FatherHowellsat noexpertliturgistwouldadvocatethattheentire shouldbeallowedinthe vernacular.Theprevailing opinionwasthatalltheunchangingpartsoftheMass, ofwhichthemeaningcould, belearned,shouldremain inLatin.ButcertainvariablepartsoftheMass,of whichthemeaningcould notbelearnedbythe people,couldneverproduce theirdueeffectuntiltheywereallowedinthevernacular.

Thesepartswerethe threepriestlyprayers,Collect,SecretandPostcommunion,andthetwoScripturereadings,Epistleand Gospel.

AndFatherHowellwas confidentthatthetime wouldcomewhenthese partsoftheMasswouldbe allowedinthevernacular. Thattimewouldbewhen publicopinionwasripefor thechange;andonlythe Pope,advisedbythe bishops,coulddecidewhen thattimehadarrived,and couldtakethenecessaryaction.

WhyHesitation?

ButhowisitthatCatholicsontheContinenthave beensoslowtorecognise therealcharacterofDr. Buchman'smovement,and thattheBishopstherehave beenhesitantforsolong incondemningit?

studentsatPrincetonUniversitycausedsomuch troublethathisactivities werebannedfromthatinstitution.

InSeptember,1926,there occurredat Massachusetts,Waterbury, "apentecost of thefrenziedconversions"by Buchmaniteswhich drewfromthe"New Yorker"thedescriptionof themovementas"aformof evangelismwhichcombines theadvantagesofmysticism,mesmerism,spiritualism,eroticism,psychoanalysis,andhigh-power salesmanship."

In1928helaunchedupon theContinentofEuropea newphaseofhismovement underthetitle,"MoralReArmament."

ThefirstphaseofBuchmanism.then,lastedfrom 1921to1928,andwasknown asthe"OxfordGroupMovement."Itclaimedtobea groupofpeoplewho"have surrenderedtheirlivesto Godandareendeavouring toleadaspiritualqualityof lifeundertheguidanceof theHolySpirit."

AsanentirelyProtestant association itnaturallyclaimedtheguidanceofthe Holy dentlySpiritquiteindepenofanyguidanceby theCatholicChurch.

Itsaimswereofficiallydescribedasbringinginto theworld"therealisation ofthepoweroftheHoly Spiritasaforceforspiritualandmaterialstabilityend bettermentoftheworld;to awakeninusasindividuals theknowledgethatweare dissipatingourspiritualinheritance,andthatsinisthe frustrationofGod'splan forusall."

ThattheCatholicChurch hadalreadybeenestablishedbyChristpreciselyfor thesepurpose;,withthe promiseoftheprotection andtheguidanceofthe HolySpiritalldayseven tilltheendoftheworld,no moreenteredtheheadof Fiain'cBuchman,theLutheranthanthatof'JohnWesleytheMethodistrevivalist.

Sotheultimateexternal testwasnottobetheinfalliblemagisteriumofthe CatholicChurch,butthe divinely-guidedverdictof theOxfordGroup;andit wasthroughtheOxford GroupthatGod'skingdomwouldcome.

Despiteallitsprofessions tothecontrary,therecan benoroomfordoubtthat theOxfordGroupmeantthe establishingofanewProtestantsect.Itexplicitly claimedtobearevivalof earlyChristianity.The namefirstproposedforit was"FirstCenturyChristianFellows'hip,"untilthe 'itleof Movement""TheOxfordGroup prevailed.

GermanLutheranism, EnglishEvangelismand Americanpragmatismhave eachstampeduponitits characteristicfeatures.The firststressedBiblicalliteralismandprivateinterpretation,totheneglectoftheologyandtheSacraments.

Bible-readingaccording totheProtestantprinciple ofprivateinterpretationretainsaprominentplace. Divine"guidance"istobe sought,withaQuaker-like relianceuponthe"Inner Light,"althoughsubjectto someextenttothehigher guidanJeofthe"God-controlled"Group.Publicconfessionor "Sharing"stillhasitsplace, togetherwithconversionor "life-changing,"according tothepatternprescribedby FrankBuchman.

Termsbelongingtothe Christiantraditionareused, butinanhereticalsense; anddoctrineincompatible withCatholicteachingsare proclaimedinthenameof M.R.A.

Therecanbenoroomfor doubtthattofosterandhelp theMoralRe-Armament Movementtogrowanddevelop,howevergoodits, aimsfromotherpointsof view,istohelpspreada reducedandhereticalform ofChristianity. Wecannotarguefromthe apparentbenefitsandfrom thevirtuesofindividuals tothesoundnessofsystems ofthought.Charitygives allcreditforgoodintentions,butmaynotcondone falsehood.

