HisGracetheArchbishopofficiallywelcomedthedelegatesto the16thannualconferenceoftheUniversityCatholicFederationofAustralia(U.C.F.A.),heldatAquinasCollege,fromJan. 1-8.Morethan260graduatesandundergraduatesfromallthe StatesofAustraliawerepresentfortheopeningoftheconference inthespacioushallofAquinasat7.30p.m.onJan.1.Some80 furtherdelegatesarrivedonJan.2.

thefirstheldinWestern Australia.

Aconferencehadnow beenheldinthecapitalcity ofeachState-afinedemonstrationoftheunion existingbetweenthesocietiesmakingupthefederation.Intime,hehoped, rCanberrawouldbethesite ofaconference.

P Mr.JusticeMcClemens,Holinessanexpressionof presidentofU.C.F.A.,spokeprofoundgratitudeforhis first.Itwasagreatplea-'thoughtful,encouragingand rsureforhimtobepresentpaternalmessage,coupled attheconference,hesaid,withsentimentsofunswervingloyalty,devotionand affectiontowardshimwho bearsthetriplecrownand wearstheRingoftheFisherman. HisGracealsoexpressed hisgratitudetotheHoly Father'spersonalrepresen- tative,HisExcellencythe ApostolicDelegate,whohad senthisgoodwishesforthe successoftheconference andwhowasverykeenly interestedintheactivities oftheFederation.

Hethenreadatelegram ofgoodwishes,received fromArchbishopYoungof Hobart,wheretheprevious conferencehadbeenheld.

ReligionParamount

TheMurrayreporthad rightlystressedthenecessityofgivingtheleaders ofthenationabalanced, well-rounded, education. Scienceandtechnology wouldnotbehumanely usedunlessthosewhospecialisedinthemalsoreceivedtraininginthe humanitiesand.ofallthe humanities,religionwasthe mostimportant.

TheArchbishopsaidhe wasprivilegedtoopenthe 16thannualconferenceof the FederationUniversityCatholic ofAustralia.

Forthefirsttimeinits historyitwasbeingheldin WestAustraliaandhewelcomedallthedelegatesto ourcityandState.

Twohundredandthirty delegateshadcomefromall partsofAustralia.His Gracethankedthemfor travellingthethousandsof milesthatkeptthemapart. WestAustraliaopenedits armswideinwelcome.

Theywerelearnedinthe learningoftheirtime:they werealsowise.Asthe mottoofourUniversity"SeekWisdom"-remindedthem,learningandwisdomarenotthesame. Thewisemanknewmany facts,buthealsosawthem intheirrightperspective, hadorderinhislifeaswell asinhismindandwaswillingtobowdownbeforeInfiniteIntellectandthewisdomofHimWhowasborn atBethlehem.

WemustcongratulatetheNational Theatrefortheseasonof"Macbeth,"producedbyMr.PeterSummerton,whichitis presentingintheSunkenGardenattheUniversity,as:)JrtoftheCityofPerthFestival.

Theplaywasprc,ented withacortinuuus wof action,withnone the pauseswhichsrmetimes maritspresentathrina theatre.Theproducerused hislargeplayingareato verygoodeffect,giving movementandpacrtohis production.

Thispacewaswellsuited tothetellingofthesioryof civilstrifeandviolence whichfollowedMacbeth's actofregicide.

Itwasnotwellsuitedto theexpositionofhecharactersofMacbeth',idLady Macbethintheirliloquies andintheirscenes,ogether. Andthisexprsitiunisthe coreoftheplay.

Weareinnodoubtasto thestandardsbywhich Macbeth'sconductshOuld bejudged.Theyarestated quiteclearlyintheplay.

TheyarerejectedbyMacbethandhiswife,andfrom theiractofrejectionstem thefrightfulconsequences whichculminateintheultimatedestructionofthese strong,forcefulandonce noblecharacters.Thisis theessenceofthestory.

