Thisisanunusualnovel -unusualinitssetting,IndonesiaandDutchNew Guinea,andunusualalso initstheme.Thethemeis notaseasytodefine,becausetherearetwostories whichoverlapeachother, butthethemecommonto bothisthestruggleofa mantofindhissoul.

Intheworkingoutofthis problemJandeHartoghas mixedsuccess,probably becauseheisnottoosure himselfwhatthesignificanceofthequestis,but, atthesametime,hismain character'ssearchforpeace ofmindisnonethelessinterestingbecauseofthebewilderingthrashingabout thebushwhichattendsit.

Thesecondarystoryof theSalvationArmycaptain'sconversionfromdebaucherytosanctityismore logical,andpresentsaneat probleminmedicaltreatment.Thereisadmittedly, morethanafaintairof melodramaaboutit,butthe wholebookissomewhat other-worldly.Ilikeditdespiteallitsfailings.

Briefly,ifonecanbe briefaboutastorywhich changescourseeveryfifty pages,thehero,ayoung doctortrainedfortheDutch colonialservice,arrivesin Indonesiaandisimmediatelysentupcountrytohelp handleaplague.

Hemeetsthereaveteran doctoroftheservice,a titaniccharacterwithmore thantheusualassortment ofcolonialidiosyncracies, whotakesafancytohim, andthereafterkeepsa fatherlyeyeonhiminall

Thepassingofdeceased wasanoccasionofjoyfor thecommunityratherthan ofsorrow,sinceSisterMatthewisnowwearingthe crownofherlongandfruitfulyearsinGod'svineyard.

Bornsome85yearsago inthecityofLimerick, Eire,thedeceasedcameto AustraliaandenteredSt. Joseph'sConvent,Fremantlein1898.

Forthepast55yearsshe devotedherselftoeducation,spendingthefirstseven yearsofherreligiousprofessioninNortham,and wellover45yearsbetween Fremantleandthedistricts ofBeaconsfieldandNorth Fremantle.

Asateacherofthelower gradesshewonhighpraise fromalltheGovernment inspectorswithwhomshe cameincontact-herwork wasthoroughandmostefficient.

Sheendearedherselfto hercharges,andtodayis affectionatelyremembered bytheparentsandgrandparentsofthepresentgenerationwhoholdherin greatesteem.

Afterschoolhours,and wheneveraholidayfrom teachinggaveheranop- portunity,SisterMatthew visitedthehospital,tht prison,thesickandthepoor intheirhomes,andthe comfortandspiritualhelp whichresultedfromher visitsonlyGodknows.-

Shehadapoweranda magnetismoverpeoplethat fewotherspossess,andit washerunderstandingof humannature,andherdesiretorelievethepoorand sickthatenabledhertodo somuchgood.

SisterMatthewwasrelievedofteachingafew yearsago,andenjoyed fairlygoodhealthuntil sometwelvedaysbeforeher death,whenasevereheart attackwarnedherofher approachingend.Theselast dayswerespentinSt. Joseph'shospital,Bicton, whereeverycare,both physicalandspiritualwas lavisheduponher.

Herdeathwascalm, peaceful,prayerful-and almostherlastrequest wasprayerfortheyoung people,whoaretodayfac- inglifeinaworldsofull ofproblemsanddifficulties.

SisterMatthewwasinthe 60thyearofherreligious professionandherdeath willbemournedbymany whoknowherintimatelyandlovedherwell.