ItmaybebetterfornonCatholicstobeconverted fromirreligiontosomereligion;butCatholicscannot activelysupportamovementcontentwithconvertingpeopletohereticalreligions.

Afterall,JohnWesley,in the18thcenturydidmuch goodamongProtestants. Butthatcouldnotjustify Catholicapprovalofand supportforMethodism.

HisancestorsinIrelandstemmedfromaFlemish merchantfamilywhichmigratedtoEnglandinthe 15thcenturyandlatertoIreland,settlinginthe BaronyofArds,inCountyDown.

WhenPatrickJenningssettledinthedistrictinthe earlysixties,aRiverinaAssociationhadbeenfounded andwasactivelyadvocatingtheinterestsofthedistrict.SoonJenningswasanactivemember.

PetitionsweresenttotheBritishGovernmentand N.S.W.Legislatureandaneffort-unsuccessfulasit turnedout-wasmadeYOsendJenningstoEngland tofurthertheAssociation'sobjectives,whichwere beingactivelypublicisedandcanvassedatthetime.

Somereformswereachieved,especiallybywayof theextensionofrailwaysfacilitiestotheareaandthe foundationofCourts,andthenextstep,asaresultof representationstothePremierofthetime,James Martin,wasthatsomeRiverinaresidentswereoffered appointmenttotheLegislativeCouncil.

Asitturnedout,PatrickJenningswastheonly RiverinamantoentertheCouncil,whereheproceededtopubliciseandadvancetherequirementsof theRiverina,withsomehelpfrommembersofthe Assembly. HisworthasaParliamentarianwasquicklyrecognisedinotherways,too.Hewasabletosuggest helpfulamendmentstothe1867MunicipalitiesAct, andotherwiseestablishedaworthwhilepolitical reputation.

JenningsOpposedDivorceLegislation

In1869hetransferredtotheAssemblyasrepresentativeofMurrayfortwotermsuntil1872,whenhe resigned,remainingoutofpoliticsuntil1880.

Oneofhisachievementsatthisstage,forwhich Catholicswillbegratefultohim,wasthathefirmly opposedthefirstlegislationinfavourofdivorcein N.S.W.introducedbytheMinistryofSirJames Martin.

AmemorablespeechhemadetotheAssemblyon November22,1871,wasanexampleofhisopposition, andhewaswarmlycommendedatthetime.

Healsotookanactiveandvocalinterestinthe migrationquestionandemergedasastrongandinfluentialexponentofFree-Trade-alsoinopposition toJamesMartinandhiscolleagues.

PatrickJenningshadseveralopportunitiesof CabinetstatusinhisearlyperiodinParliament.In 1870hedeclinedaninvitationbyCharlesCowperto accepttheLandsportfolio,andWilliamForster,who wasofferedthePremiershipfollowingthedefeatof JamesMartininthesameyear,proposedtooffera portfoliotoJenningsbeforehiselectiontothePremiershipmisfired.

In1874Jenningsessayedinreturntopoliticallife whenhecontestedtheMudgeeconstituency,buthe wasdefeated.

Intheinterveningyears,untilhereturnedtopoliticsin1880,hisenergieswerelargelydevotedto InternationalExhibitions,aimedatpublicisingbefore theworldtheproductsandactivitiesoftheAustralian colonies.

Hisbiggestundertakinginthisregardwasthe organisationofthefirstGreatInternationalExhibitionofAustralia,whichwasheldinSydneyin1880. AgreatExhibitionBuildingwaserectedinthe Domainforthispurpose,butwaslaterdestroyedby fire.

InrecognitionofhisworkasExecutiveCommissionerofthisexhibitionhewasawardedtheK.C.M.G.

HewasalsoinEuropeduringthe70's,whenhe visitedRome,receivingtheawardofKnigh-Com- manderofPiusIX.inadditiontotheOrderof$t. GregorytheGreat,whichhadbeenawardedtohim in1874.

SirPatrickJenningsre-enteredNewSouthWales politicsin1880whenhewaselectedmemberfor Boganinageneralelection.HewasthusoutofParliamentwhenHenry'Parkes'EducationActof1880 wasbeforeParliament,buthewasnotinthepoliical groupopposedtoParkes,whohadbeenreturnedas Premier.

Incidentally,whenhewasPremieratalaterstage. hewasinvolvedinseveralincidentswithParkes. OnoneoccasionParkes,afteranall-nightsitting, wasthreatenedwithejectionfromtheHouseforcallingJenningsandhiscolleaguesa"brutalmajority." Parkeswithdrew.

