WHYPERSECUTION?

ThosewhothinkthatCommunismisonlyapolitical orsocialmovementcannotunderstandthispersecution.WhyshouldCommunists,whentheyaresecurely inpower,trytoexterminatetheChurch?Unfortunately,Communismisnotjustapoliticalorsocial movement;itisalsoananti-religiousdoctrine.Lenin, architectoftheRussianrevolution,andarecognised authorityonthemeaningofCommunism,statedthis bluntlyagainandagain.Hesaid,forinstance"ThephilosophicalbasisofMarxismisdialectical materialismMaterialismthatisabsolutelyatheistic andresolutelyopposedtoallreligion."Tosuppose thereforethattherecanbepeacefulco-existence betweenCommunismandreligionissheerwishful thinking.Whentheytrytodestroyreligion,Communistsareonlyactinginaccordancewith*their beliefs.Sincetheyregardanythingthatpromotes Communismasmoral,theyhavenoqualmsabout eventhemostbrutalpersecution.Theonlyproblem foithemis:what,inthecircumstances,isthebest meansofeliminatingreligioninacountry?

VARIETYINTACTICS

Ascountriesandcircumstancesvary,themeans judgedbestwillalsovary.Murderandimprison- ment,thetraditionalformsofpersecution,havebeen usedinallcountriestakenoverbytheCommunists, andarestillbeingused.Thousandsoftheclergy andlaityhavesufferedinthisway.Theestimated figureforeachcountryisgivenbyMr.Gaiter.Some ofthemoreflagrantexampleswillbealreadyfamiliar toreadersoftheCatholicpress.Lesswellknownis thestoryofAlbania,wherethemajorityoftheclergy hasbeenkilledorimprisoned,andthatofCzechoslovakiawherein1950-1,twothousandmembersof religiousordersofmenwereinternedandmostnuns wereexpelledfromtheirconvents.Ineverycountry, too,churcheshavebeencloseddownandreligious worshiprestricted.

Suchbrutalmethods,however,havetheirdisadvantages.ItisnoteasyforCommuniststoconvince

religiouspersecution.Also,whereCatholicpopulationsarelarge,itisimpossibletokillorimprison everybody.Again,whatremainsoftheChurchis drivenundergroundandoutofCommunistcontrol. Fromtheirfortyyearsofexperience,Communists hoverealisedthattheirmethodsmustbemorecunning,moreflexible,thatthedestructionofreligion willtakealongertimethananticipated.Attimes, even,theymustbepreparedtomakeconcessions,to relaxthepressure.Afinetimeforsuchagestureis whenadelegationisvisitingthecountrysothatthe delegationcanreportonitsreturnthattheRedshave seentheerroroftheirwaysandareabandoningthe persecutionofreligion.

Itwouldappearthatthesatelliteisnottheonly "achievement"ofSovietScience.AccordingtoMr. Gaiter,"underlyingthediversityoftacticsthereis alwaysdiscernibleaconstantpatternofpersecution, akindofover-allplanning,withbutdifferenceof degreeinitspracticalapplication.Thereisreason tobelievethattheCommunistGovernmentshaveat theirdisposalaresearchorganisationandpsychologicallaboratoriestoaidthemintheiranti-religiousor ratheranti-Catholicstrategy."

Ofcourse,notallthe clergywereenthusiastic aboutthereforms.Onone occasion,whenvisitingthe churches(whichhedidwith amazingregularity)hewas barredbyarmedmen,gates wereslammedinhisface andshotsfired.Heescaped withoutinjury-thistime.

Inanotherattackhewas notsofortunate.OneafternoonVesperswerebeing sungintheArchbishop's palace.Surroundedbythe priestsofhishousehold,he waskneelinginfrontofthe altarwhensuddenlythere wasadeafeningreport.The Archbishopreeled.Smoke andgunpowderfilledthe air.Therewasamoment ofterrorbeforetheArchbishop,uprightonhisknees, oncemorestilledtheconfusion,andVesperswere resumed.Thewould-beassassinhadpenetratedthe Cardinal'sskinwithoneof thebullets,andsomadea bruisewhichBorromeobore fortherestofhislife.
