Rather,itoughttoleadtopointingoutandchoosing thoseonlywhichareinaccordwiththeChurch's commandmentsonthegroundsofreligionandofthe morallaw,andwhichfollowtheinstructionsissued bytheecclesiasticalofficesinthismatter.
Providedtheseplans,inaccordancewithOurhopes, correspondtopedagogicalprinciplesandrightrules ofmentaldevelopmentWenotonlygivethemOur approval,butalsoheartilycommendthem;andthus Wedesirethemtobpintroducedintoeverytypeof school,CatholicActiongroups,andparishsocieties.
Righttrainingandeducationofthespectatorsin thisfashionwillensure,ontheonehand,alessening ofthedangerswhichcanthreatenharmtomorals: and,ontheotherhand,permitChristians.through thenewknowledgetheyacquire,toraisetheirminds toacontemplationofheavenlytruths.
ProtectingTheYoungInTheHome
Whilespeakingonthispoint,Wedesiretopraise inaparticularmannerthosepreachersofthedivine wordwhomakerightusealsoofthemeansprovided bymotionpictures,radioandtelevisiontothisend.
Theyareawarethattheyareindutyboundto preservetheintegrityofmoralsofthosepeopleto whomtheyministerandleadtowardsthepathof truth.Andthustheysharewiththemthegenuinely salutarybenefitsandinventionswhichourtimeshave introduced.
Wethereforedesirethatthosewhowieldauthority. eitherinChurchofState,shouldinaspecialwaysupporttheactivityandenterpriseofthesepreachers.
Yetitmustbenoticedthat,inexercisingcontrolin thismatter,therighttrainingandeducationofthe spectators,ofwhichWehavespoken,isnotinitself sufficient.
Eachoftheshowsmustbesuitedandadaptedto thedegreeofintelligenceofeachage,thestrengthof theiremotionalandimaginativeresponse,andthe conditionoftheirmorals.
This,indeed,assumesaverygreatimportance becausesoundradioandtelevisionslows,sincethey easilypenetraterightintothedomesticcircletthreaten tounderminetheprotectivebarriersbywhichthe educationoftheyoungmustbekeptsafeandsound untilsuchtimeasadvancingagegivesthenecessary strengthtoenablethemtoovercomethebuffetings oftheworld.
Forthisreason,threeyearsagoWewrotethusto theBishopsofItaly:"Shouldwenotshudderifwe reflectattentivelythatbymeansoftelevisionshows, evenwithinhomesurroundingsallcaninhalethat poisonedairof'materialistic'doctrineswhichdiffuse notionsofemptypleasuresanddesiresofallkinds,

Weareawareoftheinitiativeswhichhavebeen encouragednotonlybypublicauthoritiesbutalso byprivategroupswhoareengagedintheeducation ofyouth.Wemeanthoseundertakingsandplansby whichtheymakeeverypossibleefforttowithdraw youngpeoplefromtheseshowswhichareunsuited totheirage,thoughtheyaretoooftenbeingattended, withresultingseriousharm.
Whateverisbeingdoneinthispraiseworthycause, Weheartilyapprove.Yetitmustbenoticedthat, evenmorethanthephysiologicalandpsychological disturbanceswhichcanarisetherefrom,thosedangers mustbeguardedagainstwhichaffectthemoralsof youth,andwhich,unlessturnedasideandforbidden indueseason,cangreatlycontributetothedamage andoverthrowofhumansocietyitself.
ConcerningthismatterWemakeafather'sappeal totheyoungsodeartoUs,trustingthat--sinceitis aquestionofentertainmentinwhichtheirinnocence canbeexposedtodanger-theywillbeoutstanding fortheirChristianrestraintandprudence.

