Thepresentbuildingwas inbrick,withsolidstone foundations,whichindicated4hefaithandhopeof thefuture.

Fr.Maslovarthankedthe CockburnRoadBoardfor thegoodworktheyhad doneinlevellingthe groundsandfortheassistancehehadreceivedfrom theparishioners.

HisLordshippointedout thattheCatholiccommunity nowhadeveryopportunity forcarryingouttheir duties.

Thebuildingwouldalso. beusedasarecreational centreandpossiblyinthe futureasaschool.

HisLordshipspokeof thehardlabourcarriedout byFr.Maslovarduringthe constructionofthebuilding andhopedthepeoplewould continuetogivetheirsupport.

TheHon.F.Lavery, M.L.C.endorsedtheremarksofHisLordshipand Mr.Cooper,chairmanof theRoadBoard,saidthat theRoadBoardwasonly toohappytogiveassistance toaprojectsuchasthis.

Itwouldbeofbenefitto thewholecommunity,particularlytheyoungerpeople.

In1914,animpressive ceremonywaswitnessedin St.Mary'sCathedral,when ArchbishopClune(R.I.P.) receivedherandseven otheryoungladiesasSisters ofMercy.

Thefruitfullifeofan activeapostolateandefficientserviceinthecauseof Catholiceducationwhich seemedsonearonthat occasionwasdestinedby DivineProvidencenotto eventuate.Earlyinher novitiateSisterwasstricken downbyanillnessfrom whichsheneverreallyrecovered.

However,duringshort periodsoftemporaryrelief, sherenderedmuchvaluable service,chieflyasacorntopauseawhileand Six

considerthefuture; tothinkwhatlife means-toyou-as aCatholic; toprayforguidance thatyournextstep maybetherightone; toreflect:Perhapsthe Master is saying, "Come,FollowMe."

Withtheirhomebrightlypainted,the weatheridealforNovemberandtheirgardenarealpicture,nowonderErnieandMrs. Carpenewereproudpeopleastheyjoined inthewelcomeFatherKearnanandhis parishionersgavethe600peopleforthe annualfete.

Oncethepeoplestarted toarriveitmadeacolourfulandlivelyscene.Equally busysellingalovelyarray offancygoods,pictures, jams,vegetables,fruitand cooldrinksweretheladies inchargeofthevarious stalls,andifanyonehadany doubtsastotheabilityof the1957ladiestoholdtheir ownatcookingwiththeir mothers,onelookatthe cakestallwouldhaveput thesedoubtsaside. Nowonderthecakessold asquicklyastheywere handedin,andfor1/6one gotalovelyafternoontea ofsandwichesandcakesor sconeswithacomfortable placetorelaxandenjoy themandyetbeinthefun.

ThehappybanterofJack Scheurerwasmissedthis yearforhewasawayin thecountryonholidays,but amanhesenttotakehis

BlueArmyPlans Organisation

thoughtheBlueArmywas aworld-wideCrusadenumberingover16millions,it waspracticallyunknownin Australia.

AtMaylandsparishhallonSundaylast, theRev.JohnLynch,P.P.,Maylands,addressedameetingrepresentativeofanumberofparishesinthemetropolitanarearegardingtheBlueArmy. Hepointedoutthatal-to-datebyoneanxiousfor thespreadoftheCrusade. Filmswouldbeavailable soon,thecostofwhich £100),itwashoped,would bemetbyvoluntarysubscriptions.

Onlyrecently,anational headquartershadbeenset upinBrisbane.Itwas thereforeadifficultworkto educatetheCatholicpeople intoarealisationofthe realandurgentnecessityof carryingouttheFatima message,whichwasthepurposeofOurLady'sArmy.

Itcannotbetoomuch emphasisedthatthisisnot anewdevotion,saidFr. Lynch,orthatitentailsany morethaneveryCatholic, whohastheinterestofhis Faithandhiscountryat heartshouldbedoingtoday viz.,dailyRosayandwearingofBrownScapularor Medal.