Anotherincidentwasdescribedby"TheFreeman's Journal"intheseterms:"SirHenryParkes,while undertheinfluenceofdrink,reeleduptothetable oftheHouse,shookhisfistsavagelyatthePremier (Jennings)andcalledhim'a-Fenian'."

HespokeonnumerousmattersintheParliament, especiallyonJohnRobertson'sfamousLandBill,the rejectionotwhichwasfollowedbyanewelectionin whichJenningswasagainelectedfortheBoganconstituency.

ThenewPremierwasAlexanderStuart,andJennings,asVice-PresidentoftheExecutiveCouncilfrom JanuarytoJuly,1883,enjoyedCabinetstatus.He spokeonlandlegislation,themajorquestionofthe day,onover30occasions,andhisviewswereamong themostimportantcontributed.

Althoughawealthyland-ownerhimself,heupheld therightsandroleofthesmallfreeselector.

HewasastrongsupporteroftheSoudancontingent, organisedbyWilliamBedeDaileyin1885,inwhich thethirdmajorfigureconcerned,GeneralSirEdmund Strickland,wasalsoaCatholic.

Jenningswasdisgustedatthelowlevelofcurrent politics.HeresignedtorepresentN.S.W.atthe ColonialConferenceinLondon.Membersofhis MinistryhadincludedGeorgeDibbs,J.H.Wantand WilliamLyne.

WhleinEuropehevisitedRomeandwasawarded theGrandCrossofPiusIX.byPopeLeoXIII.,which conferredonhimtherankofMarquisinthePapal nobility.HewasalsoawardedanhonouraryDoctorateofLawsbyDublinUniversity.

Hewasagaininactivepoliticswhenheaccepted nominationtotheLegislativeCouncilin1890,and heatendedthehistoricFederaionConventoninSydneyinMarch,1891,asoneofthesevenN.S.W.delegates,whowereledbyHenryParkes.

ThereligiousimplicationoftheHungarianuprising wasevidentfromthebeginning.On'October23,late intheafternoon,ahugegatheringofBudapeststudentsandworkersconvergedonthemassiveStalin Square,wheretherehadbeenerectedagigantic monumenttoCommunism'slatehero,JosefStalin. ThecitizenryofthisbeautifulDanubecapitalwas intentupononephysicalact-thedestructionof thehatedreminderofSoviettyranny.Butthere wasmore,muchmorethatmotivatedthem,andit wentalmostunnoticedinthegeneralpressofthe West. A

Asthepatriotsmarchedonthesquaretheyraised theirvoicesinthetraditionalanthemofHungarylongsincebannedbyCommunistoverlords.Becoming increasinglyawareofwhathadtobedone,these averagepeoplebegantospeaktheirsouls."Giveus backourChurch!theyshouted,untilitreverberated throughoutthelengthandbreadthofthesquare,and withsuchfervourthatwithin24hourstheechoes hadreachedthroughoutallofHungaryandtoall cornersoftheworld,shatteringforevertheSoviet claimtopeacefulco-existence.

"GiveusbackourChurch!"continuedthedemand, andwithgrimdeterminationthestatuededicatedto theconceptoftheprimacyofmaterialismwasbrought toearthinironictestimonytothetemporalityofthe flesh.

MINDSZENTY

Thecrowdcontinuedtochantforthereturnofits Church,andwithstrikingironytheChristianworld recallsthatuponthesiteoftheStalinstatueonce stoodthemagnificentHungarianCathedraltothe BlessedMother(RegnumMarianum).Soitwas clearthattheChristiansofHungarydidnotforget, despiteCommunistattemptstoobliteratethememory thatthesacrilegeofdestroyingachurchofGodmust beatoned.Thecrycontinuedlongintothatfirstnight ofviolence:"GiveusbackourChurch."

Theundertoneofreligiousfeelingwhichtherevolutioncarriedwithitwasagainrepeatedintheearly andspontaneouslberationofHisEminenceJoszef CardinalMindszenty,PrimateofHungary.

OnOctober30adaringtasyforceofyoungHungariansoldiersandfreedomfighters,learningofthe secretpolice'sdeterminationtomurdertheCardinal inanattempttodiscredittheinsurgents,dashedto hisrescueinFelsopetenyandfreedhimfromthe captivityandtorturehehadenduredsince1948.

