththepriestswhogivethelecturesandthe peoplewhoattendthemspeakwithenthusiasmof thiscomparativelynewadventure.Nowthatsuchan adventureis-goingtobelaunchedinWesternAustraliaforthefirsttime,itishopedthatCatholicshere wllwelcometheboonandco-operatewiththepriests whoarearrangingit.

CatholicsofAustraliaarejustlyproudoftheir educationalsystemwhichhasbeenbuiltuponsacrifice andsweat.Yetoursystemisnotfool-proof.When boysandgirlsonthevergeofmanhoodandwomanhoodleaveourschoolstheyarewithoutanyadequate meansofcarryingontheirreligioustrainingto measureuptotheirintellectualmaturity.Ofcourse, therearepossibleexceptions,likethefewUniversity studentswhohavetheirowncollegetokeeptheir Catholicmindsabreastoftheirsecularstudies.But forthegenerality,theirreligiouseducationstopswith school.Intimespastwhenstudentswereencouraged todomoresolidreading,theycouldeducatethemselves,tosomeextent,onthemoreimportantreligious topicsoftheday.Thisisnotsotoday,sinceeven thosewhoarewillingtoreadgoodbooksonreligion arebaulkedbytheirpricesandthenarrowcompass enforcedbyimportregulations.Theanswerforthe needseemstobeincoursesafterschoolinsubjects relatingtoreligiousformation.

Moreover,itisafatalmistaketothinkthatone canknowtoomuchabouttheFaith.Thesplendour oftheChurchishardlyeverseen--stillless appreciated-bymanylaymen.Afterschool-daysthe professionalmanmaymakegreatstridesinhisprofession,whilehisreligiousknowledgestaysatLeaving standard.Hecaneasilybecaughtupinthestream ofhissecularsurroundings,becomeperplexedwith difficulties,succumbtotemptations.Itisimperative thatwiththegrowthofsecularknowledge,the knowledgeoftheFaithshouldgrowatleasttoequal proportion.Otherwise,thereisthechanceofbecomingintellectuallyproudthroughnotusingones intellectonmattersofreligion.Moreover,the graduatebecomesadvancinglyineptinbroachingthe deepeningmaterialismpfourday.Ifhebenotperverted,hemayatleastbedoggedbyintellectual despondencyandinsolation.

InrecenttimesmenlikeFrankSteedhaveshown howinterestingtheologyandphilosophycanbe.He hasshownhowfactsaboutGodandangelsaremuch morecaptivatingthananyworksoffiction.Courses onthesesubjectswillhelpCatholicstobeproudof theirFaithandtotreasureitassomethingeminently reasonable.Perhaps,too,asafloweringoftheproposedadulteducationcoursesweshallseeCatholic leadersputtingforwardtheCatholicanswerto modernquestions.TheChurchintheWestneeds moreofherchildrentobewillingtodiscusstheir Faithopenlyandboldly-andwithunderstanding andwisdom.Thisisparticularlytrueinaworld wheretechnocracyisbeinghailedalmostasasubstituteforreligionandwherethesocialorder threatenstobemouldedexclusivelyalongthelines ofMarxistmaterialism.

TheconferenceoftheUniversityCatholicFederationofAustralia,recentlyconcludedinPerth,drewthebiggestcrowdofundergraduatesandgraduatesfromallStatesandNewZealand.

Housedinthemagnificent buildingsatSt.Aquinas College,onthehistoricCanning-river,andthenearby SantaMariaCollege(MercySisters),approximately300 studentsattended.

Theatmosphereofthe conferencewasajoyousone andmuchofthis,while partlyduetotheholiday spirit,andthefactofyoung peopleofsimilartastestand idealsgettingtogether, stemmedfromthefactthat FatherC.Howell,S.J.from England,introducedstrongly theideaofintimateandactiveparticipationofall Catholicsinourpriceless heritage,theMass.

Thistooktheformofthe revivaloftheage-oldand beautifulliturgy.Inrecent yearsconsiderableinterest hasbeenrevivedinitdue tothefactthatSt.Pius'X in1903,andsucceeding Popes(especiallythepresentHolyFather)have urgedthateverypublic Massshouldbecelebrated withactiveparticipationof thelaity.