Thetextaboundsinreferencestothedarknessof Macbeth'scrime,tothedisruptionofthenaturalorder attendantonit,andtothe preternatural influences whichinfluenceMacbeth andwhirheventuallydominatehislifeanddestroyhis capacityforaction.

Ithinkitfairtosaythat Mr.Summerton'sproduction didnotgivesufficientattentiontotheseinfluences.

Takeforexamplethe witches.Thesixladiesin questionworkedhard.But bothinappearanceand

voicetheyweregrotesque, ,not Theyweremoreasymbol ofasecularisedHalloween thanoftheforcesofdarkness.Onecouldsimplynot imaginethesegirlsseducingatough,warriorlord.

Onthesamegeneral groundsIthinktheproducermadeamistakeinclosingthefirsthalfoftheplay (theendofActII)witha rmimeofMacbeth'scoronation,

In'thismimeaBishopis, withoutanypreliminaries, abouttoplacethecrownon Macbeth'sheadwhen,under some sumablyemotional(andpremoral)strainhis handslipsandhedropsthe crown.

Melodramatic,unnecessaryandoutofplacein greattragedy.Itlessened thedramaticimpactofthe playbyhighlightingaquite unnecessaryelementof sheersuperstition.

Macbethwasnotdestroyedbysomeoneputtinga hoodooonhim:hewasdestroyedbyhisownactions.

Somuchforgeneral points.Inthetitlerole,Mr.

RonGrahamgaveacreditableperformance.Hehas agoodvoiceandanimpressivedelivery..Whenexpressinghimselfthrough actionhewasconvincing, butinhissoliloquieshedid notgiveusthefear,the awe,'egretlonelinessand finallythedisintegrationof theman.

Inhis''sleepnomore,' Macbethhathmurdered sleep,"andinthepoignant, lyricalpassagewhichfollows,hedidnotconveythe softnessoftheimagerynortheterriblesenseofloss whichMacbethisexperiencing.

IthinkthatMr.Graham's naturalpowerwouldhave beenheightenedhadhe adoptedmoreofthegrand mannerinhisplaying,and hadhetakenhistimeand observedthedisciplineof thelanguage,ratherthanat alltimesmaintainingapace moresuitedtoamodern, naturalisticpiece.

Tomymindthiserrorof emphasiswassharedby Mrs.DorothyKrantzas LadyMacbeth.Inher openingscene,inwhichshe hadtheaudiencecompletely inherhand,Mrs.Krantz tookthingstooquickly.

Shehastheauthorityto deliverthelinesbutshe sacrificedthisauthorityand withitthedignityofthe rolebysweepingthrough thesceneandmarringher deliverywithunnecessary movement.Alsoshetendednottovarysufficientlythepitchofhervoice.

toCelebrate

Mrs.Krantzwasather mostpowerfulinthebanquetscene,whenshestrove desperatelytobringher husbandoutofhisdementedcondition.Butthevocal fireandtheintensitywhich sheshowedherewerenot wellsuitedtohersleepwalkingscene.

Atthisstagethecharacterhaslostallcapacityfor actionandvirtuallyall rationality..Mrs.Krantz couldhaveachievedmore bytheuseofhalf-tonesand byshowingtheemptiness ofalostsoul.

Ofthesupportingcharacters,MissFaithClayton wasoutstandingasLady Macduff.Hervocalcontrol andmovementswereexcellent,andshemadeaminor sceneahighlightofthe production.

GeoffHavilandinthe smallroleofhersonshowedamostunusualeaseand anengagingpersonalityto giveanimpressiveperformance.Mr.KenGoodletdid verywellasMacduff.He hasagoodfeelingforverse andconsiderablestrength.

Mr.RobertShurman's settingwasveryeffective, aswasMr.JohnSkinner's lighting,thoughIthinkhe mighthavedonemoreto emphasisethereferencesto darknessandthedisruption ofnature.