WhenwordoftheCardinal'sliberationreachedthe peopleofHungary,avisibleemotionalboostwasobservedeverywhereinrebel-heldterritorythroughout Hungary.

CardinalMindszenty'sfirstpublicactiongavethe lietothepreposterousanddesperateCommunist chargesthattheuprisingwasafascist,clericalattempt tocapturecontrolofapeace-lovingSocialistState. Inapleaforhelpaddressedtotheentireworld,the CardinalblessedtheyouthofHungaryforitsheroic defenceofitsmotherland.

WhenthefirstnewsoftheHungarianrevolution wasflashedtothefreeworld,Viennatookonthe

ThesermonatMidnightMasswasshort.It hadtobe.ThecelebrantwasdueattheAustroHungarianfrontierin60minutes,andsowashis congregation,whichhadcomefromalloverthe Christianworld.

ThiswasVienna,ChristmasEve,1956.Acity ontheperipheryofhell.Notmorethanastone's throwawaythebarbarichordesofSovietCommunismweredefilingthismostsacredofnights.

appearanceofawar-timecitydirectlybehindthe lines.Austriansrespondedtotheneedsoftheir neighbourswithanalmostincredibledisplayofChristianheroismandcharity.

Longlinesformedoutsideemergencycollection pointstogiveblood,food,oldclothingandmedical equipment.Onecouldseeendlessnumbersofyoung andoldAustrianscarryingwine-bottles,flasks,drums andpitchersfullofgasolinetothechurches,schools andtradeunionhalls,wherevergaswasbeingcollectedtosupplythevolunteerAustriancarsthat transportedtheneededitemsoflifetothefreedom fightersinHungary.

SomuchbloodwasgivenbytheAustriansinthe firstweekoftheuprisingthatthemedicalteams actuallyranoutofbottlestoholdthelife-giving plasma.

AlmostimmediatelythevastAustrianCaritas, Catholiccharityorganisation,mobiliseditsresources toaidinwhatobviouslyhadtobedone-helpthe peopleofHungaryintheirfightforliberty.Overnight CaritaswasjoinedbytheAustrianRedCrossandthe Socialist-controlledtradeunions.

SIRENSANDCARS

Viennabecameacityofsirens,RedCrossambulancesandprivatecarsflyingredcrossesandAustrian flags.Thecarsheadedinonlyonedirection-tothe East.Theborderhadbeenbreachedbyfreedom fighters,andafternearly10yearsoftheIronCurtain thespiritoftheWestwasmovingin.

Perhapsweirdestofallwastheincreasingsightof oddlittleHungariancarsspeedingalongtheroadto Vienna,proudlyflyingtheKossuthcolours,withthe hatedhammerandsickletornoutdramaticallyfrom theverymiddleofthebanner.Speedingforserum, drugs,medicaladviceandfood,sothatthesparkof freedomwouldnotdie.

Vienna.acitywhichoncestoppedtheTurksfrom overrunningEurope,wasnotfoundwanting.Nor wasAustria.Itisperhapsdifficultforoutsidersto realisethestakesinvolvedforthissmallcountryof sevenmillion.HerGovernmenthaddeclaredher perpetualmilitaryneutralityasahopethatRussia after10yearsofoccupationwouldleaveheralone. ShewassurroundedbyCommunistnationsonthree sides,andhernewarmyhadyettoconductitsfirst divisionstrengthmanoeuvres.

YettherewasnofearintheheartsoftheAustrians astheytravelledtoHegyshalom,theHungarianbordertown.ThebakersofViennasustainedwestern Hungaryfordays.Thetradeunionsprovidedfuel andvehicles.Privateenterpriseofferedmoney,personnelandtransport.Thereisanewtraditionin Viennathesedays,datingfromOctober25,whenthe largestbreweriesreleasedtheirbrewerytruckstothe morevitaltasksofshuttlingmedicalequipmentto theborder.

CRUSADERS

Thenastrangeandwonderfulthinghappenedon October25.TheChristiansofEuropestartedtoarrive inVienna.TheycamefromWestGermany,with theirpriests,singinghymnsasinthecrusades.They cameinlittleovercrowdedFiatsfromFlorenceand RomeandPalermo.Theycameinaspecialtrain fromLuxembourg;theyflewinfromCopenhagenon RedCrossflights.TheyarrivedinbusesfromLondonandParis.Theybeggedtheirwayacrosshalfof EuropefromSpain.Itwasanhonourrollofhistory.

Andthemostremarkablethingofallwasthe bannerunderwhichmanyofthemgathered.The whiteMalteseCrossonthefieldofred,thetraditional symboloftheKnightsofMaltaastheyenteredbattle againsttheinfidel.