OnAugust20,1946, somecattlewaggonsshunted outofastationnearKatowice,Poland.Itwasan ordinarytrain-likeany othertraininaSoviet satelliteState.Yetitwas thebeginningofawonderfulstory.Thestoryofhow aPolishfamilywasdivided byCommunismandreunitedbytheintercession oftheMotherofGod.

Inthetrainweretwo Catholicyouths,Stanislaus andJohnKupietz.They werebothexcitedandsad. Excitedbecausetheywere secretlyfleeingfromsome fanaticCommunistsintothe Westwheretherewouldbe freedom,justiceandthe fulfilmentoftheirambitions.

Theywouldthushavea dancetopractisetheirreligion.Ofcourse,theycould dothat,tosomeextent, undertheCommunistsfor thechurcheswereofficially open.

Butthepriestsandnuns wereimprisoned.Besides, church-goerswerenotcon-

sideredthemostpatriotic citizens.

Theirheartswerealso sad.Fortheywerenotonly leavingbehindtheirfatherland,butalsotheirfather andmotherandfive-yearoldsister.Howwouldthese continuetofareunderCommunism?

Theirfatherownedhis owndelicatessenbusiness, butforhowlong?More important,when(ifever) wouldthePolishGovernmentlettheirfamilyreunite?

Thislastquestionthe Kupietzbrothersresolved toansweroncetheyreachedtheiradoptedcountry. Thiscountryturnedoutto beAustralia.

ArrivinginWesternAustralia,Stanislauskeptup afortnightlyairmailcorrespondencewithhisparents. Ofcourseitwascomparativelyeasyforhim.

Withhisfolksbackhome inPolanditwasdifferent. Theywerelookedonas traitorsforwritingtoa capitalisticcountrylike Australia!Andwithoneof theirsonsbeingsounpatrioticastobeginhis studiesforthepopish priesthood! WhenMrs.Kupietz broughtherletterstothe localpost-officeshehadto queueupataspecialwindow,handherlettersopen totheclerkwhocensored themostentatiously,making surenovaluableswereenclosed.

WhenStanislausentered St.Charles'Seminaryat Guildford,hewasintroducedtotheMiraculous Medalnovena.Thisdevotion,whichwasrevealedto St.CatherineLabourein 1830byOurLady,hadcome toGuildfordwiththeVincentianFatherstwoyears before.

Fromthereitspreadto St.Mary'sCathedral,where theNovenaisconducted everyWednesday,andto someparishes.

Stanislauswastaughtto go,childliketoOurLadyin allhisdifficulties.Needless tosayhisfirstthoughtwas forhisparentsandlittle sisterstillbehindtheIron Curtain.

Novenaafternovenahe petitionedMarytoreunite hisfamily.Theyearswent by,butstilltheprayers keptonwithdoggedhope.

Twoapplicationsforvisas throughofficialchannelsvia CanberrareceivedaRussianised"No!"TheBritish ConsulatWarsawcoulddo nothing.Australianpermits forentrywerehadatleast twice.

InPolandmattersbecame worse.TheStatetookover Mr.Kupietz'sdelicatessen businessandmadehim managerofaState-owned co-operative.

Thenafteryearsofconfidentprayerananswerarrived.Ithadastrange coming.

InternationalFactors

The20thSovietParty Congressin1956,Kruschev'sattackonStalinism, thenationalistrevoltsin PolandandHungary-theseinternationalfactorswere thebeginningsofthe answer.ThenaftertheaccessionofPremierGomulka inPolandtheGovernment showedamoreenlightened policy.

In thistraditionallyCatholiccountry(only5.2 percent.ofthepopulation wereCommunistsin1955), therewastobemorereligiousfreedom.Gomulka's eagernesstomakegood beforetheWesternPowers ledhimtorelaxtheemigrationlaws.

InthiswaythePolish visasfortheKupietzfamily weregiveninMay,1957.

Theyhadprayedforthis momentfortwelvelong years.Nowatlasttheir familywastobereunited, thankstoOurLadyofthe MiraculousMedal. Worldlingsmightbeinclinedtocallthisstoryall amatterofluck.Prayersto aLady,thenthesmashing oftheStalinidol,Gomulka's accessionandthe quentopeningtothe Westernworld-allpure coincidence.