"InpracticethismeansthatthepeopleshouldjoininthosepartsoftheMass whichbelongproperlyto them,andthatalector shouldtranslateforthem thosepartsoftheMass whichareimportant,but whicharevariable,and hencecannotbeunderstood inLatin."

Cupidalsoflittedaboutthesidelines,andmany romancesresultinmarriage withthenewly-wedsbecomingregularconference "fans."

Prominentamongstthe womenwasapioneerofthe movement,MissJoanDelaney,ofRandwick,Syd- ned.Perfectlygroomed,anddelightfultomeet,Miss Delaneyhasbeenamember ofU.C.F.A.fromitsinception,andhasattendedall 16conferencesofU.C.F.A. assuch.

Holdingforawhilethe positionofsecretary,she hasmadeandkeptfriends ineveryState.

Nagoya,Japan,Jan.3.-Anewsecular instituteof"housekeeperswithvows"shows promiseofsolvingaproblemwhichhasharassedmissionersinthiscountryformany years.

Asmissionstationsareset upinpaganareas,missionersfinditdifficultto getsuitablehousekeepers. Frequentlytheproblemis notsomuchfindingagood housekeeperasgettingrid ofonewhohasprovedunsuitable.

Frenchmissionerswho firstcametoJapanyears agohadagoodsolution. Usuallytheywouldhirea marriedcoupletoliveina smallhouseinthemission compound'andtotakecare ofthepriest'sresidence.

Whilesolvingthepriest's needforproperlycooked mealsandacleanhouseand church,italsoprotectedthe goodnameofthemissioner andtheChurchbyhaving amarriedcoupleattached tothemissionandnota singlewoman.

Frequently,however,difficultiesaroseunderthis arrangement,especiallyif themanofafamilydied. Inthiscase,thepriestwould findhimself,accordingto Japanesecustom,obligedto careforthedeadman's family.

The entirelyhousekeepersdepend upontheirmission stationforsupport,while theinstitutetakescareof theirreligiousdiscipline.If amemberoftheinstitute becomestooillortoooldto work,theinstitutecaresfor her.

Withsuchasystemin operation,missionersneed nolongerworryabouthavingtogetridofanunsuitablehousekeeper.Iftheone hehasdoesnotfillhisneeds andthoseofthemission tation,heneedonlyinform theinstitute. Further, priestsmaypresentcandidatestotheinstitute.After trainingandreligiousprofession,suchpersonsmay besentbacktothemission stationifthepriestdesires.

Esperanza Macaranas, studyingattheAdelaide University underthe Colombo chemicalPlan,andtaking dealsengineering(which withmachinery,as wellastheplansofthe plantinfactoriesandtheir blue-printingandlayout,as wellassomechemical laboratorywork),isinher thirdyearofafive-year course. Someofthepreliminary studywasdoneinthe Philippines,whereEnglish isalanguageintheschools anduniversities.

PhilippineStudies

The7,100islandsofthe Philippines,originallyconvertedtoChristianitybythe Spaniards,byFranciscan, AugustinianandDominican missionariesin1561havea greatfaithintheBlessed Virgin.

Thisisoneofthefew democratic governments amongtheEasternNations. Communismreareditsugly head,butthesolutionwas found,onthesurfaceatany rate,bygivingthebandit Communiststheirown farms,mostlyconsistingof 12acreplots.

"Studyingherehasbeen oneofthemostthrillingexperiencesofmylife,and isagreatexperience,and hasbeenwellworthwhile," saidMissMacaranas.

RogerWilliamVaughancamefromanancientand honourableEnglishfamily.Hewasbornin1836at theancestralhomeofhisfamilyatCourtfield,in Hertfordshire.

Hewasadelicatechild,whoshowednogreatdispositionforstudy.Eveninhischildhoodhesuffered fromaheartailment.

Itissaidofhimthatasachildheandhisbrother Herbert,wholaterbecameCardinalArchbishopof Westminster,playedagameofsayingMassand conductingecclesiasticalaffairs.

Hehadasensitive,artisticnature,beingdisposed toartandmusic.butnottohuntingorphysicalsports. Thekillingofananimaldistressedhim.

Mostofhisearlyeducationtookplaceathome, butonSeptember12,1850,whenhewasnearly15, hebecameastudentatDownsideCollege.

