Dr.Haidpointedoutthatproblemsariseinsuch asituationwithregardtothewishesofthepatient's family,andwithregardtotheadministrationof ExtremeUnction.

1.Doesonehavetherightorevenadutytouse artificialrespirationinallcases,eveninthosecases which,inthedoctor'sjudgment.areconsideredcompletelyhopeless?
2.Mayonelegitimatelyremoveartificialrespirationapparatus,withcertaindeathfollowing,when afterseveraldaysthestateofdeepunconsciousness doesnotimprove?Whatmustbedoneinthiscase ifthepatienthasalreadyreceivedthelastsacraments andhisfamilyurgesthedoctortodiscontinueartificialrespiration?IsExtremeUnctionstillvalidat thistime?

Replyingtothesecondquestion,concerningthe removalofartificialrespirationapparatusbeforecirculationhascometoastopwhenthepatienthas alreadyreceivedthelastsacraments,andthevalidity ofExtremeUnctionwhichisadministeredatthe momentcirculationceasesorafterwards,thePope said:

Theupbringingofherchildren,forone.Thenervousinstabilityandlackofrestraintofmanymodern childrenhasbeenaggravatedbythecultofthe "rights"ofchildren,sorecklesslypropagatedinclassroom,printandbroadcastwithoutanybalancing teachingoftheirduties.This,withthepublicteachingofsexknowledgeinorder,onealmostfeels,that youthmayfullyappreciatethehoneyedlicenceof ourbooks,periodicalsandfilmsandtheattitudethat counts"self-expression"holierthanself-control,have allhelpedtocreateamoredifficultyouth
TheChristianmotherhastodealwiththisproblem inordertomaintainherchildrenasgoodCatholicsin aworldwheremostoftheirplaymatesarepagans.One couldgoonindefinitelytoshowhowmodernprogress, inspiteofallitsboonsandhelps,hasactuallyimposedgreaterstrainsandburdensonthemodern Catholicmother.Hergrandmotherhadtrials,indeed, buttheywereeasiertosurmount.
Shewasshutofffromthelifeabouther,shecould concentrateonherFaithandherfamilybecauseof hersegregation.Butthemodernwifeisverymuch inandoftheworld;itsmaterialismisadailychallenge,itsveryintimaciesaconstantattack.Always itisatworktosapherFaith,towearawayherfortitudewiththeexampleofthoseabouther.tocrumble awayherprinciplesbyamoreworldly,morescientific,amoresociallyacceptableoutlookoflife.These thingsassailherdirectly,enteringtheinnersanctuary ofthehomethroughtheradio,thePress,through conversationshehaswithanon-Christianfriend.
Alwaysthereisthispressureoftheeasy,lesstiresomewayexerteduponher,andalwaysthereisthe physicalpressureofherhardwayasaCatholicwife andmother.Thereis,intruth,littlerelief,little relaxationforherifshepersistsinmaintainingher patientandgallantdevotiontoherdutyandherFaith. And,because,indeed,therearetodaythousandsof suchwives,mothers,quietly,undemonstrativelyand selflesslyexertingthisbraveandlovelydevotion,we shouldnotgrudgethemthehomageofsomepraise,a littlerecognitionandsomegratitude.Togivedue honourtotheunsungbutsaintlymothersofourday isexceedinglyworthwhile.

Butthereislittleenoughopportunitytolayout floweringshrubsandsmoothgreenlawnsinthe PapuanMission.Thelaymenhavecometotakeup tougherassignments.TheyhavepromisedtoperformanytaskthattheBishoporhisdeputymayask ofthem.AndtheBishopasksthemtotakeoverthe temporalworkoftheMission;toactasengineers, carpenters,electricians,mechanics,boat-builders, farmers,stockmenandgeneralhandymen;totakethe burdenofbuildingandmaintenance,ofploughing andplanting,fromtheshouldersofthehard-pressed Fatherswhobegformoretimetoattendtothespiritualneedsoftheirpeople.TheMissionhasneverhad enoughmen.Itisthisconstant,pressing,inescapable factthathasledtothefoundingoftheMissionary 4 Laymen'sMovement.
In1946,HisLordshipBishopSorin,M.S.C.,went toFrancesoonafterhisconsecration.Hewasfaced withmanyproblemsforthebelovedMission.Lack offinance,thenever-endingdifficultiescfcarrying suppliesovertreacherousmountainroadsbetween remoteMissionStations;thenecessityofdeveloping theMission'sagriculturalresourcestomeettherising costofliving;thespiritualcareof20,000Catholcs, manyofthemonlyjustemergingfromunbelievably primitiveconditions.Allthese,andyetperhapsthe mostpressingproblemofallwasthelackofpersonnel.
ThewarhadprecludedtheMissionfromreceiving anyreplacements.Ithadinterruptedthetraining ofBrothers.Intwelveyears,onlyonehadbeensent outfromFrance.Thosewhoremainedhadalready beeninPapuafortwentyorthirtyyears.Inthe normalcourseofevents,youngermenshouldhave beencomingouttoreplacethem.Itwaswhilehe wasinFrancethattheBishopdecidedtoaskfor layvolunteers.In1947.hewenttoRomeandduring aprivateaudiencewiththePopeheexplainedthe projectthathehadinmind.TheHolyFatherthought foramomentandthensaid,"Yes,thisisasplendid

Aboutthesametime,thelargestoftheMission vesselswaslostatsea.Withthehelpoffriendsin Australia,anewboat,the"St.Francis"wasbought. AcrewwasneededtobringthenewboatfromSydney toPortMoresby.FatherAndreDupeyrat,M.S.C., thedistinguishedauthorof"Mitsinary,"launcheda newspaperappealaskingforvolunteerstomanthe St.Francis-volunteerswhowouldbepreparedto stayonafterwardsfortwoyearsaslaymenmissionaries.Fiveoftheapplicantswereselectedand whiletheytrainedfornavigation.FatherDupeyrat preparedthemfortheirnewlife.
WiththearrivaloftheAustralianvolunteers,the Bishopdecidedthatsomeformoforganisationwas required.SowasborntheMissionaryLaymen's Movement.APresidentwaselectedandafewsimple rulesadopted.Thelinkwhichjoinedthemembers totheMissionwasapromiseofobediencetothe Bishoporhisrepresentative.Theagreementsigned bythemenlaiddownquiteclearlywhatwasexpected ofthem.Theywouldnotbeentitledtoanypayment forworkdoneintheMission.Theymustbeprepared toshareinanyhardshipinherenttomissionlife. TheymustbereadytoliveafullCatholiclifeandbe anexampletothenativepeopleinthepracticeof theirFaith.

Twenty-fiveyearsago, Beauraingwasanunimportantsmalltownabout fivemilesfromtheFrench border.Atonetimethe peoplehadbeenfervent Catholicsbutfromwars anddepressionstheyhad turnedawayfromreligion andbecomeindifferent.The politicalspiritofthetown was,forthemostpart, Socialist.
OneeveninginNovember,1932,fourschoolchildren,FernandeandAlberte VoisinandAndreeandGilberteDegeimbre,wentto meetGilberteVoisin,sister ofFernandoandAlbert,at theconventschoolsheattended.

AllCatholicshavethat. Childrengoontolearnthe moreimportantelementsof theirreligionwhentheylearnthecatechism.
Asadults,theycango muchmoredeeplyinto things,discoveringthat theirreligionisatonce simpleandprofound,intelligibletochildren,yet providing inexhaustible treasuresforthewisestof philosophersandhistorians; and,spiritually,fortheloftiestofmysticsandthe greatestofsaints.
