ComparingtheY.C.W.to theyeastwhich,mixedinto aninertmassofdough,fermentsandtransformsit,the Popeurgeddelegatestofulfiltheirtwofoldtask:to keepandstrengthenthe lifeofFaithinthemselves andtogiveitsbenefitsto thosewhodonothaveit.

ThePontiffspoketoyoung peoplefrom87countrieson thethreebasicaspectsof theirmovement,namely thattheyareyoung,are workersandareCatholics.

Hesaidtheyoungare characterisedbystrength anddriveandbydreamsof thefuture.Buttheiroptimism,headded,isbesetby terribleobstaclesinthe presentworld.Menstruggle inhunger,destitutionand ignorance,henoted,and somecompromisetheirdignityandlosetheirideals.

Falseprophets,hewarned,insinuatetheirwayinto thesedepressedgroups sowingseedsofhateand rebellion.Others,on'the pretextthattheworld's naturalresourceswillnot sufficetofeedagrowing 6population,makeattempts onthedignityofmarriage andthefamily.

SayingthattheY.C.W. setsitselfagainsttheseobstacles,thePopecontinued:

"Itundertakestomould themindsandhearts(ofits members)inordertomake themintomenconsciousof theirresponsibilitiesand readytofacefearlesslythe hardesttasks.ThisisbecausetheY.C.W.,wherever ti ithasworkedforalong time,hasformedChristian leaderswho,assuch,area hopeforthesocialfuture andtheChristianregenera-

"Thoseeconomicand socialproblemswhicharise fromtheincreaseofworld population,fromtheinequalitiesofthedistribution ofnaturalresourcesand fromtheinsufficientdevelopmentofcertainregions causesomepeopletofeel misgivingsandpessimism.

TheY.C.W.,unlikeother youthgroups,cannotresort toviolence,deceitandother methodswhichfailtorespecttherightsofmen,the HolyFathertolddelegates. TheY.C.W.strengthis supernatural,hedeclared. ItcomesfromGodandenjoystheinspirationofthe HolyGhostateveryinstant.

"TheYoungChristian Workers'movementmeets theproblemofworkinglife atwhatisperhapsitsmost delicatepoint,thatis,atthe momentwhenitfirstpre- sentsitselftotheyoungman andtheyoungwoman,"the Popesaid.

"Leavingschooltogoto work,theyareusually proudtoplayintheirturn anactiveroleiusocietyandtheyarefullofself-confidence.Verysoon,however, crueldisillusionmentfastens uponthem.Toooftenthey runupagainstdifficultlivingconditions;theymeet onlywithmisunderstanding,harshnessandbad example.

HisGracetheArchbishoppraisedtheselflessindustryofthe Rev.J.P.O'Farrell,throughwhichhehadsetanexampletothe parishioners,whenheopenedthenewchurchatKenwickonSundaylast.

HisGracewasassistedat theceremonybytheparish priest(FatherO'Farrell), theRev.W.Cagney,O.M.I. andtheRev.T.Phelan.

Aftertheblessing,Solemn HighMasswascelebrated inthepresenceoftheArchbishop,FatherCagney preachedtheoccasional sermon.

AttheconclusionofMass HisGracecongratulatedthe parishpriestandpeopleof Kenwickontheacquisition ofsuchagracefulanddignifiedchurch.Inparticular hethankedFatherO'Farrell whoconceivedtheideaof buildingthechurch.

Throughhiscanselfless industryhehadsetan exampletotheparishioners -manyofwhomhadgiven theirservicesinavoluntary capacity.

Letbycontract,the Archbishopsaid,hehadestimatedthatitwouldcost atleast£5,500.Thatit hadcostonly£2,700wasa tributetotheparishpriest andallwhohadco-operated generouslywithhim.

Inthesedayswhenitwas sodifficulttogetfinancial accommodationforecclesiasticalbuildings,HisGrace said,itwasmostencourag-

ingtofindtradesmenwho werepreparedtogivetheir servicesonSaturdayswithoutremuneration,thus keepingthecostataminimum. Thechurchwouldbeall themoreprecioustothe peoplebecauseoftheactive parttheyhadtakeninits construction.