Hishealthandcapacityforstudyimprovedand onSeptember12,1853,shortlyafterhismother's death,heenteredtheBenedictineOrder,being receivedbyPriorWillson,wholaterbecameBishop ofHobart.

Ithasbeenrecalled,too,thatasayoungstudent heoccupiedthesamecellatDownsidepreviously occupiedbyDr.Ul!athorneandArchbishopPolding.

From1855to1859DomVaughanstudiedinRome andvisitedotherpartsofItaly,acquiringareputationasaserious,secludedstudentwithnodisposition forfrivolityorcommonplacetalk.

HeactedasaguidetoKingEdwardVII,then PrinceofWales,whenhevisitedRomeatonestage.

ItissaidthatPopePiusIXdevelopedacloseinterestinandaffectiontowardstheyoungEnglish Benedictinestudent.

OnApril9,1859,hewasordainedbyCardinal PatriziintheLateranBasilicaandcelebratedhis firstMassonApril15.HereturnedtoDownsidelater inthesameyear.

Aftertwoyears'missionworkatDownside,during whichhealsodidsometeachinganddevelopedhis oratory,DomVaughanwasappointedprofessorof metaphysicsandmoralphilosophyatthenewlyopenedBenedictineCathedralMonasteryofSt. Michael,atBalmont,nearHereford,whichwasthe EnglishhouseofstudiesofhisOrderatthetime.

AfterayearhewasappointedsuperioratBelmont, apostheheldfor10years,untilFebruary,1873.It wasstillrecognisedthathisheartwasweakbuthe labouredhardanddiligently,althoughhewasnot outstandingasateacher.

However,hehada!argeandscholarlyoutlook thatenabledhimtoadministersuccessfullythescholasticprogrammeunderhisadministration.

Hslargegiftsofspeechandoratorywerealready recognisedashisoutstandingaccomplishment.His colleagues,ithasbeensaid,identifiedanoteofbitternessandcynicisminhisearlyoratory.butthishe graduallyeliminated.

Atthisstageheemerged,too,asawriterand pamphleteer.Oneofhisfirstventureswasapamphletin1865called"WhatDothItProfitAMan?" inwhichhesupportedCardinalManning'sopposition tosendingCatholicstudentstoOxfordandCambridge, apolicylaterreversedbyhisCardinalbrother.

Hewrotealsoforperiodicalslikethe"Tablet"and "DublinReview."Inamemorablearticleinthelatter heonceadvocatedthefoundationofaCatholicUniversityinEngland-aprojectwhichwasunsuccessfullyattemptedafewyearslateratKensington.

Hismajorliteraryworkwasatwo-volumelifeof St.ThomasAquinasin1871-2,uponwhichheworked forfiveyears,readingeveryworkaboutthegreat saint.

Manyofhissermonsandconferenceslaterappeared inbookandpamphletform.Non-Catholicswere amongstthosewhoflockedtoSt.Mary'stohearhim preach.

Soontoo.hewasobligedtoassumetheroleof forthrightapologistandvigorouscontroversialist againstAnglicanBishopBarkerandothers.

InanearlyclashwithBishopBarker,whohad spokenofthe"fraudandforgeries"oftheCatholic Church,ArchbishopVaughanexclaimed:

"Itisanotoriousfactthatforthelast20yearsour accuserhasseldomallowedachancetoslipofreviling theCatholicChurch Arewetobeforeversilent?"

OnMarch16,1877,atthedeathofArchbishop Polding,whohadgrowntoloveandvaluehiseloquent youngCoadjutor,ArchbishopVaughansucceededto theSeeofSydney.OnJanuary13,1878,hereceived theSacredPalliumfromRome.

HeresignedtherectorshipofSt.John'sCollege, whereimportantimprovementshadoccurred,being succeededbyFatherAnselmGillett,O.S.B.Hisfirst publicactasArchbishopwasthelayingofthefoundation-stoneofthenewchurchatForestLodge.

Meanwhile,theeducationcontroversywasatits height.Ithadlongsincebeenrecognisedthatthe writingwasvirtuallyonthewallsofarasState-aid inNewSouthWaleswasconcernedandquietlythe foundationsofanindependentCatholicsystemhad beenlaid.

ArchbishopVaughanthrewhimselfintoaneloquent aridpowerfulleadershipoftheCatholicstruggle, particularlyinalongseriesofimportantspeeches andfivePastoralLetters,whichappearedinbook form.HisnamealsoheadedthenamesoftheBishops whosignedtheJointPastoralonEducationin1879.

