Lastyearanewfeaturepletedintimeforthecomwastheuseofintroductoryingedition,butitisexnotestoitsmainsectionsinpectedthatthe1959edition sixlanguages:Italian, French,Spanish,German, English,Portuguese.These introductionsformerlyappearedinItalianonly.

TheChristianmotherhastodealwiththisproblem inordertomaintainherchildrenasgoodCatholicsin aworldwheremostoftheirplaymatesarepagans.One couldgoonindefinitelytoshowhowmodernprogress, inspiteofallitsboonsandhelps,hasactuallyimposedgreaterstrainsandburdensonthemodern Catholicmother.Hergrandmotherhadtrials,indeed, buttheywereeasiertosurmount.

Shewasshutofffromthelifeabouther,shecould concentrateonherFaithandherfamilybecauseof hersegregation.Butthemodernwifeisverymuch inandoftheworld;itsmaterialismisadailychallenge,itsveryintimaciesaconstantattack.Always itisatworktosapherFaith,towearawayherfortitudewiththeexampleofthoseabouther.tocrumble awayherprinciplesbyamoreworldly,morescientific,amoresociallyacceptableoutlookoflife.These thingsassailherdirectly,enteringtheinnersanctuary ofthehomethroughtheradio,thePress,through conversationshehaswithanon-Christianfriend.

Alwaysthereisthispressureoftheeasy,lesstiresomewayexerteduponher,andalwaysthereisthe physicalpressureofherhardwayasaCatholicwife andmother.Thereis,intruth,littlerelief,little relaxationforherifshepersistsinmaintainingher patientandgallantdevotiontoherdutyandherFaith. And,because,indeed,therearetodaythousandsof suchwives,mothers,quietly,undemonstrativelyand selflesslyexertingthisbraveandlovelydevotion,we shouldnotgrudgethemthehomageofsomepraise,a littlerecognitionandsomegratitude.Togivedue honourtotheunsungbutsaintlymothersofourday isexceedinglyworthwhile.

Inthefrontbenchwherethereisonlyroomforthreetokneelsidebyside,ateacherrubs shoulderswithamechanicononeside,withalandscapegardenerontheother. formofCatholicAction.Youmay,ofcourse,expect somedifficulties.Butgoahead,Iblessyourscheme." Anappealforvolunteerswaspublishedinthe FrenchAnnalsofOurLadyoftheSacredHeart.As aresult,fifty-fiveapplicationswerereceived.The conditionsforthevolunteerswerehard.Tenyears ofserviceinPapuainwhatevertasktheBishopmight assigntothem.Nopayforthisservice,eitherduring theirstayintheMissionorattheendoftheirterm; theMissionwouldsimplysupportthemandpay travellingexpensesbothways.

Butthereislittleenoughopportunitytolayout floweringshrubsandsmoothgreenlawnsinthe PapuanMission.Thelaymenhavecometotakeup tougherassignments.TheyhavepromisedtoperformanytaskthattheBishoporhisdeputymayask ofthem.AndtheBishopasksthemtotakeoverthe temporalworkoftheMission;toactasengineers, carpenters,electricians,mechanics,boat-builders, farmers,stockmenandgeneralhandymen;totakethe burdenofbuildingandmaintenance,ofploughing andplanting,fromtheshouldersofthehard-pressed Fatherswhobegformoretimetoattendtothespiritualneedsoftheirpeople.TheMissionhasneverhad enoughmen.Itisthisconstant,pressing,inescapable factthathasledtothefoundingoftheMissionary 4 Laymen'sMovement.

In1946,HisLordshipBishopSorin,M.S.C.,went toFrancesoonafterhisconsecration.Hewasfaced withmanyproblemsforthebelovedMission.Lack offinance,thenever-endingdifficultiescfcarrying suppliesovertreacherousmountainroadsbetween remoteMissionStations;thenecessityofdeveloping theMission'sagriculturalresourcestomeettherising costofliving;thespiritualcareof20,000Catholcs, manyofthemonlyjustemergingfromunbelievably primitiveconditions.Allthese,andyetperhapsthe mostpressingproblemofallwasthelackofpersonnel.

