ChurchWantsFrequentCommunion

NewsthateveningMassesandthemitigationoftheCommunionfasthavegreatly increasedthenumberofcommunicantsisnotsurprising.TheChurchmostcertainly believesinfrequentCommunion,andhasdefinitelegislationtoshowthis.

TheCouncilofTrent,heldinthe16thcentury, COUNCILOFTRENTURGEDCOMMUNION listedamongtheeffectsofCommunionthefollowing: "ItwasHiswillthatthisSacramentbereceivedas thesoul'sspiritualfood,tosustainandbuildupthose wholivewithHislife,asHesaid:'HewhoeatsMe healsoshalllivebecauseofMe'(Johnvi,58)."

"TheSacramentisalsotobearemedytofreeus fromourdailydefectsandtokeepusfrommortal sin.ItwasChrist'swill,moreover,thatthisSacramentbeapledgeofourfuturegloryandoureverlastinghappinessand,likewise,asymbolofthatone BodyofwhichHeisthehead(1Cor.xi,3);(Eph. v.3).(ThesetextsspeakoftheMysticalBodyof Christ).

Trent,therefore,madeaclearconnectionbetween HolyCommunionandtheMysticalBody.

ST.PAULTAUGHTABOUTMYSTICALBODY

ThetermMysticalBodygoesbackatleasttothe ninthcentury,buttheideaisclearintheNewTestament.St.Paulinparticulardevelopsit.HerepresentsChristasanimmenseorganism,aBody,ofwhich Heistheheadwithmenasthevariousmembers (EpistlestotheCorinthians,Colossians,Ephesians andRomans).AstheParente"DictionaryofDogmatic Theology"shows,St.Paultaughtinthisconnection thatChrist,theIncarnateWord,isthenewAdam, HeadofhumanitywhichisredeemedinHim,andHe constituteswithitaBody,whichistheMystical Christ.

ThisBodyisthePapalChurch,whichmanenters throughBaptism,tobeengraftedontoChristand thustoparticipateinthesupernaturallifewhich flowsfromtheHeadintothemembersbythesoul oftheMysticalBody.Theunityofthisorganismis sorealanddeepthatSt.Pauldoesnothesitateto say(Gal.iii,8):"YouarealloneinChrist,"thatis, asSt.Thomastranslates,youarewithChristonesole MysticalPerson.

"Here'mystical'isnotopposedtoreal,butstands forsupernaturalreality,althoughnotofthephysical type.'Christinus'isforSt.Paulthegreatmystery thatGodrevealsintheGospel:Throughitwelivein Christ,whocontinuesinusHisPassion,death,and resurrection("solidarity").Onthismystery,ason theirbase,resttheRedemptionandtheChurch."

The1943encyclicalofPiusXIIontheMystical Body("MysticiCorporis")isthemostlearneddocumentofourtimesonthisportionoftheology.It makesplainthattheMysticalBodyistheCatholic Church.

ThestatementoftheCouncilofTrentthatthe BlessedEucharistisasymbolofthatoneBodyof whichChrististheheadis,therefore,oftheutmost importancetoacommunicant,forthestatement appearsinadocumenturgingthereceptionofCommunionandplainlymeanstoteachthatthroughCommunionwecomecloserintothegracesimparted throughtheMysticalBody.Supernaturallifeflows fromtheheadintothemembersthroughtheaction oftheHolySpiritwhenwereceiveCommunion.

TheCouncilofTrent,showingthatthereisbutone CatholicChurch,assertedthattheChurchistheone MysticalBodywhoseheadisChrist,andChrist'shead isGod.

ThedivineprecepttoreceiveHolyCommunion,the moraltheologianSabettipointedout,bindsoftenin lifeandatthehourorintheimmediatedangerof death.ThereasonisthattheEucharistwasinstituted bywayofspiritualfood,bywhichthesoulisnourishedandstrengthened,andfoodmustoftenbetaken. ViaticumisthenamegiventoCommunionadministeredtothedying;itgetsthisnamefromthefact ofitsbeingapreparationforthejourneyintoeternity,(TheLatinword"viaticus"means"pertaining toajourney").

ThelawoftheChurchsaysthat,"indangerof death,nomatterfromwhatcausethedangerarises, thefaithfulareboundbythepreceptofreceiving HolyCommunion."Thiscanon864referstograve dangerofanykind-illness,injury,threatsofmurder, gravedisasters,etc.