Mr.NeilHunsley'scostumeswereonthewhole good..Howeveronemust exceptthecoypinkcrea- tionsinwhichDuntanand hissonsappearedatthe beginningoftheplay.PerhapsIamshowingignoranceonthispoint,andpink hassomeparticularsignificanceintherobingofthe royalhouseofScotland.

Ifso,apologies.Butbe thatasitmay,itisafact thatpinkisadifficultcolour togetawaywith,andMacbeth'sappearanceinthis distressingcolourathis coronationwasalmosttoo much,particularlyashis ladywasswathedinanunbecomingshadeofblue.

Moreseriouswasthe dressingofsomesortof clericinplainhessiancut roughlytosuggestaFranciscanhabit,andthisina periodwhichpredatedSt. Francis'birthbyabout200 years. AlsotheBishop'svestmentsseemedtolack authenticity.Theywere neitherRoman,ampleRomannorGothic.

Onelastword.Thisis oneofthegreatestplaysof alltime.Donotmissthis presentproduction,itiswell worthyourattendance. -KHR

TheChristianfaithurges mantotheachievementnot onlyof orderhumanunityand ineternallife,but alsototheformationofa unitedandenrichedhuman community-eveninternationally-inthislife.

Itisanidealthatwill neverbefullyachievedbecauseitwillbehinderedby thedivisivenessofsin, whichwillremainwithman whiletheearthlycitylasts, butthesearchforitisintendedbyGog,andthereforeurgedandsupported bythereligionofChrist.

Thestatementthathuman institutionsaretobe broughtunderthedominationofChristandaretobe, inasense,Christianised, willbeoffensivetomany people-e.g.tonon-Christians,andtothosefewwho stillholdtheoldliberal ideathatreligionandsecularaffairsshouldnotmix.

Further,whenaCatholic makes otherthatstatement,many Christianswhoare nothamperedbytheold liberalism,evenmanyof hisfellowCatholics,will starttogetrestive.Thesuspicionimmediatelyarises thatsomeformofCatholic totalitarianism,someform of"clericalism"isbeing projected.

Thesuspicioncouldbe 'rightofcourse,depending ontheviewsoftheindividualCatholicwhomakes thestatement.Thereare certainlyCatholicsinthe worldtodayinwhomthe attitudesofpastcenturies arenotdead.

Speakingofthenon-formalisedjnstitutionsconnectedwiththepropagation ofthehumanrace,Fr. Smithsaidtheremustbe

anintelligentandprecise re-statementofthemeaningoflifeintermswhich hadmeaningforcontemporarylivingconditions.

Therelationshipbetween idealsandpracticalconduct mustbetaughtandlived inawaythatwasboth understandableandcompellingforpresent-day Catholics.

Contributions of the clergyandtheCatholiclay intellectualinthismatter ofre-statementwouldbe decisive.

Secondly, programmes mustbeintroducedtosup- portthewayoflife,apat- ternofrelationships,which didnotincludearticial contraception. Therefore girlsmustbepreparednot onlyfor motherhoodmarriage,butfor asaclearand importantvalue;youngmen mustbepreparedlikewiseforfatherhood,andmust betaughtthevirtuesof prudentsavingandrespon- sibility.

Heavilyburdenedhouseholdsmayneedtobehelped byrelatives,orintheirabsencebyparishneighbours.

Programmesforadequate housing,familyendowment, educationbenefits,etc. shouldbeinitiated-normallybyCatholiccivic leaders-andsupportedas nearlyaspossible,by Catholicsasabody.They areabody,ofcourse,the MysticalBodyofChrist.

Inaddition,theremust beanadequateandintelligiblestatementofthe Catholicpositioninthe matter-onethatisnot merelydogmaticbut psychologicalandsociologicalaswell-itsvurpose beingtodrawotherstoan intellectualandemotional acceptanceofthesameattitudesbyapresentationthat makesthoseattiudesand theirresulteminentlyattractiveandintellectually satisfying.