Theheartofthestrugglelaybare.Ontheoneside thebloodredofCommunismoncemorestainingitself

withthebloodofmartyrs.Ontheothersidethe CrossofChristianityaroundwhichhadralliedthe defendersofthehelplessandthesuccourersofthe needy.

FEARLESSYOUTH

ThereisgreathopeforEurope.Toseetheseyoung idealisticandfearlessChristiansworkunderthe MalteseCrossistoseeChristdirectlyamongus.Most ofthemwenttotheborder.Manyofthemarestill there.Thesestudentsoperatedingroupsoffrom fourtoeight,ranginginagefrom18to28,andcomprisingbothboysandgirls.

TheycarryChristintonoman'slandandupon occasionintoHungary.Theycanbeseenatnight- allnight-inthesnow,inthecoldandrain,inthe moonlight.Theystandasbeaconsoffreedom,for theyaidinthewonderfulworkofsavingmenfrom deathandslavery.Itisupontheshouldersofsuch youngstersandtheircountlessAustriancolleagues that2percent.ofthepopulationofHungaryhas reachedhavenalongthatgrim,wind-sweptmarshlandandplainthatmarkstheborderbetweenWest andEast,freedomandtyranny.

GINO'SHUNCH

Gotwiththemonenightontheirpatrolwithdeath. PerhapsyoumightbewithGino,thelaughingItalian studentofphilosophyfromMilan,whoalonesaved scoresofHungarianlivesonenightinNovemberby, trickingtheMongolguardsontheHungariansideof theborder.Hisgrouplearnedtotheirdismaythat theRussianshadbeguntomemoriseshortphrases inGermaninordertocauseescapingHungariansto exposethemselveswithinahundredyardsorlessof safety.

Armedwithaflashlightandanamazinginsight intothemindsofrefugees,thislittlegrinningItalian boyof19wentgailyoffintoHungarysome100yards orsoandbegantoshoutloudlyinItalian,"Hereis Austriaandfreedom,myfriends;followmyvoice andyouaresafe."

Backhecamebellowingoneofhisfavouritearias, andwithinseconds,asifoutofnowhere,emerged some35frost-coveredHungarians,includingfive nearlyfrozenbabiesinarms.Gino'shunchhad worked.ThesoundofavoiceneitherRussiannor Germanhadwontheconfidenceoftheterror-stricken andlostHungarians.

LEGENDARYMISSLEE

And,ofcourse,thereisthealmost Englishlady,MissLee,whoarrivedattheborderto announce:"Thisrevolutionwasstartedbystudents, andwestudentsofEnglandmustnotfailthem."

Sincethen,forverynearly22hoursaday,her specialchargehasbeenthechildrenofHungary,and especiallythebabieswhostumbleacrosslowerBurgenlandmarshes,somewithoutparentsandunderstandingandlove.Shehasrequisitioned,commandeeredandbegged,andher"children"haveallfound shelterandfood.

Thestoriesofinspirationandselflessgivingare legion.ThereweretheHungarian-speakingpriests whorodetheambulancesandRedCrosstrucksto bravetheRedsandbringpeaceandcomforttothe woundedanddying.Therewerethetrulycourageous Austriangendarmes,who,twoorthreetoaborder post,alonestoodbetween20Sovietkillerdivisions andVienna.

GLORIOUSCHRISTMASEVE

Itwasthesemen,armedwith1917rifles,whoindicatedthewaytofreedombyplantingtheflagsof Austriaevery100yardsalongtheentirestretchof Hungarianfrontier.Andtotheirheavenlycredit,it wasthisbandofunsungStatepolicewhoonChristmas EvelitupthewholeborderwithChristmastreesand crossestoshowthewaytothe794overjoyedescapees whowerewelcomedtosafetyandnewlivesthat nightbythetraditionalandpowerfulstrainsof Austria'slovelycarol,"SilentNight."Itrsngoutfor alltohearacrossthesnow-coveredHungarianplain.

ItwasChristmasEveontheborderthatbrought oneclosetotheInfantofBethlehem.Forhereone sharedHisjoyandHissorrow,HiscoldandHis warmth.OntheAustriansideallwaswarmth;on theHungariansideallwashate.Andyetloveshone through.

EveryoneknewChristwasnear.Andwhenthe voicesofmanytonguesjoinedasonechorustosing anAlleluiaortoringoutinSwedish,German,French, ItalianandSpanishasahuntedandhoundedHungariancrossedover,oneknewChristwasthere.