Canon865says:"TheHolyViaticumforthesick shouldnotbedeferredtoolong,andthosewhohave careofsoulsshouldseetoitthatthesickpersons receiveitwhileyetfullyconscious."

ThepreceptofHolyCommunionisnotsatisfied byasacrilegiousCommunion(canon861).

Asforpersonsindanger:"Eveniftheyhave receivedHolyComMuniononthesamedaytheyare tobestronglyadvisedtoreceiveagaininthecourse 01thedayshouldtheycomeintodangerofdeath" (Canon864).

COMMUNIONGIVENTOYOUNG,DYING CHILDREN

Communioncannotbegiventinderconditions wherethereisseriousdangerofprofanation-suchas tothevomiting,totheinsane,delirious,etc.Butif thereareintervalsofsafety,lucidintervals,etc.,it canbegiven.Itcanalsobeadministeredtothe unconsciousifitisseenthattheycanswallowthe Host,anditnotonlycanbutmustbegiventocondemnedpersonsevenonthedayofdeathprovided theHostisreceivedanhourbeforeexecutionsothat thereisnodangerofirreverence.

RECIPIENTSMUSTBEINSTATEOFGRACE

Canon856saysthat"noonewhoisconsciousof mortalsinshallgotoHolyCommunionbefore makingasacramentalConfession,nomatterhow contritehefeelshimselftobe.Butifnecessity urgesthereceptionofHolyCommunion,andthereis noopportunitytogotoConfession,anactofperfect contritionshouldfirstbemade."

IfapersonisgoingtoCommunion,andrealises thathehasforgottenaserioussininConfession,he canstillreceive,forthesinhasbeenindirectlyforgiven,thoughhemusttellitinConfessionwhenhe goesagain.

CANONLAWURGESFREQUENTCOMMUNION

Canonlaw(No.863)urgesfrequentCommunion. Itsays:"Thefaithfulshouldbeadmonishedtoreceive theEucharisticbreadfrequentlyandevendaily, accordingtothedecreesoftheHolySee,andthose whoassistatMassshouldnotonlycommunicatein spiritbutbepreparedtoreceiveOurLordinthe actualreceptionoftheHolyEucharist."

TheSacredCongregationoftheCouncil,Dec.29, 1905,issuedafamousdecreeemphasisingthefrequent receptionofCommunion."AllCatholicsofwhatever rankorconditionshouldclearlyunderstand,"itsaid, "thatfrequentanddailyCommunionisdearlydesired byChristtheLordandbytheCatholicChurch.No onewhoisinthestateofgraceandapproachingthe sacredtablewitharightandpiousdispositioncanbe debarredfromit."

Thedecreedescribedarightdispositionasconsistinginthis,"thattheonewhoapproachesthesacred tabledoesnotdosofromcustomorvanityorhuman considerations,butbecausehewishestopleaseGod andtobemorecloselyunitedincharity,andto remedyhisinfirmitiesanddefectsbythisdivine medicine.

Perhapsthemostdifficulttaskforaproducercontendingintheannualdramafestivalischoosingasuitableplay.Forhemust bearinmindthat,withthenumberofplays enteredinthefestival,themarketofex-t periencedamateuractorsisgoingtobe prettywelldrained.

Andit'saluckyproducer whocanobtaintheservices ofacompletelystrongcast. Soforthebestresultsa producer'sfirstconsiderationisinchoosingaplay thatisstrongenoughto carrytheweaknessesofits players.

ThiswasperfectlyillustratedonThursdaynight whentheaudiencewas presentedinturnwitha playthatwasflimsyand neededgoodactingtocover itsdeficiencies;aplaythat wastheatricallysound enoughtobearacertain amountofweakness,and aplaythatwouldstillbe entertainingifitwaspalyed byactorswhohadnever beenwithinclappingdistanceofastage.

Whenthecurtainroseon theTherrySociety'spresentation,"Anti-Clockwise" AuntClarawasdeadon stage.Half-waythrough theplayshecamebackto life;thenattheendofthe playshediedagain.

Meanwhiletheplayhad died;killedbybadacting andworseproducing.Productionwasinert;the playersspentmuchoftheir timerootedtoonespot,and sledgehammeredtheirlines outofrecognisableshape.

