Butitiscommonknowledgethattelevision-and withgreaterreason-needsthebenefitsandsafeguardsofalertvigilance.
Itispraiseworthythat,insomecountries,items forbiddentotheyoungareexcludedfromthetelevisionprogrammes;butifithappensthatcertainplaces admitsuch,then,atleast,definiteprecautionsare absolutelyessential.
Itisuselessforanyonetosupposethatexcellent principlesandanuprightconscience,onthepartof thoseengagedinthesearts,aresufficienteitherto ensurethatnothingbutgoodflowsfromthesmall whitescreen,ortoremoveallthatisevil.
Inthismatter,then,prudenceandwatchfulcare areespeciallydemandedofthosewhomakeuseof television.

Wecannotconcludethisletter,VenerableBrethren, withoutrecallingtoyourmindtheimportanceofthe functioncommittedtothepriestforencouraging andmasteringtheinventionswhichaffectcommunication,notOnlyinotherspheresoftheapostolate,but especiallyinthisessentialworkoftheChurch.

AsWesaidinadiscoursetothosetakingpartina studyweekforthebringingup-to-dateofpastoral practiceinItalyatthepresenttime-"Thepriestwith 'thecareofsouls'canandmustknowwhatmodern science,artandtechniqueassertwhenevertheytouch ontheendofmanandhismoralandreligiouslife."
Lethimlearntousetheseaidscorrectlyasoften as,intheprudentjudgmentofecclesiasticalauthority, thenatureoftheministryentrustedtohimandthe needofassistinganincreasingnumberofsouls, demandit.
Finally,iftheseartsareemployedbythepriestto advantage,hisprudence,self-controlandsenseof responsibilitywillshineoutasanexampletoall Christians.
Wedecidedtolaybeforeyou,VenerableBrethren, Ourthoughtsandanxieties,whichyou,ofcourse,also share,concerningthegravedangerswhichcanbeset Christianfaithandmoralsifthepowerfulinvention ofmotionpictures,radioandtelevisionareperverted bymentoeviluses.
Wehavenot,however,passedoverthebenefitsand advantageswhcihthesemoderninstrumentscan bring.
Tothisend,withthepreceptsoftheChristianfaith andnaturallawtoenlightenUs,wehaveexplained theprincipleswhichmustguideandregulateboth theactionofthedirectorsofthemeansofpublicity, andtheconscienceofthosewhousethem.
Andforthesamereason,namely,thatthegiftsof DivineProvidencemaysecurethegoodofsouls,We havepaternallyexhortedyounotonlytoexercise awatchfulcarebutalsotousepositiveactionand authority.