ThewarhadprecludedtheMissionfromreceiving anyreplacements.Ithadinterruptedthetraining ofBrothers.Intwelveyears,onlyonehadbeensent outfromFrance.Thosewhoremainedhadalready beeninPapuafortwentyorthirtyyears.Inthe normalcourseofevents,youngermenshouldhave beencomingouttoreplacethem.Itwaswhilehe wasinFrancethattheBishopdecidedtoaskfor layvolunteers.In1947.hewenttoRomeandduring aprivateaudiencewiththePopeheexplainedthe projectthathehadinmind.TheHolyFatherthought foramomentandthensaid,"Yes,thisisasplendid

Finally,thechoicewasnarrowedtofive.These youngmenweresenttothenovitiateoftheHoly GhostFathersinParisforfourmonths'training. TheyarrivedinPapuaattheendof1947.Soon afterwards,oneoftheirnumber,HenriDescombes, wasdrownedinthesuddenfloodingofamountain streamwhileonhiswaytotakeuphisnewduties.

Aboutthesametime,thelargestoftheMission vesselswaslostatsea.Withthehelpoffriendsin Australia,anewboat,the"St.Francis"wasbought. AcrewwasneededtobringthenewboatfromSydney toPortMoresby.FatherAndreDupeyrat,M.S.C., thedistinguishedauthorof"Mitsinary,"launcheda newspaperappealaskingforvolunteerstomanthe St.Francis-volunteerswhowouldbepreparedto stayonafterwardsfortwoyearsaslaymenmissionaries.Fiveoftheapplicantswereselectedand whiletheytrainedfornavigation.FatherDupeyrat preparedthemfortheirnewlife.

WiththearrivaloftheAustralianvolunteers,the Bishopdecidedthatsomeformoforganisationwas required.SowasborntheMissionaryLaymen's Movement.APresidentwaselectedandafewsimple rulesadopted.Thelinkwhichjoinedthemembers totheMissionwasapromiseofobediencetothe Bishoporhisrepresentative.Theagreementsigned bythemenlaiddownquiteclearlywhatwasexpected ofthem.Theywouldnotbeentitledtoanypayment forworkdoneintheMission.Theymustbeprepared toshareinanyhardshipinherenttomissionlife. TheymustbereadytoliveafullCatholiclifeandbe anexampletothenativepeopleinthepracticeof theirFaith.

Twenty-OneAustraliansEnlist

Inthetenyearsofitsexistence,theMissionary Laymen'sMovementhashad42members,18from FranceandSwitzerland,onefromCzechoslovakia,one fromMaltaandonefromHolland,21fromAustralia. TheAustralianswereoriginallyaskedfortwoyears' service.Amongthefirsttohavecompletedtheir termare:

Atthepresenttime,thereare20LaymenMissionaries.ThirteenofthemareAustralian.But,asin 1947,whentheMovementwasfirststarted,theMissionisagainindesperateneedofmorevolunteers. ThreeoftheFrenchlaymen,whohavecompletedten yearsofinvaluableservicehaverecentlyreturnedto Europe.Tomakemattersmoredifficultstill,no fewerthaneightoftheFathersintheMissionare duetogohometoEuropeforayear'sholidayafter tenormoreyearsofcontinuousserviceinPapua. Thelabourersareindeedfew.

YoungAustraliansareurgentlyinvitedtojointhe MissionaryLaymen'sMovement.Thepresenttime ofserviceaskedisthreeyears.Duringthistime, volunteerswillbeentirelysupportedbytheMission, whichwillalsopaytravellingexpensesbandfrom Papua.Thereislittletoworryaboutonhealth groundsasmoderndrugsandthegreatlyimprove medicalservicesoftheTerritoryhavegreatlyminimisedthedangersoftropicaldiseases.Evenmalaria ceasestobeamenacewhenproperprecautionsare taken.