Whenthe1879EducationActofHenryParkes becamelaw,theCatholiccampaignhad,inasense, failed;butitwasinnowiseduetotheleadershipof Archbis'hopVaughan.

Asearlyas1865,ArchbishopPolding,oneoneofhis visitstoEngland,soughttheservicesofPriorVaughan ashisCoadjutor.SeveraltimesArchbishopPolding appliedforhisservices,butitwasnotuntilFebruary 5,1873,thatPriorVaughanwasadvisedbytheHoly SeeinatelegramofhisappointmenttoSydney.

Shortlybefore,anEnglishBishophadsoughthim asaCoadjutor.OnMarch19,1873,hewasconsecratedCoadjutorArchbishopofSydneyatLiverpool byCardinalManning.

OnDecember16,1873,hearrivedinSydney,where hereceivedatumultuouswelcomefrom20,000Sydney Catholics,wholinedCircularQuayandtherouteto St.Mary's,lddbythevenerable-oldArchbishop.

"YoumaycallmeanEnglishman,ifyouwill.I amone;butIamaCatholicfirst,"hesaidinhisfirst address.

Withinafewdayshewasvocalandactiveontwo greatprojectsuponwhichhespenthimself-theeducationproblem,particularlythefirmfoundationofan independentsystemofCatholicprimaryeducation. 2ndthecompletionofSt.Mary'sCathedral.

OnarrivalhelivedfirstattheoldSacredHeart PresbyteryatDarlinghurst,whereArchbishopPoldinghadtakenupresidenceaftertheburningofSt.

ThenhemovedtoEveleighHouseinSt.Benedict's parish,butlaterassumedtherectorshipandtookup re..,idenceatSt.John'sCollegewithinSydneyUniversity,wherehecontinuedtostaythroughouthislifetimeinSydney.

Theuttermodestyandausterityofhisliving airangementsatSt.John's-werefreelycommented upon.Hisrooms.werelinedwithbooksandlacked allornament.Thefloorswerebare,andtheonly visibleemblemswereacrucifixandaskullwhich aiwaysrestedonhisdesk.

Hecontinuedtobetroubledbyheartweaknesses. Itissaidthat'hisroomandbedwouldvibratewhilst heslept'throughhisheartailment.

Helivedasolitarylifeand,whilstbeingaffectionatelyregardedbyall,madenopersonalfriends.

SpeakingatSt.John'sCollege,hesaidonthe occasionofhisfirstofficialvisitonMay15,1874:"No soonerdidmyeyes,lightonthisnoblepileofbuildings than,withthequicknessandvividnessoflight,I recogniseditasbeingpreeminentlyfittedtobecome themainfortressamongusofCatholicChristianity."

SoontheArchdiocesefeltthebenefitofhismethodicaladministration.Financialaffairswereplacedon abetterfooting.Educationalfacilitieswereimproved. His'orationswerekeenlyawaited.Hebecamea leaderoftheCatholiccommunityinastrikingmanner.HislargeandeloquentsermonsinSt.Mary's Cathedralwereamajoroccurrence.

Inamemorablespeecfrin1880atthelayingofthe foundation-stoneoftheSacredHeartSchool,Darlinghurst-thefirstschoolbuiltafterthepassageof Parkes'EducationAct-ArchbishopVaughanreferredtothehonourableoriginsofhisfamilyandhis ownpersonalrecord.

"Iherebychallengemyaccuser,totestthejustice ofhisaccusation,sopubliclymadeinhishighplace inParliament,againstmyloyalty."Archbishop Vaughanexclaimed.Theresultwasanapologyofa kindfromParkes.

In1883ArchbishopVaughanwasabletoreport that,whereastherewere53churchesandchapelsin thecolonywhenhearrivedin1873,nowtherewere 120.

Whereastherewere34schools,nowtherewere102 -80ofwhichwereconductedbyreligiousorders.

Atthetimehespoketherewere15,200childrenin Catholicschools,ofwhom10,916weretaughtbyreligious.

OnSeptember8,1882,itwasthejoyofArchbishop Vaughantoofficiateattheofficialopeningofthe modernSt.Mary'sCathedralinthemostoutstanding ceremonieseverwitnessedinthecolony,lastingthree days.

