ThefirstJesuitgeneral congregationwascalledin 1558toelectasuccessorto St.IgnatiusLoyola,the order'sfounder.Thepresentmeetingisthe30thin theorder's400-yearhistory. Itisthefifthextraordinary congregation.
Therarityofextraordinarycongregationshasgiven risetomuchspeculation, especiallyintheEuropean press,onsubjectsthemeetingistodiscuss.
Onerumourhasstated thattheorder'sstatutes,establishedbySt.Ignatius. aretobereformed.Anotherhasitthatthereare financialproblemsfacing theJesuits.

Alltheserumourshave beencalledunfoundedby competentpersonsinthe order.
Jesuitdevotiontothe heritageofthefounder,it wassaid,makesitunthinkablethatthestatuteswill bereformed.Moreover,it wasadded,whenHisHolinessPopePiusXIIaddressedthelastgeneralcongregationheremindeditofthe necessityforastrictapplicationoftheorder'sconstitution.
