InrecentyearsHolyMass wa7celebratedeachSunday intheStateSchool.The numberwhoattendedwarrantedtheconstructionofa smallchurchinthedistrict.

Thedifficultyofacquiring asitehadbeenovercome satisfactorilyeventhoughit

wasnecessarytodemolish anoldhouseonthesite.

Itwasideallysituated, andhewasconfidentthat thepeoplewouldshowtheir appreciationbytakingfull advantageoftheexcellent facilitiesnowprovidedfor them.

HethankedMonsignor Kennedywho,forthepast 18 arrangedyearshadpersonally forMasstobe celebratedinthedistrict eachSunday.Thenew Chapel-of-Easewouldbe administered fromSt. Mary's,Leederville.

HisGracealsothanked FatherBrowne,theAdministrator,whohadtaken suchakeeninterestinthe building,andwhohad

arrangedeverythingso satisfactorilyforthesolemn ble'sing.

Hewasconfidentthat FatherBrowne,andhisassistant,wouldreceivethe utmostco-operation-spiri-tuallyandmaterially-fromthepeople.

In"TheStolenPrince," thestoryistoldbythe Chorus,aidedandabetted, andsometimeshindered,by ThePropertyManwho, duringthecourseofthe storyplacesonstagepro- pertiestosuggestariver,a barge,etc.

Thestoryissimple,and oft-usedinfables.Ababy princeisstolen,isfoundby poorbuthonestfisherfolk. Princeisrestoredtoplace ofhonourwhenhisidentity isdiscoveredbyancient nurse.

On itselfstagethestorytold charmingly,butthe productionlackedimagination.Oftheacting,most oftheplayershoppedponderouslyfromwordto word.RovBurtonwasgood asTheChorus,andusedan excellentaccent.AndColin Stittdidsomehumorous mimingastheproperty man.

"Menagerie" HitByFalse Mysticism

"TheGlassMenagerie," whichwastheIndependentPlayers'entryintheDrama Festival,wasanunsatisfyingslice-out-of-lifesortof play,spoiledattheendby anessayintomysticismwhichleftitallupinthe air.

Thelighting,too,wasunusual; treatedtheaudiencebeing to"GodSavethe Queen"intotaldarkness, andnolightbetweenscenes.

Theingredientsofthe playwereafatherlesshome, afondbutnaggingmother, andanovershycrippled daughter,eachindifferent waysrunningcountertothe sonandthe"gentleman caller."

Production,decorand continuityseemedgood.

MayRobinson,asthe new-poormother,didwell 'nherrole,butthedouble elocutionaryeffortofadopt'raganAmericanaccentand andaffectedtonedidnot assistclarity.

Itwouldbeunfairtothe authortoleaveyouwiththe impressionthatthisplay hasnomerit.Ithasmore goodsolidlaughlinesthan themajorityofone-act comedies.Butdespitethe laughlinesthefactremains thatthisplayconcerns hopelesscharactersina hopelessthemethatends onahopelessnote.This doesn'timpress;itdepresses.Andwhowantsto gotothetheatretobedepressed?

Productionoftheplay wasclumsy,anditdragged b:causetheplayerswere painfullyslowoncues.One shininglightwasSheila Buchanan'sperformanceas 'thecynical.wryhumoured.vinetipplingMa.Itwasa richcharacterisation,and thetimingofherlaughlines wasajoy.

PhillipJohnsonhaswrittenanumberofpopular three-actcomedies,andhis one-actplay"AprilDawn," presentedbytheDarling RangeRepertoryClub,has thestampofexperienceon it.Thecharactersaredrawn withbroadlines,thestoryis humorous,human,and neverbogsdownintooc'everdialogue.

But,apparently,lestthe propagandistvalueofthe playshouldpassoverthe headsoftheaudience(asit undoubtedlywouldhave done)aprogrammenote drewattentiontothe "somewhatsimilartoneof the'witch-hunts'ofamore recentdate."

Thereis,ofcourse,no similaritywhateverand onlythemostrabidmind couldfindanyparallelism betweeneventsin17thcenturySalemandtheconduct oftheplaywrightwhohid behindtheFifthAmendment.

Fortherestitmaybe saidthatwhile,nodoubt, afeweccentricsmayhave sufferedtheextremepenaltyinnocentlyoncharges ofwitchcraft,itisidleand unhistorictorepresentall oreventhemajorityof suchcasesastheresultof masshysteriaorpersonal vindictiveness.

Witchcraftinitsmostevil significanceoftrafficwith thedevilisaphenomenon attestedbytheScriptures, theexperiencesofthesaints andbytheritesofexorcism. Itexiststodaynotonlyin missioncountriesbutpossiblyinthecapitalcitiesof themostcivilisednations.

AstheRev.Parris,Colin Doherty wassuitably crampedandintolerant. KenBroughamwasperhaps ashadetoopolishedforthe historicalperiodinwhich hewassupposedtostand. Hisfailureinforcefulness wasalltooapparentwhen thewormturned.

MinorpartswereadeouatelyfilledandSydney Davis'settingsweremodels ofeffectachievedthrough simplicity.Thedirectionof AlanBurkewasnotedfor restraintinasubject-texturewhichwasrepletewith imbalance.

Thepartofthecrippled laughter,Laura,waswell actedbyEdnaHopkins. whokeptuptheillusionof 'heretiringgirl.happiest whenplayingwithherglassmenagerieandlisteningto thegramophone.