Planshavebeencompletedforthe25th anniversarycelebrationsoftheapparitions ofOurLadytofiveschoolchildren,inBeauraing,Belgium,betweenNovember29, 1932,andJanuary3,1933.

Twenty-fiveyearsago, Beauraingwasanunimportantsmalltownabout fivemilesfromtheFrench border.Atonetimethe peoplehadbeenfervent Catholicsbutfromwars anddepressionstheyhad turnedawayfromreligion andbecomeindifferent.The politicalspiritofthetown was,forthemostpart, Socialist.

OneeveninginNovember,1932,fourschoolchildren,FernandeandAlberte VoisinandAndreeandGilberteDegeimbre,wentto meetGilberteVoisin,sister ofFernandoandAlbert,at theconventschoolsheattended.

Theyhadamusedthemselvesduringtheirwalkby ',layingoneoftheirfavourite games-ringingthedoorbellsofhousestheypassed andthenrunningaway.

Whiletheywerestanding outsidetheschool,allfive ofthemsaw"thefigureof alady,dressedinpure white"walkingalonga railroadbridgenearby.

Fromthattimeon,the childrensawthevisionalmosteverynight.

Eventually,greatcrowds ofpeople,manyofwhom hadatfirstbeenincredu-

lous,cameeveryeveningto theconventgardentopray. Thechildrentookturns leadingtheRosaryevery night,andduringthattime theyallsawtheLady.

WhenAlbertaskedthe LadyifsheweretheBlessed Virgin,she"smiledand noddedherhead."Heaskedherwhyshehadcome, andshereplied."Alwaysbe good."

Religiousandcivilauthoritiesdidalltheycouldto testthechildren,tobesure theywerenotuptomischief orthepreyofillusionor deception.Atonetime,a' groupofdoctorscameto theeveningmeetingstoobservethechildren.

When,duringoneevening Rosaryitbecameobvious fromtheirbehaviourthat theywereseeingtheBlessed Virgin,oneofthedoctors approachedGilberteVoison. Shewasclearlynotaware hewasstandingnexttoher.

Thedoctorpinched, slappedandshoutedather, butallwithnoresponse. Heheldalightedmatch beneathoneofherhands. Notonlydidshenotflinch, buttheskindidnoteven scorch.

Anyviolationoftheseor ofmanyotherclausescarriedthepenaltyofexcommunicationoftheguilty Catholic.In1198Innocent III,becamePope.Sixyears later,in1204,theJewsappealedtohimagainstilltreatmentatthehandsof soldiersreturningfromthe 4thcrusadetothe.Holy Land.

R.:Thefirstthoughtto whichsuchaconsideration givesriseisthattheirinabilitytoaccepttheCatholicFaithcannotbedueto theirbeingwell-rehd,becauseequallywell-read peopledoacceptit.

But,secondly,wemust rememberthatfaithisa supernaturalgift,amatter ofgrace,notdependent uponintellectualattainments.

Mereclevernessanda highereducationgenerally cannotbesteppingstonesto areligionofwhichChrist said:"IgiveTheethanks, Father,becauseThouhast hiddenthesethingsfrom thewiseandprudent,and hastrevealedthemtolittle ones."(Matt.11:25).

AllCatholicshavethat. Childrengoontolearnthe moreimportantelementsof theirreligionwhentheylearnthecatechism.

Asadults,theycango muchmoredeeplyinto things,discoveringthat theirreligionisatonce simpleandprofound,intelligibletochildren,yet providing inexhaustible treasuresforthewisestof philosophersandhistorians; and,spiritually,fortheloftiestofmysticsandthe greatestofsaints.

Q.:Thepositionofthemere non-Catholiclayman,therefore,looksanything butbright.

R.:Thatwouldbesoif geniusandscholarships gavepeopleanadvantage overpeopleofordinaryin- telligenceasregardsattainingtofaithinthe Catholicreligion.