Thereshouldalsobean intelligentandinformed analysisandcriticismofthe causesofthechangesfor theworseinattitudes towardssexandfamilylife. LessermenlikeBacon,JamesandKantallgavedefinitionsandallgavepartialtruths.Inmoremodern timeswehavetheviewofCardinalNewmaninhis "IdeaofaUniversity."Itisthateducationisthe preparationforknowledge,anditistheimpartingof knowledgeinproportiontothatpreparation.Tolater thinkersonthesubject,likeFatherEdwardLeen, Newman'sdefinitionisnot,completeforheneglects 'theverypracticalpoint-thetrainingforalivelihood.

FormanyAustralians,withtheirdistrustofthe intellectual,thissearchseemsauselessone.Forothers, however;whoareresolvedtobuildabetterworld,the perfectionofeducationinallitsfacetsisfundamentaL Yetwhiletheyrightlyseethattoreorganisesociety isnecessarytobeginwitheducation,manydonot seewhatallhistoryproclaims,namelythatonlya Christianoutlookoneducationcanbringorderto theworld.ThepracticalquestionfacingourCatholic intellectualsishowaretheygoingtogainthefullness ofthisChristianoutlookandteachittoothers?Or tobemoreparticular,howisChristgoingtoreign inthem,andthroughthemintheworldatlarge?

WhentheW.A.-NewmanSocietyturnedoutinfull forcelastweektowelcometheirfriendsfromtheEast attheU.C.F.A.conferencethisquestionwasfaced. Thevariouskindsofeducation-technological, humanistic,social-werelinkedwithChristandHis Kingship.Thetechnologicalstudent,forexample, wasmadetorealiseboththeprofundityandthelimit ofhisvocation:thatthetaskofobservingthework ofGodisthesecondmostsublimevocationthereis. butthattechnologyshouldneverbeworshippedas ifitwereGod.Allstudentswereremindedoftheir dutytopenetratethesocial,economicandpolitical lifeofAustraliawithChristianprinciples.The reason?ItisthewillofGodthatChristtheKing shouldreigninallhumaninstitutions.

Ithasbecomerathertritetospeakoftheatmosphereofameeting.Yetifyouhadtheprivilege toattendthetalksatAquinasandjoinedthestudents indiscussingthem,youwouldhavebeenimpressed bytheatmosphereofearnestnessandevidentzeal withwhichtheysoughtaplantorestoreallthings inChrist.Theirdominantquestionwas:howcan Christbestreign-inmeandthroughmeinmyneighbour?Surelyitaugurswellforthefutureofthe layapostolatethatsomanyyoungintellectualsshould bewillingtoaskthisquestion?TheChurchlooksto themtobecome"theelite"whichourHolyFather considerssonecessaryfortoday'sapostolate.

BigInfluenceOnOfficialPolicy

Dr.UllathornetookchargeatSt.Mary's,celebrated thefirstMassintheunfinishedCathedral,andofficiatedatitsopeningattheendof1833.

Undoubtedlyhewasinfluentialincomposingan elementofdissensionthathadgrownupamonglocal Catholicsandopenedhalfadozennewschoolswithin afewyearsofhisarrival.

Heworkedlongandhardinhisearlyperiodhere, travelledwidelyinthecolony,visitedNorfolkIsland, v.herehewasimpressedbyitshorrors,andhadabig partinmovesthatledtotheappointmentofhisold teacher,Dr.JohnBedePolding,asfirstBishopof thenewdiocese.BishopPoldingwasappontedinMay, 1834,andarrivedinSydneynSeptember,1835.

From1836to1838Dr.UllathornewasinEuropeon behalfoftheChurchinN.S.W.Hepresentedalong reporttotheHolySeeontheAustralianmission, whichwaspublishedin1837underthetitle"The CatholicMissionInAustralia,"whichremainsan importantsourcebookonCatholicAustralianhistory ofthetime.