Morethan£102,000hadbeenspentandthe Cathedralwasfreeofdebt.Itisrecordedthatpart ofArchbishopVaughan'slabourforSt.Mary'swasto write3,000lettersofappeal,whichproducedabout E.20,000.

Asintheeducationquestion,Mr.WilliamBede DaileywastheArchbishop'sgreatsupporterinthe Cathedralproject.Thepealofbellsandaltar-rails wereArchbishopVaughan'spersonalgifttoSt. Mary's.

OnApril19,1883,aftermakingacompletevisitationofhisdiocese,ArchbishopVaughanleftfor EuropeviaAmericatomakehisadliminavisitto Rome.

HearrivedatLiverpoolonAugust16,1883,after aroughtrip,andvisitedsomeofhisformerBenedictinecolleaguesattheprioryatWooltonMuch.

HestayedthatnightataLiverpoolhotelandon thenextdaywenttotheLancashireseatofhisuncle, Mr.ThomasWeldBlundell,atInceBlundellHall.

IntheeveningheattendedBenedictionofthe BlessedSacramentandlaterretired.Inthemorning hewasfounddeadinhisroom.

HisfuneraltookplaceonAugust23,andhewas buriedinthefamilyvaultunderthechurch.

Later,in1887,hisremainswereremovedtoSt. Michael'sPriory,Hereford-therewassomecontroversyatthetimeabouttheirreturntoSydneyandin1946,underthedirectionofHisEminenceCardinalGilroy,theywerebroughtbacktoAustralia andinterredinthecryptofSt.Mary'sCathedral, wheretheymostassuredlybelong.

ThedeathofArchbishopVaughanin1883marked theendoftheBenedictineecclesiasticalrulein Sydney.

CommunistGovernment officialsinEastGermanyhavelongcarriedona struggletoalienatethe youthoftheregionfrom theirfamiliesandtraditions.

Aspartoftheirwidespreadandexhaustivecampaigntowintheyouthof EastGermany,theReds haveevenplacedwelltrainedandloyalpartymembers inkindergartens.Thusthe children'smindsarebeing formedinaccordwithCommunistdoctrinefromthe verybeginningofformal education.Thehoursduring whichreligiousinstruction canbegivenhavebeenso drasticallycurtailedand surroundedwithrestrictions thatitisvirtaullyimpos- sibleformassesofyoungstersto religiousreceiveanyformal trainingatall.

Thereligioussituationin Hungaryisifanything worsethanitwaslastyear, despitesomeobviouspro- pagandamovestomakeit appearotherwiseonthe partoftheGovernment whichwasfoistedonthe Hungarianpeoplebythe SovietUnionwhenit smashedthepeople'srevolutioninNovember,1956.

Ontheotherhand,Mgr. EgonTurcsanyi,former secretaryofHisEminence JozsefCardinalMindszenty, PrimateofHungary,has beenreportedinastateof completementalandphysicalcollapseinaRedprison. Mgr.TurcsanyiwasarrestedaftertheSovietinterventioninHungarylastyearandmostrecentreportsstatedthathewasbeingtriedfor"lootingGovernmentoffices"duringthe revolt.Thereportsstated that15youngHungarian priestswerealsobeingtried withMgr.Turcsanyi.The charge:distributingthetext ofapapalmessageandother"inciting"leaflets duringtherebellion.

Fortunately,the36membersoftheformerpeacepriests'movementhaveall, withtwonotableexceptions,submittedtotheirBishops. FathersRichardHorvath andMiklosBeresztoczyboth continueasmembersofthe HungarianparliamentdespiteaVaticandecreelast summerwhichforbadethe participationofHungarian priestsinpolitics. Thepoliticalsituationin Polandan4theagreementsbetweentheStateandthe Churchtherehavecreated thebestsituationforCatholicsinanyCommunist countries.

AlthoughtheGovernment stillimpedestheformation ofsomekindsofChurch societiesandrefusesrecog- nitiontosomeseminaries operatedbyreligiousorders, thepeoplearefreetoworship,nobishopsareinprisonandreligionmaybe taughtinthepublicschools.

Despiteprotestsfrom Catholicmembersofparliament,theGovernment continuesitscensorshipof theCatholicpressaswellas thepressingeneral.
