OnSept.18,atSt. Subiaco,therepassed MotherM.Benedictin age.

MotherBenedictwasborn atCuddagh,Mountrath, Leix,andlaterenteredthe SistersofMercyatDerry, Ireland.Shemadeherpro- fessionin1894andatthe timeofherdeathhadbeen aprofessedreligiousfor64 years.

WhileinIrelandin1898, thelateBishopGibneyap- pealedtotheDerrycommunityformissionarySistersforhisdiocese.Hetold themtheywouldliveina tentandtherewouldbe manynativesabout.

FromamongmanyvolunteerssixSisterswere chosenforthenewfoundation,namely,MotherM. Clare(Superior),Mother M.Veronica,SistersM. Mercy,Agnes,Benedictand Benignus.

TheSistersleftDerryon thefeastofOurLadyof Mercy,1898,sailingfrom atFremantleontheeveof thefeastofAllSaintsthey weretakentoSt.Brigid's convent,WestPerth,where theyremainedforthree months.

InJanuary,1899,thenew churchatVictoriaPark wascompleted.ItwasblessedbyDr.Gibneyonthe feastofSt.FrancisdeSales. ThesixSisterswerepresent attheMassandafterwards tookupresidenceatVictoriaParkinthefourroomedweatherboardcottagelenttothembyMr. Claffey.

4- MonsignorBourkebad askedMr.Claffeytolend thehousefortwelve months.Hereadilyagreed todosoandtheSisters madeittheirhomeuntil theirsinglestoreybrick conventwasready.

Thisbuildingwasmade possiblebythegenerousaid oftheQuinlanandO'Connorfamiliesandthedonationsofmanyfriends.

Inthosepioneeringdays thenewcommunityextendedtheirlaboursto Armadale,Cannington,GosnellsandSouthPerth. MotherBenedictdrovea buggytoSouthPerthto teachschoolformanyyears priortothearrivalofthe SistersofSt.Joseph.Then Belmontschoolwasopenedin1915.

In1928,onthefeastof OurLadyofMercy,the foundationstoneofSt. Joachim'sconventwaslaid. Memorableamongstthe manydonorswhoassioed inthisworkaretheMcArdleandRussellfamilies.

TheSistersremainedat VictoriaParkuntilFebruary,1934,whentheybecameamalgamatedwiththe Victoria-squarecommunity. SoonafterwardsMotherM. BenedictwenttoliveatSt. o. Joseph'sorphanage, Subiaco,wheresheremainedforalmostaquarterof acentury.

MotherBenedicthada greatdevotiontotheHoly SacrificeoftheMass.Inall herreligiouslifeitwasan

tohereternalreward the87thyearofher almostunheardofthingfor hertobeabsentfromdaily Mass.

Sisterswhowereinthe habitofarrivingearlyin thechapelwerealmostcertainonanymorningtofind MotherBenedicttherebeforethem.

Duringthelastmonthsof herlifewhenillnessand infirmityweighedheavily uponhershewasoften takenintoMassandspent

partofherdayinthe chapel.

Theonlysurvivingmemberofthelittlecommunity wholeftDerrysomany yearsagotospreadthe Faithinthisnewlandis MotherM.Beriignus,who haslivedatSt.Joseph's orphanagesince1934.

ThememoryofthesedevotedandzealousSisters willbelongreveredby theirloyalfriendsand gratefulpupils,whilstthe conventandchapelatVictoriaParkwillbealastingmemorialtotheir generousworkforsouls.

TheDramaFestivalentriesforThursday,September26includedaMummer'sPlayandtwoMumboJumboplays.Oneplayincludedachessgame,and another'stitlewasachess term.

Theseseemingsimilaritiesnotwithstanding,the qualityoftheproductions wasveryuneven.

The"PaceEggPlay" presentedbySt.Patrick's DramaSocietywasaninconsequentialfancydress danceofmedievalvillage greenvintage,complete withajester.Theplayhad rhyme,butpoordiction preventedourgatheringits reason.

TheMyolaDramaGroup pleasedwith"ThePhanTheactingthroughoutwastornShip,"butover-loud fairlygood,andproductionintroductorymusicwasannoying.FaithVinnicombe, asthewidow-mother,spoke herlineswellenough,but herarmswerecarriedunnaturally.Thedaughterwas reasonablyportrayedby Dora-MayUpson,andthe spinsterbyDorisGroom. DorothyBarbertookthe partofthetourist,butdid notquitegetthenoteof sincerityintoherwork.

PatchTheatremadean excellentchoiceforSaturday,September28th'sround intheDramaFestival

"TheGiocondaSmile," fromAldousHuxleyisa murderthriller,withjealouslyandphilosophising blendednicelytomakethe playverysatisfying. Thebigfaultwiththe productionwastheunnaturalspeedwithwhichcues weretakenup.Thetrunk telephonecallsbeingconnectedwithnodelay.

Doris'takingofthetablet overdosewithhardlya second's warder'sthought,andthe failuretogo throughthemotionsofunlockingthecelldoorin Scene2,ActIJI,wereall errorswhichlittleextra carewouldhaveavoided.

Thelightingeffectswere generallybad,exceptin SceneI,ActII.Butinother sceneswesawthephysician readingabookinadarkenedcorner,andScene4 ofActIIIwasasemi-silhouetteeffort.Footlights seemedtobeabsentfor mostoftheplay.

Inspiteofthesehandicaps,theactorssucceeded inputtingoverthemain themeoftheplay.John Gillgaveagoodpresentationoftherichplayboy,unfaithfultohissickwife, whowoundupinacondemnedcell.