Hereisabriefaccountofitshistory:
Inthelate1920'sBro.Keaney,stationedatClontarfBoys'Town,became concernedoverthedrifttothecityof"oldboys"initiallysenttothecountry.
Hefeltthatthesolutionwouldbeafarmschool,wellremovedfromthe city'senvirons.
In1927,withtheapprovalofthethenArchbishopofPerth,theMostRev. Dr.P.J.Clune,agroupofCatholiclaymensecuredland,unclearedpractically unfencedandwithoutapermanentwatersupply,atTardun,307milesfrom Perth.
Theinspirationhadbecomeareality,butasternreality.Difficultieswere almostinsurmountable.
OnSeptember19,1928,thefirstbrothers,Bros.P.KeaneyandE.Mulquinney,arrivedinTarduntopreparethewayforthefirstgroupofeightboys who,withBro.J.O'Farrell,dulyreachedtheirnewhomein1929.Butthe "home"wasseverelyplainandrough,poorwheatprices,insufficientfoodmade heroicpioneersoftheentiregroup.
Asuccessionofbadseasons,destructionofthehomesteadbyfire,andthe highcostofequipmentandtransportwouldhavebroughttheventureto failurehaditnotbeenforthecourageofthesebrothersandboys.
BrotherLouisConlon,stilllabouringnowfortheboysinBindoon,secured forTardunonelastreprieve,anddespitefurtherdroughts,thepositionbegan aslowbutsteadyimprovement.Newshedswereerected,windmillssetup,sheep andcattlenumbersincreased,agreateracreageofwheatsown,andtocrownall, onOctober13,1935,aremarkablecoincidence,thehomeforthefirstfarm traineetograduatewasblessedbytheBishopofGeraldton,theMostRev.Dr. O'Collins,towhomTardunowesaspecialdebtofgratitude,forhiskindly assistanceandabidinginterest.
LOTTERIESCOMMISSIONBACKSPROJECT
In1936thefirstwingofthemainbuildingwaserected;1938sawthe inceptionoftheCatholicMigrationSchemesponsoredbytheArchbishopof Perth,theMostRev.Dr.Prendiville.
AfterseeminglyendlessnegotiationsbytheArchbishop's"ambassador," Bro.Conlon,thefirstgroupof32boysandthreeNazarethSisterstookup residenceinTardun.
By1940,abeautifulconvent,anewbakery,technicalroomandshearing shedhadbeenaddedtothebuildingsandadditionallandhadbeenacquired.
Therewerefurtherextensionstothemainbuildingin1942,whenBrother PaulKeaneybroughthisteamofyoungbuildersfromBindoon,relievingthe pressureonaccommodationcausedbytheevacuationstoTardunbyClontarf Boys'TownandC.B.C.Geraldton.
Whilethe.earlyBrothersandboysbravelyfacedandovercamethe difficultiesofpioneerwork,theirprayersforassistancehadnomoretangible resultthanthemagnificenthelpgiventhembytheStateLotteriesCommission.
Itwasthefaithofthisgenerousbodyinthefuturesuccessofthescheme ThatgaveBro.Conlonthecouragetoundertaketheerectionofthefirstperma- nentbuildinginTardun.
Duringthepasttenyearstherehasbeenconstantprogress.
MAJORITYOFLADSSTAYONTHELAND
Furtherlandhasbeenacquired,andthe"dream"oflandsettlementhas materialised.About260boyshavepassedthroughSt.Mary'sandofthese eighthavebeensettledonfarmsoftheir.owninthedistrict,aboutsixothers navepurchasedfarmsfurtherafield,and90percent.are_workingontheland asshareholdersorfarmhands.
Theschoolitselfdependsonthestandardofthemigrantsonarrival,but theaimistoenableeveryboytoreachthehigheststandardsheiscapableof, withprimeattentiontohisreligiousformation.
Onleavingschool,hebecomesafarmtrainee,butstudiesinallsubjects, togetherwithspecialcoursesinmachinerymaintenance,woolclassing,metal andwoodworkcontinueatnight.

HappymanatthesolemnblessingofSt.Mary'sAgriculturalSchool, Tardun,extensionsonSunday,wasBrotherLouisConlon,oftheChristian Brothers.
BrotherConlonwashappybecauseattheageof82hehadtravelledup fromBindoontoseetheculminationofadream-theopeningofanewwing andhostelcosting£70,000.
BrotherConlon,aformerprincipal,tookovertheschoolwhenithada debtof£30,000,whichsumattoday'svalue,accordingtotheBrotherProvincial,approximates£100,000.
PrescriptionfordebtclearancewasgivenbyBrotherProvincialinaquip. Oneofthebrothersoftheearlydayswasaskedbytheheadquartersofthe OrderinSydneywhatTardunwaslike.
"Sorry,Ihaven'tseenityet.Westartworkbeforedaylightanddonot finishuntilitisdark.Ihaven'tseenTardunindaylight,"thebrotheranswered.
BrotherSullivansaidthattheschoolpropertyextendsover60,000acres. Thisyear5,000acresaredowntocrop.Sheepflockswhichin1945numbered 2,000todaytotal5,000.