FromRome,Dr.UllathornewenttoEnglandand Ireland,wherehespokeinsermonsandlectureson behalfoftheChurchinN.S.W.

Itwasatthisstage,too,thatDr.Ullathornewas abletoexerciseabiginfluenceonofficialpolicyand publicopiniononthetransportationquestion.

HegaveevidencetoaCommitteeoftheHouseof Commons,whichwasexaminingthismatteratthe time,underSirWilliamMolesworth,andhealso publishedapamphletentitled"TheHorrorsofTransportation."

Hisstrongdenunciationoftransportationbrought himintodisfavourwithcolonists,whowereprofiting byit,butundoubtedlyhisviewswereextremelyinfluentialinassistingitsultimateabolition.

Heundertookamajorassignmentin1848whenhe wenttoRometocontributetotherestorationofthe hierarchyinEngland.whichwasdelayeduntil1850. HisexperiencesinAustraliahelpedhiminthis assignment.

AfterhisreturnfromRomehebeganhislongassociationwithCardinalNewmanandinSeptember, 1850,becahieBishopofBirmingham,occupyingthe Seeforalmost40years.

Atonestageitwaspossiblethathemighthave beenappointedArchbishopofWestminster,butthis positionfelltothelotoffutureCardinalManning. Hishealthfailedattheendofthe1870'sandhewas assistedbyanauxiliarybishop.

Themovewaslookedonhereastheopening strategyofananti-clericalcampaignaimedatinfluencingtheoutcomeofthenationalelectioninthe springof1958.

Twenty-threeCommunistdeputiessignedapetition askingParliamenttoinvestigatetheChurch'ssocalledinterferenceinpoliticalelections.

ThepetitionwasformallyintroducedinParliament anditslanguageviolentlyattackedHisHolinessPope PiusXll'srecentaddressesdealingwithspiritual andmoralproblemsfallingstrictlywithinthecompetenceoftheChurch.

"L'OsservatoreRomano,"aticanCitydaily,said itwouldrefrainfromcommentingonthealleged interferencebytheclergyinpoliticalactivitiesuntil thedebatehadbeenbroughttoaconclusioninParliament.However,thenewspaperprotested"against thedisrespectful"wayinwhichthePope"was draggedintothematter."

Isthereanychancethat Englandwillreturntothe Catholicfaithwithinareasonableperiodoftime?I maybetoooptimistic,butI thinkitwill.

Myopinionisbasedon thefactthattheCatholic Church,despitelongyears ofopenpersecution,has donewellinBritain.Today thereareapproximately 3,000,000CatholicsinEngland,771,340inScotland, and113,165inWales.

Ihavefoundinsome worksthatKingEdwardVI established 18grammar schoolsforthepoor.The historicfactisthatIfemerelytookoverformerCatholicschoolsthathadlong operatedandthathadbeen closedbytheReformers.

TheChurchofEngland wasfurtherProtestantised byQueenElizabeth'sGovernment.Shedidnothave herselfproclaimedheadof theChurchinEngland,but shedidtakethetitle"supnremegovernorof 'heChurch."

Oneofherworstproblemswasthegrowthofthe Puritans,whohatedthe ChurchofEnglandasferventlyastheyhatedthe CatholicChurch.Oneof theirleaders,Wentworth, wassenttotheTowerof Londontwiceanddied there.Hehadwanteddrasticpuritanisingofpublic worship.

BrandedCatholics

Despitehersupposed broadmindedness,Elizabeth wasresponsiblefortheAct ofSupremacybywhich Catholicscouldbeputto deathunderthebrandof traitors.Thiscondition lastedfortwocenturies.

ThestoryoftheEnglish Reformation,therefore,is notapleasantone.Yetit hassomeastonishingshafts oflightinit.HenryVIII's revoltwasnotmeanttolead toProtestantism,butwas againstthePapacybecause ofthePapacy'sprotectionof ChristianMatrimony.