Oftheplayers,Geraldine McPhee andLorraine Flanaganhadstrongvoices, andBethMurphydidshow somepromisebeneathalot ofinexperience.

"TheValiant"wasthe contributionoftheAcademy ofTheatreArts,anditwas atheatricallysoundchoice. Ithasdrama,emotion,and allthecharactersaresolidly knittogetherbyalarge questionmark;thequestion beingtheidentityofaprisonerabouttobeexecuted formurder.

Productioninthisplay was"stagey,"themoving oftheplayerswasstilted andunreal.Andthebeginningoftheplaydidnot captureanyofthetension thatwouldimmediately precedeanexecutionina prison.Theplaycameto lifemainlythroughthe effortsofRichardHearder andJudithGraham.Hearderdidn'tmaintainthe crustoffatalisticindifferencethatthepartofDyke calledfor;butwiththelack ofsupporthegotfromthe

Thethirdplay,Terence Rattigan's"Harliquinade," ispossiblythemostsoundly constructedofthisplaywriter'scomedies,probably becausetheplayisbasedon typesheknowsbesttheatricaltypes.

Inthisplayheturnsthe spotlightback-stageand revealsthestageandplayers

trippedoftheirmake-up.

Manytheatricaltypesarerepresented;theageing ouplestillplayingRomeo andJuliet;thepikecarrier overwhelmedbyhavinghis firstlinetosay,andthie oldstagerstalkingoffina emperament.

Inbetweenthestageis assaultedbyeverything fromastolidEnglishbobby toababyinapram.

Therefreshingthing aboutthisplaywastheenthusiasmwithwhichitwas played.Theactingwasn't ofahighstandard,butthe producerusedeveryinch ofstageandgotfromhis castanenthusiasmthat wouldhavebeenmoreeffectiveifithadbeentemper- edwithsmoothnessand bettertiming.

Intheleads,RogerSnaire drovetheplayalongwith tremendousgusto,andharvestedalotoflaughs,but he'dhavegotmorewitha morerelaxedperformance.

InthefemaleleadElsie Waresputalotofhumour intothepart,butdidn't backupherphysicalacting vocally.Hervoicewastoo thinanddidn'thavethe theatricalovertonesthepart demanded.

OftheOthers,theentire castistoolargetomention entirely,butRobertCotten gaveanappealingcharacterisationinthescenestealingroleofFirstHalberdier,andHesterBuchan showedgreatpotentialin herrelaxed,naturalacting.

Thedecorwasupto standardandthecostuming excellent.

ForaplaysetinParis. thescriptwaslackingin Frenchatmosphere,butwas filledwithsubtlewit,and theplotseemednotimprobable.

Asthespoiled,selfish daughterChristianneGalvoisier,RonaLandquist turnedinaverygoodperformance,whichwasmarkedbycleardiction.

Everyindicationintheinternationalcablessug- geststhatthereisgreatuneaseintheinnercabala oftheKremlinandthattheatmosphereofdoubt, suspicionanduncertaintyextendstothegripof RussiaonCommunismthroughouttheworld.The mostsignificantpointerinthisdirectionisthe mannerinwhichKhrushchev,oflate,hasbeen demolishingtheaffabilitymythwithconstant, repetitioussabre-fattlings,warningsandthreats.If theSovietisasmightyasitboastsitshouldnotbe necessarytowarnBritain,Turkey,America,orany- oneelseofthedireconsequenceshazardedby oppositiontoSovietintentions.Itisawidely acceptedprincipleinpedagogicsthatitisfatalto threaten thenfailtocarryoutthethreat.That iswhatmakesbrazendelinquentsoutofboyswho wouldnormallybemerelynaughty.

Likewiseinthesatellitecountries,theSoviet couldnotmakegoodtheclaimsofCommunismin termsofhumanity.Afterall,theRedtyrannyout- sideofRussiahadbeenimposedonnationswhich hadknownthefull-floodofChristiancultureand materialwell-being.Moscowwasjustnotableto supplyadequatesubstitution.Andthenitmadethe capitalerrorofinstitutingasystemofrepression whichcutacrosseverytraditionofChristianEurope. Onaccountofastrokehe couldspeakbutlittleto thosewhovisitedhimbut hewasspeakingconstantly toGod.Hourafterhour, dayandnight,hisrosary beadswererunningthrough hisfingers.
