Gentlemen'sAgreementOn ChurchAndM.R.A.IsAtEnd
(ByFatherPlacidJordari,O.S.B.)
Fribourg,Switzerland.-A"gentlemen's agreement"reachedabouttwoyearsagobetweenagroupofCatholictheologiansrepresentingaSwissBishopandtheMoralRearmamentAssemblyhasbeenrepudiatedby theMR.A.
Theagreementwasreachedin1955betweentheologiansrepresentingBishop FrancoisCharriereofLausanne,GenevaandFribourgandM.R.A.members, andappliedtotheBishop's diocese.
TheMoralRearmament movement,alsoknownas theOxfordGroupmovementandasBuchmanism, wasfoundedatOxford, England,byPennsylvaniabornDr.FrankBuchmanin 1921.
Itprofessesnottobea newreligion,butrathera "Christianrevolution,"cooperatingwiththeestablishedChristianfaiths. Itsaim,accordingtoits founder,is"anewsocial orderunderthedictatorship oftheSpiritofGod,and whichissuesinapersonal social,racial,nationaland supernaturalrenaissance."
Themovementhasbeen criticisedbyCatholic bishopsthroughoutthe worldasbeingtingedwith indifferentism.
In1951.theSacredCongregationoftheHolyOffice, theVaticfnbodycharged with andsafeguardingthefaith moralsofCatholics, issuedadocumentmakingit clearthatpriestsandReligiousareforbiddentopar- ticipateinMoralRearmamentmeetingswithoutthe specialpermissionofthe HolySee.
PointsOfAccord
Itfurtherstipulatedthat laymenarediscouraged fromaccepting"postsofresponsibility"withinthe movement.
AccordingtotheagreementwithBishopCharriere, M.R.A.committeditselfnot toinfringeonthemission oftheChurchandconsentedtoaseriesoflimitations onCatholicco-operation withthemovementinthe Dioceseof .nne,GenevaandFrilnurg.
Amongthepointsagreed onatthattimewere:
1.MoralRearmamentwii, refrainfromusingChristian terms,suchas:Church,HolySpiritandCrossofChrist, initsofficialvocabulary.
2.Sinceitconsidersitself a"gatewaytotheChurch" merely,itwillnotconveytheimpressionthatitisa solidunit,self-sufficientin i'sstructure.Itwillnot ,attempttotaketheplaceof
theChurchingivingreligiousinstruction.
3.TheChurchdoesnot wishCatholicssubordinated tonon-Catholicsinspiritual matters.TheCatholic"permanentmembers"ofM.R.A., therefore,shouldnotbe separatedfromoneanother butjoinedingroupsinorder tofacilitatetheinstruction andtrainingbyapriestresponsbletotheBishopof Fribourg.M.R.A.willencouragesuchinstructionand training.
Thesepointsalongwith theothersagreedtoin1955 amountedtoacommitment onthepartofM.R.A.notto infringeonthemissionof theChurchwithinBishop Charriere'sjurisdiction.
Aftertheagreementbecamegenerallyknownin theUnitedStates,American Protestantsvoicedcriticism ofM.R.A.leadersforhavingsignedthedocument.

"Letitbeclearlystated,"hecontinued,"that Christ'sChurchhasnointentionofcedinggroundto itsdeclaredenemy,atheisticCommunism,without puttingupafight.Thisbattlewillbefoughttothe bitterendwiththeweaponsofChrist."
Tothosewhowillacceptthecalltobattle,thePope recommendedtheprotectionof"theQueenof Heaven,whohasgiventangibleandprodigiousassistanceinrecentyearsandinmanypartsofthe earth."
"Ifthereisapowerintheworldcapableofoverthrowingthepettybarriersofprejudiceandpartisan spirit,andtodisposesoulsforafrankreconciliation andfraternalunionamongpeople,"thePontiffcontinued,"itisindeedtheCatholicChurch.You(the laity)canrejoiceinitwithpride.Itisforyouto ccntributetoitwithallyourstrength."
Indefiningthelayapostolate,thePopestatedat thebeginningthatthoselaymenorwomenwhoare engagedexclusivelyintheteachingofreligionwith explicitepiscopalmandatedonot,forthatreason, passfromthelayapostolatetoahierarchialapostolate.
Healsoclarifiedanotherpoint,whichhasbeen raisedrecently,bydeclaringthatthetimeisnotyet ripeforthere-introductionoftherankofdeacon conceivedasanecclesiasticalfunctionindependent ofthepriesthood.
Itwascleartohislistenersthathedidnotclose thedoortosuchapossibility.Infact,hewentonto saythatifsuchadiaconateshouldonedaybeintroduced,itwouldnotbepartofthelayapostolatebut wouldhavetobeconsideredaspartofthepriesthood.
Indefiningtheroleofthelayman,thePopesaid thatthefirstthingwhichmustberememberedisthat Christgaveatwo-foldpowertoHisApostles:the sacerdotalpowerofconsecratingandthepowerof teaching.