Finallyasthecorroboree shriekedtoitsclimax,Goonurleanedexcitedlyforward,andBiagagrabbed thebagthatslidtothe groundand franticallystartedtwirling atthefirestick. Slowlyasmallsparksprang tolife.

Smokedriftedoverthe twirlingfiguresforthefirst time,andinthemidstof thecorroboreeanew elementcametothelives ofthetribesmen.

Afterhavingputupwith thesealmostintolerable hardshipsforsevenyears theWhitesdecidedtoshift furtherintocivilisationwhereawomanwouldcall atleastonceaweek.

Dublin,Dec:Aresolutionprotestingatthe"greatvolumeof evilliterature"whichisavailableinthiscapitalcitywasapproved bydelegatestotheDublinYouthLeaders'conference.

Thisresolutionwasjust oneofmanyprotestswhich havebeenregisteredrecentlywiththeMinisterfor JusticeOscarTraynor.A floodofwhathasbeen calledindecentandimmoral literaturefromtheUnited StatesandEnglandhas beenfillingupbookshelves andnews-standsinthecity.

LetterssignedbyFather M.C.Troy,chairmanof theCatholicYouthCouncil; G.McGuirk,secretaryof thecouncil,andD.O'Donohue,directorofthecouncil'ssoccerleague,asked Mr.Traynortotakeimmediateactiontogiveprotectiontothecity'syouthfrom thefloodofindecentliterature"pouringintothecity."

Inhisaddresstotheyouth .onference, Archbishop John0.McQuaidofDublin saidthatthereis"unquestionableevidence"thatobJectionableliteratureinthe formofcheappaperback booksfromAmericaand glossyperiodicalsfrom Englandarenowavailable inDublin.

Suchbooksandperiodicalsarebeingsoldopenly andnotasanunder-thecounterbusiness.TheIrish RetailNewsagents'Associationhasvoiceditsdisapprovalofanytrafficinsuch publications.

Causeoftheallegedsurge ofundesirableliteraturehas beenlaidontherecentineffectivenessofthenation's CensorshipBoard.InSep- temberofthisyear,J.J. Pigott,amemberofthe

boardsince1946andchairmansinceDecember.1956. resigned.

Recentlyherevealedhis reasonsforresigning.These includedthelimitations placedontheCensorship BoardbytheCensorship Act.Mr.Pigottsaidthat ifmorethanonemember ofthefive-manboardobjectedtoanorderprohibitingthesaleofapublica- tion,theiteminquestion couldnotbebanned.Two members,therefore,could defeattheotherthree.

Hesaidalsothattwo vacanciesontheboardin June,1956,werenotfilled untilDecemberofthatyear, whichmeantthattheboard couldnotmeetbecauseby lawfourpersonswerenecessaryforaquorum.

Theso-called"priestworker"movementbegan in1944whenagroupof youngParisianpriestsunderFatherHenriGodinfoundedtheMissionofPariswith thepermissionofCardinal Suhard.Concernedabout thelargenumbersofFrench workerswhohadbecome ignorantoftheteachingsof theChurchandhadgiven upthepracticeofChrisofCommunism,theprieststianityundertheinfluence ofthemovementworelay garb,tookjobsinfactories andlivedinhomesand apartmenthousesin workers'districts.

Someenteredthefactorieswiththepermission ofthemanagementtowork mongtheemployeesonthe job.Theirpurposewasto infiiltrateandformcellsof Christianityamongworkers andlabourers. Buttherewereprotests andcriticismsfromallsides. Somelaymenfeltthat

RadioPekinghasreportedthatCatholicsinSzechwanhavecloseda50-day meetingintheprovincial capitalofChengtu.The broadcastsaidthatthe meetingpassedresolutions condemningtheanti-communistviewsof"rightist" Catholics.