Wemostearnestlyexhortthemembersofthis committeetodevote,inasuitablemannertothese topics,deepandprolongedstudyanddevoutprayer. Fortheyhavetodealwithamostimportantmatter whichiscloselyboundupwiththeChristianconcept oflife.andconsequentlytheymusthaveasound knowledgeofthatpowerwhichisexertedbythe cinemaandwhichvariesaccordingtothedifferent circumstancesofthespectators.
Asoftenastheyhavetojudgethemoralaspectof acinemaprogramme,theyshouldattentivelyrevive withinthemselvesthosedirectivesalreadymany timesgivenbyUs,asoccasionoffered,andparticu- larlywhenWespokeofthe"idealfilm,"ofthqpoints whichconcernreligionandatthesametimeofrepre- sentationofevildeeds.Itshouldneverignoreorbe opposedtohumandignity,tothemodestyofthe homesurroundings,toholinessoflife,totheChurch ofJesusChrist,tohumanandciviltypesofassociation.
Moreover,letthemrememberthatthetaskallotted tothemofclassifyingandpassingjudgmentoneach filmprogrammeaimsespeciallyatgivingclearand appropriateguidancetopublicopinionwiththeintentionofleadingalltovaluehighlytherulesandprin- ciplesofmoralitywithoutwhichtherightdevelop- mentofmindsandtruecivilisationbecomemeaning- lessterms.
CriticsMustGuardMoralityOfFilms
Unquestionably,therefore,onemustrepudiatethe mannerofactingofthosewhofromexcessiveindulgenceadmitfilmswhich,foralltheirtechnicalbrilliance,neverthelessoffendrightmorals;or,though theyappearonthesurfacetoconformtothemoral laws,yetcontainsomethingwhichiscontrarytothe Catholicfaith.
Butif whichtheyhaveclearlyandpubliclyindicated filmscanbeseenbyall,bytheyoung,by adults,andthose,ontheotherhand,whicharea moraldangertothespectators,andfinally,those whichareentirelybadandharmful,theneachwill beabletoattendthosefilmsonly,fromwhich"they willcomeoutwithmindshappier.freerandbetter.
Andtheywillbeabletoavoidthosewhichcanbe harmfultothem,anddoublyso,ofcourse,whenthey willhavebeenameansofgainfortraffickersinevil things,andgivenbadexampletoothers.
RepeatingthetimelyinstructionswhichOurpre- decessorofhappymemory,PiusXI,publishedinhis encyclicalletter,entitled"VigilantiCura,"We earnestlydesirethatChristiansbenotonlywarned withcareasfrequentlyaspossibleonthistopic,but thattheyfulfilledthegraveobligationsofacquainting themselveswiththedecisions-issuedbyecclesiastical authorityonmattersconnectedwithmotionpictures, andoffaithfullyobeyingthem.
Thebishops,iftheydeemitappropriate,willbe abletosetasideaspecialdayeachyeardevotedto thismatter,onwhichthefaithfulwillbecarefully instructedconcerningtheirduty,particularlywith regardtofilmshows,andurgedtoofferearnest prayerstoGodaboutthem.
Tomakeiteasyforalltobefamiliarwiththese decisionsandtoobeythem,thesedirectives,together Withashortcommentaryonthem,mustbepublished atsomesuitabletime,anddistributedaswidelyas possible.
Tothisend,Catholicfilmcriticscanhavemuch influence.Theyoughttosetthemoralissueofthe plotsinitsproperlight,defendingthosejudgments whichwillactasasafeguardagainstfallingintosocalled"relativemorality,"ortheoverthrowofthat rightorderinwhichthelesserissuesyieldplaceto themoreimportant.
Quitewrong,therefore,istheactionofwritersin dailypapersandinreviews,claimingtobeCatholic, ifwhendealingwithshowsofthiskind,theydonot instructtheirreadersconcerningthemoralposition tobeadopted.
Thereisadutyofconsciencebindingthespecta-
torswho,eachtimetheybuyaticketofadmissionasitwerecastingavote-makechoiceofgoodorbad motionpictures;asimilarduty,andevenmoreso, bindsthosewhomanagemovietheatresordistribute thefilms.
Wearewellawareofthemagnitudeofthe'difficultieswhichtodayconfrontthoseengagedinthe motionpicturesindustrybecauseof-inadditionto otherconsiderations-thegreatincreaseintheuse oftelevision.
Yet,evenwhenconfrontedbythesedifficultcircumstances,theymustrememberthattheyareforbiddeninconsciencetopresentfilmprogrammes whicharecontrarytotheFaithandsoundmorals,or toenterintocontractsbywhichtheyareforcedto presentshowsofthiskind.
Butsinceinmanycountriesmenengagedinthisindustryhaveboundthemselvesnottoexhibit,for anyconsideration,filmprogrammeswhichmightbe harmfulorevil,Wetrustthattheexcellentinitiative willspreadtoallpartsoftheworldandthatno Catholicincinemamanagementwillhesitateto followsuchsaneandsalutaryproposals.

Notonlyisthemindincapableofdiscoveringthese truths,butevenwhenthey aremadeknowntousby Godthehumanmindcannotfullyunderstandthem. ThetruththatOurLord was,atoneandthesame time,Godandmanis,for example,amysterywecannotunderstand.Hereinlies theproblemofthereligious painter.

Descriptionsarekeptto aminimum;nothingabouttheappearancesofOur LordorHisMother,their clothes,theirhouseofgar- den.Thereisnothing"realistic"aboutthem;distractinghumandetailsareomitted.Wearegivenplainhistoricaleventsandtheir underlyingdoctrineand spiritualsignificance.And yet,inspiteofthepoverty ofhumandetailtheGospels arepoetry;theyenlighten ourmindandenkindlelove inourhearts.