TheCatholic,believing inProvidenceandthe powerofprayer,knows differently.God'sgrace, flowingthroughMary,uses ordinarymeans-ifone cancallKruschevanda SovietPartyCongressordinary.

HeknowsOurLady's poweratthethroneofGod cananddoeshelpallwho callonher.FortheMother ofGodpromisesgreat favours,asshetoldSt. CatherineLaboure,toall thosewhoconfidentlywear herMedalaroundtheir necks.

Inthiscasesuchafavour wasgrantedafteryearsof unrelentingprayers.Or,as Stanislausputitina thanksgivinglettertoOur Lady:"ourfrequentprayers toyouunderthatlovely title,OurLadyofthe MiraculousMedal,wereat lastunexpectedlyanswered

Inanordinationceremonysoontotakeplacethe youngpriestswillbeasked toofferupaMasstoOur Lady.Iknowoneofthem whowillgladlydoso,rememberingthestation nearKatowice,thecattlewaggons,onAugust20, 1946,andthecoldJune morningatMascotAerodrome.

OnSunday,theclosing dayofthemission,13little childrenmadetheirfirst HolyCommunion.Resplendentlycladintheirfirst HolyCommunionclothes, thehappylittleboysand girlsenteredthechurchin procession.

Theparishpriestthenreceivedtherenewaloftheir Baptismalvows,inwhich theywerejoinedbythe wholecongregation.

ThenFr.O'Reganspoke tothechildrenonHoly Communion,andmadea stirringpleatotheir parentstogivetheirinnocentlittleonesnothingbut theverybestofgood example.

Massfollowed,during whicharecordnumberreceivedHolyCommunion. ThemissionendedsolemnlyonSundaynightwitha torchlightprocession,ledby thefirstHolyCommunicants,totheshrineofOur LadyofSchoenstattinthe conventgrounds.

Here,eightnationalities, inanAustralianbushsetting,spoketheircommon loveoftheircommon Motherandheardhowlove forhersimplymeantdoing justwhatwasrecommendedtothemduringthemission.

Ontheotherhand,theywoulddowelltorememberwhattheCommunistshavefoundoutina wideandfearsomeexperienceofpersecution.Itis fataltomakemartyrs,forintheparadoxofhuman affairsitistheacceptanceofdeaththatgiveslife. FromthemomentIpassedthroughthemaingates bearinganinscription"St. Vincent'sFoundlingHome," anduntil5.15p.m.,Ihad livedinanatmosphereof peace,love,innocence, tranquillityandbeauty.

Sometimesthewordorphanagecanconveyanimpressionofreferringto somesombreinstitution whereanumberofunfortunatechildrenaregathered togetherforobviousreasons;atSt.Joseph'sthere appearstobeonlyonereasonandthatis"Love."

Beingofanagewhenone canbecomealittlecynical ofsuchinstitutions,Iset outtoseeeverythingthat wasopenforinspectionbut thefurtherIwentthegreaterwasmyfeelingof

amazementandadmiration forthemagnificentartistry andexecutionoffaithand devotionthatconstitutesSt. Joseph's.

Somewherebackinancienthistorythereisasayingthat"Theverystones ofRomehaveears."The magnificentSistersatSt. Joseph'shaveevensurpassedthat,aseverystone orbricksurroundingthe manyminiaturegardens areofadifferentcolour anddesign.

Unfortunatelyspaceand abilitydonotpermitmeto conveytoourmanyCatholic friends(whohavenothad theopportunityorperhaps inclinationtovisitSt. Joseph's)inrespecttothe manyandvarieditemsof interestandbeautythat existsinthisgloriousand peacefulinstitution.

Inconclusion,Iwould liketoreiterate,thatifwe weretoseeksomehavenof retreatwhereonemightresideinanatmosphereof peaceandbeautyforat leastafewhours,thenI coulddonomorethanrecommendavisittoSt. Joseph's,ifandwhenthe opportunitypresentsitself.
